Let me ask you all a question. What is it that you like about the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies?
As I walked into the cinema to watch this movie, I couldn't help but try to remember what exactly it is that I like about the 'Pirates' movies. Halfway through the final installment in the trilogy, I was still trying to remember.
Let me bring you all back to my initial question. What is it that you like about these movies? Is it the story? the visual effects? the music? the acting? Johnny Depp? I must be honest. When I walked into the cinema to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End I did not have any high hopes. I was not expecting to be blown away by this movie nor was I expecting it to be dreadful. My expectations were fulfilled.
Cast:
POTC: ATW features what you might say is a fairly well known cast. You've got Orlando Bloom (Will Turner), Keira Knightly (Elizabeth Swann), Geoffrey Rush (Captain Barbossa) and Chow Yun Fat (Captain Sao Feng) to name a few. All good actors but where would the Pirates movies be without Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). The answer is, nowhere. Depp plays the part of Captain Sprarrow exceptionally well and the more memorable moments of the movie certainly have him in them.

Story / Plot:
POTC: ATW takes place after the second movie Dead Man's Chest. Captain Sparrow (Depp) has been taken away by the kraken and is trapped within Davy Jone's Locker. Rescue mission! Will Turner (Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Knightly), with the assistance of Barbossa (Rush) set out to free Sparrow. They're travels take them to Singapore (yay!) where they attempt to enlist the help of a pirate lord by the name of Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). They must free Sparrow to unite the Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court.
Now while all this is happening, the common enemy of the pirates is a man by the name of Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) and the East India Trading Company. They have launched an all out offensive against the ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman and its crew captained by Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). This results in the surrender of Jones thus granting Beckett control over the Dutchman and its invulnerable crew to destroy all the remaining pirates in the world.
Sounds complicated? It was for me. I spent the first half of the movie trying to remember what happened in the 2nd movie and i spent the 2nd half of this movie trying to figure out what in the world was going on!
Acting:
The acting was good. I'll give it that. Although at times it was some what corny. I find it hard to see how a romantic scene can be squeezed in between cannon balls and sword fights on a leaky boat filled with sweaty pirates. But director Gore Verbinski managed it somehow. Lots of corn....
Although I found the acting to be good (Depp was outstanding), there was one role I felt could have been better. Captain Sao Feng played by well known (and loved) Hong Kong actor, Chow Yun-Fat did not really add any depth or atmosphere to this movie. I am a great fan of his work but unfortunately I felt that in this movie, his lack of english fluency proved detrimental. His acting was great don't get me wrong, but I found myself having to concentrate hard to try and grab the dialogue from his character. Disappointing. Also there was no Crouching Tiger
There was however good use of humour mixed into all the action in the film. Depp still plays the role of Captain Jack Sparrow exceptionally well albeit not as drunkardly as in the previous movies.
Cinematography / Digital Effects:
This is where the movie shines. The special effects are awesome! Have you ever seen pirates in snow? You will. You'll see ice bergs and snow and one scene where a pirate vessel sails between two huge ice bergs into darkness is breathtaking. Not to mention the giant waterfall, maelstrom and Davy Jone's seafood crew.
The swashbuckling scenes were... OK. I didn't see anything super outstanding here. And I have one major gripe about the final encounter between the pirate forces and the East India Trading Co forces. Imagine Braveheart, but with boats. Thats right, heaps and heaps of boats. I was all geared up for the final battle. Heaps of cannon balls flying, boats destroyed left right and centre. Instead what did I get? A one on one fight between the Dutchman and the Pearl...... sad
Conclusion:
As I mentioned before, I didn't have high expectations for this movie. I paid no attention to the hype machine and probably for the better. As far as the plot was concerned, I found it all over the place. Perhaps if I had watched the previous movies again to refresh my mind, it may not have been so confusing.
The acting and the visual effects were good and solid. You'll get your fair share of laughs from this movie too
If you watch this movie to see Johnny Depp, to see pirates in action and because you like sea adventures with heavy use of special effects (sit through the trailers and you'll see a book list of visual programmers etc) then you'll probably enjoy this movie. If you have high expecations, you might be a little disappointed but all in all its a fairly decent movie.
