This thread, Japanese General Thread is created to bear all of the discussions, questions that you have about the Japanese language.
This is intended to not be confused with the official Japanese Lesson Thread (http://jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=25916), any questions you have about the lessons that are being taught, please ask it there. Otherwise, it will just be a heap of confusion.

or if you just want to simply discuss about the language, do so ne~ maybe you'll learn something new

Please remember to follow the Guidelines for the Trial Language Forum (http://jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=25912)~

Hi, fznaxez... The alphabets you are talking about is romanji, I assumed?
In fact, Cats has posted quite a comprehensive first post, including the two charts that's in it. That is basically the basics of Japanese language. I would suggest you to get yourself familiarised with it first.

can we discuss about feminism in kanji?
i mean, there might be some kanji that only can't be used for woman, but man can use all kanji.
isnt it call feminism?

like 結婚 (kekkon = marriage)
which can be used by any gender.

is there 男's kanji, that cant be used by women?
i havent found any yet, but if there were some, i would really want to know it.

thanks in advance

i have a question!

how do you know which suffix you're supposed to use when addressing someone? so far i've heard -chan, -kun, and -san. i was watching a japanese show that was talking about something like this, but it was subbed in chinese so i only half understood what they were talking about. i was able to understand enough to know that the suffixes are either based on age or are based on how well you know the person....am i right? are there any other suffixes? (i've heard sensei and senpai so far)

also, -kun= jun 君, -san= sheng 生, so is there a chinese equivalent for -chan? would it be like zai 仔?

hehe, i'm just curious. :-)

yup you are right. we use it base on how close our relationship.
chan is for girl. you also can use it for boy. just in case you are close with them.
kun is only for boy.
chan and kun usually for children. but if you are 20s you still can use it. (if you are close)

san is for everyone. you can use it to call people whom not that close to you. it's a formal one.

we still have SAMA> It's usually used for someone from higher position. like president, prime minister. but as i ever told, japanese rarely use it nowadays.

sensei = teacher. (but you also can use it to call a doctor)
senpai = your senior. (in school or even in office)
senpai >< Kouhai
