Okay, sorry if I make a mistake, but I've been away for quite a while so I'm not really sure which fruit is Malaysian and which isn't, unless they're really obvious. :shy:
I love: Watermelon and coconut (juicy, juicy)
I hate: Durian (because it stinks!)
Can't remember what else now! Will add more later if I remember... :bleh:

I'm just wondering... what are we going to do with this thread once we're done listing our favourites? :)
Anyway, I love durian, Vunsin. But I hate the heaty feeling afterwards, and the odour when you visit the loo.
I love mangos! And our own jambu (the pink ones) and amra. Does anyone know who started the trend of eating fruits with sour plum powder? Is it the Malaysians?

Miss-gun: Thanks for reminding me! :flowers: I just remember I also love rambutan. I don't mind banana and papaya but I generally stay away from them because, um, they give me instant stomachache all the time.
ashley: Hehe... I think we should start "debating" and "defending" about our likes and dislikes then, if we don't want this thread to die, right? :wink2:
ashley

I wonder why some of our stomachs cannot endure papaya. It doesn't give me instant urge to run to the restroom but it does make a statement the next day.
I like langsat too ,duku-langsat especially. In fact, I love all types of local fruits EXCEPT the starfruit.

Oh... I just remember... pineapple is even worse than papaya or banana... With papaya and banana I'd just do the normal #2 business, but with pineapple, it'd have some sort of food poisoning effect on me which includes throwing up and gastric pain!

Vunsin, you have a very sensitive stomach!!
I had no problem...eating it..
ashley

Vunsin, when I eat pineapple, I kinda palpitate and sweat breaks out on my nose and that part between the upper lip and the nose.
You must've stopped eating pineapple if you react so violently.
Jenen - you started the topic but you didn't tell us what kinds of fruits you like!

Miss_gun: Yes, I'm always having stomach problems even though people who've eaten the exact same things I have never experience any problem at all.
Oranges used to give me heartburn too, but now I don't have that problem anymore... luckily... Durian I think will just about kill me...

Thanks for bringing that up, ashley. Jenen, *cough* *cough* please make my new job easier. *cough* *cough* Thanks.

here I am again, invading the Malaysian threads :D
I'm really seeing that we have almost the same culture + fruits! :excited:
I love durian too, especially the candy pastilles (do you have them in Malaysia?) But I don't necessarily like the smell of it, reminds me of gas.
Hmm, I've never experience palpitations or the likes while eating these fruits. But eating too much pineapple (I did this once after watching ChungKing express, Takeshi ate so much pineapple that I felt I had to do so too.) can give your mouth this stingy feeling. It's very uncomfortable, I had to do all remedies possible but failed.
Oh, and I love mangoes too. :D How many kinds of mangoes do you have in Malaysia?
ashley
12-23-2003, 08:36 AM
Kahel, I don't know how many varieties of mangoes we have, but my favourite is called Chokanan. It's sweet and juicy.
I also love pickled mango or papaya.
*salivates*
Has anyone eaten fresh asam jawa? It's not really frsh but I'm talking about the fruit that is still in the pod and it's sweet. Tastes a little like dried longan, not sour like the usual asam jawa that we use in cooking. I bought them in Kota bahru... but I think it's from Thailand.

My favourite tropical fruits.
1.Rambutan ( lazy to eat unless my mom has peeled the skin and put it all into a box.hehe. then i can eat nonstop
2. Star Fruit - i just love the sour taste. only eat the greenish ones
3. Mango ( the not too ripe not too young ones.. yum! and i also like green mangoes that u dip in black/shrimp paste + sugar + cili padi ) .. ooh, but will get stomach ache after a few hrs.. ^^
i also like dried mangoes that my friend bought for me from the Phillipines.. ^^
4. Water Melon - just so yummy , the sweet ones
5. Papaya - I used to LOVE papaya so much that it made my skin turn yellowish..! my feet, hands and inside of my eyes turned yellow.. like i had jaundice or something.. so the doc asked me to stop eating.hehe.
I only eat durian when my mom buys them back. i'd eat one or two. i don't mind the smell that much.^^

Hi Hi, food related subjects always interest me. So here's my first post in malay thread.
vunsin, you really have sensitive stomach !. Some ppl eat certain fruits like papaya, banana to ease the bowel movement.
Pineapple is always considered as "sharp" fruit, I always eat it last from the fruit bowl plate coz it sorta "blunt" the tongue and made other fruits tasteless.
I love durian, though ppl keep on saying that Thai's Montong is the best, it's too dry, meaty and too big to eat (you'll skip lunch and dinner altogether). I prefer the local variant ie from Medan, it's creamy and smaller, really like the bittersweet version. For processed durian, I only like in ice cream, dodol (that sticky yellow/brown cake), kolak (sweet desert along with sticky rice).
We're all lucky for living in the tropicals, we've got so many fruits and some fruits like banana and mango has sooo many subvariants.
My fruit favorites are mostly "semi - endangered species" :
Manggis or Mangosteen > I prefer the smaller one, the big one usually has this bitter yellow wax ?
Salak Bali or Snakefruit coz the skin looks like snakeskin. I prefer the one from Bali, it's bigger and pointy shape, more juicy, sour and fresh.
Jambu bol > it's pink and white stripe jambu, it has rosy smell and the meat is chewy/softer than usual jambu (more crunchy)
Pisang Raja > that fat, short, golden colour banana. It's sweet and really filling. You only eat this variant fresh, not the "processed" variant = cooked as kolak, fried or baked.
Mangga gedong gincu > the smaller, rounder, orangish mango. the meat is dark orange like gincu (lipstick), more sour and fragrant than the green skin mango.
And of course young coconut on any given hot days !
Do you know that avocado is considered as fruit in Indonesia ? We mix it in fruit ice (sort of ice kachang) and even juice it (with mocha syrup + sweet condensed milk).
One question : Do Malaysia has rujak ?. In Indonesia there are many variants of rujak, the simplest one is cut fruits + melted palm sugar mix. The most popular rujak is rujak ulek : the spice is mix of kacang + palm sugar + asam + salt + some others. No girls would resist rujak :-))
Miss_gun
12-23-2003, 01:54 PM
beach_gurl: rujak? I have not heard of it b4! But Malaysia do have Rojak. It's like the mixed of food + a special sauce....sometimes it does have some kacang too..
Salak BAli!! I know!! Here we call Buah Salak! It's quite nice!! I like it..but most of the time..it tasted really sour!!
Hardly eat one that is sweet...
beach gurl
12-23-2003, 02:07 PM
Miss_gun, I think rujak is similar to rojak, slightly different spice maybe. The "must have" fruit in our rujak is jambu, pineapple, bengkoang (sort of white crunchy yam ?), green young mango.
Salak, you should try salak pondoh then - that's what mostly available in supermarket. It's smaller, round, not sour. But I find it "character-less" compare to salak bali.
Hey there's another "bali" named fruit, but you don't really see it in bali, hehe, it's jeruk bali (bali oranges ?). It's a giant green oranges - up to the size of a coconut !.

okok, my eyes are really blurr~ fter reading about... 3000+ posts! so... here goes, AGAIN
i like

lots lor~ lets see... langsat( cause it just taste that horrible, i don't know why) coconut(same, the smell and taste just get me away),mangoesten(does it spell that?, and i don't even like the look of it, no need to say the tste of it, and the smell? ewww~~~~~) i don't recall any, cause my mind is spining
so-so, em... "ok lar" type fruit
watermelons, banana, is there any other fruits? i think so, but i'm lzy to think. hihi...
Miss_gun
12-23-2003, 02:45 PM
beach_gurl: YEAH!! Exactly!! Sengkuang I guess! Must have pineapple, jambu..mango..hehehee..
actually in Malaysia, they don't really sell Salak in supermarket...It's quite rare..if they do so. Most prob you have to get it in special fruits stall..
Well..I have not seen those big oranges b4..do you have a pic of it?
NO!! Donny!! How can you not like Langsat??!! It's so nice!! And Mangosteen too!! :?

another new topic!!! :excited: you are most welcome to invade the Malaysian thread kahel and beach_gurl! fave tropical fruit? well i love mangoes!!! watermelons too!!! is dragonfruit consider a tropical fruit? one thing for sure i hate durians!!! high 5 vunsin i used to eat durians when i was younger but then i just stopped and suddenly i just dun like the fruit and esp the smell anymore. oh oh... rojak is just great!!! though it must the fruit one, they have another type of rojak here in KL which is actually the indian rojak which up north we call it pasembor - yeah i know weird name but hey i aint the one who gave it the name :bleh:
cmy_185
12-23-2003, 05:49 PM
i love rojak too, the fruit kind..^^ but i will only eat the mangoes and the sengkuang and pineapple, and leave all the cucumber aside.. the only place i know of was at Tanjung and this guy will be selling rojak and VCD!
ashley
12-24-2003, 02:51 AM
Hmm... maybe beachgurl is right. Girls cannot resist rojak!! I love it too, with lots of crunchy unripe fruit like mango, amra and papaya. I think I would like the Indonesian version of sauce better because palm sugar tastes really good.
I don't like the crackers in my rojak. And if possible, I don't want them to add the nuts either. And Mei Yee, I also have stomach problems after eating rojak. :? Sometimes I blame the sauce but I get the problem even if I make the sauce at home myself. Must be some kind of reaction between the sauce and the fruits, and our weak digestion system cannot handle it.
I used to love mangosteen but have always been disapponted with more rotten than good fruits. I stopped eating mangosteen years ago because of this. Do you guys eat the fruit if it looks transparent? Is that bad or good?
beach gurl
12-24-2003, 04:19 AM
Miss_gun, unfortunately I don't have the pic of jeruk bali. Chinese ppl use to put it in praying table also - cos it's so big ???
Ashley, I do eat the transparent mangosteen,it's not rotten, but sorta "rusak". The rotten one is brownish and mushy. Be careful when you open the mangosteen, the skin could stain clothes permanently.
Talking about "rusak" fruit, a certain kind of "rusak" coconut - we call it kelapa kopyor - is actually very much sought after, it cost more than regular coconut, maybe because it's so rare . The coconut meat is mushy and has more fatty taste.
Do you know "asinan" Bogor, it's also preserve fruits (the rujak fruits) in sour kind of water . The name is misleading coz it's not salty at all, the "water" is actually sour and fresh taste. But you could only keep it for max 1 week or the fruits will become too mushy.
ashley
12-24-2003, 06:27 AM
I think bali is pomelo? But jeruk means preserved, right beachgurl?
And when you talked about "asinan" and kelapa kopyor, we got lost. However, we do have a lot of preserved fruits in sourish water, like mangoes and papayas... which are absolutely yummy.
So about the mangosteen, even if it had yellow speckles, it's alright? :?
beach gurl
12-24-2003, 07:01 AM
Ashley, jeruk bali is pomelo. Jeruk is orange, bali is bali (the island), no other meanings.
I think asinan is similar to Malays's sourish water -preserved fruits.
Mangosteen with yellow speckle (wax ?) - eat at own risk - it's bitter.
Langsat is a "sister' of duku here. It's quite rare. Hehe, anyone experience biting too deep and taste the bitter stone, yikes, worst than medicine.
Oh, another processed fruit story from Indonesia. Ripe or over-ripe jackfruit is fried with flour+egg mix here - and becomes sorta tea time companions.
The inner skin of the jackfruit (the whitish "cushion") - dunno how to call it - is cooked as vegetables. Some good cook could "fake" it as meat rendang.
Anyone has taste jackfruit "sister" called cempedak ?. It's much smaller, ie 30 cm length max, but the taste is sweeter and has more pungent smell.
ashley
12-24-2003, 07:34 AM
Over here, we fry cempedak flesh with the batter of flour+egg+water to be eaten for tea. It has a wonderful scent. The seeds can be consumed too, by boiling them until the skins cracks. It's delicious.
We usually eat jackfruit (nangka) fresh. I'm not sure if the cushions are used in cooking but I think I've heard of it.
About langsat and duku, they have new hybrids now and the green bitter seeds no longer exist!
beach gurl
12-24-2003, 08:06 AM
I wonder the reaction of "westerner" upon reading that we eat almost all part of jackfruit - except for the outer skin. Hehehe, chinese is like that, eat everything flying except the planes, eat anything with four legs except the table.
Seedless duku ! That's something I'd look forward to taste !
And has any of you - durian lovers - experience mabuk durian, durian hangover ? I did once as a kid, eating too much, my eyes feels glued, feels heaty and dizzy. Old ppl believe that if you drink water poured on the durian skin (chamber) you could avoid this durian hangover.
ashley
12-24-2003, 08:21 AM
And the other tip for durian lovers, if you dip your fingers and wash them in the water collected in the 'chambers' (the hollow insides), of the durian skin , they won't stink of durian afterwards.
Strange huh?... but proven to be true.
Well, I've got to tip my hat to jenen for starting this topic and then disappearing. I had my doubts but look... we're at page 3 !!!
*thanks to beachgurl and kahel for participating*

Hey, I remember one "durian story" that happened when I was younger. Since most people here are Malaysians, I assume, you'll know the things that I'll mention. Okay, for some reason, my parents liked to keep the durians that they bought in the bathroom. :shifty: So one time, when my brother was around 3 years old and my mom was getting ready to give him a bath or something, he accidentally sat on one of the durians with all his clothes off! He'd mistaken the durian for a stool (you know, the kind you sit on when you bath using a bucket of water). He cried so loudly but luckily he didn't really bleed or anything... But still... the poor kid...

What's amra, do you eat it raw or ripe ?
I forgot to mention one of my fave fruit : sawo. It's oval, brown, the size of duck egg. Look like hairless Kiwi. The insides are soft smooth brown and has several black seeds. I eat it with spoon but most people peel it with knives and cut it into smaller pieces.
What other spices - other than salt - that you put to spice up pale tasted fruits like jambu or crunchy mango ? The "unique" home recipe is sugar + soya sauce - weird eh, it taste ok though.
Miss_gun
12-25-2003, 06:32 PM
I have not eaten Sawo b4..:?
Erm...beach_gurl, I think they do put some prawn paste in it..I am not sure though....
Sugar and soya sauce? Reminds me of Coneh... A kind of sauce you dip when you eat jambu and so..

lang sat? I still can't get what is lang sat...
(okay, I am no malaysian... don't mind me invading your thread right?)
is there an english name for it or something? :?
actually I am basically a fruit lover... I love all the fruits mentioned durian, mangosteen, cempedak, jambu, pinapple etc etc. can't really think of a fruit I don't like... at least not tropical fruit lah...
haven't eaten durian in a while though... should pester my dad to go get it... these days in singapore... they go and pack the durians into those styrofoam boxes, so you don't even get to see the skin/shell... I miss those days I can drink from the 'chamber'... I always ask my dad to tell that person to 'save' a piece of the shell for me... so its like one shell with the rest of styrofoam boxes...sad right?
btw, is there a remedy for mangosteen stains... tey even stain my fingers (until the skin come off) sometimes... that's why I have this love hate relationship with that fruit...

Not much of a fruit person, heh, my mum has to practically force me to eat my share of fruits daily...or at least weekly ..heh.
What;s the difference btw a yellow and a red rambutan? I've never actually tried a yellow one! The red ones are not so bad! but i hate all the big fiery red ants that usually come with them, freshly pluck from the tree! Heh..anyone eaten pulasam b4? they taste just like rambutan!
I like durian, but I cant stomach much...just two or three, and u'll have me burping like mad...U know the smell they leave on ur hands after eating them?well, my dad says they go off if u wash ur hands with water filled into the durian shell. Something like that anyways...and my sis used to like drinking slightly salted water from the shell...Heh...I've never tried, though...
Ok, going off the topic here..

lattae

I don't think there is a need for seedless watermelons... as cmy said... you can really just swallow the seeds... and much unlike say orange or grape (where the seeds are very bitter it chewed accidentally), watermelon seeds are nice and smooth and tastless... super easy to swallow esp given the watermelon's juicy nature...
so everyone... swallow the seeds! not to worry, no watermelon plant will grow out of you... I've done it all my life and no signs of a watermelon tree popping outta me yet...

lattae: talking abt watermelon plants growing on your head. my friend just told me when she was like small, her grandparents told her that if she swallows the seed of any fruits, the tree will sprout out of her head. so funny and she was like - hey i believe okay. there was one time she swallowed the seed and for that whole week she was checking in the mirror for that supposedly to be growing out of her head tree... i tot it was quite a funny tale.
mei yee: yeah i am too lazy so i usually swallow the seeds... okay bad habit though.

Do you guys peel the skins of the grapes before you eat them? I guess YS doesn't , since you said you're "lazy" to even get rid of the seeds within. I like grapes but I hate the skin.
Seedless mangoes :glug: ? That's new.
But Jenen, seedless red watermelons are really common these days.
I also want to mention the lai chi... the rough green skinned one with white , sweet flesh and large black seeds. What is that called? Nona lai chi or something. That's a nice local fruit.

Seedless mangoes ? That's new, but is it necessary ? - the seed/stone is a big one anyway, it never bothers me.
I eat grapes with the skin, but wash it thoroughly. Really like green sourish grapes - unfortunately still with seeds :-(. Really good to eat it with certain kind of cheese.
Ashley, I only know Lychee the canned, syrupy version from China. Had only try the fresh reddish skin once - hehe prefers the can version.
Talking about sourish fruits, usually ppl mix it with "sambal" here and eats with rice and others.
Does anybody know "gandaria", it's small (big marble size), very green and has one pinkish seed inside. I only eat the "pickled" one, as asinan or as sambal companion.
The other sour fruit, within family of "tamarind" or asam is "keranji / kranji". It has black skin and orange velvelty meat with one black seed. Ppl dried it under the sun and then crack the skin. It's so sour, I prefer to eat the "processed" one, dipped into melted sugar.

Arghhhh!... beachgurl, I wish we had this discussion before my parents went to Jakarta. i'd have asked them to bring back those delicious asinan and fruit dips that you've mentioned.
In Kota Bahru, their rojak buah is really nice. They use tamarind juice and sugar and add in fresh fruits as well as preserved fruits like nutmegs and preserved mangoes (the small ones - "tang jai"). The sauce is brownish and not dark like the Penang rojak sauce. And they don't add in prawn paste , ground nuts and sesame seed.... I prefer the Kota Bahru rojak. They call it "Colek".

Seedless mangoes....I guess were made for us to have more meat in it I guess....
hehe...New Zealand....must be behind...We haven't had seedless watermelons in the market....boy....it would be handy!*^^*

Waa Ashley, I'd love to try that "colek". It's available in KL or JB ?.
Talking about rambutan, there's 2 - 3 variants here. The red, hairy one and the smaller green, short hair one (called "rapiah". The green is sweeter and the price is more expensive. Believe it or not, some seller do shave the young red hairy ones (still greenish) to obtain "rapiah" look and they could gain some profit of doing so. X__X, some ppl do have a lot of free time tsk, tsk, tsk !.
ashley
12-29-2003, 07:45 AM
HAHAHA!!!!!... they shave the rambut of the rambutan to mark up the price? That's such a tedious job !
Beachgurl> Colek is only available in Kota bahru.. near the border of Thailand . But I 'm not sure if they sell this in the pasar tani or pasar malam elsewhere.
Oh by the way, we have hairless rambutan and it's called pulasan. I think it's known as the wild rambutan ( i.e from the jungle maybe?) I don't know which one tastes better cos i haven't tasted pulasan for a lo-oooong time.
lil~jo
12-30-2003, 04:07 AM
There is such a thing? wow.....
hairless rumbutan...hehe....that would be nice....
That would mean, its easier to get rid of the ants that crawl on them.....
*^^*....
can you post a picture of that pulasan?
Is anyone here for G.E fruits? do you Malaysians think it is right?
(just wondering)
J squared

Yeah jenen, (jo) there are hairless rumbutans...
I don't believe G.E is very good, but now not many countries are against it anymore, they import G.E goods from all over the world.
ashley
01-02-2004, 08:57 AM
Oh btw Jenen... here is the link that leads to a picture of the pulasan.
http://personales.mundivia.es/schrader_gomera/pulasan.jpg
You will see that it's not exactly hairless and it's quite difficult to tell the difference between the normal rambutan and pulasan from this picture.
But rambutan has fine hair while pulasan has liks soft spikes.
And I'm going to ask a dumb question - What is G.E? :?
lil~jo
01-02-2004, 09:12 AM
Genetic Engineering=G.E
It is when they insert some other species genes into another species to make it either grow, taste or look better!
Things come out different colours, like those green and red peppers (veges) well now they come in yellow, white, pink....really weird...
Or, Sometime this year, this uni student came to my school to tell us about G.E and was trying to convince us that it was good.
She showed us a picture of a glow in a dark rabbit!
I mean, thats really sad, they injected JellyFish genes into it....Thats real CRUELTY to animals!
The scientists say that it is a way to solve all the poor hungry people because things will grow faster, and on top of that people will get money faster because they would be able to sell their crops earlier. They also say they found antidotes when they mix genes together.
Thanks! for the picture by the way.
mmmm.....drooling...so tasty!
Do they sell that through out Malaysia? (cause I'm looking forward in eating it when I go back to Kuching.
ashley
01-02-2004, 09:16 AM
Oh thanks, Jenen :), for explaining G.E.
Hmm, pulasan is a rare sight but you could get lucky. I'm not even sure if it's seasonal.
They use tamarind juice and sugar and add in fresh fruits as well as preserved fruits like nutmegs and preserved mangoes (the small ones - "tang jai")
I just remembered what "tang-jai" is called. Mempelam. And it's like a baby mango , small and greenish. We usually eat them when they're not ripe and real sour. It's best served with rojak sauce.
beach gurl
01-02-2004, 06:26 PM
I thought pulasan was rapiah, but after the pic, nooo, rapiah has shorter hair and more round form.
And Ashley, I love mempelam or mangga muda. Fresh or preserved one, eaten by itself or mixed with sambal, or with bbq meats !.
lil~jo
01-03-2004, 05:44 AM
Rapiah, wow! another fruit I haven't heard of before.
How does that taste? is it like rumbutan aswel?
....MMMM....sambal, you don't get much Sambal down here in New Zealand, could someone tell me how to make Sambal and the ingredients?
(Since I can't buy it, maybe I could atleast try to make it)

02-27-2004, 06:17 AM
Well, helen clarke really is in trouble....

I haven't been to Malaysia but I think Thailand have similar kinds of fruits to those in Malaysia. I think Durian, Mangoesteen, Mangoes , well all kinds are nice.
But I don't know why I am always prefer Western fruits like cherry, peach, pair, blackberry, and blueberry, and the unforgetable strawberry. Their looks are so appearing and yummy. Sorry, I don't know why I writing this , but these fruits just came into my thought.

I guess what lai cheng hung meant was that he/she disliked peeling it?
my reason of disliking rumbutan is that ants are usually crawling through it's hair....so yeah...
But I do love it when....someone else peels it.
jtayk:- this thread is called tropical fruits gallore, I guess we can be leanient and say we can talk about all fruits.

Hey guys!
I like
Watermelons cos they're so juicy and sweet. really good when you're thirsty!
Starfruits cos they're so nice!
Honeydew cos they're nice too!
...come to think of it, most of the local fruits are nice! So I'll just skip the like part cos I like almost all the fruits and just go on over to the dislike part~
I dislike
Durians! ACtually I don't dislike them that much, I just try to stay away from them because of the after effects but my dad loves em so I always end up forced so... but yea.. I don't like them either.
Langsat! I don't like langsat but I like duku langsat..I don't know why..they're very similliar but I still prefer duku langsat!
Papaya! I really don't like papaya cos I'm 'jelak' (sick) of it! I used to eat a lot of it a few years back so after that I just lost my taste for it.
I think that's is :D

Is there any fruits which we can grow in Malaysia but not in Singapore?
I really don't know there nationality. I can only say that some durians are classy when they are top breed.
Edweenie
06-03-2006, 10:56 AM
DragonPrince I think Durians originated from Malaysia ^^ and yes, theyre classy when theyre top breed ...But now with news about GE, people are worrying about durians getting "injected" with sciencey (excuse me) stuff to make them classy and very nice on the inside..and thts not pure/natural breeding ..So dont you think durians or any other fruits should not be injected or enhanced by these GE thingys? ...
