Orange Range's songs never failed as my pick-me-up, whenever I'm feeling a little low or just needed some perking up. Light-hearted & summer-ish, it's perfect for that dull Monday morning on your dreary way to work.
Track 1: UN ROCK STAR
This song brings a smile across my face, especially 50sec before the song ends, there's a kiddy voice that goes "na na na na na", very typical of them, injecting a bit of humor into their songs.
Track 2: 風林火山
Watch out for that mixing right at the front! It's really good! And this song is amazing because they use offbeat drum patterns yet it doesn't sound jarring. (meaning the hard beat of the drums & the emphasis of the song & the rest of the melody is different, slightly 'off' by a beat or so). It simply shows the skill of the drummer & the chemistry that the band has, as it is VERY tough to co-ordinate that & not make the song sound "wrong"
Track 3: マイ・ライフル
A little of that Jamiroquai feeling in this song, namely the 'faraway' 'dreamy' vocals and the instruments technically overpowers the vocals. A lot more sampling is used in this song than the others and a lot more play on the amplification, where the song goes from loud to soft & throw in a couple of bells.. More angsty than the rest, this track may be a little too dark for usual OR fans used to their light & 'happy' tunes.
Track 4: U topia LIVE - LIVE TOUR 005 ИATURAL-
Live track. I find most Jap bands love to do this in their singles. Throw in a live recording of a previous song into their newest single. But I love to listen to lives. IMO, live playing is the surest way to tell if a band/singer is good. Especially for bands, the cohesiveness, the power & all that energy is what makes/breaks a live act. And of course, what we look for in a live concert is simply to give us something DIFFERENT. A slight change in arrangement from the CD version. That's what a live is for! And OR did all of that... And more! Makes me wish I was there..
All in all, it was a pretty unique single from Orange Range. :wink2:
