View Full Version : (In general) Which language in music do you prefer listening to?

Ive come to notice that songs in different languages just sound different, even if theyre in the same genre like pop or rap, the music itself isnt the same. Some may be generally smoother, some bouncier, others choppier. Like korean-pop isnt the same as chinese-pop isnt the same indian-pop. i preferably prefer mandarin music/songs more than the others (and ive listened to quite a few others). so for those who've had a good taste of what music in other languages sound like already, which music language do you prefer?

i actually prefer listening to mandarin and english songs. Because thats the 2 languages i can more understand and know what the singer is trying to show through the music.

I'm having a hard time choosing between Mandarin and English. But, in the end, I'd have to choose English. I like the different varieties in music. Although every language have different varieties. But I like the fact that not all good(popular) songs and or music require singers to belt out notes.....for example Nora Jones. Sure her voice is not as normal/traditional as other artists out there.....but her voice suits her musical genre. She has this smokey/rusty voice that is so mellow and is sure to calm her audiences.

Adding on to the variety are the emotions that convey in english language musics. Now, speaking for American music. I love the fact that not all singers have to use the same kind of voice and diction in their songs. All(every) kind of voice is accepted. When the idea of a song is supposed to convey anger, you feel the anger and frustration from the voice that the artist is using. If the idea of the song is about heartache....you feel that person's sorrow by the emotion that they convey in their song.

Sorry for the rant, I think I must stop now.

although im canto... i still prefer to listen to mandarin songs.. they flow heaps easier..

english songs are alright depending on the genre... i reckon theres too much screaming in music rather than actually singing the lyrics...

bt otherwise its all good...

Mandarin is better, coz it's easier to understand and sing, and by the way....i'm chinese....haha....so,it's easier for me to understand chinese/mandarin.So this is why i vote for mandarin, just like what Jay said "zhi chi zhong guo feng de yin yue"(support chinese-style music).

I prefer listening to chinese mandarin music even though I understand engish more than I do mandarin. I guess it is because I find many mandarin music to be more mellow and soft than english music. Plus, I believe I can relate more to mandarin music than english music.

Up until a few months ago, I'd never really listened to any music in Mandarin--I understand Cantonese fluently, Mandarin not so much. Then Jay changed everything. Also, I've been listening to a lot of Nan Quan Mama as well.

At the moment I'm only really listening to Jay, so I had to choose Mandarin. I suppose that all my other music is in English or French though, and I don't really listen to pop music that's in English. It's kind of hard to chose one language over the other. But Mandarin has a definitely flow to it that sounds really good when it's sung.

i Agreeee with all of ya...i like Mandarin..the flow of the words..is just right...although im canto...n dont understand too much of mandarin..i think that it just sounds better. like in canto these days..the words..r veryyy street/slang..not really that..uhh..poetic..or professional?..lolz..whatever im tryna say there..but in mandarin..the words...r more formal..so it doesnt sound..like cheap..or everyday talkin...ya know?...
n japanese..i dunno..they have the weirdest...rythmn n melody to their songs..n the voice...has to0o0o much vibrato..its kinda annoyin...english is actually great..they can do the most amazin singing..but i guess its the words..that just dont sound right sometimes....n all the others....no comment...
alll thanks to JAY...im all into mandarin music..!

I like listening to Mandarin better, even though I'm Cantonese. A lot of the canto-pop/music just bores me to death =.= I listen to a bit of Japanese and Korean, mostly just cause I listen to BoA and Jay. =]

I can decipher Korean better and I can get the gist of Japanese if I really listen to the lyrics, but usually Chinese videos I have to see the video to get a better idea.

I like Japanese, Korean and Mandarin. There are artists from each country that I like, so yea but I do not like BoA english version songs. The translation for some is a bit formal.

I don't listen to much English music.

My radio is pretty much locked on Pop Goes Asia. :-)

i used to prefer canto .. but lately the canto songs coming out haven't been that great.. and mandarin songs are getting better and better so i have changed and now i prefer mandarin! : ) i don't think it has anything to do with the general "style" of music a language has.. it's just canto people haven't been coming out with good songs lately, while mandarin ones have.. maybe it's because a lot of the canto singers are trying to do mandarin as well now too, but it's not working that well because most of the time it does not sound right.. and they need to work on their mandarin first :P

korean is okay too.. but because i don't understand the language, at times it all sounds the same.. i wish i could understand what they were singing! :P

i would have to say mandarin. however, i live in the philippines,so i do listen to a lot of english music on the radio, but in my computer my playlist only has several english songs... there is something about mandarin songs that is different, i mean the language in itself is really nice to sing in, unlike say canto or hokkien (no offense meant). composition-wise they can incorporate a whole lot of idioms and meaningful figures of speech, whereas in english, it's like what you hear is what you get. plus i really don't like a lot of english hip-hop songs... always talking about spending money and getting laid. (listening to hokkien rap is kinda fun though hahahah)

well yeh i chose chinese - mandarin it flows really well and sounds nice :) lol i feel really biased right now because i am mandarin myself. I dont know, when i listen to canto songs, it sounds kinda.. distrupted? it just doesnt flow as well.. i like slower songs see :P teehee i like english songs too because its my first language, im more drawn to the lyrics.. but in saying that, i think chinese lyrics are much nicer as in the subject and just.. i dno.. lol still following? well yeh.. i dont really listen to krn or jap so.. cant comment =/

I grew up listening to English music and I'm loving it more than ever so my choice is too obvious.
I've listened to music in different languages than you could ever imagine
but it's English music that stole my heart and totally influenced me as an individual.
I also prefer listening to Filipino music, because aside from the fact that it is my mother tongue,
Filipino music catches the heart and soul of every song in our native language.

I voted for Mando. :3

I like Mando & Korean because I can't understand them. So basically I just pay attention to the actual music & the singers' voices instead of the lyrics. I enjoy it a lot more that way.

I don't like Japanese as much 'cause the language is prettier spoken, in my opinion anyway. [Also because Japanese music is almost all rock/metal nowadays.. >_>;]

I haven't tried many others, except for Viet, but I don't like Viet 'cause.. well their voices almost all sound the same as far as what I've heard. I dunno, I just have yet to heard a Viet song that I like, is all.

Edit//
Oh, I forgot English. But everyone listens to English music nowadays in America. I'm sick of all this hip-hop/hard rock/crap music in America. So that's why I started listening to refreshing! Asian music again. *nod*

I'd have to choose, Korean first, then Japanese, then Mandarin.

Most of my music is Korean and Japanese, well aside from the many Jay and Wang Lee Hom albums Lol, but yeah, I find those two languages better to listen to, although mandarin is improving more for me.. aside from the artists that I like, I don't like it that much...... Just that the words that are being sung in Korean and Japanese sound better to me...:wink2:

i prefer english cuz i can actually sing along and know the meaning of the songs. The other choice was mandarin cuz of jay's songs. i also like to korean songs cuz i just think that the language is so cute.

Actually i prefer mandopop cos they relate to me better than other languages but i lyk english and korean songs too. Cantopop dont appeal to me at all i dont know why. Mandarin songs are normally much easier to the ear than some english songs. Its just the flow of the words i guess.

if i could have two choices i would have chosen mandarin and cantonese. although my cantonese isn't very good, cantonese songs have this different feel to them that chinese songs don't. but i chose mandarin! because... i don't know but mandarin songs sound the nicest to me and they have a... sort of 'friendlier' sound to me than english ones. :D

I listen to mandarin the most, but I also love korean music~like the new Rain album!:wink2:

I listen to quite a bit of english music too, since I live in North America. There's a few Jap songs here and there in my playlist as well.

I agree with peppermint that music in different languages sounds different, even when the genre's the same. I really like the way Mandarin and Cantonese can put a lot of meaning into small phrases, and the way English, Russian, and Thai words have many different sounds in one word. I think Japanese, Korean, Hindi, and Panjabi have great rhythms, and Irish and Arabic are very passionate and emotional. Basically, I love every language  . I like the way Jay Chou uses his lyrics as a kind of instrument (although sometimes it makes the song difficult to understand). Tori Amos, my other favorite musician, does the same thing^^.:-)

What do English songs sound like to people whose native language is something other than English? I've heard people say that English is beautiful, but then again I've also heard people say it's really ugly >.<.

hmm... though i'm chinese and understand the language, i prefer listening to Korean music. i just love the language and the music that comes with it. those Korean voices are more beautiful too. =P

Hmm.. through out all of the languages that i know the best, English and Mandarin, i like listening to Korean and Japanese the most cuz im currently learning those languages. Although a part of the reason is, to me, Korean and Japanese are beauitful languages and they have fabulous singers too

Hmm.. I prefer listening to chinese songs.. I always feel that the lyrics are very meaningful.. (Maybe because I understand them) I like listening to english music too, but sometimes the lyrics are really too vulgar..

Of cause Chinese Madrin!
It's easy to listen, sing and remember. Many people like it ^^
But I also like japanese. The tongue is quite lovely . If only I could vote for it too !
By the way, I want to say that Chinese cantonese sounds very funny to Vietnamese ^^ Ha ha

couldn't decide between korean or mandarin. i think the korean lyrics sound really awesome, and their style of music best fits the kind of stuff i like listening to, but i love mandarin because i actually understand what's going on in them XD the only real setback is there aren't a lot of amazing singers in the chinese music industry...in my opinion...whereas korea seems to have a wider range of singers and a lot of the girls have VERY strong, mature voices that can do riffs and fancy stuff like that, so =)

even though i barely understand mando.. i prefer it over english music..

english pop music has gone off on a tangent into the dance/trance/hiphop stream.. where as chinese pop is still a balance between rapping, ballads, hiphop, RnB and pop..

I like Mandarin because I can half understand it but not fully like English.

Why?

I have no idea...

Maybe it's because it's better since some lyrics don't make sense (there to just rhyme e.g.) but I just want an idea of what it's about.

Maybe I'm just strange... @_@

hahaha. Yeah, chinese as in mandarin. (:
(although I seriously hate that subject like woahhhhhh.)
