About us:
On The Run Fansubs was officially born on December 17th with the purpose of making English Subtitles for Jay Chou (周杰倫/Zhou Jie Lun) videos ;)
We released our first short projects on 01.01.2008 which were "Jay Chou in scoop 01.18.06" & "Jay Chou in scoop 02.13.06". We're still working on more project so I'm hoping that more members will join us :-)
What is Fansubbing?:
Fansubbing, or fan subtitling, is the process of taking a video or movie in a foreign language and adding your own subtitles to it so that people who don't know the original language can watch and enjoy the work. The phenomenon of fansubbing is most prevalent in the anime community, since most anime originates in Japan and must be translated before it can be widely shown outside of Japan. However, fansubbing certainly is not limited in scope to anime; it can be employed whenever one wants to make a motion picture work accessible to people unfamiliar with the language.

Difference between Softsubs and Hardsubs
Softsubs are subtitle files that the viewer has a choice whether or not to view it with the video. They are either text or images that are displayed at the same time with and on top of the video. Most recent video players/codec packs come with softsubtitle rendering engines and can display external softsubs, softsubs that come in a file separate from the videos. Other softsubs are included in the video file, but as a separate stream that the viewer can choose to view or not view. These subtitles can be easily separated from the video files and then edited.
Hardsubs are different from softsubs in that they have been edited onto the images of the video. The viewer is given no choice but to see the subtitles (unless they crop the video itself, of course). Because these subtitles are part of the images of the video, they cannot be ripped as easily. That is not to say, however, that hardsubs cannot be ripped.
We'll be making Hardsubs, of course
Fansubbing Jobs:
Raw Provider:
Provides torrents or direct download links of shows etc. which we want to sub
Translators:
are doing English Translations of the show, concert, mv etc.
in Notepad
Timers:
are timing the subtitles. Means, setting the start and ending time when the subtitles should show up by referring to the chinese subs (if available), or time according to the audio
Quality Checkers (QC)
This job will be splitted into two parts =>
QC'er [trans]: Checks the english grammar or parts that hasn't been translated... and has to correct/add them! It would be nice if you're fluent in BOTH english and chinese so that you can catch mistranslations
and
QC'er [time]: Checks if the subtitles are showing up at the right time and if you're able to read the whole sentence in the given time. If not, correct them so the output is readable!!!
Typesetters:
are in charge of styling the subs.. means... setting the position, fonts, size, color etc. and are also responsible for proper line breaks for the subtitles that span over multiple lines. They area also the ones who put in the credits in the videos :P
Encoder:
is the one who is hardsubbing (see explanation above!).
Have to be familiar with avisynth (virtualdubmod, megui or super... depends on
what format we're going to encode!)
Uploader:
is in charge of uploading our finished projects to uploading servers like MegaUpload, MediaFire, SendSpace etc.
Logo Provider:
has to have good PhotoShop skills to make a nice logo (no need for that anymore :brows:) with our Fansubbing Group Name or banners etc. to promote this project!
Who can join us:
ANYBODY can join the team as long as you're interested in fansubbing and frequently online here in the forum to see updates!
You don't have to be familiar with chinese at all to help out! If you don't like technical stuff like encoding and can't help out with either translating or uploading.. I always suggest members to start learning how to time!! It's the easiest thing to learn among fansubbing but definitely takes the longest time to finish
I've posted up guides for every new member to study in our private sub-forum ;)
I want to join, what should I do?:
Reply either in this thread or PM me (JenEm (http://jay-chou.net/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=70886))
I think.. that's it for now.. if you have further questions about this.. feel free to ask :D

If you need raw videos, anything on this thread (http://jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=276568) is free for you to use. Even if it isn't uploaded by me, I'm sure the folks on Stage 6 will be glad to have you use their uploads for fansubbing.

Thanks Sam ^^
This will definitely be of some help for us <3
but... how exactly can we download videos from there? do we need to register?
I've tried downloading a video last time and I got a .divx file with which I've never worked before... mmh... need to try converting it later
thanks again

All you need is to download the DivX player. It's free, and it's actually a good player--it even plays videos with titles in Chinese, which most video programs don't do for me.

I've tried it out with Media Player Classic already.. and it worked... thanks though :D
But question is whom to credit for the RAW Videos??
Or are you okay with... RAW Video taken from http://www.stage6.com/Jay-Chou?

That'll work. I've put just about every Jay-related video on Stage6 on that channel, so anything you use will be on there.

Thanks again Sam <3
Very kind from you... hehe.. but you also got many videos from me uploaded in there.. so... :P
Actually... Sorry to say, but no, I don't think that would work. Crediting http://www.stage6.com/Jay-Chou only would mean wiping all the other credits off.
Example.. Some videos uploaded there were taken by me during the Singapore Concert (No, I'm not sore. really), after which they were uploaded to stage6. Fine, since there were credits.
But now if the raw videos are credited to stage6 alone, only the *uploader* gets the credit, and recognized as the source; while the original creator/ provider of the video disappears. I personally don't think this is really nice, speaking for all the "sources".
Yup. Just my 2 cents worth... Either way credits should always go to the original source.

I forgot about that--man, this is difficult! Some of the stuff was originally ripped by me, such as the MVs from "Fantasy Plus," which came from the Japan version of the DVD, but others were originally from this site. The ones from here are credited to here on there, so if that is so, then credit whoever uploaded it here, I suppose. Would that work better for everyone?
I certainly don't want to step on anyone's toes--especially those of the sources, because they do such a good job of sharing videos with everyone. I really appreciate their effort, since I live in a country where these videos are hard to come by. I don't want to steal the credit from them.

Okay... I've should have written it like this... is it okay to credit => "RAW taken from http://www.stage6.com/Jay-Chou" if there are no other credits stated in the video (logo, or whatever) or no credits from the uploader of stage6 (credits to ziai - www.jay-chou.net)
but don't worry ziai, we'll be looking around the forum if the video is uploaded in here and will ask for permission to sub it first! sorry to make you angry
If the RAW videos can't be found here or anywhere else we use the RAWs from stage6 WITH proper credits of course!!!

You better hurry up and download any of the videos you want off of Stage 6. I went on a few minutes ago, and I got this message:
Stage6 to Shut Down on February 28
I’m Tom (aka Spinner), a Stage6 user and an employee of DivX, Inc., the company behind the service. I’m writing this message today to inform you that we plan to shut down Stage6 on February 28, 2008. Upload functionality has already been turned off, and you’ll be able to view and download videos until Thursday.
I know this news will come as a shock and disappointment to many Stage6 users, and I’d like to take a few moments to explain the reasons behind our decision.
We created Stage6 with the mission of empowering content creators and viewers to discover a new kind of video experience. Stage6 began as an experiment, and we always knew there was a chance that it might not succeed.
In many ways, though, the service did succeed, beyond even our own initial expectations. Stage6 became very popular very quickly. We helped gain exposure for some talented filmmakers who brought great videos to the attention of an engaged community. We helped prove that it’s possible to distribute true high definition video on the Internet. And we helped broaden the Internet video experience by offering content that is compatible with DVD players, mobile devices and other products beyond the PC.
So why are we shutting the service down? Well, the short answer is that the continued operation of Stage6 is a very expensive enterprise that requires an enormous amount of attention and resources that we are not in a position to continue to provide. There are a lot of other details involved, but at the end of the day it’s really as simple as that.
Now, why didn’t we think of that before we decided to create Stage6 in the first place, you may ask? That’s a good question. When we first created Stage6, there was a clear need for a service that would offer a true high quality video experience online because other video destinations on the Internet simply weren’t providing that to users. A gap existed, and Stage6 arrived to fill it.
As Stage6 grew quickly and dramatically (accompanied by an explosion of other sites delivering high quality video), it became clear that operating the service as a part of the larger DivX business no longer made sense. We couldn’t continue to run Stage6 and focus on our broader strategy to make it possible for anyone to enjoy high quality video on any device. So, in July of last year we announced that we were kicking off an effort to explore strategic alternatives for Stage6, which is a fancy way of saying we decided we would either have to sell it, spin it out into a private company or shut it down.
I won’t (and can’t, really) go into too much detail on those first two options other than to say that we tried really hard to find a way to keep Stage6 alive, either as its own private entity or by selling it to another company. Ultimately neither of those two scenarios was possible, and we made the hard decision to turn the lights off and cease operation of the service.
So that’s where we are today. After February 28, Stage6 will cease to exist as an online destination. But the larger DivX universe will continue to thrive. Every day new DivX Certified devices arrive on the market making it easy to move video beyond the PC. Products powered by DivX Connected, our new initiative that lets users stream video, photos, music and Internet services from the PC to the TV, are hitting retail outlets. We remain committed to empowering content creators to deliver high quality video to a wide audience, and we’ll continue to offer services that will make it easy to find videos online in the DivX format.
It’s been a wild ride, and none of it would have been possible without the support of our users. Thank you for making Stage6 everything that it was.

thanks for informing us Sam! Really some bad news for you guys on stage6.. I would be very mad after uploading so many videos in there!!!
But we still have plenty of unfinished projects... so I don't think we'll be able to get some videos from there for now... I'm sure that there are plenty of other sources to get Jay's videos

sorry for the late reply... sure you can join us ^^
mmh... sounds like you already have a bit of experience in subbing... so did you time subs in wmm or did you just insert a few sentence? do you have experience with virtualdub/mod or did you use the encoder from wmm?
I'll be waiting for your next reply in here
see ya

No problem, thanks so much for the reply.:wink2:..i did the subbing (if it is called subbing ) by inserting sentences, not really by timing ~ just something i learn using wmm for video projects for my course..
I tried to learn virtualdub but still trying to figure it out, so still have no experience using it..and yeah i use encoder from wmm but i see working with wmm is quite daunting since the program i'm using is (sometime) very2 unstable..hehe  and sometime have to convert the media first in order to be able to work with wmm ~ like i said i was just experimenting , so my works are quite.. :rasp:
hope there's something that i could do to help anyway?

If you're still in need of some members for your fansubs team, I'd be happy to join as a spot translator ^^
I'm not too confident about my Chinese -> English skills, but I'd also like to give translating that a try XD
I've worked with a couple of subteams in the past (I'm only active in one now >_<;;)..so I can encode or edit/QC or time or whatever XD [just no typesetting X_X] Also, I can PM you the subteams that I have worked with if you require the information :]]

Hello JenEn.
I'd like to join the team too if you're still recriuting.
My English's so so, and I'm just a beginner for studying Chinese.
I can time and I've some experience working with a subbing team on some dramas. I also used to encode videos by Virtualdub for my home videos and will be grad to learn typesetting if someone can teach me when you probably need one. Typesetting sounds fun but actually I've known how to do it -_-;.
So..anything I can do, please tell me (except translation coz it's out of my reach ^^).

have you read my "FAQ & Guides" thread in our OTR section?
there are just 2 programs we use for timing... you can choose yourself which is easier to use for you... I recommend Aegisub, though... timings are much more accurate with this program ;)

Hi
Okay, so I only know beginner Mandarin. So I would not be any help with translation. I have also never done any subbing before, so I don't know what programs I would need to do timing/encoding/etc...
But I am a really really fast learner, and good with computers. I also love the work you guys have done with the Jay MV's and concerts.
Let me know if I could be of any help, and if so, what programs I would need to have on my computer.
Thanks,
Sheri
