As the topic title says, where have you been before in Europe? Tell me how it was...
Here's my short little list:
Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain (Mallorca), England, Germany, France, Denmark and Switzerland.
From all these places from above, I like France the most. I went to Paris, in the evening it's very beautiful there...very romantic. I also went to the top of the Tour Eiffel, it was amazing! Wish I can go there again when I'm older

Ohhh...youve been to a number of places in Europe too Sin Yun!
Ive been to Spain, Paris, Greece, Venice in Italy, Cyprus, Sweden, Amsterdam, Denmark, Estonia and Norway! Does Turkey count? :?
Ive been on a couple of cruise holidays..one around the Med and one around the Baltic Sea so ive seen many European cities. Its a nice way to travel cos you dont waste an entire week in one place, but spend only 1 day at each destination...and you move on to the next place on the itinery overnight!
My favourite European city - probably Stockholm. Its amazingly pretty. I think i would have loved Paris too, but i didnt enjoy that holiday much. We went down by coach and i hate travelling for too long. I was very young too and i got scared by Maleficient in Eurodisney so i spent most of my time there terrified. I need to go again to see the city properly!

It isn't that much jessca...
I think Turkey isn't a part of the EU yet...right?
jessca
11-08-2003, 08:52 PM
I dont think its part of the EU, but its certainly part of Europe....how did i realise? Galatasary play in the European Cup hehe....
How did you find England?
xJayChoux
11-08-2003, 09:16 PM
 Always thinking about football 'eh?
England...it was fun! Big Ben was interesting...(the kids from the friends of my dad weren't nice, so my holiday was screwed up :-x) The taxis were funny, how you have to open these doors :D.
jessca
11-08-2003, 09:22 PM
Hehe..ive been to London too...very expensive down there hehe...but Big Ben is a must tourist attraction.
The taxis were funny, how you have to open these doors :D.
Dont you normally open doors to get into taxis? :?

My traveling experiences are kinda limited to annual cruises to Stockholm :bleh: (for shopping, mostly) but i really enjoyed my trip to Greece this summer with two of my friends... the view is really stunning there. Portugal was a beautiful place, too.. all this talk bout traveling makes me wanna pack my suitcase and just take a random flight to somewhere!

jessca
11-09-2003, 10:59 AM
Ive never been to Finland. Ive been around Scandinavia...the seas and straits are so pretty...but Finland wasnt on the itinery. :depresse: ...i didnt get to shop much in Stockholm cos we went on a guided tour instead. I got to see the Vasa (i think that was the name fo the ship) and the city hall.
Or did you just went there because you had to go to another plane at the airport

11-09-2003, 08:36 PM
uuh i looove shopping! there are so few shops in Finland... im hoping that mango would come here soon...
are things cheap there btw?
xJayChoux
11-10-2003, 05:13 PM
Cheap? No. It's very expensive...because of the Euros :-x
Let's say, I hated the Euros...but you'll get used to it
Sparkling_Jade
11-10-2003, 08:43 PM
I so know what you mean! with the euoros, EVERYTHING has become more expensive... and i have noticed that i tend to spend more money, because it seems so little now that´s in euros..... like 20 euoros used to be 120 marks, which seemed ALOT to me, but now, 20 euros goes in a flash.... :-x
xJayChoux
11-10-2003, 09:01 PM
Argh...2,20 guilders is 1 euro!!! Euros are expensive...
I don't know...but since the euros came, our economy went "down"...
jessca
11-10-2003, 09:02 PM
There a huge debate still going on about the Britain joining in. Blair is adamant that he wont give the public their vote (cos he knows the majority of us are against it).
Im still unsure whether want to join the Euro but i understand why its important for every country in the EU to share a currency. Its just we're not willing to change from the pound.
xJayChoux
11-10-2003, 09:14 PM
I have this kind of feeling that England always wants to be different from other countries...they don't want to change to euros, they drive at the other side of the road...
(no offense, jessca )

11-10-2003, 09:22 PM

sauerkraut
11-14-2003, 07:17 PM
i don't know what you're talking about. :glug: frankfurt's one of the few great german cities. it might not be the most exciting one, but it definitely has its appeal. i guess beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
ker_ai_teresa
11-16-2003, 03:46 AM
i'm talking about a warm saturday arvo, touring the heart of the city, and the place is almost deserted, bar a couple of tourists.
anywayz, i said it was boring i didn't say it was unattractive. and so i agree, the architecture is quite a wonder. i also learnt from my tour guide that they have a lot of banks...and that's about it.
sauerkraut
11-16-2003, 04:18 PM
no offense really, but despite what ppl might think about frankfurt in general, it defintely does have more about it than banks. sorry, if i sound a little defensive, but i simply love frankfurt. when it comes to german cities, there are only cologne and heidelberg that i like better. :wink2:

Wow...do tell us more!
Ive been to Venice...but not for long. I was in a coach travelling from the airport to the port to board cruise ship. It was a shame i didnt get to look around properly but when we set sail..the views were unbelievable. We were sailing across the breadth of Venice, looking in you could see all the canals and channels...and the way the bridges and streets were built. It was beautiful. :D

who's been to or live in London? the reason i'm asking is coz i'm planning to visit the city erm.....sometime soon (depending on my finances), and thought i'd do a little research. who better to ask than those who have actually been there or live there?
so just tell me things i should know about the city....weather , attractions, where i shouldn't go, dangers, transport.....
thanx if you can help! :)
jessca
01-09-2004, 07:40 PM
Eeeeeee...Teresas coming to England! :bounce: You gotta come up north its nicer!!
Im not saying that just cos i live up north, but cos Londons a very touristy area and that makes it a quite expensive place to visit..though i guess all tourist areas are like that. And theres not that much to see in Newcastle.. :depresse:
About London... :hmm: ...i can barely remember what happened the last time i went. Theres the usual visits...the Castles, Big Ben, the Tower etc...transport, improving due to the congestion charges...but theres buses everywhere...weather...mostly nasty..depends when you want to go really..
Ill have a look in my local library the next time i go for some leaflets etc..and ill see if i can get them sent to you...
ker_ai_teresa
01-10-2004, 03:49 AM
awwwww thanx in advance for the leaflets, Jessca! :hugz:
i'd like to go during your summer so that it's not too cold, so around July-August? but my Lonely Planet guide says that it's very crowded during this time, so perhaps April/May or September/October would be better, anything but full on winter!
i'm still confused tho...you say you live in Newcastle, is that actually inside of London?
also, ppl have told me that England is very expensive  so i'll have to go very budget.
jessca
01-10-2004, 12:57 PM
Its okie hehe..it depends whether i can find any first lol...and coming early Summer or late Summers a good idea too...although our weathers freaky and you can never guarantee when you get a nice clear day with a decent temperature.
Newcastles about...err...600 miles north of London..about a 6hr trip in the car if youre interested... :D
Yeah, Englands a rip off...never go there deliberately to buy clothes or any item..thats why people cross the Channel every Christmas to stock up on alcohol and cigarettes in France... If you plan it right and where you wanna stay though, it shouldnt be too bad. Are you planning on going alone?
ker_ai_teresa
01-11-2004, 06:07 AM
hehe...luckily i'm not planning to go there to shop, i just want to sight-see and have a feel of what London is really like. if i want to shop i'd go to HK!
i also want to go and watch a soccer/football match!!! when i watch it on tv, the atmosphere looks so good, and there's so many ppl!
anywayz, going alone? i'm not sure yet. i mean i've travelled overseas alone b4 and that was fine....well it depends on whether i find anybody interested and who has the money, to go with me. so do you think that it would be safe to go there alone? :?
hmmm, so it seems that Newcastle is actually outside of London....so it's true that you can catch the ferry across to France??? :excited: that would be fun! but you'd need passport as well right?
jessca
01-11-2004, 07:49 PM
Yeah..i guess its pretty safe, its just that i could never travel overseas alone  ..and England is pretty far away from home...
Londons probably the best place for sight-seeing here hehe..and theres always some Japanese tourists you can go join on the top of a double-decker bus for a tour of London hehe..
Yeah..Newcastles no where near London..and to catch the ferry to Calais in France, you would have to go to Dover which i think is 2 hours away from London. And i guess you would need a passport.
Woww...you gotta watch a footie match! And with like 15 clubs to pick from in London, youre bound to get into one hehe...or you could come up to Newcastle..St James Park is famous for its atmosphere you know...
ker_ai_teresa
01-12-2004, 12:39 PM
thanx for trying to help me Jessca! :flowers: if i have any other questions i'll come and bug you! hehe....
yep! football! next to Jay, football is my other obsession! i'm thinking of catching a Liverpool match coz Harry Kewell plays for them....can't wait till i actually get to go there! :excited:
anywayz, sorry bout the change of topic.... so let's continue with the topic of this thread....
the only place i have visited in europe is london. my brothers studied there but i could only visit there for like 3 days, which was nothing! i went to London and shopped around. i went to see Big Ben, the bridge (i forgot the name), Oxford Circus etc...the usual tourist sites...
but it has been my dream to go to europe and study there. but in about 2 months i am going to graduate and FINALLY will be able to go to europe. i will most liekly go to switzerland...has anybody gone there? and i am still pondering on the possibility of going to England who knows... still thinking...so, in about 4-5 months i will be in Europe!!!! then i can go tour around all the cities i have dreamed of and then share with you guys!!!! :D hahaha...then i will be able will have better discussions and tell my experiences, if everything works out and if i have the money to go to these places... let all hope..guess thats all..luvs luvs

i will most liekly go to switzerland...has anybody gone there?
i have been to switzerland a couple of times and i also got some swiss friends. all in all, i'd say that switzerland is an excellent choice. the country's one of the prosperous in europe and i guess it kind of shows. everything's quite neat and nice, even (or maybe especially) the cute little villages. besides, what you basically get is a great mix of three european cultures (german, french and italian). which city do you have in mind? and how long are you going to stay?
p.s.: in case you're looking for more info on switzerland, you might want to check out the following web sites:
http://www.myswitzerland.com/
http://www.about.ch/
i am planning to go to Glion-sur-Montreux..actually i am probably going there for 4-5 years for college. i am going to study hotel and tourism management. uau man, a great mix!! i am already a great mixture, i am taiwanese but was born in brazil. i guess i will have to learn more languages!!! hahaha... have you ever been to Glion? i am os curious and so frightened of where i may end up... and sauerkraut, thnx for the websites!!!! :)

sorry, haven't been there yet. but i can tell from its name that it's probably located in the french part of switzerland. don't worry! as i said, switzerland is a great place. once you get there, you might even never want to go back. :wink2:

I have been to England, Scotland, France, Sweden, Italy, and Switzerland... That was it , I think..
My fav place is of cause Italy. I LOVE Venice, and Rome. When I went to Venice, I walked over a small Venicient style bridge and it was like in the movie :) Everything was like in a movie. The water was turquise blue...:) so lovely. Rome was also a very romantic city. Ppl were friendly, especially guys. ( they are sexy with green eyes! ) Italian food is also delicius, the small pizza shops along the street are good... I miss it now.

Wow...it sounds so beautiful.
I was only in Italy for a while, as i was sailing from Venice on a west-Med cruise. But ill always remember when we left the port. We were on the top deck, and it was a sunny day, with the sea breeze. And you could look into the city and see all the channels, buildings and bridges as we sailed the breadth of the city. It was literally like looking into the past. Id love to go back there properly one day.
Theres just something mystical about Italy, Rome in particular. So romantic.. :D

I have been to Franch, German, Belgium, Netherland, Swiss, Italy, Denmark.
The most favorite place is Italy, I really love this country. It's full of art and architecture. I really wanna go back to Italy again, I wanna see d ceiling of Sistine chaple (I missed it when I went there) I ever met David, I was excited with everything at Italy. And Venice is nice, a bit disappoint with it coz I didn't have chance to sail in gondora. raining and low flooding, so can't sail that time
at least I go to same place as Jay at d colosseum and spanish steps in Italy

Oh, I would LOVE to go to Pompeii some time! I love the ancient Greek and Roman times.
I'm from The Netherlands, and I haven't been to many places, at least not for a very long time:
Belgium: Antwerpen, where we went shopping, just for a day
Germany: Xanten, Keulen, Trier, went with school for some days
France: Paris and Disneyland, for three days
Switserland: can't remember where, but I went there for a week and stayed at a friend's house in the mountains :)
Greece: went with school for nine days and we travelled through whole Greece, one of my favorite trips! We've been to Athens (Akropolis), Olympia (where the original Olympics were held), Korinthe, Delphi, Sparta, and many more.
England: London baby! Three days.

Wow you guys are so well traveled! I've never been to Europe before, but I'm going this year. I'm taking an Italian history class where you study Italy from the Roman Empire on and then you visit Italy over Spring Break. I'm really excited! And from what you guys have said Italy should be wonderful. Many people that I know say that Italy is their favorite place. I'm really looking forward to it!

I heard Italy is beautiful, my brother has recently been to a number of european countries and he says so far the best place he has been to is Prague in the Czec! (hoever you spell it) I wanna go there too!!!!

I went backpacking in Europe for 2 months last year....went to Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Greece, and UK...and my favourite country was Netherlands (not in terms of sightseeing, of cos)...The place is pretty and peaceful, the people are very friendly, and it's the home of MIFFY !!! :-) (I was a bit upset that I didn't end up seeing a lot Miffy things there...I went to Utrecht just for it, since it's Dick Bruna's hometown.. ).
I also love Italy, France and Germany. There's so much to see :excited: Paris has the best museums...I got a three-day museum pass and went the Louvre three times..hehe
you guys/gals living in Europe are so lucky...I'm so envious..
Katie23

Utrecht! I live only 20 min with the bus from there!!! Dick Bruna has been to the restaurant where my dad used to work many times, in the town where I live! Where are you from Candy? US? Surprised to see Tne Netherlands as your favorite, but it also makes me a bit proud, haha. Miffy is called Nijntje (sounds a bit like Nine-tje) here by the way, which is how many children here call a rabbit (in Dutch: konijn).

I wonder how much is a ticket to Netherlands, hm
Anyways, getting a visa is a really huge problem here! they can just refuse to give you a visa and not give any explanation :(

I'm sure you'll get to go to China. Shanghai is awesome! my fave city after Moscow!
you like Edison? i have this movie with him, forgot the name, it takes place in Japan at first, he meets the sister of his brothers girlfriend and falls in love with her. but the girl is rich and has a heart disease and they are like not made for each other, but in end they stay together.really nice movie, and the only one i saw with Edison. he's so cute there :)

well, you're still young, you have time to learn any languages you want :).
In your age its' really easy. now i start noticing that for me it gets harder to memorize new words and stuff. learning chinese was much easier, i think. well, maybe it's just that i start learning it long ago and forgot how hard it was

right?

Lol, Sinny, knowing mandarin doesn't know being Asian. You know Cantonese, which i don't know at all! It's like another language for me! I can't understand a single word in Cantonese, except those who are similar to mandarin. and i know how to say Hello in Cantonese (thanx to Jecka! heehee)
yay! Sinny's learning korean :wink2:
Komapsimnida - thank you (usual thank you)
Kansahamnida - thank you (usually is a polite way to say thank you and it also can be used when you're thanking lots of people at the same time)
mianhamnida - sorry (usual sorry)
chwesonghamnida - sorry (you say it when you did smth really bad and apologize for it)

:? no offense, but looking at these long words makes me wonder... doesn't it take ages to say anything at all? i mean saying hello in english takes about 1 second and 5 letters, but in korean...? :hmm:
jessca
12-10-2004, 08:30 PM
^i guess with korean, the more effort it takes, the more sincere it is. certainly when talking to elders, you have to be more polite (ahnyong hae se yo instead of just ahnyong)
weee...Patya's teaching korean...
*quite obviously still hyper* but i always get confused with these:
unnie (big sister)
dongseng (someone younger than you)
oppa (girl's big brother)
hyung (the boys term)
are they correct? :? and poumonim for parents hehe...and my favourite..hwaiting! XD
edit - can we use mian hae for sorry too?
Shanhaigirl
12-10-2004, 08:44 PM
lol, yeah, teaching along with learning myself, haha
unnie - girl's big sister
nuna - boy's big sister
not sure that you can say mian hae for sorry, 'cause the original verb is mianhada and you transform it into mianhamnida or mianhaeyo. but i'll ask my teacher :-)
well, i guess if you can say sarang hae, you can say mian hae too, but i think you can say it only to a close friend or a relative,'cause it's not really polite.
and yeah, korean is such a long language, lol! when i read our texts it seems that a sentence never ends, haha

jessca
12-10-2004, 10:17 PM
youre my dongseng, and im your unnie.. =P so unnie works the same as oppa, but for a sister:D
but if a boy was calling an elder sister, it would be nuna. and if he was calling an elder brother, it would be hyung.
eg. minwoo would say eric hyung, i would say eric oppa.
hope that didnt confuse you even more.. and i hope thats right.. :glug:

hi everyone, i'm from london and everyone in this thread seem to have been or are going to london.
well, are you going to london soon?need some information? :-)
first and foremost, chinatown is an EXPENSIVE place. :worry: there are jay products but are ridicoulously expensive. china town is small with lots and lots of resturants. there are a few supermarkets and a few cd shops.
Central London itself has many places to see and also many places to shop. but again, it IS expensive. thats if you go for shops at harrods or selfridges or John Lewis. other minor shop slike hmv, HnM or claires accesories are ok. :shifty:
the weather at the moment is dry but will get warmer in june. they predict that there might be a summer wave.so if you hate sun, best to avoid london and its busy roads and streets.
as for places to go, there are museums and other places like the london eye or big ben. there are loads of park you can go to to have a picnic.
the people are friendly. they are not racist and do not have any kind of racist hate towards a certain group. you will find all sorts of people there. i think 1 week is enough in london if you are planning to go around it all day. but, ifyou want to really spend time in muesems or just want to enjoy london life for a while, 2 weeks.
sorry, going back to the thread, i have been to france(i thought they were quite racist :rasp: ), belgium(pretty)Spain,(lovely, friendly people)and itlay(itlaian version of london).

i also went to france as well and the people were rude and racist as well, so you're not alone on that =/ although paris was gorgeous, the people makes me kinda not want to go back.

I love Europe!:D
I've been to England, Ireland, Switzerland, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Netherlands and Belgium. I long to go to Spain, may be one day.
My favourite would be Ireland. It's a wonderful place with fairy-tale like landscape and all those old buildings made of stones. England was only a brief visits of 2 days and unfortunately was coupled with the bleak weather. I couldn't really enjoyed the moment but hopefully I went back there when I have another chance.

yeh.. i agree.. France was very racist.. i went to Disneyland Paris for a school trip and people started staring at me and laughing or something.. and i think that's gona be the last time i go there.. and the only place in europe that i have been to is France since i like going to places in Asia more..
i haven't been around in europe much, but i have seen metz in france, luxembourg, rome, florence, pisa, sicily, prague, fuerteventura, croatia and hungary (as a child), kopenhagen, moscow and st. petersburg (i think that still counts as europe) and, since i live in southern germany, austria. i would love to see paris and london, though
