ok well, i hope i dont get lambasted for this post...and i dunno how many ppl think the same way as i do...
but just the number of times i hear "merry " is pissing me off.
i mean, cant you be more original? say something else like..i dunno
heres a list that i found on a thesaurus
Synonyms: amusing, blithe, blithesome, boisterous, boon, carefree, cheerful, comic, comical, convivial, enjoyable, entertaining, facetious, festive, frolicsome, fun-loving, funny, gay, glad, gleeful, go-go, grooving*, hilarious, humorous, jocund, jolly, joyful, joyous, jumping, larking, light-hearted, lively, mad, mirthful, perky, pleasant, riotous, rip-roaring*, rocking, rollicking, saturnalian, sportive, sunny, unconstrained, uproarious, vivacious, wild, winsome, zappy*, zingy*, zippy*
i mean, there you go, a quick search and i found like over 30 alternative, better sounding words to "merry" christmas.
like, in today's world, i think it would sound better to say "hav a rocking christmas!" and that sounds better than "merry christmas!"
cos when you say "merry christmas" inevitably a "ho ho ho" follows...and thats reserved for santa. and are you santa? i dont think so!
argh.... :-x

ha ha ha! i absolutely agree! how can you have a merry xmas when you live in australia? its as obsolete as singing "i'm dreaming of a WHITE christmas". ha ha ha, instead it'd be "i'm dreaming of a DRY christmas"
instead of a merry xmas, you might as say hope the sales are good. hope the christmas sales are good up in sydney fartking ;)
hope you had a GROOVY xmas *grins*

Try Guo Mei Mei's new christmas carols. Its seriously overplayed on the television. Its always ,"Merry merry christmas baby." Over and over again. I almost threw a rock at the television the other day.
"Have a gay christmas" seems wierd. I know gay means happy. But it also means homosexuality:dry:
---
Not that there’s anything wrong with it…I mean, gay rhymes with Jay. Jay could be gay for all we know. Wait…is he? I think I might like that…secretly.

Yeah I know you sick of that word, but it happens only one day in a year. And it sounds weird, try using other words that remain the meaning of 'merry'
you are some kind of anti-merry (christmas) lol

LOL We had a white xmas in Melbourne this year. It hailed in the morning and the whole neighbourhood was covered in ice. It's the closest I've ever had to a white xmas :) Hehe don't you just love global warming?
I know how you feel Chris. When I send my xmas messages to people I usally say 'have a happy xmas and a merry new year' :D swapping the words around may help those that are dyslexic and makes it look like you put a lot of thought into the xmas message lol
But I still hope you had a joyous xmas. Is joyous a word ?____?
btw one thing I really hate about xmas cards is the phrase 'season's greetings'. It's so old-school haha

I just use "Happy holidays", which is another cliche like "Merry christmas". But "happy holidays" doesn't give me an image of Jesus, unlike the other one. Not everyone believes in Christmas, and I don't want to be rude.
What the hell is the meaning of Christmas? Right now, I think it's all about gifts and money. Materialistic things own us now, not true valuable like love, friendship, togetherness, etc.< That was cheesy

i agree with you orangeman. at school i did an investigative study on the significance of xmas, and now its just for commercial uses. i mean, who actually celebrates it for the spiritual significance - even though i do XD

Putting "merry" in front of Christmas is merely part of tradition. I see nothing wrong with that even if it is repetitive.
As for using synonyms of "merry" to put in front of "Christmas", I'll go as far as using "happy", but beyond that you stand the high risk of being misunderstood as silly or stupid, neither of which makes you look very good in the workplace or with family and friends.

I'm more annoyed by "x-mas" than "merry", even though I do agree that "merry" is overused.
orangeman, even though "happy holidays" doesn't give everyone a mental image of Jesus, it does for some. Holiday was originally said holy day--so it is, therefore, rooted in spiritual aspects. Maybe..."Solicitations of the Season" would get around the "holiness" of other greetings.
The meaning of Christmas has long been replaced with Santa and gifts and red-nosed reindeer. It's sad. >.> And the REAL St. Nick would probably look with aghast if he knew what Christmas has turned into--and what HE has been turned into!
I think next Christmas I shall say "Have a rip-roarin' Christmas!"
cinsin...joyous is a word :wink2:
queeniecwt, I haven't thought of someone as silly or stupid if they say something other than "merry"...just as original and able to climb over the wall of silly tradition. If one person starts saying something different, maybe everyone will give in to free-thought and originality! :excited:
-climbs off soapbox-
Have a Blissful New Year Everyone :D

Haha!! I actually like saying "Merry Christmas" ... i think it's better than "Happy Christmas" becasue to me happy christmas doesn't sound right...
and i agree with jayndytx... i don't like it when people say "xmas" ... it's a bit iffy!! LOL...
.x. 2007... Happy New Year!! ... 2007 .x.
Have A Gay New Year!! HAHA!! *GAY MEANING HAPPY*... :bleh: LOL!!

jayndytx: rip roarin' christmas sounds heaps good!
I totally agree on that bit that Christmas has just turned into a big commercialised holiday. Where everyone buys random presents for everyone and then when you receive them, you'd have to decide what to do with them because on one hand, you don't need them (who needs wrist rests!?) but on the other, you can't throw them away because it's just not right. So it ends up in a corner of your room.
Grrr. Frantic random christmas shopping grates me the most.
