Excerpt from Sunday Life! article "MTV Asia Bagus" on January 26, 2003, by Tommy Wee (I left out parts non Jay-related):

Jay Chou, Donita Rose and Avril Lavigne went for the Chinese look. Taiwanese R&B prince Chou said of his black tracksuit embroidered dragon motifs: “I wanted a Chinese design. I got someone to design this.”

Speak Mandarin Award:
Every presenter and winner spoke English, or tried to, from Chinese band Yu Quan to Korean boyband j.T.L. Jay Chou, however, was so cool about his non-mastery of English that he did not try to speak it at all. He just gave his thank-you speech in Mandarin.

Most Flattering:
When asked whether Blue would want to work with Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, member Simon Webbe joked: “He might just kick out asses and say, ‘Oh, you’re singing the wrong note.’” Chou had earlier performed his gongfu-inspired song, Dragon’s Fist, with a troupe of pugilists, in his characteristic mumbly manner. [I prefer to call it rap…]

Most Overgrown Adolescents:
Among the journalists crammed in the press room and watching the show on a projected screen, two Hongkong journalists stood out. They shrieked and screamed whenever Jay Chou, F4 and Korean boyband j.T.L. appeared on the screen. When an Indonesian band was ushered into the room, one of the two dismissed them in Cantonese: “Don’t know anything about them and don’t care, because Jay is playing now.”

Most Like Hero The Movie:
Asked by an Indonesian reporter on what he would [say to] inspire youths who are interested in music, Jay Chou offered this philosophical bon-mot: “Music is like drinking water. Everyone old and young needs it.” [I'm sure the quote in Mandarin doesn't sound this corny]

Oh how cool is that? Jay winning best Taiwanese artist. Does anyone have pictures of the 2nd Asia award? I wanna see how Avril Lavigne dressed. She usually just wears the same outfit over and over. Even at one MTV award in US. People say she looks like Britney Spears, and she hates Britney. Its kinda funny actually.

avril bought her chinese top at chinatown... one of the heritage places in spore. it's really happening over there now.. becos of the cny season. many ppl queueing for 'ba gua'!!!! (bbq pork)

i thought it ws pretty cool of him to do that
most people have the urge to follow that masses
it's great that he can just do (or speak) what's comfortable for him

oops. i'm completing my journalism course this year
i have a feeling i'll end up like those two journalists
only more hysterical :) lol

yeah, it's really corny haha
but jay tends to have a tendency to make corny comments like this when it comes to music
did he not say somewhere that he will "rather die w/o music"
jay would be happy to know he got an award associated with his idol jet lee though haha

Okay, this is TOTALLY BAD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at a chalet during the broadcast of MTV Asia on Saturday. My friend said she has recorded it so I thought "Oh well, I shan't be such a jay-chou fanatic and a cold blanket to the BBQ, I shall watch the recorded version at home"

AND GUESS WHAT MY FRIEND JUST TOLD ME??

Friend: i got v bad news
the power tripped again n mtv awards not recorded....

haha i especially loved the "speak mandarin award" part! I love how Jay has a lot of pride in being Chinese. ^^ I hope he could influence "westerners" to take more of an interest into Chinese culture.

i didn't watch it that night , but i read newpaper said that he is so cool that singing long quan with opera voice, and speaking chinese after awarded.

Whoa, Avril Lavigne is short! Jay looks super tall beside her!

After reading the 'Speak Mandarin' thing, I am wondering if Jay have anything against people who Chong2 Yang2? (meaning to like Western, mostly American stuff alot, to the extent that they think anything Westernized is superior)
Cos in his The One Concert, he did say something about not wanting to compare with Foreigners but... like he wants to do a CHINESE thing... You guys know what I'm refering to? I can't remember his exact words.
I'm wondering what triggered him to say something like that. Was there some controversial thing linking to this in Taiwan?

hmm.. i think after reading couple of jay's interviews, u jus get the general impression that he has a LOT of chinese pride in him. Like he says stuff like, he wants to break into the Western markets cuz he wants to show that Asian music is not inferior to Western music. At the MTV awards, he also chose to sing Long Quan combined with Nunchucks to showcase his more Asian-flavored music. I dont know if he'll dislike pple who chong2 yang2, but im thinking its likely. Just cuz it seems like he's trying so hard to be the opposite, to embody asian pride, etc... And he really admires pple like Jet Li, Yao Ming, and Li Yundi cuz he says "they bring pride to the Chinese pple." So there u go..

yea i agree totally that it's great he has so much chinese pride.. i think the way he wants to show the world chinese music with comprimising his own style is really admirable.. and i think by doing that he will stand out more in front of the westerners..

we should all be proud of wad he's doing.. i don't think he should learn english for the sake of being more marketable.. music has no barriers and if he can show the world his music without having to speak a word of english that would really be something wonderful!!

ya jay really got loads of chinese pride! he's so funny when he insisted in speaking chinese at the MAA.. but it's kinda expected! his performance was HOT man! i watched the performance over n over again for abt 10 times i think! esp like the parts where he added yo yo yoz~... n the nanchunks! was pretty upset that couldnt be there LIVE.. glad i caught his performance niwae.. JAY ROX~
