Do you understand mandarin, or do you listen to Jay Chou anyway even though you have no idea what he is saying?
I'm currently studying chinese, so I know a few words, but listening to Jay Chou songs is a really great way to improve my chinese and learn new words!

Hi Alvinz, welcome to the forums
for me, I don't understand chinese when I first listened to Jay's songs but after that I study chinese so.. ^^; but I don't agree to learn chinese by his songs lol I hardly catch what he is singing, you know what I mean.

Welcome to JCnet!
Well... I would say I understand Mandarin but initially I have trouble understanding Jay when he sings, unless I have the lyrics with me. Even now, I still have trouble with Jay's songs when he's rapping. haha..

Now diaoness dearie,I don't know if that's just what you guys call it at your country. But just to let you know, the derogatory word "chink" to many asian people is just as offensive as saying the "N" word towards black people.
So I just like to ask nicely, please don't make a habit of using that word.I heard it enough growing up as well as "ching chong" & Bruce Lee impressions by ignorant racists in my community.Thank you!^^
Welcome to JCNet Alvinz,it's really nice to have you with us.You came just in time because we're actually discussing about a new section in the forums just for learning & teaching new languages.

Have fun & don't hesitate to ask any questions or explore!^^:bleh:

I can understand a little of mandarin. Yeah, listening to Jay's songs really helped a lot. I can speak better now. Last time I only listened to the melody but now, I can already understand the lyrics. The translation in this site really helps. I mean, wow, finally I can understand the message that Jay wants to convey in his songs and realized what a romantic soul Jay is. I love him more and more each day.

I know mandarin well enough. However, sometimes his lyrics are just so refined and complicated that I just listen to them for the sake of the song.

as fo now, im still unable to read or write. but at least im glad that now im able to understand and speak mandarin a little bit. it takes time. gotta improve more.

i understand snippets of mandarin. i was in chinese school for about 9 years, but i barely learned anything. what a waste of money, lol.
i honestly listen to jay's songs without looking at the translations or having any clue what he's saying. i like the beat! haha. i might catch a phrase here or there, like "wo ai ni." rofl. i suck at mandarin.
if you speak really really slowly in mandarin, i'll probably understand. XD
anyways, welcome to JCnet! hope you like it! ^^

I understand Mandarin conversation, just not anything like politics or economics because I dont know the higher level terms =P
If you really want to improve your Chinese, just go to China/Taiwan.. I find watching drama or listening to songs not really helpful unless you actually study the lyrics o.0

Hehe, I don't think anyone understands what Jay is rapping about without having to look at his lyrics. ^^;; I can understand simplified Mandarin but not indepth things like "chen Yu" and such, but bascially I can have quite a good conversation in Mandarin even though my pitch is off sometime. I can't read or write though. ^^;;

Haha, I'm Chinese so I learned Mandarin at the same time as English. Basically, yeah I'm fluent. At the same time, when Jay raps I, and many other fluent speakers I know have trouble understanding him, though ballads are much MUCH easier. He still has a tendency to slur a bit so sometimes it's not very clear, though it is very distinctive.
i'm chinese so i can understand mandarin very well.
but u know, some of the lyrics of jay's songs are like poems so it's hard to translate them into english.
so if u ever have any problem of understanding the lyrics or learning chinese i would like to help but i'm not sure i can solve the problem.

i understand mandarin. in fact, i'm forced to study mandarin everyday! and yes, i guess i do understand a bit of what Jay is singing but that is no solid reason as to me liking mandarin. to be honest, i really dislike the subject. but for the sake of understanding what Jay sings, i guess it's only right to perservere, doncha think? :D

Hehehe - I don't speak Chinese - Mandarin or Cantonese. Though my coworkers nickname for me is Jiaozi….
Anyway, Jay writes such amazing melodies, and has a voice that I just love to listen to. I can sing along with his ballads, and just enjoy his faster stuff.
I also have Thai, Japanese, Spanish, French, Swedish & German artists that I like. I’m slowly learning a phrase here & there. I’m better with French than any of the others. ;)

i used to not really understand mandarin, but now i can say i'm about completely fluent in mandarin. chinese school did nothing for me, it was chinese stuff like huan zhu ge ge, azn dramas, jay chou, etc. that gave me the spark and made me interested. once u have the spark and ambition, ur halfway there. it was pretty cool learning/improving just by watching dramas for entertainment. :)
When I first started listening to Jay's songs I couldn't understand them at all...(it doesn't help that the first song I heard was Fa Ru Xue, which happens to be insanely complicated Chinese lol), but spending time listening to Jay's songs and talking with my girlfriend have improved my Chinese a lot. I used to be perfectly fluent when I was younger but really grew out of the habit living in Canada, leading to not really speaking it for over 10 years...

yes, b4 i know Jay, i don't understand mandarin
but after that, i know a little bit...i learn it from my chinese friends and through Jay's lyrics...it quite work. Anyway, i have plan to take a mandarin class next year.
To me, it's not a big deal either i understand or not when i listening to any song...as long as the melody is nice, that's enough. But to be honest, mandarin song really can attract me more. Especially song that compose by jay :)

I understand mandarin. It was my first language until I started public schools and then English pretty much took over. I can still speak, albeit somewhat haltingly, but I can understand conversational mandarin because my parents spoke it at home. I do have a hard time understanding mandarin lyrics in music because there is a lot of slang and I'm just not used to listening to it that much.
All that said, I love Jay Chou's music, and am eagerly awaiting his new album, even if I can't understand the lyrics without help.

I'm studying mandarin since Jan 2002, so I can speak mandarin a little now :) It's getting harder now to learn mandarin cause the letter is getting more complicated, and it's hard to memorize all the letters, but I'm still hanging on :). The first time I heard Jay's song, I didn't know the meaning, but when I study mandarin, I get to understand it little by little and then compare it to the translation. Pretty interesting.....

I understand some, so far I've learned the basics, and I've started learning Mandarin a few years ago. I've continued learning by listening to audio tapes and reading Mandarin phrase books. A Jay Chou lyrics site has Mandarin and English translation for his song lyrics and I've been learning from that too.

I understand mandarin, well most of it anyways, some of jay's lyrics are a bit hard to understand, not least due to the speed and clarity of it.
I do pity those who like the music but don't understand Jay's lyrics, it's like I hate the fact that I like a lot of opera songs, but don't have a clue what they are talking about.

11-11-2007, 10:36 PM
I know Chinese enough to have few problems when reading and speaking. writing is another matter...
Jay songs are usually hard to understand, it's almost as though he uses his vocals as another instrument. but you sorta get used to it.
Must disagree with FreddyC though, I love listening to foreign music, even though i may not understand a word of the lyrics, the music and the feel of the songs are enough to move me. I remember bawling my eyes out after watching a clip of a Japanese band in concert. (If anyone wants to know, it was Arashi's Tabidachi no Asa @ Yokohama Arena, from AAA DVD released earlier this year.)

I am actually cantonese but I learned mandarin when I was little at a chinese school. I haven't spoke much since then until i started working at a chinese place. For an ABC, i can actually speak and read more than most other ABC i know. though, they might sound more fluent.
i started to listen to jay chou because i was always into canto stuff so i didnt mind switching off a bit. i still don't understand most of the stuff he is singing about. but it doesnt really matter cause i can barely understand stuff sang in english anyways. haha.

Even though Mandarin was my first language, I'm not fluent and I can understand people when they talk more than write Chinese or speak it. I did attend a couple of Chinese summer camps in California (U.S.A.) and in China. I really love the beat, rhythims, and lyrics of Jay Chou's music, and even though I do have to look up the translations for his lyrics, I can pick up certain phrases or words as I listen. I want to become really fluent in Mandarin so I can fully enjoy his music someday! Both of my parents know Mandarin, and I only wish they hadn't stopped teaching me it. =( Since the town I live in has less than 1% of Chinese, it was really hard to practice it. My baby sitters couldn't understand me, so my parents decided to teach me english.

I'm a abc, so i grew up learning english, but had some chinese 'intuition' in the back of my head, so i wasn't entirely clueless when my relatives talked in chinese. Jay Chou's songs use a lot of...well not everyday words, and that makes it hard to understand. You have to be really fluent in chinese to completely understand Jay's songs.

Unfortunately, i might need to work on my singing voice first, since people tend not to let me sing XD

I don't understand that much Mandarin
but I do understand Cantonese and
that helps a little bit
I still have to watch dramas with subtitles
because I can't seem to catch all the words
hmmm sometimes it's difficult to understand
all the words in Jay Chou songs because
he either sings it pretty fast
or it jumbles together hehe

Do you understand mandarin, or do you listen to Jay Chou anyway even though you have no idea what he is saying?
I'm currently studying chinese, so I know a few words, but listening to Jay Chou songs is a really great way to improve my chinese and learn new words!
Yah, Me too. I'm currently learning Chinese. Jay Chou is the only reason I wanted to learn Chinese. :-)

I can understand mandarin sometimes...like if people speak slow enough!^^ But when I listen to Jay Chou...I don't understand him most of the time. I catch a few words and/or sentences here or there, but that's it! His songs are so good & I love his voice so much that it doesn't really matter to me^^

I understand Mandarin. My parents talk to me in Mandarin and I watch the news, dramas, etc . I've taken classes for a while, but I somewhat forgot the difficult characters. I can speak and listen, but I'm not strong in writing or reading. I can read and write those simple characters, but the rest is a blur. All that time and effort wasted. I should of kept on going with my classes. When it comes to Jay's singing it's hard. I have to look at the lyric book to follow his singing or this website to see the translation. Hey, at least Jay is motivating me to keep on going and learning with my Mandarin.
I understand a couple of words of mando but planning to learn more asap.

I'm non-Asian, Canadian...so I don't know Mandarin at all. But I want to learn, and have been picking up a few words and phrases from songs. Jay's songs are easy to sing along with because you don't have to worry too much about exact pronunciation..LOL (his beloved mumbling!!)
I am going to enroll in classes to learn Mandarin properly. I love the language, culture and people. My Asian friends tell me I am the wrong colour. I hate racism a lot. Knowing Jay's music, and other artists from Taiwan and Japan have made me more conscious of the existence of racism. What a shame that North Americans (white/black/Asian/other) can't learn to appreciate music, regardless of the language. Every chance I get I promote Jay's music to English speaking people.

Sadly no :( but i can speak/understand cantonese. My parents used to tell when i was younger that Mandarin is a very useful language to know and so they would put on the news in Mandarin so maybe i could pick up a few things.
I used to go to chinese school when i was younger, but quit after a few years. (Something i really regret now) I actually hated going there because everyone there spoke Mandarin which I couldnt understand. I took chinese at my school so now i'm familiar with the basics of Mandarin. Ohhh and watching Taiwanese dramas made me even more familiar with the language.
I really do wish i was fluent in mandarin now especially after i was introduced to Jay Chou's music and Taiwanese dramas.

I would like to learn mandarin just to understand Jay and his songs. I know it sounds crazy but its worth it!

I do understand and speak mandarin, but I listen to songs of different languages that I don't understand either...and I think it's a beautiful thing that there are so many Jay Chou fans who don't speak his language.

Oh oh, yes, i understand mandarin. Jay Chou IS a good way to improve your chinese. But sometimes, he tends to slur his lyrics, so it is sometimes difficult to understand what he is singing.
I speak, write, read and understand simple Mandarin, haha. xP
My dad says that Jay Chou's Mandarin is like a European's, and he can't stand listening to it because it's learned from pinyin, not zhuyin, which means he doesn't have a real Chinese accent, or something. xDD
Harhar, my dad is funny. ;pp

I grew up speaking English and Cantonese. Mandarin was always the back-up language so I don't really speak much Mandarin. However, I would like to learn to speak Mandarin fluently and to be honest, Jay's song have improve my Mandarin these few years.
Although it is not the proper method of learning Mandarin, it is also a good way of learning to speak some Chinese words at the very least. Chinese songs are not easy to sing and if you can sing Jay's song quite well, you would be able to control your vocal range well and perhaps improve your pitching at the same time.
Thus, you don't need to know Mandarin to listen to Chinese songs. The world is connected to each other today and what's holding you back to learn Mandarin when we are all here because of Jay Chou's existence?

I can relate reading your post here. I was born and raise in the philippines to a half-chinese parents. We do speak hokkien though and i went to a mandarin school during my primary years but since my grandparents died and i moved here in the US to work I kind of lost it. Learning songs from Jay helps to relearn the basic ones but I am still trying to find time to go back maybe to a formal school to learn the language again.
And of course how can i forget watching TW drama helps too :-) . Currently watching Fated to Love You and I am glad one of the character there speaks hokkien its refreshing to be able to understand it when she speaks. :wink2:

I am learning Mandarin right now with CD's. I do better on my own and from my friends. I learned Spanish that way. Ihave to say that since listening to Jay, I can even keep up with his raps songs, and my friends look at me like OK. They have no idea what I am saying, but they respect I like Asian music alot. Plus before I listen to anything, I look it up in english first, and then in its native tongue, to make sure that I am saying something that is appropriate. So far Jay's songs are just that. Plus he is helping me with my conversation Mandarin.

Do you understand mandarin, or do you listen to Jay Chou anyway even though you have no idea what he is saying?
I'm currently studying chinese, so I know a few words, but listening to Jay Chou songs is a really great way to improve my chinese and learn new words!
This is almost a year and a half late, but yea even if you do understand mandarin most of the time you would have no idea what Jay's singing unless you look at the lyrics. That seems to be most non-Jay Chow fan's opinion about him - I almost always get "I don't listen to Jay Chow, I have no idea what he's singing" type of response when I ask people if they like Jay.
I speak three Chinese dialects, mandarin, cantonese and one other. Though I'm getting a little rusty on mandarin since I barely use it.
Haha, I don't know any except how to write Jay's name. I memorized how to write it pretty quick, but I probably write the strokes in the wrong order
I'm planning on learning it soon, since I want to be able to at least understand Jay sometimes! Also, I'm not fluent in any language except for English, and I want to get to learn another.
I can't write anything in the right stroke order except the "person" (ren) character, so don't feel bad lol.
my mandarin-skills consist of maybe 10 words, but I'm going to study mandarin at the university next year. I really love chinese and asian culture and I'm really looking forward to some day being able to understand Jay's songs!

That depends, to what extent?
I was raised speaking Mandarin and English, but after I started Kindergarden, I thought, "Who needs to speak Chinese? This is America," and stopped speaking it. Boy, was I wrong. If I had known it would help me so much I would have stuck with it. -___-
Gah, I could have been tri-lingual like everyone else in my family-
father-Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, English (GAH, four. -__- He used to speak German, too. But he's like 50 something and he forgot it....)
mother-Chinese, Taiwanese, English
grandmother-Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese
sister-Chinese, Japanese, English
I only know Japanese and English. -___-
And both are really bad, considering. (I can't spell anything in English for my life and my Japanese accent is horrible)

If you were to learn Mandarin via songs, then Jay's singing is the wrong choice! I must say it because he is "popular" for his mumbling of songs.
Still, his music is fascinating.
If you really want to hear excellent pronunciation of Mandarin songs, then I suggest you listen to Fei Yi Qing"s songs. The singer who duet with Jay in Qian LI Zhi WAi.
However, Jay's song lyrics are worth reading as they have profound meanings.
Thanks to Fang Wen San, he is a good Chinese scholar, I would say.

Im learning Mandarin because of Jay Chou! :)) he gave big influences for me to learn it. But, obviously i cant use his songs to learn mandarin because he mumbles. My friends who are Mandarin-speakers also cant understand what Jay's sang. Now, i can understand and speak Mandarin a little. X)

I don't understand Mandarin at all. I've always appreciated music as music, and vocals as an instrument - just because you can't understand the lyrics doesn't mean you can't enjoy the song. However, if I have the pronunciation written down I will try to sing along, and so through listening to the music and trying to sing it myself I am actually learning both the sound and structure of the language and learning to recognise the odd word/character as well.

i wish i knew mandarin. when I hear it being spoken for more than 5 seconds, it sounds like a big blur to me. it is difficult for me to pick out each word. i'm only able to speak and listen to cantonese, but i wish i know mandarin instead because it sounds like a more romantic language

I think it is really awesome and very conciencious of this sites administrators to want to do this/help people learn chinese through music (especially people like me who are half chinese and struggling to keep up with the language.. but who also really want to!).
Although I really laughed at some of the comments because I know too from speaking to my aunties (Chinese form Taiwan) that they can't understand what he's saying in a lot of his songs although I know it's kind of his style. I also know that he changes his style based on his audience. I noticed he sings a lot clearer based on the circumstance. I would love to help in any way I can so if you need any kind of "test" group/individuals to assist in your endeavor to help people learn/keep up with their chinese through music (Learning Language link) I would be happy to assist with anything I can. Just let me know.
Thanks

I understand mandarin, finished my high school chinese exam. However, I do agree with Petricia that sometimes Jay's songs are so complicated with heaps of lyrics that I don't really understand what he's singing/rapping about. It's times like these that I google the lyrics or watch the mv.
