View Full Version : [Random debate of the whenever month] To shave or not to shave?

Since we didn't have a monthly debate last month cause I ran out of debate topics, I thought I could start a topic that I've always wondered about.

For guys:
why do you shave? Why do you spend the however many minutes each morning or every other morning or once every week standing in front of a mirror shaving? Do you think it makes you look better? More attractive? More respectable?

What do you think of other men with beards? Do you think they look good/bad? Do you wish you have one?

And what do you think about women who shave or not shave? Is it hot? Is it not?

For girls:
do you shave? if you do: why do you shave? if you don't: what do you think about shaving? and would you ever shave?

What do you think about other girls who do or do not shave? Do you think it makes them more attractive when they do or more attractive when they don't?

What do you think about men who do not shave? Do you think that they look better or worse (don't think about unruly beards, but trim and well maintained beards / goatees)?

And for everyone:
what do you think about society's standards about shaving? Do you think it's unavoidable? Or do you think it's gross because it goes along with the idea that woman have to look like prepubescent teens and men have to look more and more effeminate? Why do you think the practice of shaving became the norm in North America? Do you find yourself unattracted to men or women who are NOT the norm? Why do you think you feel that way if you do?

If you are from Asia, is it the norm for women you know to shave? What about men? Same with if you're from Europe or Australia or wherever else...

------------------------------------------

So go debate. Follow the rules. Off topic posts = deletion.

I personally like to have a slightly scruffy look, as it makes my face seem less rounded? Over the last few months though, I have been shaving regularly because my girlfriend thinks I look cuter without facial hair; also she complains that it is not comfortable to rub against while we cuddle. I believe that a well-trimmed beard or goatee look perfectly respectable, and equally attractive to a shaved faced. *shrugs*.

I only spend a minute or less shaving - usually on a daily basis, unless I sleep over at Jen's place (every two days or so).

I think that men with long beards look unattractive (either short or nothing). It's extremely disgusting when they eat and food falls into/onto their beard (or it dips into the food).

I think that it is sexier when a woman has shaved (hairless in general), as well as being a sign of a socially-fashionable person - as they take time in their appearance. I'm not going to say that a woman should always be hairless - on dares (and because Jen likes it when I am also fully hairless ._.), I've found that shaving takes a long time. It is impractical to shave too often. Yup. +respect for girls who fight body hair.

I've actually found that in America, a slightly "grunge" punk-street look (ie - scruffy goatee) is coming back into fashion (at least for music).

I don't find myself unattracted to women who have body hair (within reason), although I still find a pair of smooth legs in a bikini to be irrisistable.

more later - gtg, sorry

:D Funny comment. And I agree!

Anyways..well. To start off, I think that men look more attractive without facial hair. Well, a goatee could be cute on some guys, but then, as KendoTiger mentioned, when you cuddle with your bf, it kinda itches and stings. I'm just more interested in pretty boys with no facial hair. ^^

Ok..I do shave. I mean, I find pubic hair extremely...*can't find the right word...And well, when you're in a swimming suit, you can attract guys easily with tanned and shaved leggs. ....:brows:
It depends on every person's mind about shaving. I think that I don't really care if I see another girl unshaved...because they have their own opinions and I respect that. But I do agree that shaved legs, armpits, etc. makes a woman look more attractive.

I think that shaving is unavoidable though...because somehow, you're boyfriend could find that extremely disgusting if you have a bunch of...hair. And he might ask you to shave.

oops...i gotta go to the movies..gonna be late..><

do you shave? if you do: why do you shave? if you don't: what do you think about shaving? and would you ever shave?

I shave but only underarm. maybe it comes from genes, I dunno, but I don't have a lot of unnecessary hair (pubic, legs) and it would probably be scraping dead skin cells more or less if I actually shaved those areas .. eww ...
but if I ever (Heaven forbid) do have to shave those areas, I'd do it or get it waxed (I think that's more convenient for legs)

What do you think about other girls who do or do not shave? Do you think it makes them more attractive when they do or more attractive when they don't?

it's perfectly okay if you don't NEED to shave, but if the girl has legs that look like a guys and she still doesn't shave, I'm sorry, but that's just GROSS. I think it's more attractive if you do shave.

What do you think about men who do not shave? Do you think that they look better or worse (don't think about unruly beards, but trim and well maintained beards / goatees)?

Personally, I like guys who shave completely! But I'm more into the pretty boy type like sam_ho ^_^
goatees are okay, if extremely short, but like sam_ho said, it can be scratchy and uncomfy when you want to cuddle with your bf. also, I think it makes the guy look old and just a little sinister XD

Why do you think you feel that way if you do?

society's standards about shaving (in the US at least) are a little over the top. In fact, most people in the US probably have bad skin and bad hair because they shave and wash their hair almost everyday XD at least I know my hair is terrible

I think the practice of shaving became the norm in North America because people like to be able to wear skimpy spaghetti straps and bikinis while still looking like civilized people and not monkeys XP

Hmm ... I think increased attraction to a guy that shaves is that this person actually takes time to do it and maintain their personal hygiene. it's almost the same thing as house shopping and you usually choose the one with the better maintained lawn and without fungi dripping from the corners.

That's my opinion, thanks.

For men, I would suggest you shave. Yes most of the girls hate boys with beard and moustache, imagine how disgusting when the men kiss a girl with beard
Men can shave their leg if the hair is longer then 3-5cm. And my leg's hair is born in short, so I dont need to care this, just that my beard only.

Another thing, I dont feel like men with beard is very attractive, but if men with nice hair and dressing that is more attractive then any other things.
Yes, I feel better and comfortable after I shaved every morning.

Now for girl, I dont think girl with hair is sexy and hot, as long as the hair dont grow so long in the hand it's ok. But for the leg, make sure not longer then 1cm for me. You know girls leg is preety attractive when you wear mini skirt or skirt.
So, I believe girls who shave is sexy and hot. :wink2:

Personally, I prefer to shave off any facial hair because I like a smooth clean face. Might be just me but I don't really like the feeling of having facial hair. The only way I would keep facial hair is through a goatee or a soul patch. I think shaving off your facial hair makes you look more attractive but having a goatee is just as good. Since I am still young compared to the rest of the male population, I think that those with beards look bad. As for girls who shave, I think it is acceptable and prefer those that do shave. When a girl shaves her legs and armpits, it makes her seem prettier/ sexier. I'll take a girl with a shaved leg over a girl who doesn't shave anyday.

To be honest, i never wanted to shave but my school makes me shave.

i like the rustic look but not a very long beard like how bikies have it.

men shouldn't shave any other part of their body other than their face.

Shaving makes you look well groomed and respectable. i spend about 10 minutes shaving each week. when its holidays i grow mine :D

I wasn't planning on answering this. But I saw ginuwine's post.

Ginuwine- I have to agree with you, I don't think men should be shaving off hair anywhere else but their face. In my opinion, it would look a bit sick if they shave pubic hairs.I hate for a man to spend more time in a mirror then I do. It means he is in love with himself, I'm sure all that shaving would take a while. I also like the rustic look too, I love when a man gets a five-o-clock shadow on his face. I don't really like men with too much of a baby face.

I shave everyday, because I guess it's a mentality thing, as well as an aesthetic thing for me. I'd feel pretty strange going out in skirts or shorts, with hair all over my leg. And besides I play basketball and have to wear singlets. Can you imagine if a girl playing basketball didn't shave? I'd scare everyone watching everytime I raise my arms to take a shot.

I don't mind if other girls don't shave, unless their legs start to resemble a guy's. There's a thing called personal hygeine, and it's just really strange if it looks like a forest is growing on a girl's legs.

I think it's becoming more common for guys to shave now. In Australia, because rugby players have to wear shorts, a lot of them shave or wax so they won't look too hairy in games.

I feel kind of dirty and unclean if I don't shave, and also I couldn't pull off a rugged look, because I have "the baby face," or so I am told.

oooh. i realized i forgot to reply to this topic.
it's almost the end of the month.

i don't really care if the man i'm dating shaves or doesn't shave as long as he's not growing a moustache or a goatee. i don't mind if he tries it out, because some guys can pull it off, but it's a big NO if it looks ugly. beards do get really scratchy when you try to kiss him, but i wouldn't want him to dictate how i cut my hair so why should i dictate how he shaves his beard? we know each other's preferences, and we respect it, but we do not have to adhere to it exactly. i think a man looks good with a little bit of stubble, it makes him more attractive in a sense, but it depends on a certain type of man to pull it off. really though, if he is a fantastic person, it doesn't matter whether he shaves or doesn't shave.

for me personally, i know my boyfriend's preference for body hair, which is that there is none, and i follow it sometimes when i feel like it and when i'm lazy i don't. it's one of those "whenever i get around to it" things and that's fine by me if it makes him happy, but it's more of a preference than a demand.

i don't really understand why there is an obsession with no body hair though. it's natural, it's supposed to be there. i guess that sometimes it does "interfere" when it comes to kissing or accidentally getting scratchy beard in the eye or against your neck. and we all have preferences, so i guess that's a good thing.

because someone mentioned it, i'll mention it.
i like it when guys shave their pubes. if you want girls to be hairless, then you better at least trim down there.

Ginuwine
11-26-2006, 05:36 AM
so you are saying that guys should shave their pubic hair?
if you are, i'd have to disagree with you. Hair is natural, some peopel choose to have some and some don't. Your right it's really up to the person, it's a preference.

once again, it's a preference. i like it when guys shave it, some girls don't like it. all i'm saying that in a relationship i'm with, if a guy wants me to shave there, then he'd better shave there as well. there is none of this only one person shaves the other person does nothing, because if he wants me to adhere to his preferences, he should be prepared that i have ones of my own. i just think it looks cleaner and there's less stuff to get in the way.

shave. i don't think you can get enough wax strips to clean up down there without seriously injuring something. but then i don't know, maybe some guys do wax. with girls it's easier to wax like with brazilians since there's more room there for the wax to go, and you tweeze the rest.

Well, i'd trying just pulling a single public hair and the pain was just unbearable for like five minutes and it goes all red. So I advise to men to not pull public hair out, If you wax your public hair, i'd say you will be in serve pain for 2 weeks or more.

Sugar&Spice

Ginuwine- I agree with you. Pubic hair is natural, and I really don't think that men should shave down there. As long as they don't stink, its fine with me.

I think that people put too much emphasis on pubic hair. It would gross me out to see a man with no hair down there. Like some kind of naked mole rat or something like that. And as a female, I wouldn't want to go get a wax, so that a stranger can handle my pubic hair for me. Someone that I don't know, taking a look at somehing that they shouldn't?! Kind of freaks me out, to hae a stranger handle my secret places. Other females may disagree. But to me, that is my viewpoint.

for me,

when a guy keeps long beard and moustaches, it's awfully disgusting to see the hair dangling at their faces. But if they leave a little stubble [ onli if it suits their looks ] , i find it nice.

As for girls, i don't really shave because i dun have much hair to shave around anyway ...

Overall, shaving depends on each individual's personal hygenie and image.

Well i think a guy definitely has to shave. I'm not attracted to guys with who has hair on any part of their face.
For me, I don't really shave. Not that i need to. I'm still young =D

On Guys: I like clean shaven men, there are many pro's to this.
1. Most Asian guys look better shaved. Caucasians can get away and look sexy sometimes with some stubble but asians can't, it just makes them look seedy and unclean to me.
2. You don't get pricked to death and obtain a rash while kissing your bf if he's shaved.

I don't really expect men to rid themselves of underarm hair or pubic hair etc. That stuff doesn't really bother me. I also don't expect them to shave their legs just because i do- haha that's sexual inequality, but i don't get bothered by it.

For Girls I think shaving your legs, pubic area is all a matter of choice. I wouldn't stare at someone horrified if i saw some hairy legs on the street. However, due to the circumstances i've been brought up in, unshaved underarm hair is SUCH a put-off. I just find it unhygienic and i rarely see it in the first place. One of the maths teachers in my school didn't shave her underarm hair because of her feministic values i think... i still wouldn't go that far.

For some reason my earlier post was deleted. Not by me. But I was complimenting you on your shaving techniques. Its nice when guys have baby mustache hair. That is a nice look for alot of guys.:wink2: lol

Just another note that I forgot to add. Men who have beards, and they are so long that it hits their chest. That is kind of gross. And I hate when they get food caught in it.
