I have been doing an adveristment unit in my Composition and Language class and all of a sudden it has come to my attention...uhh advertisments...yeah they are taking over. But when will it stop?
I watched a documentary on advertisments from primetime. Its alarming! Some of the advertisments don't even make sense.
Now ad agencies are trying to find "new ways" to appeal their product. One is this new "voice mechine" I saw on the news they put it in a bookstore to test out. This girl was reading a book when all of a sudden she hears a voice..."Do you want to kill someone?" The girl freaked out and ran out of the store..the ad was for a new detective book ....but she did not stick around to find out.
Some of the craziest ads I have seen was when I went out to buy tea. And you know those cardboard things they put around the cup? Well this was around my cup:

I didn't even know what Rozerem was based on the ad. I had to actually go online to find out it was a sleeping pill. But is this really the place for a sleeping pill ad? Around protecting someones hand from a hot beverage (most likely COFFEE which helps people NOT sleep...)?
I am interested in hearing other peoples view on the matter. What are your experiences with advertisments?

Lol i cracked up laughing reading your post, your right ads are taking over.
There is this ad on TV which advertises Mentos, but for some reason they just have a guy with nipples the size of toothpicks. He uses them to do everything, from catching a freezbie to pressing a button on a lift. Has the world come to a end? What does large nipples how to do with mints.. lol
watch it here: http://www.stupidvideos.com/video/commercials/Nipply_Mentos_Ad/

HarmonyCloud, this is just me stepping in to say that if you intended the thread to be "share your weird advertising experiences", then this thread would belong in the social lounge and i can move it there, because there really isn't anything to debate in your first post and your title isn't clear.
if you could revise it and edit though, that would be great. like a discussion about how far the media has intervened in our lives and where it could go next or what are the pros and cons of the situation instead of simply talking about strange ads.
i'm not sure if i make sense, so if you have a question, feel free to PM me.

Yes. advertisements is taking over. You know why? Because the company can gain money from the advertisement. Let say you have a cup, the advertisement will pay the cup company for making the advertisement, in the other way , the cup company earn money. So the company like advertisement alot.
And in the highway in Malaysia, you can find alot of advertisment, a big logo showing some product or even Cinema show. This is to attract WE to and support them.
Even if you surf through the web, you can find lots of pop-up advertisment too.
Advertisement is ok for me, but sometimes if there is too much advertisement in the web, I will feel like not visit that web again, because sometimes advertisment is quite anoying.

well, yes, i think the general consensus with pretty much anyone would be that ads are taking over....
they really are getting everywhere!!! and they are getting more ridiculous, which many ppl find disgusting, for example Ginuwine's example. his nipples arnt toothpick's theyre more like 5cm pencil-thickness nipples... its absolutely seedy. and then they depict the girls finding it very attractive....yuck!
and then, there is the 'sex sells' sorta thing...in today's world where it is actually true, it is sorta sad to see that this is what the human mind responds best to. but then again, this could be linked to human subconscious primal instincts, that of reproduction...or it could be plain lust. who knows?

Oh I HATE ads!! I have to agree with shinjay, they have gone too far. And you get pretty tired of those stupid pop-ups on you screen when you try to surf the web.

As long as companies sell out money, ads will be here. Consumers tend to not pay attention to them. But some do. Kinda like tv ads, some care, some don't. Thank god TiVo came along.
All about revenue and profit. These companies make the most out of that little ad.
And aren't those ad-filled coffee holders cheaper to make?

Haha...Singapore mandarin dramas are famous for having lots of written in ads nowadays.Like if Mcdonalds' one of the sponsers you'll keep seeing the characters having their food for their meals...They even go to extremes like 1 to 2 second closeups of jewelery and products like shower foams...Horrid...

I think the main issue i have with adverising taking over is the effect it has on small children.
In the UK the ad companies obviously target the breaks in kids shows with ones for toys and fat food.
It peaks around x-mas time of course, and also during the holidays when kids are in watching tv. There has been a move lately by the goverment to ban advertising of fast food during children's shows which is a good step forward in my opinion, but they still havent got it right as the article below shows:
http://www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk/news/headlines/display.var.1099453.0.cheese_is_unhealthy_but_chip s_arent.php
foods caught by the junk food ban include Marmite, Jaffa cakes, takeaway chicken nuggets, sausages, bacon rashers, pizza, hamburgers and chocolate.
Foods that are not considered too unhealthy and that can therefore be advertised include currant buns, frozen oven chips, chocolate flavoured milk and lasagne ready meals.
as you can see - they have no idea what they are doing really. :S
as entridenied mentioned, product placement is on the rise, and for advertising its defiitely the way forward as far as they are concerned. With a film comes all the branding and extras they can give away and for the film there is the sponsorship it needs to pay the high fees of the stars, the crew and the executives. The audience get sold an ideal along with the film, one that the advertisers couldnt provide on thier own if they tried. A film audience is a captive audience.
one can only wonder whan subliminal advertising will be encouraged, i'm sure its on the rise surreptitiously.
'orange' by rupert thompson is a great novel about advertising. Creeps me out alot too.
JG Ballard wrote a good short story to do with subliminals
the film 'They Live' is also good for it and is really a social commentry about advertising and greed taking over the world.
'how to get ahead in advertising' is a dark comedy.
in the end - you just have to be aware that you are always being 'sold' something. How many times have you seen what an idol of yours wears, uses drinks etc and gone 'i want one too' ????

Well, yes sometimes I feel that advertisements are taking over & sometimes I wish there were no commercials so I can watch my program with ease. But what if you own a business oneday & you decide to advertise your business.
You have to or else your business isn't going to make it right. Then again there's word of mouth advertising. But you need some kind of marketing & advertising to be successful & draw in business first.
What I can't stand is when major corporations advertise too much.Such as cigarette companies who advertises everywhere when people are trying quit. But for small or minor businesses.I have no problem with them.^^

yes advertisements are taking over, everywhere there are ads. just look at the movie "Josie and the Pussycats" is all about advertisement and hidden messages like in the movie of using music to mind control teenagers to buy the newest trends. then there are some that are so useless and pointless that they work, like that gum commercial that got nothing to do with sexual desire. there's also those hella expensive commercials for the super bowl games. that show you how much the worth an advertisement is to the product company. crazy, 2.6 million dollars for a 30 seconds commercial..
but then without advertisements, it's hard to spread the news. but then sometimes they just cross the line....darn those creative people...made me buy something shiny:drool:... that i dont need...arg cant resist...o_o....
yeah advetisement are really taking over the world. advertisement nowadays are very heavy. they can make their product looks really good and better than other same product. advertisement make we want to buy their product...
like perfume, cosmetics, even kitchen appliances for our mothers and beauty health care like something they said anti ageing. my mother really like that product. and really advertisement really taking over our world....
