I know most of you all are Asian, and that a lot of you weren't born in the US or Canada. I want to know what everyone's favorite American, Canadian, or Mexican dish is. No Chinese food here, just of all the NA foods, which is your favorite?
Mine.....is pretty much the whole spectrum of Mexican food. Tacos, Enchiladas, Nachos, pico de galllo, frijoles, Spanish rice. Oh and beer, I LOVE American Beer (my fav is Papbst Blue Ribbon.)

When I'm in the mood for good food, I break out the bbq grill and cook either ribeye, fillet mignon, or a fat slab of porterhouse steak, rare of course.

One thing that I've learned from my Mexican friends is that most of those supposedly "Mexican food" aren't really Mexican. It's just like Pasta Alfredo doesn't exist in Italy. And California Roll doesn't exist in Japan. Just like Chinese didn't invent the fortune cookie.
Anyhow, not to go off topic, I'm not sure what exactly IS authentic American cuisine. What's uniquely American and not adopted from another country or culture? I'm not sure. So it's hard for me to say. Does fastfood count? Well, I love cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, fries, etc....

True, true, true vunsin, but is there really a genuinelly "authentic" anything. I mean everything is borrowed from somewhere else anyway, haha, especially in America. However, it is pretty close to "authentic" when the owners and cooks are recent imigrants from Latin America. Toco Bell isn't authentic, but it's still damn good.

Isn't clam chowder an English cuisine? O.o
Honestly, the only food I can think of that's truly American is fast food. Fries, cheeseburgers, nuggets. *-*
Oh, and it's always funny how 'authentic' food in America's never really eaten in the place of origin. Greatest example - Panda Express. XD!

True, clam chowder did orginate in England, but it was brought to New England and was adapted to the new enviroment and became New England Clam Chowder. How itr is different I don't know, because I hate clam chowder. Many regional cuisines in America are immigrated from some other part of the world. As is true witrh most cuisines everywhere. For example, in Nebraska, where I'm from, we have Runzas. They are beef and cabbage cooked inside a bun. Came from Russia, but brought by Germans that lived in Russia. It has been changed and made more American over the years by adding American cheese and fries to it, and thus it is considered a part of the AMerican diet. Many other foods like that.

I think I love anything with cheese.
I don't mind seafood so much when I was back in Malaysia because the seafood back home were from the sea and fresh and they don't smell all fishy from miles away. No offense, but I think Americans (or at least those that I know) just don't know how to make really good seafood. I find the smell of seafood at my school's cafeteria disgusting. I won't force myself to even try them. I can't even go within 3 feet of them before I feel like throwing up. Red Lobster (I don't know if they have it elsewhere) is okay, but only with the lobsters. But when I go to Chinese restaurant I like to order fish, crabs, scallops, etc. I'd eat almost anything except for shrimp.
I think steak is okay, but I can't eat raw food at all (I'd get stomach cramps or even before I could swallow them I'd automatically spit them out!), so my steak has to be extra well-done. So whenever I go to American restaurants, the waitresses hate me because I make them take the steak back to recook it whenever I see the tiniest hint of pink. But of course I tip them generously after that. :wink2:

I think practically anything that is fatty is american food. Well in the US at least. I'm not sure if they have them anywhere else, but a fried twinky. Those things i heard are nothing but fat. Its suppose to be about the daily recommended amount of fat for a day. Just in one! What is really gross is a fried hamburger. I've only heard of those, but never actually seen one. Have you guys heard of them? ack* too much fat...

Um... I love lots of fatty food. I could put mayonaise in my sandwiches until the bread becomes soggy.
Smonkkey
11-12-2003, 04:13 AM
that sounds interesting..... yum, mayo. The only thing that i can't get enough of is peanut butter. I can eat it out of the jar, as long as its cold. Vunsin, is that a piece of candy on your sig.? I guess you do like fatty foods. hahaha..... that wasn't funny. sigh*
vunsin
11-12-2003, 04:21 AM
Smonkkey: This is off topic, but that piece of candy on my sig is actually representing my name. :) I couldn't use that name because somebody else had already used it, so I used my Chinese name.
Oh... Don't get me started on cream cheese and butter. You don't want to know HOW or how fast I eat them. I'd just scoop them with a spoon and start eating them like yogurt. I used to be crazy about chocolate too, until it started to give me migraine headaches because I think there was some hormonal changes in my body. I think I'm getting old...
Smonkkey
11-12-2003, 04:28 AM
Cream cheese hasn't really grown on me yet. But butter.... yummm... Its super good. Especially with garlic and olive oil in pasta. Or in cookies.
Hormonal changes?? I don't want to ask... thats too bad. You should eat as much chocolate as you can while you still can. When you get old... it will make you.... ummmm.... yeah....

11-12-2003, 05:02 AM
Smonkkey: You're probably too young and you're a guy, so you wouldn't know how MY body would react to chocolate, would you? :wink2: Anyways, migraine headaches are so bad I can't even see anything at all. All I could do is lie down but even then it hurts so bad I can't hear or even think. It gets that bad. So no more chocolate for me now, at least not as much as before.
Well, let me see what else I love... What other food that are considered American? Maybe chips? I love chips, mostly cheese, ranch, or sour cream flavored. It's bad if I open a new big bag and then start to watch DVD or go online. I'd forget to stop eating and end up finishing everything!

Haha, why don't you explain it to him, vunsin. ROTFLMA, so chocolate actually works for you, huh. If only that were true for all women.
My favorite American snack foods are sunflower seeds (salted, roasted in the shell). So good, and relatively healthy.
Another one of my all-time favs in AMerica is pizza, not aSian style pizza, but good, greasy, meaty, cheesy, US pizza. I'm so hungry now, haha.

And what do you know about female hormones? I'm assuming you think you know a lot? :wink2: But anyways, yeah... I don't enjoy chocolate anymore. I used to have it as a substitute for lunch and dinner too...

Oh yeah, I forgot about pizza. I love pepperoni pizza with extra cheese. No sausages for me. I don't like the type that they use for pizza. But anyhow, the pizzas in Malaysia are different. They're thicker and has more stuffs on them. Hmm... The only kind of pizza I like here is the one I've mentioned.

whats "asian style pizza" ? well sadly i've never been to asia, but i'm assuming you guys mean that they don't make pizza well there? hehe...well i'm really paranoid about grease and all my friends make fun of me for this...but i have a habit of "blotting" my pizza with napkins. it takes at least 3 sheets to soak up the bright orange grease until i'm willing to eat it.
have any of guys eaten at california pizza kitchen? i think they have chains throughout u.s. ...but thats fancy pizza haha and its sooo yummy!

the only thing i know about american food is that it's the most fattening and over-sized... when i think about american food, fast food pops into my mind.
i used to love eating in fast food chains... i can't believe that ppl actually blame these restaurants for their obesity!

The key to embracing the American food is to look beyond the calories and savor the mouth-watering taste of it. All the fat, salt, sugar, spice, and meat makes it awsome.....so awesome it's deadly.
Oh, and as far as I'm concerned if smokers can sue the tobacco companies for their health problems then fat people should be able to sure McDOnald's for the same reason. It's the same principle and both kill, and both groups of people are equally weak when it comes to will power.
