I am not sure if any one in the forum has gone for his Shanghai concert last evening. Anyway, I'll be penning down my thoughts here of the concert. Whoever has attended the concert and wish to share their thoughts, please feel free to do so here. The concert housed 80,000 people and it was like 95% filled!!! I think this is his biggest turnout venue ever!!! And the whole concert lasted for almost 3 hours.

First, a run-down list of what was sung and my thoughts on each number:

黄金甲/huang jin jia - The starting was indeed very grand. And there was a lot of gusto as he sang it. It just brought everyone into the mood.
无双/wu shuang - Another one of those fast rock numbers that carries on the mood.
最后的战役/zui hou de zhan yi - Was unbelievably surprised as he sang this ... I was kinda not expecting him to sing the old songs. I know someone will be very happy when she reads this. Hhehee.
不能说的秘密/bu neng shuo de mi mi - This is the part where he said he'd take excerpts out of the movie. And shortly after, there was an orchestra, yes, AN ORCHESTRA!!! playing some classical tracks from the movie OST.
退后/tui hou - His voice was just in such top form for this song.
黑色幽默/hei se you mo - That's when he started playing the piano. Another one of the older songs being sung. And everyone started screaming as he sang this song.
最长的电影/zui chang de dian ying - He said tt this is one of his more favourite song in his latest album and that he had recently filmed the MV. So, we should be able to see it soon!
安静/an jing - Everyone got so excited when he sang this song and as he played it on the piano, it just reminded me of the good ol' Jay.
白色风车/bai se feng che - My all-time favourite!!!!!!! And he sang it!!!!!!!!
麦芽糖/mai ya tang - This is when he moved to the right side of the stage and it was such a cute song. He had a scottish dance before that (by his dancers, not him) and that led into this song.
牛仔很忙/niu zai hen mang - He mixed a bit of Oh Susanna in between and sang it with '不用麻烦了/bu yong ma fan le'. I thought it was really funny.
听妈妈的话/ting ma ma de hua - This song got really funny when somewhere in the middle, he had Chow Yuen Fatt doing some silly acts and Jacky Cheung singing a chorus in a video clip. I hope they'll show it in the other concerts too. It was just hilarious!
夜的第七章/ye de di qi zhang - Lara was guest starring most of the time as she was singing out the female part.
夜曲/ye qu - He did a sexy dance with some of the dancers that got all of us soooooo jealous!!!
夜上海/ye shanghai - Becoz' he was in SH, he did this number, very sexy indeed. Loved his vocals in here, it was simply great!
迷迭香/mi die xiang - Did a rumba dance somewhere in between
本草纲目/ben cao gang mu - He danced really well here plus he did a 扯铃/che ling while dancing. To me, this felt like the best part of the night coz' it was ultra cool.
千里之外/qian li zhi wai - He sang it alone and not with his usual vocals. I didn't quite like it.
菊花台/ju hua tai - Everyone loved this song and sang it together.
彩虹/cai hong - He came out with his guitar and purple hair!!! I loved this look.
淘汰/tao tai - Before he sang the song, he talked abt how he wrote the lyrics for this song and liked it a lot and liked eason's songs, and then he went on saying that he wasn't sure if he could do a better one than Eason and he did!!!
开不了口/kai bu liao kou - Again, one of the older numbers that just got us so mesmerized.
甜甜的/tian tian de - This is the part I totally hated. :ranting: It was the final song of the concert before the encores and I just wanted to feel good about it but Jay actually encouraged the audience to THROW their neonsticks!!!!!!!!! I was so busy dodging the neonsticks that I couldn't really concentrate. And you know, it's 80,000 people!!! Can you imagine how long the throwing continued for? And I was so worried as they were all aiming for Jay!!!! What if he got hurt???!!! But he was just singing as though nothing happened.

Encore:

阳光宅男/yang guang zhai nan - He played the drums before this ... with the neon sticks that was being thrown to the stage (no surprise, huh?) Was surprised tt this was his encore, but loved the computer animation, shud watch out for it!
发如雪/fa ru xue - Heplayed the gu zhen in the beginning. It was amazing!!!
霍元甲/huo yuan jia - The crowd loved it as the encore, brought the mood real high
双节棍/shuang jie gun - The final final song that really brought everyone to a high mood!

Okay ... and now for my thoughts on this concert. The overall impression I got from this concert, only 2 words can sum it up very well, and it's also these 2 words that Jay likes to use, 华丽. Before the curtains were drawn, before the stage could open up itself, it looked really bare and all. But when the concert started ... that's when my jaw really dropped. I now understand why he made a loss for the Taipei concert. Coz' there was just too many props and it felt like he kept changing sets for the different songs.

And there were 3 grand pianos being used!!! One of them was a transparent one.

http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=transparentpianokm8.jpg

This time round, there didn't feel like there were more costume changes than the last concert but somehow, this time's costumes felt more acceptable other than the 'feelers' for the opening and his hairdo! I didn't understand why he chose to comb up his fringe throughout. It made his eyes look even smaller and looked more tired. Plus he used quite a fair bit of eyeliner, I felt. But then again, this is what artistes do during concerts, I suppose? They tend to have heavier make-up. We were so high that we were not just standing on the chairs but on the arms of the chairs!!! I really felt like kicking myself for not wanting to pay a little bit more for getting better seats in front. Half the time, I was being blocked by heads (yes, even though I was standing on the arm rests of the chairs!). I had to look at the screen most of the time. :depresse:

He also kinda seperated his stage by 3. So in a way, those at the sides still get to see quite a fair bit of him. The audiences in the side stages were really spontaneous. It was just very cool. I was say quite a good number of his peformances were performed on the right side of the stage (us facing the stage, that is). Guest stars for the evening's performance were kept simple with NQMM and Will Liu. And that was good enough, I felt. I didn't really want too many guest stars coz that would have meant lesser of Jay. :shifty: I guess this concert really was a feel good one for me coz' I didn't carry a lot of expectations. Previously, as I watched the video clips of the Taipei concert, I was so disappointed with his vocals. But last nite's, I would say that it was EXCELLENT AND TOTALLY ON TOP FORM!!! And that is why I have confidence that it will only get better with the later concerts.

There were a few glitches here and there with the sound system but that's really really really rare. He did a dance item in between with Yu Hao which was uber cool and he was rapping. His rap felt a little like MC Hotdog's rap though. Oh and yeah ... I must add why I felt high for the concert too ... it was coz' this is about the only concert I've attended so far that I know every single song!!! Hhahaha, and plus there was this fanboy behind me who was singing his every single song too ... from his rock numbers, to his raps to his ballads. So we all sang along, it was fun!

I am pretty conservative when I watch his costumes, so the whole night, I just liked 2 of them. One was when he was with his purple fringe

http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=purplehairwr6.jpg

and the other was when he was in his gold suit during the encore, he looked so suave in gold! Too bad I cannot find images of his gold suit just as yet.

As with every concert, there is the good and bad side of it. Here are some of the not-so-good parts which I felt. I think Jay didn't really do that well as he was singing and dancing at the same time.

Perhaps coz' he chose to use the handheld mic as he was dancing. So most of the time, his vocals sorta quivered plus he was also trying to catch his breath. The breaks in between felt pretty abrupt sometimes. Like after the rock numbers, it slows down to ballads, which can be rather awkward. And usual, very Jay style, he tries to keep audience interaction to the minimal but that, we don't mind. Just wanna hear him sing actually.

Will Liu was actually lip-synching for his dance number. It kinda felt embarrassing actually ... coz' it was way too obvious. And in the words of some fans for the Taipei concert. There were just too many encores behind that it didn't feel like a REAL encore anymore. I mean, Jay even could go change a few costumes and come back for an ENCORE. That's not really living in the true spirit of encores, I feel.

Despite all these being said, I felt that these down sides were really forgiveable. Coz' the whole concert was just way too good for me. He's truly made all our money worth. And not forgetting the audience presence of 80,000!! The turnout was even better than Mayday's! That's the power of Jay.
It's not just a crowd of a certain generation. But it's with different age groups and across all races. I've seen quite a number of westerners at last night's concert. I would also like to think that Jay's confidence level has also helped make last night's concert such a huge success. I saw no signs of nervousness in him at all ... despite the crowd. It was simply amazing.

Overall, I'd give this concert a 9/10. Yes ... I am usually rather critical but this concert just left me gaping away ... So for those of you who haven't bought your tickets ... what are you waiting for? Go get them now ... and remember ... get the better seats or you'll really regret!

And here's an image where was dancing with the che ling.

Hello Cacky!!

Thanks sooooo much for the review!
It sounds soooo fantastic!
I'm already counting down the days to the HongKong concert!

Furthermore, there are a number of songs from the 1st few albums..
Unlike from the reviews of fans who went to the Taipei concert..
Im soooo excited that he sang 白色风车 too!!
But like what you expressed.. I'm also rather shocked that he didnt sing 我不配

I heard Eason will be the guest star for the HongKong concert.. =)
So maybe he'll have a duet with eason? hee..
Cant wait!

serene_sg: Ooooooh, I'm so envious that you get to go for the HK concert. And if Eason's gonna be the guest star ... it's gonna be sooooo nice. Yeah, he really was on top form last night and I have never been so impressed. I was skeptical initially but after last night's concert. My love for him came back again ... his ego may have caused him to shift focus to the film industry but it's also that same ego that drove him to excel in last night's concert. It was just great.

My hubby was all so impressed with his multi-talents in drums, gu zhen, che ling, guitar and of coz' his piano skills.

jay_fantasy8: Yeah, I bet the Singapore one will be so much better ... since he's already been practicing so much in the earlier concerts. You guys prepare to watch a really good show! Even more so on his birthday!!!

Cacky thank you so much for the review!! Haha, I sorta knew you would let us know.

Firstly I'm really very happy that he sang some of his old songs, and that his voice is in a top condition. And that so many people attended!!

I can't wait for his concert in Sg!!!!!! Two nights gosh, I'm going to DIE of happiness.

Btw, won't it be quite dangerous to stand on the arms of the chair? Hmm.. I think I would too though haha!

Thanks for the review again (: *cheers*

Yeah, ... I hope it'll only get better so that it'll be a GREAT experience for you all. Especially for the Singaporean fans who had such a hard time getting the tickets. I really hope it would turn out to be rewarding. And yeah, I suspect the Shanghai concert might be the version for the DVD. There were sooooooooo many cameras!!!

eminemjamesuk: In the Taipei concert, towards the last song (before the encore), did he get the fans to throw their neonsticks forward? Coz' I really didn't expect Jay would get us to do that towards the end. It was such a dangerous act!!! Yet I am not sure if he requested for that coz' he was feeling really 'high' already as it was the finale.

^ HHahhaha, that long post was well worth it. I just needed to express how I felt about the concert. I really hope that you guys will enjoy it as much as I did. Like I mentioned in my earlier posts, it should only get better ... with all thar practice and feedback. Yeah, the HK's concert is really soon and it's gonna be held over 7 days??? If I were you, I'd buy up all 7 days and watch Jay every single day of the week.

Hahhaha. You know ... speaking about the fanboy, he was just close to tears towards the ending of the concert. I think he was totally immersed in the show!

Thanks for that great review, cacky!

And that song list!!! AHHHH he actually sang the older songs!!!
I'm soooo gonna scream if he sings it in SG because I thought he'll be focusing on his newer albums (namely November Chopin, Still Fantasy and On the Run).

Gives me something to look forward to... and tempted to buy tickets for the 19th Jan show even though I kinda sworn not to buy from the black market.

One thing I don't get though - what's with the throwing of light sticks?

Also when he played drum and chinese old music tools.

ankh: Yeah ... I was taken by surprise when he sang the older songs coz' he hardly sang any of the older ones in Taipei. Yeah, I don't get the throwing of the neonsticks either. But I'd like to think that he was feeling really high towards the end. He was singing tian tian de and then he changed some of the lyrics to something like "把你们的荧光棒丢上来". I was HORRIFIED when I heard that. I mean, it's really painful to get hit by them. Did he consider his fans at all???

endro_jay: The Shanghai song he sang was called Ye Shang Hai. Yeah, and I thought he sounded really cool when he changed his vocals towards the end.

Thanks for the review, Cacky. :flowers:

Ah, he didnt sing Qing Hua Ci.

But, it seems that he sang quite a number of old songs like Hei Se You Mo and Kai Bu Liao Kou which was good.

I laughed so hard at that part that you said you was too busy dodging the neonsticks. I saw that piece of news in the newspaper yesterday and I thought it was the fans who were being excited and all throwing the neonsticks towards Jay.

Anyway, I can't wait to fly over to HK next week for his concert! yay!

Thanks, cacky. Glad that you enjoyed yourself very much. :-)

And he did Bai Se Yu Mao?! My favourite song! If he didn't sing Qing Hua Ci I hope he did sing of the older songs in SG. =p

11-27-2007, 09:48 AM
deejay0103: Yeah ... the fans didn't throw initially until Jay asked them to throw it forward!!! What a thing to do! Which article did you read that wrote about that? Can you share with me? I'd like to read about it too.

hisashi: Bai Se Yu Mao? Did you actually mean Bai Se Feng Che or Hei Se You Mo? Hhahaha, he did sing both songs though.

Oops, I read it wrongly. =p Anyways, he did Black Humor?! One of my favourite songs too! :excited:

Thanks Cacky. Your review has got me so excited that now I am not going to get much sleep until his L.A. concert on Dec 24! Yes i am flying 5 hours from Toronto to see him in L.A. Now that I have this huge expectation, I hope they will bring everything from Asia and make a hell of a show!

Thanks for such a detailed review! I feel so excited for the LA concert now. Since this tracklist is similiar to the Hong Kong one, I will be brushing up on these songs so I can sing along! I am surprised that he didn't perform Qing Hua Ci which I would really like to see. The transparent grand piano sounds amazing.

^ Hhehehe, no worries dear, that one day will come true for you! I'm sure. I've also always wanted to experience such big turnout and outdoor events.

Coz' most of Singapore's concerts are held in the indoor stadium. So there's limited stuff you can actually have in the concert. But the flip side about having concerts in such a big space is that more often than not, the stage gets really huge and you can't get that close-up to the artiste.

Jay felt like an ant on the stage. And more often than not, I had to look at the screen.

Wow, what a detail write up about Shanghai Concert! Thanks. :D

Can't wait for his Singapore Concert as well as Malaysia one. Though my friends have not decided whether to go or not to go cause we have spent quite a bit for his Singapore Concert.
