So a new C&C is finally here. And its been awhile. To be honest i can't even remember when i last played a C&C game, but the original C&C is what you could call a CLASSIC. Mind you this was back in the day before pentiums and geforce watchimacallits. We played C&C on 486's with a 2 button mouse and VGA graphics. It was awesome >.<
Since the original C&C debuted, there have been various spin offs as well as a sequel. There have been C&C: Red Alert, C&C: Generals, C&C: Renegade, C&C2 and various other sequels.Of the sequels, probably only Red Alert and Generals deserve mention as good RTS games. The others well.... kind of sucked.
Nowadays, there is a bevy of RTS games. You've got your Warcrafts, Your Starcrafts (new one's coming!), Age of Empires, Dawn of Wars and many more. To be honest i didn't think i'd see another C&C but i was wrong. So does the latest installment live up to the hype? is it a good game? The short answer is.... yes.
Gameplay:
If you've ever played a C&C game before, then it won't take you long to get used to the gameplay mechanics of this game. Its essentially the same control set up as the previous C&C games. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there really isn't any innovation here.
You basically mass build your units, use your harvesters to umm.. harvest tiberium for money and go out and kick enemy butt! There are a decent number of units for each army but unfortunately once you unlock the higher tier units like the mammoth tank, you won't really need your lower tier units any more. And thats a shame.
The variety of levels is also lacking. Majority of levels require you to destroy enemy bases / installations but there are a few stealth style missions with limited units that added some variety to the game.
Plot / Characters:
The plot is fairly simple and takes place after C&C. The Earth is dying. Tiberium is spreading all over the planet and making it uninhabitable. The GDI are trying to find a way to reverse the effects of tiberium now that the forces of NOD appear defeated and their leader Kane, presumed dead.
Its never good to presume. Kane lives! and Nod are scheming again. They plan to spread the Earth with Tiberium and overthrow GDI to control the planet. Seems simple enough but there's a catch. They've attracted the attention of some aliens. The Scrin. Yes C&C3 has a new race! but i'll not spoil it for anyone by telling you what part they play in the game =)
FMV hasn't been used in games of late, but C&C3 has stayed true to its roots by sticking to the FMV style of storytelling.
The characters in the game are portrayed by some well known actors. Grace Park & Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Michael Ironside (Starship Troopers), Josh Holloway (LOST) and Jennifer Morrison (House) just to name a few.

Visuals:
The first thing you'll immediately notice about this game is the visuals. Assuming you have the hardware to run it on full graphics, this game is a stunner. The particle effects, the explosions and the Tiberium itself all look STUNNING. I have to say its the most gorgeous looking RTS game to date.

Sound:
Nothing much out of the ordinary here. Your standard sound effects - gunfire, explosions, vehicular noises etc will be ever constant whilst you play. The musical score adds a nice touch to the action and the characters dialogs are entertaining.
Replayability:
There's a decent number of mulitplayer maps to go thru online and in skirmish mode as well. Set the difficulty higher to get a real challenge from the multiplayer AI!
Overall:
I'd say its a good game. Not great. But good. C&C 3 has stuck to its tried and trusted formula of RTS gameplay in its latest installment. This isn't bad, but there could have been more innovation here. The mission variety is limited and some lower tier units become redundant once the bigger stronger and more badass units become available.
The visuals are a stunner and the acting is good.
If you like RTS games and you like C&C, you've already got this game. If you've never played a C&C or RTS game before, then this is a nice game to start with. Its got plenty of eye candy and isn't too difficult or complicated to get into.
