Jay is now here in Thailand for his first concert in Bangkok, and there'll be some authograph sessions and fan meetings on 24th Dec.

To get in the meet & greet with Jay, there's a radio contest called "Z close to Jay Chou" on 88.5 Z POP FM.

Candidates who pass the first round by playing game will be eligible to enter the interview to prove that they are real fans and 20 from more than 100 persons will be the winners.

On 18th Dec, I'm one of the candidates who passed first round. After finished playing game, the DJ coordinator asked "How old are you?", I replied "25"....... There's a long silence and he said "we'll contact you later for appointment details". I was so very happy as I'm confidence that I can compete with those kids in the interview as every single details of Jay is in my head! I also prepared some basic phases of Chinese conversation to increase my competitiveness.

I had been waiting for a couple days and never left my handphone for not to miss any call during this. In the evening of 21st Dec, I called them again to check. What the DJ said is "Our staff will contact you back". I waited for 2 more days and as the date is coming close, I called them again this morning. They said "we called everyone for interview in the morning of 22nd Dec, maybe that's because you're not at home so we couldn't reach you". "That's a big liar" I quietly speak in mind and said "there's no missed call on my handphone, I keep watching for the call from your station but I've got NONE". He said "I'm sorry but we already finished the interview yesterday and going to announce the winners' names by end of this day". I was like being dumped and dumb and admited to myself "I lose the chance to meet Jay closely, I should't put so much efforts on this supid radio station!!".

Back to the point of age, I'm wondering if I miss this chance because I'm too old??? Since target group of this radio station is teens (13-21 yrs), they then cut my name off without any notice to me??? :?

Any of you have any expeiences on AGE discrimination?

To the Mods: I'm not sure whether this topic is worth for discussion. If you think it's not, please log it.

Bleah, sorry to hear about that. If I were in your position I'd go stark-raving mad and start swearing at the DJ person, especially since I hate DJs and I hate the radio, but nevermind. I don't know if you didn't make it because of your age, but hmm, I'd guess that it really WAS the case since there's a targeted age group of audience, which is stupid because SINCE WHEN WAS JIELUN'S MUSIC RESTRICTED TO ONLY UNDER 21s? That is just crap! His music is for EVERYONE and it shouldn't matter that you're 25, you have every right to meet him if you want to!

sometimes people just suck, eh? Oh well, have fun at the concert anyhow. :)

Don't really have any experiences on age discrimination apart from the usual censorship thing, like I can't watch a certain movie because I'm under 21 years old, and once when I was 14, three years back, I wanted to see Placebo live in concert but couldn't 'cause I wasn't 16, things like that, nothing like the experience you described. Oh well.

Wow, that really sucks. I guess i feel discriminated (a lot of times here) because I am younger tahn everyone else. Therefore i must not be as wise, as experienced, and as smart as everyone else. But it's natural people have a picture in their mind of different age groups that makes them become biased about what they say and do.

But it sucks to miss out on your chance to meet Jay.

Aiesh...Tore that must've sucked so badly...That is extremely unfair! Over here in Canada, you're not allowed to win anything on the radio unless your 18 or over. So most kids get their parents to call in. It seems like it's the other way around for you though...stupid radio station...

I sometimes feel discriminated because I'm younger than most of my friends...and like Mike said, I'm not as smart or experienced in many different ways. Even though I look older than them...so it doesn't even out...

Lots of people that first meet me think I'm like 16. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing but I don't like it. And this guy really made me mad once. He said my friend was extremely short and looked 12 and then added "unlike that really tall girl behind you who looks nothing like 13." I know he was just kidding but things like that really really really piss me off.

Tore--> that's pretty bad. being about the same age as you, i can understand what you're going on about. perhaps the organisers wanted young, screaming, crazy fans and they thought that 25 year olds can't give them what they want...

back to the topic. yes i do feel discriminated against all the time. but my prob is that i don't look my age. ppl who don't know me think i'm a teenager even though i've been legally an adult for 6 years. i don't get proper service and attention from sales people and ppl think they can walk over me coz they think i'm young. it really annoys me a lot when it happens, but unless i go around dressed like a grandmother, it's not going to change.

Tore: That really sucks. Age discrimination is really stupid.. Just because you're older doesn't mean that you don't deserve to meet Jay!!

Yes, I've been discriminated against. It was pretty recent, actually, less than a month ago. A group of my friends and I (all 13) went to the mall to watch a movie. Some of us had student IDs (they give you a discount on the movie tickets) and some didn't. We said this to the guy at the counter, and then he said, "I need your IN-DI-VI-DU-AL IDs." He made sure to enunciate on individual, like it any word over 2 syllables was too much for our minds to handle. Stupid jerk. And then we showed him our IDs, and we were muttering to each other that we were all from the same school anyway. Then he looked at the people in line behind us and said, "See? This just shows that they're students, because they don't understand anything." EXCUSE ME!? We understood perfectly fine, we showed him our IDs, didn't we? We weren't even talking to him anyway. He acted like we understood absolutely nothing that was coming out of his mouth just because we were young.

He really pissed me off, and I can't even explain how mad I was. I felt like grabbing the little pole in the floor and shoving it up into where the sun don't shine. Okay, I'm getting kinda violent. Anyway, he looked like he hadn't been to school in quite a while. What grown adult works at a theater full-time? Just wondering, because most of the people who sit behind that glass wall seem to be teens working part-time because they want to raise their own money.

Age discrimination is so stupid; just because you're not over 18 doesn't mean that you're stupid. There are a bunch of people that are older than 13 who act like they're 7. Stupid stupid stupid.

[edit] Woohoo. My dad just asked me what he should write on the inside of a Christmas card, then thought for a second. Then he said, "Never mind; what would a kid know?" I kinda felt like punching him.

All: thanks for sharing your stories.

Well, if I know that AGE might become an issue, I would definitely tell them that I'm 15! (just to get the chance for the interview at first). Then, if they later caught that I'm 25 (maybe they ask for my ID card), I would simply say that "you people might have two bad ears, I told the DJ that I'm 25! Go back and check your listening capability at hospital". :harhar:

 Ouch, that's tough. I've never experienced anything to that extreme I suppose, unless you count the times when i went to valleyfair and they wouldn't let me go on the kiddy rides : ) (damn punks, I'm scared of heights alright!)

*sigh* aiya, I think if I was in your position, I'd commit high treason or murder by then, or else just slowly drive myelf crazy with thoughts on that one freaking phone call! But seriously, sometimes when I enter a fancy place, people look at me weird cause even though I don't really look my age, I still look like a teenager so that's a real *sarcasm here* bonus for me huh! (I finally got to watch rated r movies legally this year though!!!!!! :brows: )

Or it gets even worse when a bunch of teengars enter a store or just any place in general. People get two thoughts : More $ or if they steal -$....... so age disrimination doesn't just apply for older people (don't get me started on the seniors, just cause they are older and have lived longer than I have and their time on earth is "limited", that don't mean that they have the right to cut me on the road, drive slow on the road *yes, i have road rage* nor budge me in line, nor yell at me cause their hearing aid fell off then demand to see the manager over customer service.... *sigh* the world today  )

But it would make the world beautiful if age discrimination didn't exist  , but that would be when Bush actually have a thing called an IQ right :shifty: ? I'll just think of it as letting us here at JC.net have great topics like this ^^...... but hey, feel better cause u ain't alone!

i'm so sorry to heard that...actually age discrimination happen all the time at any place... tats why there are generation gap.. haha... the olds tend to thk that they have more experience than the young, and the young thks that the old are not as energatic and "in" as them...

Ugh, I HATE age discrimination. Tore: Poor you! You could have met Jay! I would be sooo pissed if I were you.
I got an application filled out to work at McD's when I was 14 and I read on the site that I can apply (under 15) as long as I get my parent to write a note. So I went to McD's and stood patiently in line and after like fifteen mins of lineup, I got to the front and I told them that I wanted to hand in my app. Then the person told me to stand aside and wait for a moment because they want to finish dealing with the customers first. So I wait on the side and I see the manager! The girl told the manager that I was waiting and then the manager COMPLETELY ignored me and just stood there zoneing out. So I went to an empty counter and tried to get her attention and she just pretended that I was not there. So after an hour of waiting, I gave up and went home.
A few weeks later, that McD got burnt down by some accident. HAHA.

sad to hear that happen in thailand. i also live in thailand. i know i get it alot here too. age discrimination is real annoying and cruel sometimes. it kinda separates u and shines a bright ugly green light on ur face. its sad but true.

yeh u shouldve lied to get to meet jay, i would but who would know theyd be like that rite? u never know. if that happend to me, id crash the jay interview or meet and greet or whatever. its so unfair, why would only teens get the chance? i hate prejudice, all kinds, sex age race.

tore your so unlucky! rude people... that's really bad, i'd be gutted!!

here, if you go into a shop in uniform or not, the shop assistants eye you and sometimes just follow you, coz when i went to zara in london with my friends, the security was giving me bad looks, and the assistant came and checked up on me that i wasn't stuffing some jeans under my coat!!

yeah yeah... i know how you feel...i get that all the time...but everybody thinks i'm younger...and looks 12...yes twelve!! and i'm already legally adult in my country!
i dont mind ... really... when it's minor things or anything like that!
but sometimes.... people can actually laugh at me and say 'yeah, right...if u r 18 then i'm in elementary'!!! Gosh....and I'm saying the truth!
Anyway...Tore...yr case was worst than worst....u missed Jay!!!

Eh.. I hate how people make age such a big deal. It's not like someone who has a young age can't be more mature than someone who is older. I see this a lot. People just like to stereotype, probably because many live up to that stereotype that young = immature. However, there are exceptions.

Like I'm 16 and my bf is 19 (turning 20 in July) so a lot of his friends are like, wth are you doing? It bothers me to hear it and I don't think he should have to defend himself or anything, they just need to buck up and know that age is just a number, it's not a definition.

sooo dislike age discrimatin; espeically when ur younger and the adults talk to you like a baby or as if ur dumb so that they gotta speak slowly and so phony
but then just today my government teacher point out that if he was drivin out a car, flickin off a police guy, he wouldnt get get much trouble as three 17-18 yrs old in a car passin by since i guess the police guy would be more suspicious of whats in their car than my teacher's. lol :shifty:

hrm age discrimination..
i have experienced that before. dont you just hate it when you go to a restaurant or something and you try to either order food or talk to the person/waiter/waitress. and they just IGNORE YOU!?!?!?!

the worst thing that ever happened was when i was in a restaurant. it was a private "club" as they have in singapore and they are supposed to be "high class" and stuff right. so i walked in.. because my parents were parking the car and they asked me to take my grandma down first because they were scared there would not be enough tables available and also because my grandma wouldnt be able to walk so far from the carpark to the restaurant.. so yeah. we walked in... and we just stood there.

usually, when i was with my parents or older siblings or people, almost immediately a waiter or even the manager would escort us to a table.. well yeah. we just stood there. and at first i thought that they might be busy right.. so i just waited. but then, what really made me ticked off was when some other people walked in and the waitresses immediately escorted them to their seat!!! i mean , what the hell!. we were there way before them!!. this is when i started to get annoyed.. so i took my grandma and just walked up to a table and sat down..
so yes.. that part was settled.. but then!

as we sat there.. NO ONE gave us menus or anything to drink.. again, immediate service was what my family had always got there when i was with my parents. so i had to go up to one guy and ask for one.. and you know what?? he totally ignored me.. infact, it was like i had never talked to him. he went off to serve another table. i was so angry! it seemed as if NO ONE would actually listen to what this person wanted to order!!.. grrrrr

then my parents came in...
immediately, a waiter went across the room to them and asked .. " how many people??"..
my parents said that i was with them and walked to my table. again, immediately, a waitress came up and gave us menus and asked if we wanted any drinks.. i mean.. WHAT THE HECK.

i mean, i maybe can understand that they might not want to serve a "little girl" but what about my grandma!! she was just sitting there! [ she doesnt know how to speak english. thats why she didnt say anything]. GR. anyway...

some people are just .. hmph.

well..

@ u154801

hmm if they say that to you.. just reply back and say.. well i dont see any problem with buying a little toy for my 8 year old brother.. unless maccas's toys are designed for babies behind the counter or else i think i can buy anything as long as i pay for it..

hmm... but yeh..its funny thou hahahah

@ zhoudaoyan

now thats not very nice isnt it .. hmm if ever! if ever any restaurant or club or whatever treat me like the way they did to you.. i will.. go up to the manager and blast @ them..then walk off.. and the sometimes u probably ended up with free drinks or food or smehting haha... depends.. and once i went to this restaurant.. well now its not age discriminaton.. whole family went in right..well they were rather buzy but bloddy hell.. we waited for 15 mins...and no one came to serve us... i yelled for them...still no one..so i told my parents...screw this..and we walked off haha.. that was fun.. yet lame as they r sooo slow..o well...

Yeah, there was once where i was being discriminated at because i was too young to work. I went for the job interview and the person just completely ignore me as if i am invisible, argh! I was so mad that i slam the door and went straight out towards the door. I mean, how can u judge the performance of a person by his or her age right! So frustrating...

12-05-2005, 10:00 AM
OHHH YESS! when i applied for a job, i got denied because of my age. Like i am pretty much the youngest in my class, but about 5 of us applied for 10 positions. i was unfortunately a year younger than the rest, i was 15. and i was smarter and more prepared and had more recomendations than the others. but noooo, they had to choose all my friends but left out me. just great. just as POTO said, "So frustrating..."

Tore, don't be upset about that event. Its like that. It happens all the time.

When I go in to watch a NC-16 movie, they keep asking for my ID. Its no use having the $$, they won't sell tickets to you if they suspect that you are underage.

03-13-2006, 05:37 AM
haha..I have been ignored by people in restaurants even with parents. But I give them a really sour face and sometimes scold them right under my breathe just loud enough for them to hear..then some start acting nice. others don't so i continue looking at them like I wanna kill them.. lol. For ur info..I'm short..and could easily be regarded as 11 or 12. but i still expect people to respect me..even if I have to give them a really scary face or scold them. This is how some people lose business..they ignore the younger generation and only concentrate on the older ones. What they don't think of is that most of the times..it's the kids that will influence the parents to purchase stuff
