When twenty-eight year-old Lexi Smart wakes up in a London hospital, she finds herself in a body of a totally different person. She has perfect teeth, her body is toned, and she carries Vuitton bag. Plus, she's already married to a gorgeous, multimillionaire man, no less, just like Cinderella but even better. Life seems too good to be true - just yesterday, she was "snaggletooth", got stood up by her boyfriend Loser Dave, and worked as an associate junior sales manager in flooring department - and suddenly, she's a "corporate big shot with a sleek new loft, a personal assistant, a carb-free diet, and a set of glamorous new friends."
It turns out that Lexi has lost three years of her memory due to an accident in her Mercedes. Now she has to find out what really happened to her in the last three years that led to her present life, before she loses her job and the people she loves. "Remember Me?" takes us through the process of discovering the "lost years" of Lexi's life.
Gradually, Lexi discovers that her life is not as fantastic as it's cracked up to be. Her husband, Eric is rigid and robot-like, though very loyal. In helping Lexi to recover her memory back, he prepared a marriage manual which covers stuff from tomatoes, tongues, foreplay, to goodbye embrace. In short, there is not one thing that is not included in the manual on how to handle it. There seems to be no room for spontaneity.
Just when Lexi thinks that her life is lacking excitement, an "adorably disheveled architect" reveals that they used to be lovers. At first, Lexi tries to deny it. But the more she resists, the more she finds herself attracted to the stranger who seems to be the only one who does not try to hide anything about her past from her. In him, she finds the old, imperfect Lexi again. As her life unfolds, Lexi finds out that her new life is full of "secrets, schemes, and intrigue."
While trying to gather back her memory, Lexi's work rivals is taking advantage of her memory loss to take over her position. Time is a luxury that Lexi does not have and she has to recover her memory fast before the whole flooring department is sacked. Together with Jon, her forgotten lover and her best friend, Fi, Lexi begins to cook up a plan to save the fate of her fellow colleagues. Will she succeed?
"Remember Me?" is a story of someone who is trying to discover her true self despite the changes in her life. Like other novels by Sophie Kinsella, "Remember Me?" is a light and funny read. Set in an elite social settings, readers can explore the lifestyles of the rich and famous and the scandals behind. However, it is more a book on the emotions and perspectives of an ordinary cinderella-like girl, rather than the confession of a celebrity.
