There's more than meets the eye.
One of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Yet also one that garnered quite a few bad critics. So how well did Transformers really fare? Here's my take on the mega-blockbuster.
And by the way, I'm coming from a neutral stand point because I did not really watch the cartoons, so I can't be a fan of the original Transformers. (Well, it really wasn't my generation.) To be truthful I went to watch this for Shia. Who knew, Bumblebee stole my heart instead. (: Nevermind that he's a robot. A real romantic one at that too.
Of the blockbusters that premiered this year, including Spider-man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Ocean's 13, Transformers gets one of my highest votes. Of course it can't be compared to Ocean's 13, that's a super clever show that requires lots of brain work. Transformers scores high in its own league. Brainless action, hot guys, cute girls. This is one blockbuster not to be missed.
Plus, who won't want to see Optimus Prime? And Megatron?
Alrighty, first up: Acting. No need to doubt. Shia LaBeouf's acting skills are already so good we don't need to know how much he improved. Megan Fox finally gets a lot more screen time in Transformers as Mikaela, nothing outstanding but this should get her more movies. Josh Duhamel is charming in his role of a soldier, and in this show he's more of a fatherly figure and very in-command. A nice change from his heart-throb roles. Shows that he CAN act. Then there's Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee and the rest of the robots. Um, yeah they can act.
Shia really held his own in the movie. Two thumbs up for Hollywood's up-and-coming star! (:
Soundtrack. Theme song is Linkin Park's What I've Done. And the songs coming from BUmblebee's radio, those oldies, are fantastic.
The effects are brilliant, as expected. The sound? I'd suggest watch it in digital format. I watched the normal version in a normal theatre, then went to watch it in digital format the next day. And the outcome? The digital format is WOW. The sound totally rocks your seat and you can really feel each blast. It's really more exciting to watch in digital.
Cinematographic is fine. The long shots of the Decepticons destroying things are quite amazing. But one particular shot in slow-motion was quite redundant.
Optimus Prime is an 18-wheeler and the Autobots are all pretty cars. Bumblebee's a Camaro, Jazz is a Pontiac. The Decepticons are all machines, armed with heavy artillery. Personally I felt that Megatron wasn't that intimidating. The movie didn't exactly show his evilness very well. And Scorponok was an even more interesting enemy.
Plot.
Brainless action, like I said.
But the movie is filled with humor, slapstick and witty. (: There's a fair mix. Quite a lot of sexual innuendoes as well. Hmm. My favorite one? Shia aka Sam 'Spike' Witwicky saying, "I'd like to ride you home... I mean, give you a ride home." Cute. And even Optimus is hilarious. He just deadpanned, "Oops" when he accidentally stepped on Mrs Witwicky's flowers. Ironhide wanted to kill their dog for 'lubricating' his foot, but we call that peeing on his foot. Then of course there's Bumblebee's oldies that will so bring a smile to your face.
And finally, an 'Earth is going to die' movie that does not just focus on America. Every other movie that says the world is being destroyed usually only shows one part of America dying. -.- but Transformers manages to take the rest of the world into account. For example, the reason why it's set in the States is because of Captain Witwicky. But they also link to the whole world by saying that the Decepticons caused major blackouts throughout the whole world. Well, at least it shows that the States ain't the only country on Earth.
Some parts of the movie are quite ridiculous. Like, why would HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS be called to assist in a highly classified case in the Pentagon? Strange.
But well. Do stay for a bit of the credits, Mrs Witwicky says some really great stuff. About the US government. Cool.
I'm not going to do some in-depth review. Just a short one. So I'll finish up here. This movie is quite a good watch. I'd give it a higher rating than Pirates3 & Spidey3.
Eye candies for the girls, eye candies for the guys. And fantastic cars and robots. Everyone should watch it, because this movie has successfully incorporated enough elements to appeal to the masses. Just, erm, don't steal Bumblebee away from me, okay? (:
No sacrifice, no victory.
