How do I hate Zhang Ziyi? Let me count the ways.

I hate her image in cinema--I feel like she's feeding into the representation of Asian women as decorative geisha types. The way she interprets roles irks me. There is always a weakness and need for men to acknowledge her sexuality in her performances.

I hate her stupid laugh. In 2046, I wanted to smack her every time she appeared on screen.

I hate that she's revived the fantasy of the Oriental flower for western audiences.

I hate her boring face. I know that she's very pretty, but it's such a boring kind of beauty. Gong Li and Maggie Cheung are interesting to look at, and always bring strength and grace to the roles they are playing.

I hate her style of fighting in movies. She looks so wimpy and weak. She makes kungfu look like pop dance moves.

I hate the look she has on her face when she's supposed to be concentrating in a movie. She's so vacant that it's impossible to believe that's she's thinking.

I hate the clothes that she wears to red carpet events. Fugly frills and cutesy dresses.

I hate the fact that she's offered every role in Chinese cinema and that other actresses who have more talent are getting her leftovers.

There was this one point in time where I really really really hated her, but now that has simmered down to 'deeply dislike'.

I do agree with your first point whole-heartedly. I don't think she represents Asian women gracefully AT ALL. How many of her Hollywood roles are not sexually-oriented? NONE. As if Westerners don't objectify Asian women enough, here she is making sure that they do. On one hand she's saying that she wants to bring pride to us, on the other hand she's injecting sex into all her roles. Great. Thanks a lot. Just when we're fighting for respect.

I love Gong Li and Maggie Cheung. Those two are true women who carry themselves with grace and dignity. Despite their ages, there is something really classic and timeless about them.

I lost respect for her several years ago, especially after I found out that she was a bitch in real life.

I also heard that she basically threw herself at Ang Lee to get the role in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. That made her sound so cheap. Her acting isn't really all that great either.

Don't forget that whole fiasco with the son of the Fok family either.

You know, I never thought about it until now. She dose put alot of sex into her movies. The only movie I can remember that she did nothing sexual in was Rush hour 2. I do like her. But you both have some good points.

Wow, I don't really hate her. I just don't really care too much for her.

And I do agree with the whole "sex" thing. She is putting out an image that Asian women are okay with the sleeping around epidemic like in America. Which makes me question her acting......can she really play/act out a character without having to show her ability to do "well, you know"

Oooh, I love Maggie Cheung, and I also think that Gong Li is timeless. So much grace for the both of them...which is why I was so disappointed in Gong Li for the whole Miami Vice project she agreed. Why??????

I'm not really against her, but I like less silver-screened actresses better like Rainie. I really don't like Gong Li for some reason, she looks nasty and harsh. Maggie Cheung I DO like, but all these actresses are all really uncute or sweet. they seem cold ... unlike Rainie ^_^

i dont really hate her. but i just notice she have lots of sex scenes in the movies she acts in. some people might even say she had to sleep with lot of people to be where she is.

i have read on people opinions on her from another forum, one person say how she's not even a martial art person and yet was able to be in crouching tiger hidden dragon. also with her having sex scenes, i bet most of them she had sex doubles, but dont credit the women who are the real ones being naked in those scenes.

so yea, like khmerchef said, lets see a movie where she's not having sexual intercourse with anyone.

actually I dont even think she's a beauty. she looks so boring and ugly, especially in the Geisha movie. I dont like her to represent asian actors and I dont think she's one of the most talented chinese actors

I wasn't prejudiced against her at all until I came into this thread.
And then...I just realized what a biatch she is...
Gosh. When I saw her in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, I thought that she SUCKED to the bottom at acting.
Two words...
SLUTTY BITCH!

Guess my job here is done. Haha. But I hesitate to use the words "slut" or "bitch" to describe any woman--there's too much cultural baggage there, and even in my intense burning sun hatred of Zhang Ziyi I don't know if I can go there.

c_c_ Zhang Ziyi is really pretty, so it's a compliment for people to say that you look like her. But I just really hate her acting and her methods of interpretation.

I think I wouldn't mind the fact that the roles she takes involve sex if there was depth to her acting. For instance, I thought Gong Li did a great job in Miami Vice (even though ew, Colin Farrell is so foul) because she gave her chraracter strength and a touch of vulnerability.

My problem is with Zhang Ziyi is that she appears to be flailing all the time. In Hero, she's just really pathetic. The sex scene, though it's part of an imagined sequence, just made her seem so distasteful.

I think that at the core of it, she's not a good actress and I don't like her as a person, and without acting skills she's pretty much playing herself over and over again. She's lucky that she photographs well, or she wouldn't have a career.

Yes, khmerchef and zhy378, I would love to see a movie where she isn't relying on being sexed up to create a character.

LayRyan: That information about her learning English by listening to Enimen is priceless. I think I would have used a language program instead. But then I'm trying to learn Mandarin by listening to Jay Chou, so I'll probably only be able to tell people that I like orcs, I listen to my mother, I'm getting revenge for my father, my love gushes like rainwater, and I hate it when the paparazzi chases me.

The Fok family is one of the many well-known, wealthy families in Hong Kong. One of the former Miss Hong Kongs from the 80s married into that family a year or so after she won the pageant and bore the family three sons. Do any of you remember the Chinese diver Guo Jing Jing? She was rumoured for quite awhile to have dated the oldest son. Around the same time, rumours started to surface that Zhang Ziyi was shamelessly chasing around the second son, who had only just graduated from University. The media went nuts with it.

When I first heard, I was pretty repulsed actually. It seemed like she had set her sights on one of the most prominent families in Hong Kong, with a guy who was so young no less. I lost all of my remaining respect for her then.

I have nothing really "against" ZhangZhiYi, I think her dance scene in Memoirs of a Geisha done quite good. My friend seems to really hate her though, since ZhangZiyi used to stick to the Hong Kong actors beofre going to Hollywood then whenever she meets a Hong Kong actor now, shes like "Hi... ugh" then walks off to speak to the Hollywood ones :dry:

Does anyone remember the slap Hatsumomo (Gong Li) gave Chiyo (ZhangZiyi) in Memoirs of a Geisha? Remember how LOUD it was? It was actually a real slap. Gong Li slapped ZhangZiYi on her face really hard :excited:

I think I need to see Memoirs of a Geisha just to see Gong Li slap Zhang Ziyi. That will be worth suffering through the rest of Arthur Golden's fantasy world. Thanks for the tip, Sweet Neko.

Piglet, perhaps he reason why the western media loves Zhang Ziyi so much and wants her to stand in for all of Asia is that she represents that weak kind of Oriental flower fantasy girl. She's so easily moulded by western influences.

The fact that she won't talk to HK actors and prefers Hollywood actors is just another thing that makes her so much more hateful. She wants to be that stereotypical image of an Asian woman.

Adding to the hate list: I hate her because she fuels Yellow Fever.

I would always get steamed up when poeple in the media would say the she's a beauty who can kick our a$$. But all her martial arts is choreographed. It's not real. Look at the way she kicks/punches in Crouching Tiger or in House of Flying Daggers. There's no energy...no force and no execution in her moves. Whereas look at actors like Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan....when they kick/punch....that sucker looks like it hurts.

And about the Fok family......Wow! Juicy....I didn't even know about that. But, most likely that's from me living where I am.

And listening to Eminem to learn English????:crazy: Who gave her that idea???? It'll be funny if someone told her to do that, just to see it she was ditzy enough to actually do it.:bleh:

He successfully made both the Chinese and the Japanese very angry, and I can understand why. For the Chinese, with all the residual 'hate' towards the Japanese for the last several decades, it's insulting seeing a Chinese girl play a Japanese geisha who gets lain on by a Japanese man. For the Japanese, some Chinese actress took the role of one of their most celebrated geisha.

That got me too. Because when I first saw the preview, I wondered how she could play a geisha, when that is a Japenese custom. And beings that she is chinese. The part was not played with any real emotion, and did not even come from any experience with the culture. They should have let some who is Japanese play the part, so that the part can come across as being more emotional and authentic, because it would have been play by someone who really knows the culture.

I really had no idea she was such a slut. I can't really say that I hate her now. But I can say that my view of her has certainly changed from what it was.

i was just watching a 2001 movie called Legend of Zu, and guess who was in it...zhang ziyi. her role was a student-it was a small role and lets say her fighting is not that good especially in the scenes when you can tell it is a guy wearing a ponytail fighting with a sword.

so is it me or sometimes zhang ziyi play roles where they are not necessary like the role she played in Hero.:whistle:

I was watching some of her older and newer movies and I realised, her acting has not improved at ALL in her career. She makes her roles all the same and injects no 'life' into it. Gosh, it's like trying to watch a corpse trying to act.

But I heard the Hong Kong press is really mean to her. She went to some American award thing (I think it was the Oscars) and she wore this black strapless dress. I remembered the HK press had a field day, saying her boobs weren't big enough to fit in that dress.

Awesome. Welcome to the bashfest. I cannot believe that she insisted on speaking English. The only time I've seen her speak English was at the Oscars, and it was so pitifully bad. There are zillions of other Chinese who speak better English.

The idea of a documentary called "Zhang Ziyi bears all" makes me laugh and laugh and laugh. Wow she sucks.

And yes, her dresses are so terrible. You'd think with all her stylists and people she could choose an amazing dress.

I don't really hate Zhang Ziyi, its more of dislike. Refering to some of the posts in the first page of this topic, I also don't like the characters Zhang Ziyi portrays. They're passive, submissive feminie roles. It really bothers me that she is one of the females portraying asian women with such 'push-over' characters. I don't see much variation in her acting skills O.o;
But I do agree she is very pretty and stylish. I think I read somewhere that she was originally a dancer and was doing a commercial directed by when Zhang Yimou. He saw lots of potential in her and thats how her acting career began. lol, i think she should have stuck to her original career.

I think I'd find her more likable if she wasn't getting it on with a guy in almost every movie she's in... I respect her to some extent but, she doesn't exactly stand out as an excellent actress.

It doesn't make her a slut to play one, but I think she should have really considered it carefully before taking on the role. There is a lot of negative emotion attached a Chinese girl playing that role...there was a lot of backlash in China after the movie released.

I don't even think she's pretty! True, she does have a very oriental look about her, but there are so many other prettier and more talented Chinese actresses out there! And yeah, she did graduate from the best and most prestigious dance academy in China, but she's an ACTRESS now. Oh gosh. And what I hate most is how she is compared to Gong Li. OH PLEASE. Gong li is almost incomparable. She injects depth and substance in her roles and she can practically portray any role. She can act as a high and mighty Empress or a struggling single mother and even a young country bumpkin. She's seriously classic and timeless. Did anyone see her in Memoirs alongside Michelle Yeoh and Zhang? She totally stole the show and blew everyone away. Zhang? She can't even carry a role beyond her spiteful and wilful princessy roles. EEKS. Oh and hang on, she calls herself Ziyi Zhang. God, can there be anyone more.. ugh.

And one more thing. How did Jake Gyllenhall ever had a crush on her.

happifruit, yes, I remember reading it in a S'porean mag about it... but I don't think it's the first time... i've heard lots of stuff about her having issues with the press in China... people got mad when she compared Zhang Yimou to the Geisha Director (whatsisname again?) that Zhang never compliments her acting so it's more difficult than the Geisha guy who always compliment her when she did a good job.

She's a good actress, she's really into character n stuff, but I dun understand why the west wanted to portray her or symbollizes her as everything ASIAN when she doesn't even act THAT Asian...

I have issues with her that it made me refuse to wear Maybelline cosmetic cuz she's the spokeperson... haha (I used LOREAL instead cuz the sp is GongLi)... talk about irrational hate... ahaha...

^ i guess we can call her the paris hilton of asia, or at least china. but beside seeing her as a 'slut' she may as well be a fake too, like i dont think all those sex and fight scenes are her real acting, she probably have dozens of doubles-naked body double and stunt double who arent credit or annouced by herself that she didnt do that and this scene.
i dont see how an actress can be so famous when she cant even do her own scenes.

Yeah, I remember reading a magazine about her legally changing her name to Ziyi Zhang....it was either People magazine or Entertainment Weekly, I can't remember.

But, there was no point in that. Everyone still calls her Zhang Ziyi. My brother is absolutely "in love" with her. He thinks that she is sooo hot. I mean, she's pretty and all, but in the words of my neighborhood "She ain't all that."

Are you serious? She didn't want to give an interview in Mandarin?! That's almost as stupid as me(who speaks English and Khmer) going to France and give an interview in French.....even though I took it for 2 years, my French sucks....and I just end up sounding like a 'tard.

I didn't really have that much of a negative impression of her, but after hearing all this. Geez...she's so fake. Even Paris Hilton's not that fake. I don't know who's worst?

And for the record; I love the movie House of Flying Daggers, I guess the storyline is touching in a way. Let's face it, I only watch that movie for Andy and Takeshi.

The difference between Paris Hilton and Zhang Ziyi is, at the end of the day, Paris Hilton only does what she does for attention (and none of it matters because she has a trust fund--girlfriend doesn't have to work), while Zhang Ziyi has to remember that she's working (so the public is less forgiving of her bad behaviour because we're paying for her comfortable existence by going to movies she's in).

I just saw Perhaps Love, and it occurred to me that the character played by Zhou Xun may be based on Zhang Ziyi. The character started out as a showgirl, slept with her directors to get ahead as an actress, and had a really sad fetish for the United States.

i agree so much..why is she so famous? she doesn't have an ounce of talent. and shes not even that good a model! shes 'taiwant #1 model' right? but i see nothing in her that deserves such a title. her face is very tiny..and not pretty. i personally dont prefer her looks, because theyre so mousy! nothing to stand out..while other models with stronger features are not as well known! i dont even know why shes so famous...i dont even want to talk about her acting...i feel shes such a princess really..too sweet for my tates, and sometimes i feel its not even real sweet ness. she really doesn't deserve all this fame shes getting...theres so many more talented women out there trying to make it and shes famous for no reason...

She can be pretty, but most of the time she looks really plain to me. There's nothing really womanly about her. I think there are way prettier Asian girls. The survey respondents nominated Hong Kong movie star Maggie Cheung as the woman they would most like to see on TV ads because she resembles a real consumer. She already appears in a number of ads for cosmetic products and has already helped to boost their popularity.

Popular young stars like Zhang Ziyi, Vicky Zhao and Fan Bingbing from the Chinese mainland were voted in as the three women that consumers would least like to see on commercials. Respondents gave them the thumbs down because of all the bad publicity they have received in relation to their personal lives.

Taiwan pop singer Jay Chou was unpopular for the same reason, as well as his distance from the public.

I do think though that she is overexposed. Almost every production of epic scale, she appears to be in. After a while you begin to think: hey, she did something like this in that other movie and also that other movie.

Am also agreeing with that Gong Li and Maggie Cheung have so much more presence. When watching Memoirs of a geisha I paused for a moment to get a snack. It was right at a scene where they were exchanging comments. There was so much life on Gong Li's face, while Zhang's seemed so stale. Even if she was supposed to be a bit reserved, something should have shone through.

I'm personally a big fan of her. Anyone who bashes Zhang Ziyi should see her in her first film (The Road Home). She was nothing short of fantastic there. I also liked her in House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and 2046, but not Hero or Memoirs of A Geisha. In the former she was wasted in a tiny role and in the latter, she could not speak English well enough. I don't think they should cast Chinese actors in Hollywood films when they can bearly speak the language. I understand English is difficult to master however.

I fast forward on those, so I don't pay attention to those parts she is in. I liked her in the Geisha movie, when she was doing the Japanese traditional dances. There was that one part. I liked her in that. But the other films like one of my favorite with Takeshi Kaneshiro (Flying Daggers), They could have casted another actress in my opinion for her part. She lacked chemistry with him. In my opinion.

So you could imagine what I got out of it. But I loved when they were in the forest. The greenery was to die for. That was one of my favorite parts. As well as, when they were in the open field and he realized that he loved her. He went to look for flowers for her. That was romantic. I am more about action pictures, but romance is not that bad when it is at a minimum. I loved this picture though.
