[SG Talk] Junior College life and subjects

Well, I'm starting JC next year, which roughly translates into four days' time!

I started this thread to clear some doubts about the new JC subjects...

I think you all know that JC subjects are now categorised under the levels H1,H2 and H3. Basically, they are like AO, A and Special papers from the previous system (I think). H1 is similar to H2 in difficulty, but is half of H2 in terms of content. H3 is the most challenging.

There's a new subject called KI -- Knowledge and Inquiry. Just wondering if anyone of you has taken it or know anything about it? I heard it's a class without textbooks and the subject is quite philosophical.. My friend heard that every week, one has to go up to present their findings to the class! This sounds real scary :wacko: I'm a bad public speaker..

Another subject: Economics. Can anyone tell me more about it? I flipped through my sis' book and the subject looks kind of dry and difficult. :worry:

Chinese Language Elective Programme: If you take cLEP, you'd be given the chance to offer H3 chinese right? But it's not compulsory, is it? H2 chinese seems quite fun but also a little challenging.. And as for H3 chinese, there is a creative writing component right! tough!

Basically everyone is :welcome: here to talk about their JC life or share their views on subjects and programmes ... whatever, so just talk away! hopefully these info will be helpful or useful to those who're planning to go JC in future! :D

Orientation's starting soon and I'm feeling a bit nervous. *palms sweat* hahaa

haha good luck to you... i think H2 chinese is just like the previous 'chinese at A levels'... not very hard... alot of writing and memorising... and own opinions... haha i never take KI before but even w/o KI, there will still be alot of 'opportunity' to speak in front of the class... haha because for me we had quite alot of public speaking lessons and course... oh and btw, theres PW which is a waste of time haha... which JC are you going to?

ZOMG YOU'RE GOING TJ?! lol i'll see you there then! HAHA! lol for me i'm more inclined to the poly route and i'm going first 3 months to experience what jc is like.. and yes the subjects thingy is confusing. well i'm in arts and that's kinda bad for me because i have no idea what subjects i would want to take. i'm hoping i can appeal to science! =D

i was from ajc... haha yeah chinese at a levels also got some literature part... got different papers... 1 is for language and 1 is for literature... but i not sure whether H2 chinese will be the same... :-)

I took the KI test today, cause i thought 'why not, if i never try, i'll never know what it's like' though the teacher and the subject seem intimidating. The test consists of 10 'logic' questions but they are MCQ. Section B consists of a comprehension.

the one i did today has a story which goes like this: this animal, a quadruped (or something?) walked towards four people and started recommending its body parts for them to eat. they are in some strange outer space world i think. X says he couldn't do that because it's too cruel. Y says it's better to eat an animal which wants to be eaten than one which doesn't. X says 'that's not the point' but in the end also seems to think Y's statement makes sense.

Q1: Would you be able to eat the quadruped? Please give reasons for your decision.

Q2: Why would others oppose X and Y's viewpoints?

Totally didn't know what to write so just sqeezed out a few lines.. and i saw that others were writing long essays . gosh!

I've just started my JC life in one of the two JCs located in the north of Singapore. Shan't talk much about it... =X

But the teachers there, or rather, tutors, are quite dedicated and caring towards us, and that's what I like about the JC that I'm currently in.

I don't think KI will interest me much. I'm not that good in English Language. :oops:

Wouldn't mind to share what subject combinations you are taking? I'm taking H2 Maths, H2 Physics, H2 Computing and H1 Econs.

cause i didnt go to those popular ones too, and i envy those who went to TJC ! ahh, my prelim results was just so horrendous. =X

but anyways, i have to admit that my orientation camp was fun. hehes. i mean i love my group and those new friends i make. muahaha.

and guess i'm taking H2 - chem, maths, econs, H1 - probably geo or physics. x)

Yep my orientation activities were interrupted when I went to take the test. (and then i got lost in school after the test cos i couldn't find my OG). One of the teachers is an ang moh, and initially I went for the talk, and some students asked questions. And their spoken english was like so 'slang', I didn't understand what they were talking about.

I initially planned to take ChineseLangLit2, Lit2, Econs2, KI, hist1. But I went for the KI interview today and i think i screwed it up quite badly with my lame answers..

There's no such above combination in my school! and GP,CLL2,Lit2,Hist2, Econ1,math1 also not inside (this is my second choice)! but i told the teacher i/c.. so i will leave it to fate to decide where im put into.

basically im in arts. planned to try scary KI for 1st 3 mths (if i get in, if i don't it will be ok too).. and econs,chn lit. but it seems chnlit and lit doesnt go hand in hang tog, cos not many ppl want to take it (mayb i am the only one)..

i've always heard from others that getting into a sci course will gurantee you of more career options in the future but i just realised that getting into art course isnt that bad either since i'm only interested in taking the business and accounting course in uni (that is if i managed to get in) . so even though im posted to sci course now, maybe i'll switch to art after the first three months end.

yea ! we had mass dance today too ! it was fun. did you all do the cha cha cha thingy? i asked some of my friends and their school did that too plus some other same movements. haha.

haha, yea ! cheering was super fun. haha. i nearly had a sorethroat but thanks to those strepsils that my friend gave me. haha.

oh and what games did you all have? we played one yst which require you to pass the cup with your mouth from one end to the other and it was kinda awkward but fun anyway.

tomorrow is fusion night and i guess it'll be fun. (:

no im not good in both languages but i hope i can improve by taking both subjects. my verbal lang is very broken! though im in hcl, my grasp of chinese is way bad! eng vocab not good too! btw i failed my ki interview, but at least i tried the test, so no regrets ^^

yep the 'science market' is so saturated go arts la! haha

mass dance was way fun and cheering too! shouting for ur clan and doing cheers from other clans are great! everyone was going high! they were splashing water everywhere and the floor was littered with all the party stuff, poppers thingy.. and lightsticks too. our orientation ended yesterday. some activities include amazing race (just taking buses here and there and completing tasks) and dancing around the fountain of wealth at suntec. but i forgot all the moves, so was just jumping here and there. then it rained and we ran in the rain, so fun! but our stuff got wet!

the house capts rock!! they are high and enthu 24/7.. and all cheers sound nice! go nyrah!

gd luck in getting into ny, im sure u can do it! becos i heard most of the time u'll do btr in o's than prelims so all the best!

OH YEAHH TJ ORIENTATION ROCKED!! which OG and clan were you from, rainbow?? i'm from OG5 blazon! omg you went for the KI test!? omg i dont even dare THINK of taking KI lol. i was from arts and appealed to sci.. and suddenly i regret taking science, cuz i suddenly want to take cross combi lol.

ok wait i just saw you were from nyrah lol. omgg i want orientation to go on longer! i cant believe we are already starting lectures tomorrow.. sheesh!

anyway i lost my voice real bad!! then cannot shout for the last day of orientation.. shout also nothing come out haha.. and i miss my OG so much! and it feels weird that there is no orientation today o.0

oh and i'm taking chem bio maths econs all H2.. the subjects many people take haha!

i found out that our cheers are similar to some of MJ's .. hehe i think everyone recycles their cheers.. probably they exchange cheers after first 3 mths if they go to diff jcs..

school life is getting a little boring.. lectures and tutorials.. bahh and there are alot of discussions during classes.. and many readings too!

i feel like i'm getting a fever..

it actually makes poly life look more attractive. lol. everyone in my class is mugging so hard ! it's kind of stressful actually.
