View Full Version : Where to makan and yum-cha....

Another favourite Malaysian pastime is EATING OUT! :yeah:

In this thread, let's share the great makan (eating) places, favourite lepak haunts for yum-cha (having a drink) and post questions on whatever that's related to food!

I'll start with Kampar Loh She Fun. Being born and raised in Kampar, I love to sample the Kampar noodles that the Klang Valley has to offer and be a critic and review them. So far, the only stall that has met the standards of my Kampar palates is the stall at Ming Tien in Taman Megah, Kelana Jaya. Even my old schoolmates have given this stall the thumbs-up sign for meeting our approval of offering REAL Kampar Loh She Fun and its famous fishballs.

*Note: Kampar is the name of a small town. Loh She Fun is a type of rice noodle shaped like the mouse's tail.

Asam Laksa!!! My fave food of all time. Sourish, with little pieces of fish and with the tangy white rice noodle... yum yum!!!! But of cos the asam laksa must come frm north cos only north's asam laksa the best!!! usually people call it penang asam laksa but you will be surprise that kedah asam laksa also taste good. depends on where you eat it. so far in KL i havent like come across a really super good asam laksa but however this one is worth trying - ss 2 pasar malam there is this van and then you see a lot of ppl lining up for it - that's the one! so far that's one of the better laksa in KL.

Places to yam cha? well i dun have a usual place that i go to as my friends like to move abt quite frequently. however there is one place that we go more than often as it is like near all of us...centerpoint mamak - banana leaf. nothing special there. however, inside centerpoint in the center :bleh: there is this place to eat naan which is very nice. i can't remember what is the name of the place. check it out if you have the time.

Oh... I kinda feel a little homesick after reading what you guys have written... I don't know where to find all the good food anymore.

When I was still attending Sunway College I used to go to Ming Tian and, erm, almost forgot the name, ar, oh, Spectrum () and sometimes to SS15 (with my friends who were lucky enough to have cars), I think. Not sure exactly anymore where I went. SS15 or SS14 or something. Not sure anymore! Anyway, that's for yum-cha.

For regular meals, I normally went to Medan or Spectrum. Or one of those Chinese "coffee shop" right across the street from the side gates of Sunway College.

Anyway, I gotta check this thread regularly so I won't starve when I go home next year! Keep your suggestions coming! :wink2:

Vunsin, the Ming Tian that you went to, was that in Kelana Jaya? The giant hawker center that is inspired by Balinese decorations?

Bbsasa (somehow I suspected you were named Mei Mei :shifty:) - I've always been fascinated by the long queue at that SS2 pasar malam asamlaksa. I heard that the guys scolds people who try to jump queue.

I like the Masala Tea at Centerpoint. That Banana Leaf restarant serves good Roti Pisang too but I don't go to these 2 places because smokers love to hangout there.

Getting irritated with the smokers spoils my yum-char session.

To me, any hawker food or drink in Penang is the best.....hahah

There's another Ming Tian at Sunway, very close to Sunway Pyramid. I think the one at Kelana is it's branch or something cause I saw a poster of it at the Sunway Ming Tian and a "Just Open", if i my memory serves me right.

Really hate smokers too, spoils the eating mood.....

ashley: The Ming Tian I went to was right next to Sunway Pyramid, as nxw had guessed correctly. I didn't have a car so I could only go to places within walking distance from the Sunway Hostel most of the time. I think Ming Tian had a lot of brances everywhere. :wink2:

weeeee~~~~~~~ food! makes me hungry! yummy!!!

hmm... food ar? ok!
Sarawak Laksa
here in sarawak, the laksa taste absolutely differ from in KL or other place. its soooo.... spicy and hot! here, ppl rate laksa, and every yr, there's like a rating of best laksa. the best and well-known laksa is beside Ban-Hock road. i didn't find anythin gd bout it, cause to me, most laksa taste the same. anyway, those famous laksa will be paid at high price(and they just add 2 prawns into it! nth much!)

to me, the best is behind Sekama road. its spicy enough, and got lots of prawns, and fresh small chicken meat! wow~ just smell it and you can't resist! trust me!!! i'm the king, or expert when it comes to food!

I don't really know is there any nice place to yum cha...SS2 is definitely a very famous place to hang aroud..
I think some where around the SS2 food stall, is there a shop called Kei Dak Sek(eat in canto)?
The Mango topping with ice is really nice!! Besides that..they have all sort of diff. flavour...
Their dessert are quite good too! I forgot...what it is called..

Miss_gun : Are u referring to KTZ? i used to go there and eat their Mango Sai Mai Lou all the time.. they also have honey dew, kiwi...etc i think.! and their ' fa sang wu' and 'zhi ma wu' are not bad too. but it's kinda overpriced though. 5 bucks for dessert.... i'd rather eat at a mamak stall. does anyone know of any more cheap and nice dessert place?

woah you guys are fast! anyways miss gun there is also another branch in kepong which should be the original place. there the price is cheaper.

sorry ashley and nxw i am sorta a smoker - well a social one anyways, so i can't say the same on your opinion on smokers. anyways, i wont smoke if ppl around me arent smokers so i hate smokers who arent considerate abt other non-smokers feelings.

ashley hahaha well guess what i know another mei mei whose english name is also melisa but only one 's' but her surname is yim instead.

hmmm, well there is this mamak in sentul call naili's. the place's concept is like going to the beach side. the food is not bad, would recommend the nasi lemak.

if you like 'lou she fun' then you can go to petaling street there. the claypot 'lou she fun' is real good and also the 'chau siew yok' - non halal of cos is the best! they have a branch in TTDI call mama's kitchen or something like that, forgot already.

oh yeah subang ss15 there is this place that have quite a nice tom yam fried rice (my fave!). used to go there a lot when i was studying in subang. talking abt subang and tom yam ... the tom yam in gazebo ss 15 - the shop is call 'chao phraya' - gree words with yellow background if i am not mistaken is totally awesome!~!~!

well, will refresh my memory for more places to eat. in the meantime cheerio!

Oh, I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of things exciting in KL. I didn't really get to go anywhere (especially at night!) since I can't drive (even if I can I'm sure there won't be any car for me ), and I don't have too many friends around here to jalan-jalan cari makan with.

And I thought Ampang Yong Tau Foo is a must-try.

Miss_gun : Are u referring to KTZ?

Ooh. That place is always penuh one. And my husband likes their yam cake and pulut rice (loh mai farn). I think that place is over-rated. The food cost so much!

I'm hearing so much praise about good food in SS15, I must really get my butt there one day. And I will try the TTDI Claypot Loh She Fun and the roasted pork. I've always wanted to but changed my mind because I thought they only served claypot noodles and nothing else.

Somebody quoted ABC as their favourite drink. I like the ones served at SS2's Medan Selera. Not the popular side stall, but one in the middle somewhere.

And I want to mention bread. Have you gusy ever queued at Rotiboy for that famous bun?

cmy_185
12-24-2003, 05:10 AM
yeap i think KTZ is overrated and over priced! that's why need to find a new ' tong sui' place!

yah ashley come over to SS15 and we go eat good food.hehe. bbsasa will bring us..^^

i've eaten Rotiboy b4. it's nice.. but never queued up for it! i can smell rotiboy froma block away..hehe.

ashley, i know one Rotiboy shop at Low Yat. The mexican buns are very good, yum.

pop, i'm from Shah Alam, i do go to Klang and makan but not often. But i don't really know the whole Klang, the roads are too confusing.

hmmm... just now went yam cha with my friends and was just discussing nice new place to makan. there is this place in sri petaling there near the carrefour - hakka mee - it's really nice and they have a branch in sec 17 too. ohhh there is this seafood place supposedly call - fish pond - near tropicana there. the food is good and the price is cheap too. another good chinese restaurant would be this place call paris in ss2 - fast, cheap and good! klang ah?? i remember going to this place in the outskirt of klang call teluk gong or something like that - the seafood is quite good and it's cheap too.

Alvin a.k.a pop, why don't you tell us where to find the best Bah Kut Teh in Klang? I've tried the one at the Klang Hokkien Association and another shop near the market area.

OMG i've totally been to Teluk Gong although i have say it took a while to get in and out of that place. I think everyone's been raving abt the seafood and my friends and i waited for a while before getting a table.... you know by doing the usual thing, standing behind ppl eating hoping they will leave soon. In any case that is a tough place to find don't think i will be going there again on my next trip back.

For Bak Kut Teh i don't know if there is any good ones in Subang, i think Klang in general gets the overall votes for having the best one there. I think the one i have been to is the one in Berkeley....one of the shop lots there. :)

talks about Teluk Gong, there is one new restaurant open along the road of teluk gong, much more bigger and nicer~i went n try last week, and its nice, same as one of the inside restaurant called "coconut flower" and the new one is called " gelmarie bay" i guess
have a try?~

and i would like to recommend one seafood noodle which located at jalan segambut, nearby the total office center~u all should try out and see,its relly tasty, got diff kind of soup, but i like the curry one, others like tomyam and chicken soup i guess
and the ingredient inside is reli nice...but it cost rm10 per bowl~haha...abit expensive, and only for morning n afternnon i guess, cos i always went there in the morning,rm10 for my breakfast....hahhaa..still can afford gua,but dunbe always :p

anybody like dim sum?i like the dim sum restaurant in taman connought, cheras there~cheap and variety of choices

ashley
01-06-2004, 01:43 AM
Alvin... how can you NOT know Teluk Gong? I find this amusing because I've come across 2 other Klang friends who draw blank when I asked about that place. Don't you Klang people go indulge in the famous seafood there?

MeiMei & Mei Yee I guess the bah kut teh recommendations are subjective to what type a person likes. The overly heavy with herbs or the not-so herbal types. Personally, I don't like thick soups... you know, how some BKT soup can be thick , almost like gravy. I like to put the soup in my rice and , like a child, drink the soup with rice in it. There's also this otehr variation of BKT, the pepperish type. I like that one.

And about toddy, that's the only form of alcohol I like :) and my father says I'm "cheap". But he was the one who made me try when I was younger... and I 'm hooked on its taste and flavour. But it's so difficult to get good ones.

oh yeah and I found some interesting sites all about places to eat in Malaysia. Quite interesting here's the links:

during chinese new year i went back to ipoh and savoured curry noodles at "dong gu ting" (mushroom pavillion in canto) wah liao eh! so good!
all my relatives said that this is the most popular curry noodles in ipoh. although i'm not that good at eating spicy foods but this curry noodles certainly brought life to my tastebuds! :excited:

dong gu ting is situated in ipoh garden, or izzit canning garden? anyway, all ipoh people know the place. to ipoh fans of jay, great job!

ps: kl curry noodles are lousy.........

oh, has anyone heard of tom yam rice?

ashley
01-26-2004, 05:34 AM
Xiaoern - hi! Who's in Ipoh? Your relatives? Curry noodles at a mushroom pavillion in Canning Garden? Hm - wonder if it's Wooley? I mean I know of a good makan place and it's in Ipoh Garden but I know it as Wooley - perhaps the Chinese call it Dong Gu Ting . Anyway, I like the Char Siew Pau there. And the yau-yu-kangkong.

Tom Yam rice? Did you eat that in Ipoh too? I know fried tomyam meehoon (best!) but I've not tasted Tom Yam rice before.

EDIT : (posted 30 Jan)

Meimei a.k.a bbsasa - I went to try the Claypot Lou She Fun restaurant at TTDI last night cos I remember you telling us that the roasted pork is good. I don't know if the chief cook was still on CNY leave or if he left, but the dish that was whipped out was swimming in 2 cm deep in oil !! :-x And it wasn't crunchy and it was BLACK. But the other dish I ordered was ok - the lotus leaf fish. So I guess I may go back again some other time. And give the roasted pork another try.

tom yam rice is being sold everywhere in subang jaya. i never heard of it at first, but when a friend of mine ordered it, i was at shock coz people usually have tom yam noodles instead of rice.....
in case you wonder which part of subang, it's somewhere around taylor's college.
my relatives say that ipoh is famous for tauge-chicken rice, white coffee, salted chicken, and this particular dim sum restaurant-Foh San.
i've eaten dim sum at this restaurant before, but what i can remember is the price of it's dim sum is pricey.......

ss2 is also a haven for food lovers. :wink2: go there!

Has anyone been to Restoran Mohsin in TTDI? The one near the market? This place has much appeal but the food is totally horrible. The teh tariks are acceptable but I find no oomph in their curry and sambal. The capati taste so artificial... and I suspect they served me the franchised capati dough instead of something from their own kitchen.

But the place is filled up day and night. :hmm:

If you guys are talking about yumcha and makan, the best place [which is cheap and has tasty foods] are mamaks. I know this mamak which is consider HIGH-CLASS, it has the same food as a normal mamak stall, Its located in Subang Jaya.. They say the food there are really expensive.. The name is Gazebo. Anyone 'pernah' been there..?? I haven't although I'm telling you guys about it now..

cync.jay: i think you are probably talking abt jalan alor and yup the food is good there! got something that is good there which i forgot wat isit *scratch head* tell you once i remember.

kimberly: i have been to gazebo. it's not that high class, it's just expensive so i guess that's why ppl say it's high class. a normal iced limau tea mamak style only cost you abt rm1.20 possibly but there it will cost you abt rm3.50 or so. there is another opposite sunway hotel, i think there would be consider much more expensive. this gazebo is a chain from this famous mamak called ravi's. have you heard of them? quite famous especially to ppl who live around peejay.

well, if you love banana leaf rice... there is this place in sec 17 called kanna curry house. yum yum!!!! ermmm, it's quite near ss2 actually... if you know where this hotel called lisa de inn then it's somewhere around there.

Places I always go out makan or yum cha is only Mamak Tanjung Bistro at SS18.
So far, I've been to so many mamaks, I still think that this Mamak Bistro has the best teh ice. Everytime when I try other mamak's teh ice is either more condenced milk then the teh or another way round, never balanced.
Other place to makan, is chinese "coffee shop" with so many choices of food there. :)

For buffet, there's this hotel called Equatorial at Kuala Lumpur. Is a Japanese buffet though, cost around RM50 per-person. The Japanese food served there is very nice! They even have sukiyaki (hot-pot), tenpura (fried prawns) and lotsa salmon sushi. You guys should try there one day. Is a little expensive though.
Eating buffet is like stuffing yourself with all the food, and after all that stuffing you turned fat >.< and it's time for work out.
