The story is told by an aging Sophie, one of the Weber sisters with whom Mozart was said to be intimately connected to. The four Weber sisters - Josefa, Aloysia, Constanze, and Sophie, were first introduced to Mozart in one of their father's weekly Thursday gatherings for musicians. Fridolin Weber was not a wealthy man but he was quite contented with his life and earned his living by copying music and giving music lessons.
The book depicts how the Weber sisters mature into womanhood and the development of their relationship with Mozart beginning from the time they met him. From the book, I gathered that Mozart was closer to the 3 younger sisters than he was to the eldest, Josefa. At first, Mozart was involved with the second daughter of Fridolin, Aloysia even though both mothers were not happy with their relationship. Frau Weber had high hopes for her second daughter to marry into a rich family with high position in society while Mozart's mother wanted her son to serve his parents for the time being and only get married when he turned thirty. Being a filial son, Mozart tried to make a name for himself with hopes that he can earn enough to provide for his parents and also marry his beloved fiancée. However he was brokenhearted when Aloysia ran away with a painter who was boarder at their house because she was tired of waiting for Mozart.
It took him years to get over her during which he buried himself in his works; not wanting to get romantically involved with any girls too soon. Little did he know that he would eventually find his true love among the Weber sisters all of whom he had tried to avoid out of shame after being dumped by Aloysia.
Marrying Mozart is a book that is based on true historical events though some of them were slightly rearranged to suit the flow of the writer's plot. It is a story of romance and triumph of how a poor musician finally became one of the most well-known composers in history.
