View Full Version : Dido [die-do or dee-do? i mean i never...]
grumble...
er...neways
anyone ever heard of this artist? Dido.
she has a cool name methinks, i was introduced to her by a friend about a month ago. in deep depression she sent over on MSN a song named "Life For Rent" along with a bunch of other songs by other artists...and i picked this song among that pile of MP3s...cuz i thought the name of the song was interesting. i fell in love with Dido's voice...she sounds so distinctively African American but she is in actuality...Caucasian
so then i went out and got her album...and i must say that her voice is amazing, angelic i dare say...and her songs are very inspiring...not your regular american girl poppish, trite, distasteful music...but has very meaningful lyrics and cool a melody.
so er...anyone heard of her? like, nopph, get in here.

yea i've heard of her!! i think her name is pronounced die-do ... she was featured in one of eminem's songs  the song is called "stan" and dido performs the chorus. but i've heard a version w/ just dido (no eminem rapping) but im not sure what the name of that one is
yer i noticed that she makes reference to him quite a bit O o
her song was used in one of Eminem's songs as a background melody...but she revamped it and re-released it...sounds great =)

i have her new album: "life for rent"
my brother is in love with her. and her music vid for"white flag" has david boreanez from angel in it. very...interesting...
yea new album is nothing really ground breaking but its just as good. she's update a version of trip-hop and she still has the urban love theme going on.
she doenst sound american is because she's british. she sings and writes some of the lyrics while her brother produces.
if you like this album you'd probably like her previous work "no angel".
and she also reminds me a little of sarah mclaghlin(i can never spell her name), very good artist as well.
she has a new single "falling"
both are very very good live.
its die-do by the way.

(I got in here as soon as I could Jo.)
I've always liked Dido, ever since I heard "Thank You", "Here With Me", and her remix of "Stan" on the radio. Her new CD, Life For Rent is amazingly good. Her voice along with the melodies are really soothing, I listen to it driving or running and everything.
Been trying to find guitar tabs for her newer songs but no such luck. If any can help me out..? =) Greatly appreciate it.

i say die-do hehe ... her voice is very distinctive and soothing. these are my favorite lines from 'white flag'
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
such a pretty song. good luck finding those tabs cici

I say die-do... but I guess we will never know unless she herself clarifies..
White Flag is one of my favorite favorite songs ever. Her voice is so beautiful.

It definitely is DIE-DO, that's how everyone introduces her, that's how she says it.
Dido is actually also the name of the Queen of Carthage if you study Roman history, and it's pronounce DIE-DO as well.
Anyways, I love White Flag, Life for Rent, and Closer off the new album.

Yeah Dido was named after the Queen of Carthage, which is weird she says because the queen commited suicide so she doesn't know why she's named after her.
And Dee-do sounds like a guy's manhood..

Well Dido (Queen of Carthage) is well known for her passion when it came to love.
Since she was in love with Aeneas and he wouldn't stay with her, she couldn't take it and threw herself into a funeral pyre. In Dante's Divine Comedy, she was punished into hell for 'cheating' on her dead husband Sichaeus. Which I found interesting...in those times a man could have numerous wives, but for a woman, even after her husband dies she can't love anyone else.
Anyways, this has little to do with Dido, but I thought it was interesting.
edit: oh yeah the story of Dido (the queen) reminds me of White Flag...that love you just can't let go.

Die-do is the English way to pronounce it.
Dee-do is the Chinese way to pronounce it. That's the way they write it in Chinese.
I first heard her voice in the Eminem song. I like her voice, but I get depressed when I listen to her song...

of course it's die-do! why would chinese people pronounce dee-do? vunsin, you're so resourceful! (another reason why the link to chun li came up... in any case, i'll stop making the referral so you don't think you're always being compared to her. >.<)
i really like Dido. "here with me" is an all-time fave track of hers for me. i have her first album, "no angel". the song "thank you" is great, too. and i really liked the lil' mix with eminem. that was really cool and the MV was nicely donw. a sad story though. i haven't heard of any of her new stuff yet. but she does have a distinct voice compared to other artists. plus, she writes her own stuff and that's just awesome.

It's just because I listen to Taipei Hit FM online all the time. :wink2: It's a great way to learn about new albums, latest news and stuffs. They always say "dee-do" so I know that's the Chinese way of pronouncing her name. At least it's close. I get so confused when they say Japanese singers' names because you know they pronounce those Chinese characters (kanjis) in completely different ways in Japanese! Same with English names. And Korean names. And they translate song names to Chinese too.
But anyhow, I guess nobody's really paying attention because I still see people asking and debating whether it's "die-do" or "dee-do" after I've posted the "answer" to it. Thanks for paying attention to me, wackycashew. p/s: And I saw that fine print. :bleh:

the first i ever heard of her was from Eminiem's 'Stan'
That's how she caught my attention too. And then there's the theme song for Smallville. She's got an amazing voice for someone her age. i mean, if I saw a poster of her, and with that name "Di-do"... I'd never have given her a chance. Not that I have anything against these girls but Michelle Branch, shakira, Holly Vallance.... they're almost the same.
cici bebe
11-05-2003, 05:12 AM
For her age? How old is she?
I never knew she sung a theme song for Smallville, I just knew she had a song for Roswell ("Here With Me"), and that's why I liked her. Her music has that type of moodiness to it, almost depressing, that I like.
ashley
11-05-2003, 07:15 AM
Pardon me, Cici. :prop: You're right, it was Roswell, not Smallville (outcast guy, teenage love...I got confused).
Dido, is named after an African warrior queen. Do you guys know that she plays the violing and the piano very well?
And will you believe she's 32? I know comparing her with the contemporary female solo singersdon't make sense but I love how she doesn't use beauty nor sexuality nor scandals to make it wher she is today.
wait Ashley, you're not completely wrong, not at all
Dido DID sing a song, not a theme song...but there was a song by Dido used as background music on an episode of Smallville
i think it was just last week, or perhaps the week before...it was near the end of the episode, when Lana told Clark that he had a choice to open his heart to people. you know, right after he was rescued from his evil condition.
dido does have a really soothing voice, it suits Roswell alot (which i am becoming addicted to since cable tv is replaying the show daily :glug: )
Not that I have anything against these girls but Michelle Branch, shakira, Holly Vallance.... they're almost the same.
i am reallly sorry, i know this is off topic, but being a very devoted michelle branch fan i have to object to this comment. michelle is rock-pop rather than pop, she doesn't dance and doesn't use her sexuality to sell her records. (sorri, kinda offended coz i'm definitely not a fan of holly or shakira, and even though you're not making a negative comment)

I'm sorry Loko. I knew I'd offend someone when I wrote that. I'm bad at expressing myself but I'm trying to point out that, to me, Dido is a 'fresh breath of air' to the music industry dominated by young, pretty, sexy girls.
I really shouldn't have put Michelle's name there.

Dido? The english version of Michelle Yip? :?
I like Here with me soo...much! It's very sad song...somehow quite s lot of sad things came across my mind when I listen to that song..anyone has this feeling?
She is 32??? I thought she is 25!
dido is a singer who has a great voice but unfortunately i'm not of those who appreciate it too much
i mean i like her singing in eminem's 'stan'
besides that i wouldn't be too interested in her songs
ashley, it doesn't really matter. it's just coz i really don't like the other two singers, while i love michelle branch. :)
I like Here with me soo...much!
michelle branch actually has a song on her first album by that name as well....
dido is married too right?

I really like "Thank You", but somehow I don't enjoy "White Flag" as much; I thought it was too depressing. I know the song is supposed to be inspiring, how she'd never give up, but its depressing to me because its too idealistic, and drives in the point that nobody is like that, really.
And a local newspaper actually called her the "Bridget Jones of the music scene", if i remember$correctly. I thought it was rather apt?

I like her first album. I think the album though, is more of a "chick" album. And the whole album reeks of breakup. It nearly got me depressed when I was listening to it when I underwent a breakup.
"so you're with her, and not with me.."

i agree with most of you guys. dido's really an amazing artist. her voice is really clear and yet sounds a little fragile, the arrangements are beautiful and the songs soothing. i've listened to her music ever since she released her first album "no angel". i haven't had much time to check out her new album, but i like "white flag" and i'm sure i'll like the rest of the new album as well. relaxing seems so much easier while listening to a dido song.

dido is one of my fave female artists, she can really bring out the feelings in her songs, her voice is quite 'haunting' too. my fave song is 'white flag' and 'hunter'. it's nice to hear songs that doesn't really require a singer to reach mariah carey's 8 octave voice (sooo annoying to me!!). her 2nd album is worth buying!!!
yeah, she doesn't look 32 at all, she looks 25, 26. do you know she was christened Florian Cloud De Bounevialle by her poet mom and publisher father?? thank goodness she didn't use it for work. the name is nice though, very poetic. imagine filling up the the registration forms...

well just for the record, there is a hidden track in her new album - life for rent. i have to admit she looks better lately.

yeah bbsasa jie, the MV is very simple but i like it. just like her performance in MTV europe awards, wow, she really goes for simplicity, compare to the other performers of the day, whose stage set must have cost the organisers and recording comp a bomb to put it up.

wow, she really goes for simplicity
i agree. i like the simplicity about her. i dont know, i like the melodys that sad songs have. white flag is such a beautiful song, i just totally disagree with the story line of the lyrics. such a devotion is hard to maintain.
about a post from ages ago tho, no way holly valance can be compared to michelle branch! im not a big fan of either, but then i just think holly valance taints the music industry. i know u prolly meant nothing of it, but i just realllly dont like her. i cant see much talent in her, just alot of flesh :dead:

die-doh. =)
i have her first album..she's a good singer but i dont' like some of her songs..like, how she sings...
i havn't heard her new album xcept for the white flag song that' s on the radion...
i like her slow songs the best...i generally like slow songs but she really...drags it out and makes it sound mellow and so peacefull..

Yeah it's true that she wasn't well known at first, but she partially became more popular because her song "Here With Me" that was the theme for the hit WB tv show Roswell.I loved that song & the show.
It was so suspenseful & mysterious, which is why Dido's soulful voice was perfect for that show's theme.Whenever, her song Thank You would play on the radio.I loved to sing along with her & my friends told me that my pitch was perfect with hers.^^
