Compared to her previous album, Silk Road (Si Lu), Kissing is relatively more Mando-pop mainstream, with loads of ballads and radio-friendly mid-tempo songs and some surprises here and there. Unlike her image in Silk Road which had her decked in gold looking sophisticated, her image in this album is simpler and more lady-like who seems to only yearn to croon more karaoke-friendly love songs rather than powerhouse songs such as Silk Road & It’s A Pity It Isn’t You. Her singing this time round is more soothing and sweet with more falsettos. Nevertheless, Fish never fails to express herself fully in her songs, and retains her power to touch the masses with her beautiful singing. I suppose this is what they call “singing into people’s hearts”.
1) Four Seasons (Si Ji) – a soothing and light song with simple guitar accompaniment written by Tanya Chua, it feels like she is just next to you talking to you.
2) Warm (Nuan Nuan) – As the title suggests, this cute song gives one a happy and warm feeling. Seems to be a continuation to Ning Xia and Shou Shou De. The musical arrangement reminds one of a musical box or merry-go-round. Easy to sing along too!
3) Cola Ring (Ke Le Jie Zhi) – A potential karaoke-popular song. The romantic lyrics being written by Ah Xin of Mayday, reminds one of their innocent first love.
4) Amnesia (Shi Yi) – the long-awaited song written by Jay Chou. A little soft rock with a trace of Jay’s style, but definitely suited Fish perfectly and it made it her song.
5) Kiss (Qin Qin) – Another potential karaoke-friendly song. Written by Monster (Guai Shou) of Mayday, it displays her large vocal range, and her touching singing.
6) Xing Fu Yang Guo Zi Dian – Another easy-listening, sweet song that talks of crushes and the sweetness of being in love. Loads of falsettos.
7) Small Hand holds Big Hand (Xiao Shou La Da Shou) – Originally a Japanese track, and sung by Zeng Baoyi before. Again, a sweet and happy song that talks of being in love.
8) Flying Fish (Fei Yu) – A different style of music, originally written by a Korean composer. Interesting and beautiful music arrangement, with violin and guitar. Gives a dreamy and floating feeling.
9) It Is Not That I Do Not Understand (Bu Shi Wo Bu Ming Bai) – A beautiful and emotional ballad written by Singaporean songwriter, Jim Lim (Lin Qiyu). A sad song that tells of a stagnant relationship, the mysterious male voice (Lu Guang Zhong) adds more beauty in the song.
10) Xiao Xin Yan – An entertaining track composed by Cheer Chen (Chen Qizhen) which sounds a little jazzy and lounge-like yet playful. The lyrics tells of 2 girls’ inner feelings who have fallen for the same guy. A refreshing collaboration, and notice the interesting background vocals and harmonization. However, some music critics have reveiwed that Cheer’s influence is too strong, overshadowing Fish. I thought it was something different, hence adding an element of surprise to the otherwise typical Mando-pop album.
11) Dan Guo Tou - Fish’s first try at a Hokkien (min nan) song! A brave try but yet nicely sung, with the sad emotions successfully conveyed.
12) Prologue (Xu) – Fish’s yet another first try, this time at music composition. Arranged and played by Mayday, this is an easy-listening piece that ends of the album appropriately.
Track recommendations:
Nuan, Nuan, Ke Le Jie Zhi, Fei Yu, Bu Shi Wo Bu Ming Bai, Xiao Xin Yan (Notice I recommended almost half of the CD!)
An album worth listening, especially so if you love to sing Fish’s songs at karaoke sessions!
I'm sorry if this review is a bit too late, most of you have probably heard it, but just decided to post it since I've done it haha... Do share your comments on this album as well!
