Danny Archer and Solomon Vandy are two men from Africa...even when they come from the same country they have different backgrounds and different stories to tell...One is an ex-mercenary from Zimbabwe and Vandy is just a fisherman.
The story begins in the civil war of Sierra Leone (1990), when the country was divided by a struggle between sides of the diamond mining industry....the Revolutionary United Front (R.U.F) and the contraband industry. The R.U.F uses diamonds to buy arms and finance their efforts. This movie revels the horrible actions that R.U.F made to their people just to get the diamonds. This movie also shows how the rebels (R.U.F) cut off the hands of people so that they cannot vote in the upcoming elections....like always it's related with policy.
Solomon Vandy is captured by the R.U.F army and he's sent to a mine to dig for diamonds, his family survives this encounter and immediately they are sent to a field of refugees, thanks to the help of international organisms. Vandy works under the command of Captain Poison, who quickly became his enemy because Vandy found a big piece of pink diamond and hid it from him. He buried the stone while the goverment troops attacked the field. Then Vandy and Captain Posion were arrested with the other rebels.
While Vandy was a prisioner, he met Danny Archer (an ex-mercenary from Zimbabwe) who discovers that Vandy has the pink diamond and plans to hunt down the stone with Vandy help', but in return Vandy asks him to help him find his son who were captured by the R.U.F and now he's a soldier. The two men met an american journalist, Maddy Bowen, and she helped them to find the little boy and the stone.
Although it seems like a regular movie of murders and precious stones, it's more than that....this movie tells a real story of real people and real situations that took place back in 1999. Sierra Leone was once the place were thounsands of innocent people were killed just because of the diamond industry and its develop.
Nevertheless, the movie also shows how the white guy gets the hot white chick. Most of the most important critics all around the world sees in bad way that this movie focus (too much according to them) in the romance of this couple but in my opinion that’s not actually what the film is about...Like on every other film the love between two of the actors emphasizes but not in a big way.
Leo and Djimon performances are pretty good...these two actors really deserve an Oscar and I really hope that this movie gets at least two awards. Djimon plays so well the role of Solomon, every escene made me cry....he was very moving. Leo speaks very well with the South African accent, it shows how great actor he is....he can play any role he wants...from an american artist in Titanic to a very ambitious man in this film.
We all think that diamonds are the most beautiful things on earth...we buy them all the time like if they were food or someting, withouth knowing that people were hurted and killed with the only intention of selling them and making money out of them.
Today Sierra Leone is in peace...the war ended but the pain still there.
" Zwick actually does a good job of depicting the RUF’s atrocities — showing us the dead and mangled villagers; the burning, pillaged towns; and the children forced to become killers — in a way that’s truly vivid and horrifying".
For me it's one of the best film I've ever seen...It has such a great message...and in some way or another this film educates.
