august 2002, zhong shi wan bao (china times newspaper)
around 5am, just at the break of dawn, a young man who looked a bit like zhou jie lun was attentively scrubbing a shop's display window on the main street. next to him stood some people who scolded,'hurry up! don't stop! it's not clean enough.' what was happening?
the building's security officer was on patrol around the area, saw what was happening and found it a bit strange, and so he went over to the man who seemed a little 'weird', scrubbing other people's windows, to try and send him off. but when the officer got to him he couldn't believe his eyes, that the man was actually really superstar zhou jie lun! at the scene, zhou jie lun or 'zhou dong' (as called by others) said, 'sorry sir, i was playing 'da lao er' and i lost, so i was punished to scrub windows on the streets, please let me get it done, i'll go very soon.' the security officer stood there dumbfounded, the staff were laughing hystercially by the side, even took cameras out to take pictures for proof.
this was the story that happened after zhou jie lun and a team of staff members finished shooting for his new song's music video for two consecutive nights. jie lun wanted to lift everyone's spirits up, and so he suggested to play cards during free time between takes, choosing to play 'da lao er' which he's good at. he even proudly told his 'xiao shi mei' rui en, that he's very 'strong'. and so, they all set the 'loser has to scrub windows on the street' punishment. eventually they played until 4am in the morning, and jie lun turned out to be the big loser. he packed his things up, obediently went out to the street and started scrubbing the windows, refused to leave even when he was told by the security officer. his expression full of seriousness, just like fighting in a battle. jie lun even said, 'when you lose you have to be punished, it's fun this way'.
jie lun is mischievous and also has that forthright, undaunted spirit, even displaying it at work. during the preparation for his third album, he suddenly had an idea, and working with his songwriting partner fang wen shan and company manager yang jun rong, they set up an 'internal company staff lyrics competition', the second runner-up gets 5,000 dollars, out of fang wen shan's pocket; runner-up gets 6,000, out of 'zhou dong's' pocket; the winner gets the most amazing prize of : the lyrics being used and included in the new album, if it came out popular can even receive royalty of at least 250,000 dollars.
the lyrics used was titled 'an hao' (secret signal), which is about lovers sending each other short messages using 'secret signals', only understood by them. jie
lun chose the lyrics by staff from the planning department, even held an awards ceremony for it. during the ceremony he even threatened fang wen shan, 'our company has 'crouching tigers and hidden dragons', be aware of good lyricists they might come and take your job away.' fang wen shan also 'returned a compliment' and said, 'i can also hold a song-writing competition'.
