Yohoo...let's have a local artists' thread! We can dicuss about them here! :wink2:
Actually, I am very proud of Dato Michelle Yeoh! She is an international star now, well-known for her kung-fu stunts
besides that, I think Malaysia has quite a lot of good singers too!
Michael and Victor! I will always love them..and I don't understand why they must go solo!
Liang Jing Ru! I like her songs..and she sings quite well! And she reminds me of her cousin? Z-Chen!
Angelica Lee sin-jie made us proud too! Actually her acting career is more successful than her singing career.
Hmm...there are quite a few Malay artists..but too bad I don't know them!
Siti Nurhaliza? I see her poster everywhere ...
Maybe Shai^Cello can tell us about it!
Who do you like? Post them!

Oh, don't forget Penny Tai as well. She's a very talented singer, songwriter and composer. She's a stand-out for daring to be different in her music and fashion style.

Chang Tong Liang is really getting popular. He's even more well known than Kenny Koh, this year's Astro Talent Quest winner. I see billboards advertistments with Tong Liang's face on it.
For Chinese artistes, I like Z.Chen best.
For Malays, I like Anuar Zain , Sheila Majid and Innuendo. I'm not crazy about Siti Nurhaliza because I think I've had an overdose of her already. She's doing Jusco, she's doing tmNet, she'd doing so many endorsements that I can't help but say "Huh? Siti again?".

I've got 2 questions.
Kwan Te Hui ... the guy (lousy actor) in Astro's Battle against Evil... is he a Malaysian?
And Candy Loh Hoi Yam... is she also Malaysian?

I've got 2 questions.
Kwan Te Hui ... the guy (lousy actor) in Astro's Battle against Evil... is he a Malaysian?
And Candy Loh Hoi Yam... is she also Malaysian?Yeah, he is from Malaysia...
but...I am not sure about Candy Lo. :?

Isn't Candy Lo from Hong Kong?
Anyway, thanks for starting this very informative thread. As some of you already know, I've been away from "home" for quite a while so I'm a little outdated when it comes to new things in Malaysia. Also, I'm older than most of you so the artists that were popular (and that I knew!) during "my time" would not be popular anymore. And I don't know 90% of the new people.
I've heard of Jasmine (this is her new name! Fish is hideous...) Leung. She's pretty good and I like her songs.
Z-Chen is totally awesome. He's like the new R&B prince. His voice is so awesome and I totally love all of his songs! I have all his albums.
I used to like Michael & Victor too. Both of them have really unique voices. Too bad they've gone separate ways...
Kwan Te Hui is Malaysian. He used to be kinda popular when I was in secondary school, along with his "rival" Eric Moo. But then of course after Eric got his break in Hong Kong and Taiwan he claimed to be Singaporean.
I'm not too sure about the Malay artists... I used to be crazy about K.R.U. but I'm not sure what happened to them... I also used to like Ella, Ning Baizura, and Sheila Majid.

*Screams*
VUNSIN!!!! I loved Eric Moo. Thanks for bringing up his name. It sure tells how old one is to know Eric Moo and his controversial claim. In fact, the guy was born in Mambang Di Awan, a small village near Kampar, my hometown.
I loved his ballads. They were exceptionally good for a local Chinese singer, back when local Chinese singers were still doing the 'cha cha" beat songs.
About Candy Lo - is she the Candy Lo who did a duet with Siti Nurhaliza a few years back? I thought that Candy was a Malaysian.
I like Z-Chen's songs but just a normal "like", not like Jay's. But his Cantonese song sounds a little funny to me...hahah
About Siti Nurhaliza's face appearing everywhere, it's just like any company who want publicity so they need a famous and popular artist. But i have to admit that she's got a great voice.
vunsin
12-23-2003, 07:59 AM
ashley: There's also a "controversy" about Eric Moo dumping his girlfriend of more than 10 years after he became famous. The girl had been with him through thick and thin but he just dumped her after he got famous... People were pissed at him...
I'm not sure if we're talking about the same Candy Lo... Let me find out more when I have the time... I'm trying to do 10 things at once right now...
nxw: I don't think Cantonese is Z-Chen's main dialect, but I can't be sure. It's okay... I think most West Malaysians speak Cantonese like that, actually. :wink2:
ashley
12-23-2003, 08:11 AM
nxw are you refering to Z.Chen's latest album where he sings a Cantonese song? He sings the same number in Mandarin too, right ... I think it was the 1st and last songs in the album?
When he sings the Cantonese version, i think he was using the same lyrics so it sounds very inflexible.
most West Malaysians speak Cantonese like that, actually. Are you talking about that slight Hokkien accent? :)
Are you Hakka, Vunsin? There are a lot of Hakkas in Sabah.
vunsin
12-23-2003, 08:27 AM
ashley: I'm not sure if that's Hokkien accent or not, but most West Malaysians who speak Cantonese speak it with an accent. Actually I don't think Z-Chen's "accent" is really noticeable in that song. Eric Moo still had that "accent" when he acted in those HK movies, but Angie Cheung has lost her accent. Angelica Lee still has a tiny tiny bit...
I'm Hakka and my grandparents are from Hong Kong. Actually in my hometown, Sandakan, everyone speaks Cantonese. And the Cantonese we speak is very close to that spoken in Hong Kong. I think Sandakan used to be called "Little Hong Kong" but I'm not sure why. Anyway, Sandakan used to be really prosperous and many artists have performed there before during my parents' younger years. I think even Teresa Teng.
ashley
12-23-2003, 09:51 AM
Maybe it's because of migrants like your grandparents that Sandakan is called Little HK? I didn't know there are many Cantonese speakers in Sandakan. The few Chinese that I know from there all speak either Mandarin or Hakka.
I remember having a lot of communication problems when I was at Polytechnic and later at the University. Many Chinese students expect me to converse in Mandarin but I know only Cantonese. And my Canto is only cukup cari makan...I can only converse simple Canto.
Anyway, I'm proud of those stars who made it big in HK and Taiwan. Lee Sin Jie especially, for winning Best Actress .

Yes, probably because there are many Hong Kong migrants... :wink2:

Nicholas Zhang Dong Liang, hmm... the Kuching boy who got famous just because he sings other ppl's song(Sunset), but his new song, Fu Chu is very nice!
hey~Fish Leong, is she fish leong? anyway, i hope that i didn got wrong, she is so sexy! so hot with her new look! and her song is so nice! i didn't got the chance to listen to her new song, what is the title anyway?

anyways, i dun think that candy lo is malaysian. she seems hongkie to me. i think z chen singing in canto is funny cos we are used to hearing him sing in mandarin, i kinda like that song though.. something abt plane flying away.
vunsin: KRU is still around, though they havent like come up with anything new except the fact that yusry married era fazira. oh yeah i dun think only west malaysian's speak canton with an accent. in fact northerners too. i have been told that my canto sound very funny cos i speak hokkien so i kinda got this hokkien slang. but anyways not everyone will have that.

Let's go back to our favorite Malaysian artists. :wink2:
Sorry to continue with this off-topic discussion.
Most Chinese in the east coast of Sabah, especially Sandakan, speak Cantonese. Actually from what I discovered (because I have several friends who are from Sandakan), their ancestors were originally from Hong Kong. And since the area was mostly populated by Hongkies, hence the name 'Little Hong Kong'. And yes, till today, people in Sandakan has a stronger Hong Kong-Cantonese accent compared to other parts in Malaysia.
In the west coast, especially Kota Kinabalu, Kudat and places around this part, the Chinese are mostly Hakkas and Hokkiens. I am a Hakka myself but our family was not from Sabah actually, so forget me anyway. Most of the people here can speak Hakka, or at least understand the language. I even have a non-Chinese ex-classmate who can understand Hakka a lot better than me simply because the neighbourhood is full of Hakka-speaking Chinese.
So, through my observation, I think the Chinese who came from China to Sabah were mostly Cantonese. I have a lot of Sabahan friends who have resided in Sabah since their ancestors' generation with Cantonese origin (but you have to be aware, in Sabah (except the east coast), A LOT of Chinese were already intermixed with the locals so there weren't many pure Chinese anymore). I think the Hakkas and Hokkiens there are a younger generation from the Chinese in Peninsula who migrated there.
Anyway, back to the topic. A few days ago, I saw a performance by some new artistes at Times Square. My friend told me one of the artistes is quite popular in Taiwan and came from Sabah. I wonder if anybody heard of her?
vunsin
12-24-2003, 11:39 AM
*coughcough* I've been hinting enough. So this is the gentle "warning" and a kind suggestion: You guys are welcome to start a new topic if you want to talk about Sabahans, their Hong Kong ancestors, Cantonese, etc. If we go anymore off-topic this thread will be split (and I haven't learned how to do it exactly, so...) into another topic and we'll end up with two anyway. This is an interesting topic and I'm interested in it too, but here's not the right place to continue this discussion, alright? :wink2:
haha chill out vunsin  they won't go far with that topic :D
anywayz i will continue with the topic...i've read all you guys' posts but i didn't see anybody mentioning about chen ee ee?
anybody knows about her? i read in the newspaper that she is the new malaysian chinese singer, alongside with chang tong liang
she received the same vocal training from sun yan zi's vocal trainer!!
means sun yan zi is her senior!!
so far i haven't heard her song yet, but i heard my friend said that she is gaining popularity now
and there's this ex-astro-talent-quest-winner whose name is lam kim fai(in cantonese)...he had a song out rite? the one where he filmed the video with a girl in a comic store?
i like that song...anybody knew the title or where i can download it?
erm i heard my bro said that taiko(pronounced as thigh-kou) is actually KRU...remember taiko?
they sang one upbeat song and entered the hitz.fm airplay long ago
argh...my memory is not serving me well
i only know that in that song they sang in a poetic ammo way 'the taiko the taiko'
vunsin, i love KRU too...loved their song 'apa saja', 'semuanya ok' and 'ohh la la'
siti nurhaliza is very pretty..but sometimes she looks like a chinese to me...maybe that's what makes her pretty haha
have her song 'bukan cinta biasa' great song!

pop: You might not have noticed, but I'm a Jr. Mod and I'm just doing my job - moderating this forum. :wink2:
KRU is awesome. I remember when I was in secondary school I had to buy their tapes (yeah, tapes, I'm THAT old) secretly because my mom disapprove of my listening to Malay songs. And then I had to hide those tapes and only listen to them when she wasn't home.
Donny
12-25-2003, 08:43 AM
haha.... bad gurl, VUNSIN! i'l tell your mama! hey, i also buy tapes back then in BSB's time.
KRU?, a long time ago group, right?
...chen ee ee...
??? :hmm: never heard before! hihi...
e`Sprit :bonk: listen to what our ta^jie^mod^Vunsin, ok? :offtopic: is :offtopic: don't make her "nan-juo-ren". take the advice, gurl.
ashley jie, i don't really update myself with Z-Chen's albums, but i know it the "fei gei" song (sorry, don't know title). Same lyrics?, that would definitly make it sound funny, to me that is.
Eason Chan's song that is originally sang in mandarin sounds ok, but his originally canto songs that he sang in mandarin sounds funny. But then, it's my ears that's having that problem..haha.
Yeah, Taiko is KRU, but their digital version (sort of like Gorillaz), i think.
pop, her new song Debaran Cinta not bad what, very different from her usual "high pitch" songs. Yeah, Siti's very pretty, but her english....haha
ashley
12-27-2003, 02:21 AM
*Swings the attention back to Malaysian artiste*
I only see KRU as a bunch of good-looking brothers who are trying to sing gwai-lo style. I don't really think they sound good, in fact, I don't think they should even be singing. Maybe they do produce and write good songs but when they sing, I think they screech.
Now Ruffedge, Innuendo, Too-Phat and V"something"... those R&B brothers are cool and suave. They're silky smooth in their harmonizing and eventhough they're also trying to do it the gwai-lo style, I think they're making it better than KRU.
vunsin
12-27-2003, 06:32 AM
But ashley, KRU's style was different from the other groups'. At least, from Innuendo's. I haven't really heard any songs from the other groups. To me, Innuendo's style was more R&B while KRU's style was more Rap/Hip-Hop. Well, whenever somebody does Rap/Hip-Hop there are always accusations that they're copying the gwai-los. I still think they're cool though. At least they were the pioneers. :wink2: They did it back when people still didn't accept those kind of styles.

vunsin,
Sorry with the previous post. Had a strong urge to write. At least I did stick to the main topic here in the last paragraph, aye? :wink2:
Donny,
Don't worry, Donny. Although I might be a bit too stubborn, I'm also known to be a very obedient girl and highly responsible (LOL, pardon me for over-exaggerating, can't help it). I certainly won't feel good myself making vunsin-jie 'nan zuo ren'. :bleh:
pop,
I read about Chen Ee Ee too in the newspaper. In my previous post when I mentioned these new artistes performing in Times Square, Chen Ee Ee was also one of them there. I did not pay too much attention though because I was busier shopping around. I saw her MV before in the TV (I forgot which show, either AEC Music Station or Mandarin MOD). Personally, her vocal wasn't as impressive as the article might made it sound like, or probably it's the song.

~just a funny thing that i wanna share with ya all! : i like yvonne shi hui shing. but... back then when she just came out, i only know her as Yvonne. i don't know her chinese name. anyway, few months ago, she came to Kch, just near to my house to hav a fan regroupment. i don't know who the hell that gal was when the say :"shi hui shing is comin!!!" so, i didn go. i got the tickets, you know. but i didn go cause i thought that it was a old lady or what unpopular chick. the next day, i heard her FULL NAME on myFM, the DJ say :"Yvonne SHI HUI SHING!!!" i was like :"huh? what the~" and i really laugh out at how stupiak i am, and i really regret not goin, especially when my friends show me the pics at that nite. ggrr~~!!

Anyway, did anyone watch Juara Lagu yesterday?I never knew Misha Omar had a wonderful and powerful voice! :excited: Her performance yesterday was superb (she sang Bunga-Bunga Cinta). She beaten Siti Nurhaliza to be the overall winner (besides being the overall winner, she has also won the award for best balada song and best vocal). I'm happy becoz of the fact that Siti only took home ONE award this year compared to the previous years in which she took home more than 3 awards  .Um..anyway,i now realise that Misha has a really really wonderful voice.I like her already! :yeah:

I don't like Jason Lo after reading about his 'over' performance at one of those award shows. It seems he took a sip of water and showered it at the spectators.

Donny,
Yar, Donny. I can sense THAT 'sarcasm'. Thank you very much.
Chen Ee Ee is a new artiste. It's not surprising if you've not heard of her before. I wouldn't have known her myself if I hadn't been watching too much MVs and reading the newspaper.
The only song I ever heard from (Jason) Lo was Evening News. Honestly I like that song but that's all. I don't know him anymore than that.
This reminds me of another group worth mentioning. Juliet the Orange! I absolutely loved their song Eyelash! By the way, what happened to them?
Too Phat is good too. And so is Poetic Ammo. Wow, I forgot how many good artistes Malaysia actually has. I'm going to get more of their songs!
I don't listen to Malay songs that much. Usually I just overhear them somewhere or from words of mouth. And I ONLY pay attention when it's a really good song. I probably can only recognize Siti Nurhaliza's songs because I'm used to singing her songs in karaoke. Besides her, the other Malay songs I sing are of Kris Dayanti, yeah, but that's Indonesian. Haha. (Actually Indonesians have a lot of nice Malay songs.) Glad to hear that finally someone else other than Siti is winning awards. It gets so tiring hearing the same winner years after years. It's as if Malaysia has run out of talents.

You have 8TV? I thought they only launch it next month? I tried tuning it before but couldn't find it. I guess we couldn't receive the signal from where I live. That's so unfair because we don't have Channel 9 as well!!!
Hmmm, so anybody know of this new Malaysian female artiste supposedly from Sabah?

edele My 8TV reception is much better than Ch9, eventhough the latter has been officially launched. I'm not sure if 8TV can be received in Malacca now.
:secret: *goes off-topic*
I agree that Indonesian singers and songs are better.
Hm - I remember Juliet the Orange. The name was so 'fresh'. The duo has separated and are pursuing individual goals , NOT in singing. I think one of them is a lawyer now. Maybe I'm wrong.

Jason Lo? his MVs are kinda weird, but his songs are gd. of cause, a little funny too~ to me lar~ to others, i don't know.

hi ppl...
My i already have terrible headache reading each and every malaysian post around until i cant even think anymore....(that's the penalty for not being around for two half weeks...exams and stuffs)
U guys can hit me on the head of not knowing penny tai is malaysian...hehe....
I like Z. Chen but not as much as to buy his cd...(i'm already cd-allowance-broke!)...but he's quite nice and always smiling...I always saw M-girls pics but never heard their song (or maybe i did but didnt realize it...hm....)
Siti Nurhaliza? I'm not a fan since she's everywhere...I mean not just her pictures but also voice...do u know that average malay girls have the same voice cord with siti? that explains why Elly Mazlein and Intan Sarafina sounds like her...but Siti gets all the name cuz she's the first with that vocal came out in business and have all these strategies to outnumbered others...so, in terms of voice, i tak kagum but in terms of creativity...well, maybe it's hard to admit it but she's quite brainy (er...not in terms of education...)
Of course i like M.Nasir cuz I like musician more than recording artist cuz they're more original...also hm...let me think...Reshmonu is nice but he sings slow R&B...slow rnb tends to make me sleepy a lot... Misha Omar's a nice girl...once my aunt terserempak her in a lift and she smiled to her 'ramah'ly eventhough at that time, my aunt never know that there's MISHA OMAR existed in the business!
OAG, Ruff Edge and all that Positive Tone stars are good.... I dun like KRU cuz they are not that original...i realized that that song 'SENGSARA' that KRU wrote for Ezlynn sounds like Ultraman GAia's themesong...Hi Hi Bye Bye sounds like 'Bye Bye Bye' and 'It's Gonna be Me'...and TYCo's sound is quite...messy berbanding Gorrilaz and Too Phat song feat Camelia. and most BBoyz hate them (my bro's a former shah alam's bboyz..he told me dat..)...but dat's my opinionla....
one thing i dun like about malay music business is dat the sound tends to sound the same and the MV....oh, no...not the MV....other than light things falling down from the sky or not-so beautiful model looks depressed, they cant think of sth else....(like Siti went to Indonesia to make a clip, and it doesnt look much like Indonesia....what a waste...)
p/s : Malaysian artist will kill ppl like me for not being 'patriotic'..ehehe

OAG's MVs are pretty cool too!I especially like their "Slumber" mv which features this cartoon thingy. So cute... not like other Malaysian artists mvs.Pretty lousy.
Oh..have anyone heard of this group called BABY? Eww..i dislike em'.What kind of a name is BABY?They're all 4 grown up guys and they use this BABY as the name of their group.. And their songs aren't that special and that's why i cant remember any of their songs--not even humming the tunes. :?
ashley

BABY? Does it comprise of 4 pretty lasses?
I don't even like By-U (Bayu?). Maybe they are good singers individually , but whoever picked them to form a group should be sacked. They were like the winners in this "Pop Stars" conetst , right? I find they cannot harmonize well and they look like they're trying to out-perform each other.
oohhh, the pop stars thingy.... copying the british. i think malaysian wants another group like BARDOT.
i just watch an episod, and i stopped watching. haha
anyone heard of a malay band called VE.
they sang a song called AYU. ohhhh, that song was soooooooooo nice. it's something like acapella + R&B . i definately recomend this song. i'll upload it later for u guys. i never knew malaysia would have such an outstanding band. but it's quite disappointed, i only heard one of their songs. couldnt find more.
and you guys heard of CHEN YI YI??
she's another new singer. i heard she got a good look and voice too. i cant remember the name of her song. but some DJ said she got the potential.
i'm looking forward to her songs... ^_^
ashley

I know VE!! They are always dressed suave-ly, like it's winter or something :shifty: .
But I love the R&B groups we have in malaysia - Innuendo, Ruffedge, VE... :slug: hmm... there aren't R&B girl groups yet.
June, they've been talking about this Chen Ee Ee for a while (if you have time, read the old posts in this thread).
What does everyone think of Datu Michelle Yeoh? I think she's losing her touch. Frankly, the only worth seeing movie from her was Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I don't like how she portrays a 'hard' character all the time. But she's doing Malaysia proud.
ops! ahaaha, i only flip through page 1 and 2 !
thank you for telling me.
michelle yeoh, she got an award with my college headmaster(tatsun hoi). i cant remember whats the name of the award. something like top 10 most young successful ah.... haha not sure.
later she's coming out with another movie,
i saw the preview (anyone of u see it?).
she was riding a motorbike flying over the great white wall. hahhahaa...
yah, she's definately doing malaysia proud. :yeah:

BABY who? the name itself makes me wanna puke... By'u....i think the way they look for the members of the group are wrong. if u wanna make a group, u shouldnt go and find all over the edge voices but instead those with diff. keys right? (Chewah...macamla aku ni pandai sangat...!)... and remember those who choose them...harith iskandar (hm...is he a singer?), yasmin yusuf (hm...the only time i heard her singsong voice is when I'm travelling in LRT..that "Next station..." voice)...Johari Teh (hm...dunno much bout him)...
Yeah....V.E's great! like them (like...not love..like)..and that Leh guy who looks sometimes like Snoop Dogg always sings dgn poyo-nyer....hehe...
hey...i like that Fish Leong's song they showed on e-space arituh....what's that called ha, Ashley-jie???

Dayang Nurfaizah is a great singer too. she and Misha Omar... what a great voice!
Most of my friends dunno dat we've a lot of talented artists, who r famous in other countries besides malaysia and indonesia. asyik-asyik siti... bosan aku. z chen, fish leong... ramai lagi artis femes, member!

Hey, I just remember one Malay singer I used to REALLY like! She's Amy Mastura! Does anyone know or remember her? She used to be an air stewardess and then she won the Asia Bagus singing contest and released a few albums. She also sang a duet with Tommy Page (who was really hot during the late 80s and early 90s). I'm just wondering what happened to her.
cmy_185
01-12-2004, 05:51 AM
lol. i used to like her too after she won Asia Bagus. do u remember what song she sang in the finals? i'm quessing a sheila majid song or an indonesion song..lol.can't remember. i used to watch Asia Bagus every week!
and i also remember another Male singer who won, i really love the way he sang Richard Marx's song..my fave song..he was playing with a guitar, do u remember?hehe.
anyway, i still see Amy Mastura in a hair dye ad.hehe. dunno her other activities..

Haha... Nope, I don't remember what song she sang in the finals. I don't remember any other winners except for Nisa Lin Chia-Yi from Taiwan. She released a few albums and then disappeared as well.

Amy Mastura got married and has a daughter now, Vuns. She married a Chinese guy (tall and macho) and they used to be neighbours.
She's more into acting than singing now. And she endorses a lot of beauty products (Bigen hair colours, Lux etc).
Tommy Page? I have a dreadful feeling that only Malaysians know him. He must be quite old now - 30s?
shai^cello
01-14-2004, 06:58 AM
yeah, his name is Alvin...somehow have a similar look like the late Leslie Cheung (that is after he cut his hair). Now he's also as popular as Amy...haha...
ashley
01-14-2004, 07:08 AM
Alvin looks like Leslie Cheung, shai?
Mane ada?..... :glug:
I didn't realised he cut his hair. I was about to tell Vuns that Amy loves her husband's tochang and she confessed that long hair makes a man sexy.
(not to me though).

Thanks ashley for the info! Do you happen to have pix of her husband or the wedding? I'm getting greedy.
:hmm: About the man with long hair thing, it really depends on the particular style and cut AND the person. Whatever looks good on the guy is fine, actually.
Tommy Page... Well... I think people from other countries should know him too. It's just that he was most popular in SE Asia. Do you know his grandma was Chinese or something?
ashley
01-15-2004, 09:51 AM
No, I didn't know he's a quarter Chinese. But he had this Elvis-like face and hair-style and this sultry (sissy) voice when he sang.
Wonder if he still sings.
I couldn't find any jpeg pics of Amy and her husband, Vuns. Sorry...

m'sian artistes i like? Definitely PENNY TAI!!! Never thought much of her till I heard her sing live. Really really talented! By the way, she'll be performing live at the national level chinese new year open house in JB's Danga Bay so those who're around here can go see. :)
Fish Leong is good too.
i dun listen much to malay artistes these days. I guess i'm from the KRU,Feminin,Exist generation..
others, Juliet the Orange was good, there was one song i really really liked but i just can't recall the song name. aarghh..:bang: received quite a lot of air play on singapore radio at that time. Jason Lo, Too Phat, Poetic Ammo are not bad too.
Talking bout Asia Bagus,I remember one other winner, Construction Site from Singapore. They were a duo but they've disbanded now i think. However, one half of them, Sheikh Haikel is still around. He has an album out now and i really like his 'Wit-ulah" song.

Oh... and I have another question regarding another artist who's kinda "disappeared" from the entertainment scene. Anybody knows Frennie Hew (Mandarin: Qiu Cai Hua, Cantonese: Yau Choi Wah)? She was Miss Malaysia (forgot the year) and then she had a brief singing career. Her voice wasn't all that great so she didn't quite make it big. She was quite pretty though. I like her looks. Um...who are M girls?Never heard of them before. And CT girls..saw them once when they went for this chinese award show which was held in M'sia some time back (cant remember its [the award show] name).I bet they werent very popular coz when they walked on the red carpet,it seemed like nobody knew them and no one cheered or made those "wooo..ahh.." sound.4 lil princess--i'm not sure whether the 4 girls i have in mind now are the 4 lil princess since there are lots of these kind of groups nowadays. But these kids(not just 4 lil princess, but for other "all-kids-group" as well)...ahh..i really dunno what to say bout them. Most of them come out perhaps once a year and that's when the CNY comes (they'll start singing all those CNY songs  ).It's very annoying coz it's not just they are ruining all those wonderful CNY songs which have been around for many many years...but their voices really make me go :glug: .Most of the time..they'll scream their lungs out especially when it comes to the part which require them to sing in high note. They make my ears bleed. :retard:

But nowadays, I'm really proud to see so many talented Malaysian artistes who're making it big overseas! :excited: Now many people know about Malaysia too. :)
Yes, Liang Jing Ru has a really good voice. But like kahel, I'm overwhelmed by Penny Tai's talent. I get all emotional and even have to resist the urge to cry sometimes when I listen to her songs. Man... she wrote all those songs herself (melody and lyrics). Awesome...

vuns-jie : yup, miss_gun right also (Hmm..why i'm speaking manglish?)...neways... Hong Kong maybe they know a lot but Taiwanese, Singaporean, and even Malaysia...not much...it is only if they are good looking like those F4 guys or really really popular like Lee Hom... even David Tao and Jay Chou is not much of a celebrity btw malays (ok, unless if they can speak chinese). I'm not saying all, just most of em. Like Stephen Chow, malays never really bothered b4 cuz he's not much of an eye-candy, but after Shaolin Soccer, I can see lotsa fans out there (and get kinda cranky since everybody loves him, it doesn't feel special anymore)... one of the reason that I love jay is that I won't find my malay pals go ga-ga over Jay...it's kinda disturbing...haha...j/k... when u like someone that nobody from ur circle knows, it feels special cuz then ppl will go "Jay who?" and then they will go "hmph...not so handsome"... and if they dun know the singer or actor they will give nickname like ...Dicky Cheung, they call him 'Fong Si Yuk' cuz his character as Fung Sai Yuk are quite popular among malays..and Barbie Hsu still been called 'San Chai'.
I dun really care about that but I'm sad that good singer like Penny Dai aren't known in her own birthplace by the malays...she's damn good!

Ramlee song thing, Norman went into politics, Yusri married Erra Fazira - the actress which I absolutely hate!), I think I have to go on... haha... their song are more R&B now, and their newest is their Greatest Hit album which have all the slow song from their old albums and two or three new songs... (I can't say if its good or not cuz, if my brother catch me listening to KRU he will immediately hate me for the rest of his life...)

the porn pic thing...there was this one hacker who was a fanatic of KRU found several pictures of Edry and Linda Rafar (actress-former rumoured gf) naked in his room in their PC....they denied it but ironically, later after that, Linda got married to a car racer and followed by Edry just afterwards... I didn't believe it at first, but my uncle who was the Asst. director of Computer Dept in INTAN at that time told me that they've brought researchers from England and the pics are real....hmm...anyways...
Norman becomes somebody big in Pemuda UMNO (I've forgotten the position) then and u know...i kinda 'dunt like' artists that goes into politics...that's all...ehehe...they are not active as they used to be but they have several groups and singers under their belt...

06-14-2004, 02:33 AM
What? The news about the porn pic is true? I've heard of that one before but i've always thought that some ppl simply placed Edry and Linda's heads on naked bodies..at least that's what the newspaper said, and of coz both Edry and Linda.
Yea..wouldnt they get into trouble since they're muslims? The hukum syariah or something?
vunsin
06-14-2004, 02:51 AM
Yeah... and they'd have to get married to each other right away, wouldn't they? I mean, they make people do that when they "tangkap basah" them right? :?
E-Ping
06-14-2004, 02:58 AM
Uhh....they have to marry to each other?I dont know about that. I just know that they could be charged in court for breaking the law. I think we should ask Shai more on that. I mean, she knows more about the Islam law.
vunsin
06-14-2004, 03:02 AM
Yeah... of course she would, and she should. It's just that, I've heard about the story (not sure if it was even true) about a Chinese guy with a Malay girl. Obviously, that could still end up in kena tangkap basah. So they were. And the guy was "forced" to convert to Islam, obviously, in order to marry the girl.

06-14-2004, 08:07 PM
i dun think that I would like to confirm the story... but of course at that time, KRU brought their own computer expert to confirm that the pics are just fake ones...but we dun even know if the 'experts' were fake or not... but the ones that my uncle have meeting with are the professionals and they say (sarcastically that is) that if the pics are truly fakes, they would love to find the one who forge it because it looks SO real...no overlapping, no big face small bodies and things like that (and if there are such person, they will immediately give him a job in the US), cuz I saw the pic, and unlike fake pic, Linda's head have this shadow on her shoulder or sth like that, and fake pic does not cast shadows...and the background wall have Edry's bachelor green-checkered wallpaper of his room... yet, i dun want 2 confirm it as true cuz even though it looks clear, i didn't see the real thing (u know...the action..hahaha) and if I confirm it it would seem as if I am slandering (that is if it is not the real thing)...ahaha...
Tangkap basah? When one wanted to enforce the 'shariah law' the important thing is one must be there. But in E&L case, they only have pictures and all this sort of stories behind the pictures, so they can't like just go and tangkap them...
About must get married after tangkap basah...that is not shariah law actually. that is quite civil... and that is why we Muslim have problems when dealing with shariah and civil law...cuz acc to Islamic law, the penalty is public canning...not just get married or pay money. When civil and shariah got mixed up, the Non-muslim and Muslim's law got all mixed up too. Actually it is public canning for Muslims with muslim and also muslim with NM, but as they dun want to do pc, they asked them to get married, and if this occured to M with NM, this will become the problem, since of course in Islam also there is 'No force/constraint in Islam' and one cannot force other ppl to be Muslim when they dun want to. It does get a little haywired and most of the time, those who dun wanna marry will be charged...
so my advice to fellow NM...dun get mixed up and have free sex with Muslim if u dun wanna get into big problem...ahahaha....(cuz u'll only have two choice...marry OR pay!!!)... err...i dun think i should be funny about it....hmm...
vunsin
06-14-2004, 11:57 PM
 If they'd rather pay then they should've just looked for a prostitute in the first place. I hope those people who're doing the deed really love each other, so even if they were "forced" to get married, at least they'd be happy about it somehow.
Hey, you've seen the pix? :hmm: Do you still have them?

M.Nasir and Tiara jacquelina kinda hot too right now, for Puteri Gunung Ledang, Malaysia'a most expensive film ever made (where they are the leading actors) are in cinemas right now.

Chinese singers:
Z Chen and Penny Dai......also Vincent Chong Ying Cern or better known as Vince AF1..i'm proud of Vince effort in singing malay songs..n if u guys get noticed of his looks..he's a bit like Jay.. :-)
Malay singers:
I'm a malay girl so i knew lotsa malay artistes...i like Ning Baizura, Misha Omar, VE, RuffEdge, Dayang Nurfaezah n Siti Nurhaliza of course.. :huglove:
Nowadays, Akademi Fantasia 2nd season students bring alot of impact to our music industry so i do hav my own favourites..They r Anding, Edlin and Zahid :bounce:
Reading all of ur comments here...its so disappointing to notice dat ther r some of u who didnt like Siti Nurhaliza or should i say sick of her..mmm...i respect all of ur comments juz like i respect Siti n Jay...At GMA'04 Siti has sang "zheng fu" also a song duet wif Lee Hom(a Teresa Teng song if i'm not mistaken)...but it'll be my dreams come true if Jay who duet wif Siti... :-)
I love both Jay n Siti so much..dat i can't get enough of them..n i notice they both got lots of similarities...its true!!
For ur information, they've born in the same year(1979) n the same month(January) but Siti is a week older than Jay...
Both of them got contract with PEPSI
Both of them didn't like acting, but only recently Jay has acted in Initial-D also Siti who juz agreed to act in a movie wif Kris Dayanti..
Both of them didn't do well in education but they hav proved dat people who only got talent in music also can be rich n successfull..it's their salvation..(studying is my priority)
Both of them loved their parents especially their mother so much..
Both of them known to hav a very good attitude..
Hmmm..so many to type...in short, i love them soooo much...n my dream is to watch Siti n Jay singing together..aaahhh...how ironic is dat??

the only thing diff with Siti and Jay (I mean from musical-wise)is dat, jay compose his own songs (not me saying this aa...my mother said it!!)while Siti only write lyrics and she did it only like one or two out of ten.
Yeah, I think I wrote here once saying that jay and Vince are look-alike, especially the lips...ESPECIALLY when they both dyed their hair... kinda funny cuz, one is truly chinese and one is half 'mat salleh' and yet looked so much alike...

chilli and tomato, or CT girls, are singaporeans! i think they won some stupid talent show hosted by jack neo.
i think guan liang pin guan, that 2 guys, were quite talented. they write songs right? so that must be something.
siti nurhaliza is supposed to be quite a catch in the malay music industry i think. remember how she sang with lee-hom? my aunt absolutely loved her rendition of that teresa deng song, and was surprise she was malay. glad at least there are some talents in malaysia.

Janice, I think you're supposed to talk about Malaysian artists (look at topic title). Anyway, there are quite a lot of good Malaysian artists. I only know of the chinese ones though.
Liang Jingru: her voice is SO good! She sings ballads really well, and now has began to sing faster songs well also (like Yan Wei Die)
Penny Dai: Many of her songs are good. Plus, she wrote ALL of them! I first got to know about her from "Ni Yao De Ai" in MEteor Garden with F4...
i like liang jing ru! her songs are just SO nice and her voice is powerful! z chen is also very impressive! his live performances are perfect! zhang dong liang seems to have great potential too!

Oh... I have one of Ah Niu's album with songs like Mamak Stall and The Old Trishaw Ah Pek.
Liang Jing Ru isn't chubby anymore. Since last year, she's slimmed down a lot. I think she became a spokesperson for a slimming program too.

It supposed to be Michael Wong. I don't know how to describe these guys plus a girl there except for Nick Teo
Nick Teo,recently appeared in TV3 recently
Reshmonu is Indian guy who has long braided hair with pretty gigantic ears. This guy once did a duet with the kru. I ccan't remember, right now he's popular with 'hey waley'(i don't know how to spell it).
Michael Wong~ He doesn't appear too much in tv so i don't really know him-wahaha :brows:

i took back the Nick Teo link pic-hehe..
v Vunsin, probably I'm confused by his family name~

Hmmm, Malaysia artiste? I gotta be honest, I don't like any. I do think that Malaysia is not in a very hard standard.
But after the Malaysian Idol Season 2, I do like the new winner, Daniel Lee.
Does he consider a Malaysia artiste?
karyn531
11-16-2005, 08:23 AM
Yeah, Daniel Lee is definitely considered a M'sian artist by now. After all, he's all set to release his debut album next month which has got 10 chinese songs, 10 malay songs and 10 (no, not indian) english songs. And he had already released a CD with 2 malay songs in it, I think. And the chinese version of Mimpi, one of the songs that he sang in M'sia Idol is out. I hope no one said all this already.
Back to the topic, I like Fish Leong's voice. I just learnt recently that she knows Cantonese as well when I saw an advertisement in Astro where she dueted with a guy (is that her cousin?) Also, I like Tong Hua. A lot. But after listening to it for a while, I got bored (sian) hearing it. And Nick Teo's songs are real nice to hear! But they are kinda... 'predictable'? I hope you get what I mean!

jaychou_21, you love siti nurhaliza? yeah, she's a malaysian, she's like the music icon of malay music. and she's very rich. she is certified as 'young millionaires below the age of 40' by the malaysian government. and there's rumours saying that she has to open a new account at a certain bank cause her money in the bank is too much already. and guess what, her birthday is just a week before jay. i'm not a fan of her but i have a male friend who's fanatic to her....

^ Yeah I love her.
I started to like her when I saw one of her videos on Channel V.
I can barely even remember the title of the song. It's slow and catchy.
I was amazed by her great vocals. She has a powerful, smooth voice.
I took even more notice of her when she won the MTV Asia Award
for Favorite Artist Malaysia for two (or is it three) consecutive years.
But sadly, I can't find any of her albums here in the Philippines.
She's young and rich and it's easy to see why.
She possesses great talent, charm, beauty and grace.
