Well, I'm not Singaporean but I'm from Malaysia and the climates are the same. I don't like hot and humid weather either and I like it here in the US because it has four seasons and I love the snow! However, I think Singapore is a nice country to live in. It's so clean! And the people are so civil. :)

I have a few friends in Singapore and I've been to Singapore a few times to visit them when I was back in Malaysia. They're so nice! And then of course, there's this guy I had a crush on. I met him online. So when I went to visit my other friends in Singapore, I met him in person too. He was such a gentleman. My other friends are all awesome too. Anyways, everytime I was in Singapore, I've had such a great time! So yeah, I have a good impression of Singapore and Singaporeans. I'm biased!

Guess after spending like 16 years of my life in Singapore I'm kinda used to it. Actually I would like to stay overseas for a few years or so? But i'll come back eventually this is my home afterall. Thought that it would be a great experience to live overseas. :)

What are everyone's definitions of "quitter" and "stayer"?

To me, a quitter is one who denounces his/her citizenship and dismisses all kinds of policies, choosing to seek greener paradise where they can live as they like, and how they wish.

A stayer would be someone who will remain, even in bad times, and selflessly help our nation rebuild and go up strong again. He/she might reject certain policies, but accepting them indicates that he/she views them as solutions to current problems. He/she will stay, because this is home. And they won't leave home even if walls are crumbling because whatever they have had, it was only made possible because they have this place to call home.

i will surely stay lah.........coz i will feel that i am an outsider if i migrate to other countries .... since Singapore is my homeland.

11-07-2003, 06:18 PM
Gosh, was I glad to see that the stayer number was greater in % than for the quitter one. 'phew'

So S'pore has a future!(in that majority of the people still believe in staying rather than quitting... at least it's shown by this poll anyways) Let's not be swayed by the so-called 'pressurising environment'. Everyone can survive provided they work hard. And don't think other countires have it easy too. Survival of the fittest applies to all environments.

So let's go forward S'pore! (Marikita rakyat Singapura sama sama menuju.... :drunk: )

hey skylark.. i'm glad to see the stayer nos bigger too but still there are only 10 votes so far!! ( at least when i voted there was only 10) so it is not really an accurate representation of what people really think don't you think??

anyway honestly i would want to stay in singapore.. cos it's my homeland.. it may not be the perfect place on Earth to stay in but it's where my friends and family are and i feel an attachment towards my country.. i know that among my friends although they don't outrightly declare they love singapore i know that deep down inside they do feel proud to a certain extent.. i think with singaporeans they have a latent national pride.. they might criticise the government and certain aspects of singaporan life but i think many are still stayers ( ok i might sound a little idealistic here)

besides i think most of the people who say they will leave singapore are probably the idealistic sort who believe that life's definitely better overseas which may not necessarily be true.. there's always other issues like discrimination and assimilation into society to deal with.. in fact i think it may be even harder to pack up your bags and leave than to stay behind...

I love Singapore.....

We may be small, but we pack a big puch...... I love everything about here, and I think I would be lost if I leave here. I would like to study in US for a couple of years, for my post-graduate degree, but I want to come back.... I want to see the world, but here is home.... :)

Well, this is the place where I can confidently say 'This is my home!'. I don't think I would be able to leave my families, friends and all the memories behind. They mean too much to me.

i'll definitely stay in singapore throughout my entire life man. unless i gotta go study overseas or something la. but other than that i've never ever thought of migrating. i think that singapore's got the best environment around. even though our crime rates are kinda high and our country's damn small and our education system is damn stressful. singapore's like still the best to me. cuz we dont have fights going on everyday and we're a country which believes in multi racial. which really rocks la. hehe. but if i could i'll change the education system. haha. and my family's in singapore. my friends everyone i love is in singapore. and singapore's got one of the best Governments in the World.[well thats my opinion la :)] we not some corrupted country. so i'll definitely stay in singapore. i love my country k! :shiny:

To me, it appears that to be a "quitter", you have to migrate, and if you do migrate, one of the reasons would be overseas education?

even though our crime rates are kinda high
cuz we dont have fights going on everyday
Something's just not right about these two statements. Care to explain?

No, you can study overseas without giving up your citizenship. And what matters is not whether you leave for study overseas but, after you finish your studies, do you return to Singapore?

In my definition, quitters are people who had taken the best advantage given to Singaporean citizens, but take the first flight out when something happens to Singapore. They are also those that give up the Singaporean citizenship for green pastures. The stayers are those who think of Singapore as home, and when something happens to Singapore, no matter where they are, they will fly back to Singapore, and fight whatever challengers head on with the rest of the Singaporeans.

It doesn't matter if you pursuit your studies overseas, or take up a position overseas. It boils down to a question, if your country needs you, would you give up everything you currently have, to answer to this need?

Personally, I know the answer to this question. YES. :yeah: Because without Singapore, I am nothing. I can go to other countries, but here is where all my memories are, my childhood is spent here, anywhere else, I will only be second class. So I am staying here...... :lolabove:

A stayer is one who helps to build the nation and contribute to the society.

A quitter is a whiner who complains about everything - the government's too oppressive, the cost of living's too high, work and study's too stressful - basically the grass is definitely greener on the other side type of attitude. Need not be overseas (coz' other countries may not necessarily want such a useless bum). The person just refuses to take charge of his own life and improve his situation. And sadly, we often see examples of such people in the ST Forum every day.

The people maketh the country. We are Singapore. I was born here, I will fight here and I will die here. This is Home.

Though it's really true that the cost of living in Singapore IS high...
In North America you can buy a new car for S$10,000...
In Singapore you can buy the same car for at least S$100,000.
And you still have the COE and Road Tax.

Anyway, about crime rate... I don't think it's that high compared to other countries.. I think I read somewhere that it was one of the top 3 lowest crime rate places in the world? You don't have people robbing banks here right? Usually it's just pretty small crimes... I think Singapore is pretty safe..

And I don't think I would want to go overseas for an education... Singapore is fine.... I would really like to study here...

I love Singapore! :)

In Singapore you can buy the same car for at least S$100,000.
And you still have the COE and Road Tax.
You really have to look at how you interpret this trend.

Land is so scarce in Singapore. We need to allocate land for residential, commercial, industrial, recreational, water catchment, parks, nature reserves, etc. We only have limited space to build our roads and expressways, and if we have cars that go for as little as the amounts you have quoted, each family might end up having two or three cars.

Do some arithmetic and obtain a projected car population with respect to our population (~4.5 million). Let's say out of 9 Singaporeans, 2 own a car. This is already a very conservative estimate, but yet, this gives a car population of 1 million.

How could WE possibly have that number of cars on the roads? As if the traffic situations aren't bad enough at certain places, at certain times. It's not like we could build roads and tunnels as and when we please. So to work around this restriction, the only way would be to restrict the number of cars we have on the road. And to do just that, we need to exact high prices for our cars.

The road taxes are inevitable for car owners, so let's not talk about it. Even if car prices are high, there are still filthy rich people who can afford them. That's where the COE scheme comes in. The number of COEs is fixed for each month, and therefore the number of new cars each month are controlled. It also "evens" out the distribution of the COEs so that more people have a chance of putting in winning tenders.

How could you even compare the prices of cars in US and other places, if you don't consider other factors in the first place?

though many have been complkaining and although more and more are getting discontented w singapore.. i guess we all have to remember how far the nation has traveeled in just 38 short years..

for the past 30+ reas.. all have been goping through a good time till the stage where singaporeans now take what we have for granted..(ugly but true).. people always complain bout topics such as rules and regulations and taxes and how the place is run and all, but have to remember that no govt will please all and we would not have had been in our current position as a nation had we not had all these in place...

so now when the nation is going thru a downward cirve, people starts to voice out and at times mit gets a little irrational.. people always compre what they pay in terms of taxes and standard of living with undeveloped or developing countries.. but just have to bear in mind that there are many other countries which has way higher taxes and a higher standard of living..

But travelling and imigrating is different....
Doesn't matter if you are slow or fast..... you can be a CEO, hawker, or a road sweeper.... what matters is, will you stay in singapore to fight for her, if she is in trouble?

If it is yes, then you are not a quitter.....

Basically, i still think that this is the best place. Compare to other places, at least we don't really have natural disasters and stuff like that.
moreover, this is really where i belong... *at least that's what i feel.
abt the fast pace here... i guess, we still can take a break when we have the ability... so why leave...
this is home, where all my relatives, friends, even enemies *who make lives more enjoyable at times* are... i guess, i may travel, may work in other countries but when i need a place to rest my feet and soul, i'll always remember this little island country of mine...

have been to countries such as US..
and i feel no matter how powerful the country.. how beautiful.. how much free speech they have.. and so on and so forth.. singapore is still the place to be..
US despite their immense power and money.. many parts of their country lie in saddening states.. the state in some parts of US are unthinkable of the US.. and i think to myself.. im so lucky to have a government that cares and has the ability to look into our needs and to provide abundantly for all.. i appreciate the cleanliness of singapore and i now understand why we are called the garden city and tourists alwayz say we have a really clean country..

and tho there are many things i wld like to change abt singapore.. like the education system or the graciousness of singaporeans, i think this is the place to be..
i wld study abroad.. mayb even work abroad.. but my heart wld definitely stay forever in singapore..

therefore as beautiful and amazing which ever country is.. nothing will make me leave this little red dot named singapore..

In the past, I would definitely said yes I want to migrate to other countries but now I realised I’m not so sure. Part of me still wants to go aboard but part of me isn’t so sure can I live there for the rest of my life.
Maybe I can work there or do a stint there and then make up my mind. After all, my family and friends are all here.
But I do think that Singapore’s pace is too fast for me. I need time to time and reflect and not just do, do, do.

Well, u have to move to different parts of the world and live there for some time to be fair....perhaps after a while you will find the spot that u will love to live in for different goals and directions... for example, find a place to marry the locals and bring up children, place to find fulfilling work, to retire comfortably, etc...
Everyone will find their sweet spot if they really travel around enough, not necessarily in SG...
