ok everyone.. well i just have a random thought in my head... like after watching world cup rugby i saw 'scotland' play against australia... and when i thought of scotland... men n skirts came to mind... well every1 has that stereotypical comment bout men and skirts =gay... well i don't quite think that.. because skirts is just a form of clothing there aint anything wrong with men and that right???.. well it may look weird... but is any1 against it??...

I would never wear a skirt

But in scotland they wear it alot. I don't think they are gay for doing that though. It's just how they dress :)

i don't see anything wrong with men wearing skirts. -the gladiator comes into mind and so does brave heart-. some of them guys look sexy in skirts. as longs as it isn't a dress for females i'm fine.not that i have any thing against men who wears dresses. its just the visual image hurts my face.

Um, guys in skirts... No. Maybe men didn't look weird in the past when skirts were accepted and part of daily dress, but I find it hard to imagine a guy wearing a skirt today. I remember seeing Kevin from BSB do that once. It was just ... wrong. >.<

Ditto to that!
Though i remember... *scratches her head* seeing Prince Charles wearing those scottish skirts in a magazine... very disturbing....
Of course it's weird for guys to wear skirts (exception-->scottish skirts)! Since society won't be finding that normal.. More to do with Cultural and society beliefs. :glug:

Yeah for a guy to wear it on special/specific occasions (like those scottish pipe performers etc) is ok and perfectly fine but other then that, it's really... weird. :?

i think it is very wrong for guys to wear skirt excpet the scottish tartan skirt...
i think it is like an insult to girls when guys wear skirts...like u know usually they wear skirts to make fun and stuff...

The "skirt" that Scottish men wear is called a KILT.

And no, it's totally different from a sarong.

Also, if it's an insult to girls for guys to wear skirts, then it should also be an insult to guys for girls to wear pants.

it must be quite strange to do such things if it's not part of a religion or language culture... my friend wore before...a skirt of his mom with big red dots on it...the situation was so hilarious... but still can't imagine if guys r walking in skirt on the streets

hmm..a guy wearing a skirt..what about when women first started wearing pants? im sure the..males..were against it..or felt weird..which is how most people (including me) feel about guys wearing skirts unless it was their culture. but who knows..in 10 or 20 years, with things changing so much, guys wearing skirts wouldnt be considered "weird" anymore. so we'd have to accept it huh? :?

shouling
11-09-2003, 06:36 AM
in Scotland it is called a Kilt~! there it is not so much a fasion statement, but a culteral thing. they dont wear them all the time either, just for traditions and events.

as for guys just walking around in skirts for no reason......ICKY~! it would just look dumb~!

it doesnt neccisarily mean they are gay, but no self respecting male would ever be cought dead in a skirt~!

SARONG is an English word also. It's an "adopted" English word. You can find it in the Oxford dictionary with the meaning: "strip of cloth worn tucked round the body."

I think it's NOT WRONG for guys to wear skirt...but the point is will they wear it?Yea...maybe like what Shouling has said..the Scottish guys will wear it for traditions and special events.Other than that tradition thing..i think most of the guys would choose not to wear a skirt and walk around for everyone would be staring at him.But it's a different story if it's involved artists.I have seen many cross-dresser artists like Placebo...and even Edison Chen has wore a skirt before (i've seen that in the newspaper). The fact that they're artists and no matter what they wear...people especially the fans will always admire them.Anyway...my point is it's not wrong tho for a guy to wear a skirt.Maybe...it will be just a bit weird..hehe :shifty:

Well the stuff i've been exposed to i don't find it werid. Every friday at my school, the scotish club wears a kilt, and when you see guys in those hola skirts it seems normal. As long as it isn't a short tight skirt that is way above their knees. *shivers...

No problem. Nowadays a lot of words are borrowed and adopted to and from the English language, and other languages too. :)

Anyways... With the whole gender equality thing, guys should be able to wear any kind of skirts if they want to. :wink2: It might be "weird" at first, but then I'm sure it was "weird" when women first started wearing pants.

11-09-2003, 08:40 AM
There isn't anything wrong with men wearing skirts it's only 'weird' or 'gay' because it's not something we see everyday, there are still people out there who think that women shouldn't wear pants.

11-09-2003, 10:30 AM
Every guy wore 'skirts' a long time ago..then things changed and skirts as we know them as today were restricted ot women. But in Scotland, kilts with a particular pattern belong to a certain family and that style of pattern is passed down from gerneration to generation as a heritage. Thats why Scottish people wear kilts with pride at traditional events and family gatherings, because it displays their family history. For example, most Scottish men wear kilts at their wedding...and the leather bag at the front of a kilt is called a sporan... :D

David Beckham gave the tabloids a field day when he wore a sarong. Im sure people heard this and its constantly mentioned in the UK. He kinda is a walking fashion statement and because he ws pictured wearing one, other guys in the UK think it is alright to do so on holiday. So if you ever go to Spain etc, you will see a whole load of guys in sarongs on the beach...

I am okay with guys wearing skirt since I, as a gal am wearing pants/jeans etc... BUT

please... no mini skirts and please wear something beneath that skirt... really... I don't want to see what's beneath (especially given the fact that most guys I see love to spread their legs miles apart when they sit...)

Yes,Jerria..i'm sure coz i have seen that pic of Edison wearing a skirt a couple of times in the newspaper.I was kinda shocked at 1st.Anyway it wasn't a mini skirt that he was wearing...it was more like a long skirt..

well every1 has that stereotypical comment bout men and skirts =gay

wow....that reminds me of the stereotype where a tall skinny guy who's neat is gay....that's not a good one either......

hmmm.....i guess after guys wearing flares....the next progressive step would be to take out the material in between...and it'd technically be a skirt!

and if you wear it like Mr Bean...nobody would know...if you just tuck it in between your legs...they'd still look like pants =)

 men with skirts are definitely not gay
who knows maybe a few years later it could be the fashion the century?
people's perspective changes constantly and is currently changing too
i's like a cycle

for the human at the earliest years of the stone age, naked is the 'fashion'
then bear fur becomes the fashion
eventually people started covering themselves up
then the peak is reached, everything goes down hill from there
the cloth gets lesser and more skin revealed
finally people will be naked again and the cycle goes on...

so wat i'm tryin 2 say is the perception of people could change to think that men with skirts actually look good
and i saw a programme recently about a fashion designers to revolutionize the fashion industry with men wearin skirts..just like wat this topic has come out with!
as for now, it is totally unacceptable for me :D

im not against guys who wear skirts....
if it can be seen normal in scotland...i think it can b normal anywhere....
but if you think about it...people would probably stay away if they saw a guy in a skirt in the streets now...

-dream-
11-11-2003, 11:11 AM
i don't think guys who have certain desires to wear skirts should be discriminated, but really...it just makes me wonder why a man would want to wear one.

If not meant for homosexual purposes, and only because they find skirts a somewhat nice piece of clothing to wear, then by all means go ahead. Scottish men wear skirts, and they're not necessarily all gay, so it's not really WRONG to wear a piece of cloth wrapped around your waist. but again, i can't help but wonder who would want to do that.

i think its pretty weird for a guy to wear skirts outdoors actually..imagine seeing a guy on the streets wearing a skirt..people would automatically think that he's abnormal or just plain gay right?think men should just stick to their usual shorts and trousers.. but its quite ironic that gals are able to wear clothes guys wear but guys wearing dresses and skirts are just not acceptable..

but if guys wear skirts cuz its their traditional costume..then its perfectly fine..like what u guys said, men in scotland wear them alot cuz its part of their culture..and i think malays wear a cloth tied around their waist too..somewhat like a skirt and i think its quite normal..nothing wrong with that

i think is okay with guys wearin kilts or skirts. cuz i'm kinda used by it i think, cuz there this one guy from my english class, few times wear his kilt to represent his scottish heritage, but still is only one guy.

i have no problems with guys wearing skirts. as long as he has the legs for it and the shirt to go with it. dont clash is all that i ask.
fashion changes to fast for me to have a lasting opinion about it.
if a guy feels comfortable about wearing a skirt then props to him. if he wants to strap on some killer heels along with it, i'll offer to help pick them out.

I think it's okay. Men do need a little air in there  If a man can carry a skirt and still look manly in it, that adds up to his masculinity factor, don't you think so?

And in some cultures, men do wear skirts. It's jsut that we're used to the fact that skirts are for women in our culture.

i neither confirm nor deny.
hold on let me check.
ok i still dont kno how to convert girl to guy size. we start at 0. which is a trick in itself.

i wonder if they did make skirts for guys, would you still stick to they guy measurments? but i'm getting off topic. so guys can wear skirts, its not wrong. who knows whats masculine and feminine anymore? unisex is our generation.

i'm still gonna pretend youre still too big to preserve my self-esteem.

lilmizzaudi

i think that if a man wears a skirt he isn't necessarily "gay"
i am buddhist and our monks don't wear anything under their shawls which are basically cloths draped over their bodies to form long togas. i.e. dresses. usually "gay" men wear regular clothes. but there are those who are eccentric and dress in drag. we shouldn't be quick to judge some one just because of what they are wearing, that's superficial

Donny
11-26-2003, 07:22 AM
lilmizzaudi is right. a guy wearin a skirt doesn't necessarry be a gay, though that is kinda weird. hahaz... dun try that, guys!!!

-+my-memory+-
11-26-2003, 07:30 AM
lolz its true.. juss because a guy wears a skirt it doesn't mean their gay.. its juss so normal for people to judge a person by their appearence that it came into a conclusion of stating that males are gay IF they dress up in skirts.. but i don't find any problems with it....

i dont think its' wrong at all.. cos people hav different culture, i kno that if i see a man in a skirt walkin down the street, i'll stare at him, but that's because i've been raised in a society where seeing men in skirts are strange. but if u got to scotland, peole there dont mind at all guys in skirts, cos its' their culture.

I don't think you can say positively that it's wrong for men to wear skirt, because every culture is different. I mean, hey Chinese guys 'he fu' costumes are basically skirts on the bottom. It's just that we were raised to think that it's weird for guys to wear skirts. So no, I don't think it's wrong, you just have to try to understand what kind of culture the man is coming from. But...if the guy was like cross-dressing..that's a different story.

What people choose to wear is never wrong. It may be WEIRD but not wrong. I guess if it's part of their tradition then I don't have anything against it. If they feel comfortable in it then why not?

Well, i don think it's wrong for guys to wear skirts... cos it's like many decades ago, guys are actually the one wearing skirts too... so are the girls... it's only as time pass, for wadeva reasons, guys don wear skirts... n turn up to be like now, guys wearing pants n not skirts... i believe if there is any artist who is gonna wear skirts n start the trend, guys will start to wear it... it's a propagande thingy... haha...

Uhhh...unless it's a kilt or a sarong and provided they don't wear one all the time, it's ok. But if it's a skirt of any kind then that is sooo wrong.

yes. First of all, who wants to see hairy male legs (raise your hand if you want to...scans audience....seens no hands up). Thats just sick.

Second, not only does it make a man look incredibly gay and ridiculous, but it also makes them seem (gasp) feminine. As we all know, men like to be "gangsta" and "macho". Its an inherent part of being male, you just gotta be the biggest and the baddest on the block to prove your manlihood. Thats why you see all these peopel with those really baggy pants/doo-rags/talking like "thugs". A man that is seen as "feminine" is usually considered either "gay" or a (borrowing governator schwarzzenager's term) a "girly man".

And third, think about how uncomfortable it would be to wear a skirt. You wouldn't be able to run, or play sports (unless its one of those mini-skirts...but lets not go there  ).

so thats it...3 arguments why men shouldn't wear skirts

The scottish men wearing their traditional skirt is ok but not for normal everyday. I can't imagine a guy wearing a skirt walking along the street. :worry: It just looks very funny and weird. Trying to picture that makes me laugh hahahahaha :-)

I know that in some asian countries, men wear something that looks like a skirt which is like sarong. Maybe it's called a sarong too. It's long and you wrap it around the waist. That is ok too.

i think there is a huge difference between female skirts and kilts or any traditional gowns like the wrap around things in southeast asia... sarongs? i have nothing against people wearing kilts, etc. in movies or as tradition or watever, but guys wearing any other form of skirt is rather disturbing.

if a guy wants to wear a skirt, let him wear a skirt. it's not "wrong" - i mean, it's not hurting anyone, they're not exposing anything we dont wish to see and they're happy so it's fine! if society can't handle it, it's their problem isn't it?

yeah, but we live in society (except for you and me shay, we roam with the wolves, grrrr)

i don't think that anything is 'wrong' and i don't think that it is wrong for men to wear skirts. i mean men wear skirts in scottland and ireland don't they? it may just seem weird or strange to us becasue we do not do it but what we are doing may seem strange to other people from other countries. they might look at us and think we are doing something 'wrong' because the men in our country don't wear skirts. its just that we are not used to it.

I see nothing wrong with it. It's like how they used to say it's wrong for girls to wear pants. But obviously most guys (in North America, at least) will probably ridicule another guy for wearing a skirt. However, I'm a little concerned if guys start wearing skirts because they have hairy legs.

Men in skirts? That's insane!
Unless they're in Scotland,people wouldn't mind.
But in today's modern world, that will be viewed wrong by the majority.
They would raise their eyebrows and give an "immoral" tag to does who does it.
Even gay people don't do it.How much more if 100% straight men do it?
I can do it if people want me to.It's ok with me but how about the rest?
I cannot wear a skirt in public because there are several reasons that would prohibit me.
I can't believe that this world keeps pretending that it had become so politically correct!

twilighthush

Some of this discussion has severely jerked my eyebrow up a step or two in complete shock; dismay; disgust.

Who are we to dictate how people dress? It's absolutely ludicrous that anyone would simply tag on being gay as wearing a skirt. I don't think anyone could possibly get more stereotypical; more shallow; more disrespectful to anyone than that.

As someone who is very integrated in Asian culture, particularly with rock scenes, it's rather a common thing for me to see androgynous rock stars in full makeup, skirts, you name it. And they happen to be some of the straightest guys I've ever come across in my life. I personally have a steadfast belief that any guy who can get into a skirt and wear makeup is a guy that is far more comfortable with himself; with his masculinity (surprisingly) than a guy that's ripped and tries to act all hard when he's just an idiot who doesn't have any amount of depth.

Quite frankly, a guy that'll wear a skirt has far bigger balls than a guy that's always trying to reassure himself of his masculinity by beefing himself up as much as he can and talking like an idiot blockhead.

If we want to cut it down even more: Why the hell do you even CARE? It's not YOUR life, is it? It's not YOUR choice is it? Seriously. >_> Some people need to wake up and realize that something as superficial as skirts is hardly anything to judge people by.

don't mind as long as they look good doing it. leslie cheung did it, nicolas tse did it. the scots done for ages. i think a lot of ancient cultures did; many who wore robes that look like long skirts.

the final word is to wear it tastefully.

THANK YOU. God damn. Seriously.

I mean, everyone worships Nicholas Tse and Leslie Cheung and they've done the entire thing. Leslie was even gay and got up in full makeup, while Nic sported a blue mohawk and eyeliner at one point or another.

It might seem kinda weird for a random non-Scotish person to wear a skirt, but I have no problem with it (the scots are sooo hot in their skirts!!. I remember I was on a field trip one day with my school and this guy and girl traded the bottoms they were wearing, so that the guy was now wearing a skirt and the girl was now wearing the guys pants. The guy got in serious trouble (suspended) of course they did nothing to the girl. That incident really sickend me.

Look, in schools, why do girls wear skirts and guys have their long pants?
I think... it's because guys have their hairy legs from puberty... That's why they wear long pants... Can u imagine guys with hairy legs wearing a skirt?

Also, while ur mind is still wondering how men looks like with a (mini) skirt, can you please take a look at their leg muscles, that most girls don't have? Won't it be atrocious to see those sticking out visible muscles in their leg, with hairs... when wearing a skirt? ??

It's the image to impress someone, so and therefore, image is a very important issue... That's why I am emphasizing so much on image of a guy... when wearing a skirt... Won't that be funny, like a clown.. lol?

Nevertheless, it's still the men's choice to wear or not to wear (the skirt)... It's their own business afterall.

i dont think there's anything wrong with men wearing skirts. what simms said is rather true. their big muscles and hairy legs, it doesnt look well with a skirt. but also, from young, boys already dont wear skirt so its not a habit and like suddenly a boy wears a skirt, it will be really funny.

but maybe if from old tradition, boys wear skirt, i guess it isnt really that bad if boys wear skirts NOW. but still, yeaaa, its a boy's decision whether they wanna wear or not. (:

We had this huge debate at our school too :)

I personally don't think I get distracted from it...but a lot of people are. And if it's any distraction for students, then I say take them away. But then again, our girls at our school can wear extra short skirts...so I mean, guys can express themselves too?

Well, one way to end this is take away both guys with skirts and girls with extra short skirts.

Hm...

i dont think its wrong for guys to wear skirts...but it is pretty weird to see it because it isn't that common. guys might be afraid to be dubbed "gay" just because they wear female clothing. How come girls can wear guy clothing as well and nothing really bad will happen, but if a guy wears a skirt they become an outcast. it shouldn't be wrong. whatever a person is comfortable with wearing.

Actually if you think about it, by saying that it's wrong for men to wear skirts, it's kind of a double standard isn't it? Since girls can now wear pants without drawing any flak. After all, pants has historically only been worn by the males. And I supposed that initially, when women started wearing pants, it probably looked weird.

But then again, I don't see any reasons why guys are going to start wearing skirts. Pants are comfortable and convenience so I supposed that's why women started wearing them.

I don't think that it is wrong for men to wear skirts, i mean if they like it, then why not?

However, the common perceptions of the public are that man who wear skirts are gay so maybe guys might want to give it a second thought before deciding on really wearing a skirt in public. But it is not wrong on the whole.

Its not wrong its just nasty to see. The only guys that wear skirts are the scotish (right? i forget) (bagpipe players), and transvestites. Its the persons choice to wear it or not, there is no law against males wearing such attire. its just that different people do have different prespectives.

Alright, firstly...Scottish men wear kilts, and it's traditional Scottish Highland clothing. I'm sorry if it seems overly picky, but it was driving me crazy that it was being called a skirt.

Secondly, I just don't understand why others should dictate what a person does or does not wear. Clothing is a personal choice, a statement of who we are, or how we want to appear to others. I don't believe that the opinion of the public should determine one's clothing. Honestly, out of all the things that you could be finding out about people, does anyone really want to linger only on appearances?
Also, as it has been brought up before, this is quite a double standard. If men "can't" wear skirts, should women stop wearing pants as well? I say that if there are men comfortable enough with their bodies and their sexuality to wear what's considered female clothing, then good for them!
As for preferring only men with good or shapely legs wearing skirts...The same could be said of women. Not all women have great legs either, but that certainly doesn't mean that they shouldn't be able to wear what they want.

Sure, a guy wearing a skirt seems strange and out-of-the-norm in this day and age, but it was just as controversial when women began to wear pants and tuxedoes, or when the glam punk look was in.
Thinking outside of the box and learning to adapt is a necessary skill, whether it applies to clothing choice or foreign policies. We could all be a lot more accepting of others...So, er, yes. If men want to wear skirts, kilts, or dresses, all the more power to them. I'll stop rambling now.

Technically speaking, I dont think there is anything wrong with men wearing skirt. But it really depends on where you come from and you culture. For example, if a Scottish guy comes to Taiwan and wears skirt, people wont say anything because they know its their culture's clothing style. But if a Taiwanese guy himself wears skirt, people will begin to question themselves whether this guy is just being weird or a gay. That's what I think...

Men in skirts are so sexy. Brad Pitt wore a skirt in one movie- Troy.

In Scotland, men wore skirts on important or special events. I don't mind eyeing on sexy hairy legs.

Of course it's not wrong. There's no rule that says only females can wear skirts. It's only weird to the average person because it's uncommon.

tHAT WOULD be really different but some people do so thats okay but just hope you dont do that in front of people! Well, its the inside that counts not the things you wear so its okay just dont try to do it often!

well i won't consider it as wrong, but it's just been in the culture for so long, and when you see a man wearing skirts, you will automatically think it's strange

if you meant skirts like the regular ones women wear, it's not wrong, just weird. but if all men started wearing skirts, it wouldn't be weird anymore. just highly unlikely to happen any time soon.

No I actually don't think so.
Its all due to all this sterotypical thoughts and ideals of what men and women should wear.

Like ladies couldn't wear shorts and pants before, but as mliza said, when everyone started it became normal.

SO yeah, ideally, they shouldn't at the moment because everyone would think of them as sissy, But if no one starts, the thought of it being sissy will continue to exist. Just like, males can't play netball and wear makeup.
