Hmmm... i hate to use these kind of words, but many chinese ppl are now referred to as "chinks" its not nearly as offensive as it used to be but i find it awkward being called one....
Chink was once a very racsist term to make fun of chinese people, like the word (excuse me for this) 'nigger', referring to ppl of african american background. now 'that' N word is used widely by ppl referring to themselves and friends. Its lost all offensive meaning. the word 'queer' was once a very offensive term used by straight people referring to homosexuals. Now many homosexuals call them selves queer ie. the hit TV show "Queer eye for the straight guy"... The word queer has lost its profanity and offensive-ness. Now to my point, has the word "Chink" lost all offensiveness aswell? I hear some of my friends referring to themselves as 'chink' and theres always lee hom's copyrighted saying "Chinked out"... is this the next 'nigger, (Sorry), and queer?
(I hope i haven't offended anyone)

Queer nowaday has been replaced by "gay". The word "chink" is derived from the stereotype of asians having small eyes. I hate the stereotype of having small eyes. There are some with small eyes, but China is a very diverse country.
To me, chink just means chinese guy/girl. If someone calls me a chink I'd probably just walk away. No point fighting an idiot.

Chink is meant to be a derogative term. It hasn't evolved as much as "nigger" and "queer" because those of whom internalized these words and called themselves nigger or queer take away the negativity of them. However, Wang Lee Hom has coined the term "chinked-out" as a start of doing the same thing. This style is a blending of chinese culture and pop culture. Since chink partly refers to the Chinese as being backwards, he's kinda saying that these two cultures can mix well together.
"Chinked out"... is this the next 'nigger, (Sorry), and queer?
It may well be..

If you ask me, the word"nigger" is still offensive. Only idiots call themseleves that. As for me, I don't want to be called that by people of my own race, or anyone else for that matter. People make the mistake of thinking that Black people don't mind that word anymore. But if someone calls me that, my blood will boil in the worst way.
As for the word "chink" I think that word is offensive as well. Because it is making fun of the facial features of another race. These things I do not find exceptable. No matter how much people say that, "chink", "Nigger", or "queer", is acceptable terms. They derived from hatred, and or still used by some for hatered. So to me I will never find these terms as acceptable.
Don't think I've heard someone use the n-word directly to someone, for example "nigger, come here" for example.... mainly just been a general thing like "meeting my niggers later"... non-confrontational sorta thing.

3. Slang. coin or ready cash.
got that from dictionary.com. honestly i'm fine with the word chink, how are they honestly going to make fun of chinks. i mean we have it the best, we go the best stereotypes. smart, money, all the chicks, etc. but when someone calls me a chink i dont really care, i mean why would i just get offended by a word thats slang for my nationality. i would just simply call them back what they are. (ex. beaner, redneck, etc.)

OMG I don't know what to say. My sister's nickname is Chinks. LOL.
Okay back to your question. Basically, I don't think I'll get offended if someone calls me that. I know I'm an idiot, but still, somehow it doesn't seem toa ffect me. I'ts not because I'm good-tempered or anything, but basically I don't think I find harm in that word. I guess it's because I don't have enough understanding of that word? :|

Chinks are slang words that, like other slang words, can be taken in different ways. If you think its a pejorative and offensive, then it is. If you think ur ok with that and the speaker did not intentionally mean to offend, then its ok.
Stereotypes are also like that, you fall into it or you dun.

hmm..well i dont really think much of the word as an offense racial word as it used when it was probably used harsly back in the 1940s-50s. but for me i would probably use it rarely and use the word 'chinky' to describe umm my friend's eyes. but really it just depends.
i don't think chink is offensive. i use it all the time. eg. "chink school", "chinky shops" etc.etc. my friends don't find it offensive either. it's only rude if u take it as that but i don't. nothing wrong with it imo.

I really don't like the word chink. I just think it is inherently offensive. I never use the words chink, nigger, gooks, spicks etc. I think it lacks respect even if used casually.

I don't use racial terms. I learned my lesson a while back when I used one and got a beastly referral. Anyways, Chink isn't used on an everyday basis where I live but if it is used offensively I brush it aside and could care less. It's just a word.

I've known people to use it to refer to cuisine, culture etc. but not actually to the Chinese themselves. Though I cannot answer if I find it offensive to myself since I'm not Chinese/Asian, but I generally don't like the term and wouldn't use it myself.

I wouldn’t risk looking like I’m anti asian people…especially in this forum  especially with the asian gangs around

i dont think its that derogatory, although its still not a nice way of naming azns.
i have heard it said a few times by people around, but its mostly used by azns to desbribe themselves. (i dont do it though). i dont think there's much wrong with it as i know that they arent demeaning themselves, but it just makes it acceptable for other people to use it in a degrading way if you use it everyday.
this being said, i dont get offended. like fearless said, its just a word..

Depends on who says it. If it's some stupid young white guy, I'll kick his ass. If it's an old man, I generally chalk it up to senility (hey, they're dying soon anyways, why should I care?). If my friends, or another asian, say it, I don't especially care. I'll call them it right back (in a joking way, of course).

The word Chink is still very offensive, If i was called that i would take offense, but it really depends on who is doing the calling. like kendotiger said, if it was my friend, i wouldnt take much offense, and would consider it a joke. but if some white guy calls me that, hes probably gonna get a broken jaw. but then again, im really sensitive to stuff like that. i even take offense to the word "oriental" but then again the old white guy describing the asian girl, probably grew up using the word so whatever...

i will feel weird and uncomfortable if some1 called me a chink...it sounds as if the person is belittling me...sometimes in S'pore, if your chinese sounds good, ppl will say u r veri "cheena", which i also think is very rude to say so....

I think it all depends on the motives of whoever said it. It's not about the actual word, it's about what message the speaker is trying to protray via the word.
I mean if they mean it in non-confrontational way, it's ok. There are plenty of people at my school who call each other "bitches".
Chink is just an arbitrary series of letters, if someone says it with no ill harm then I think it shouldn't be of any harm. I would much rather someone call me "chink" on a basis of pure slang, than have someone call me Chinese while connecting a plethora of derogative stereotypes to the word.

I agree with your opinion. In the end, it really comes down to who said it. If it is used in a derrogative way, then we have a problem. If it is used by my friends, I probably wouldn't mind. Like you said, everyone goes around calling people "bitches" and I feel that word has lost most of its meaning. Like the word "bitch", I feel the word "chink" is also going to lose it meaning and end up being a word we use to mock our friends with.

You know what?! I always hear that about the chinese having small privates. But I think that is a myth, because men are all different, and you can't really judge a whole race as having, less of something then anyone else. That is such a stupid rumor. I think that it is only ignorent people who say things like this.

Glad you punched him in the ribs. If I was you, I wouldn't have stopped there but instead whooped his @$$ just so he will know never to call a Asian "stupid". Have nothing against them calling me a chink but when someone tags on a "stupid asian" comment, then that is crossing the line. I also hate stereotypes and hate those that mock our language. Guess they are just afraid of us and feel inferior to Asians because they can't undersatnd what we are saying.

It was determined that when erect, a Chinese male was less than half an inch* shorter than the average White male penis. It is probably more of them "guessing" based on the height difference.
I don't think it is because of envy, more likely, it is based on fear of difference. Most racial slurs are based off of a lack of knowledge/understanding for that race. People fear what they do not know.

Hm, the n word in reference to African Americans is usually only positive when said by friends to friends.
even though i am not chinese, i have friends that are, and when someone calls one of them a "stupid ******* chink" i get very upset. i don't think i can see it in a positive light. i've not heard leehoms song; maybe hearing it would shed some new light. until then, i won't much like people who use the term.

To me being black the N word is not acceptable at all. No matter wether it is being used by friends or not. People always make that mistake "Oh they don't mind being called the N word, because they use it on eachother all the time." Then they make the mistake of thinking all black people use the word in a positive way, and feel they can use it too. Well only ignorant people call themselves that. I wish someone would com up to me and call me the N word. It would be the last thing that they say. Because I would make it to where their mouths would have to be wired shut!! Don't get me wrong, I'm not a violent person, I just sound like one!!:D LOL

Sugar&Spice: are you African American? i didnt know there were non-Asians on this site.
anyways, i wouldn't have first hand experience of knowing what it feels like to be called a "nigger", but the i think the term is definitely more offensive and pejorative compared to "chink". this is because of the history behind its usage, and the context in which it was used, eg while the African Americans were still slaves to the Whites.
Therefore, i don't think "chink" is something that offends me immensely because i rarely hear it these days. It might be the school i go to or something (80% Asian), but i can't remember the last time i was called one. Has it gone out of use as a racial slur elsewhere too?

Countess- Yup I'm Afican American. There are like 1% of non asian members here.
Your right. The history behind the word "nigger" is a very painful one. So to hear the word is very degrading, and hurtful When people say it, I get very angry. But what makes me angrier, is the fact the other African Americans have picked it up and have used it in everyday speech. That to me is so ignorent. And it starts to in other peoples eyes, seem like the ok thing to say. How wrong they are.
"Chink' dose not have the history that "nigger" has, but to me it is still something hateful. Used to make fun of someones racial features(their eyes), looking down on them because they are different.
This shows a lack of racial tolerence, and I just don't approve of any term that is used to degrade another race. Because all races are beautiful in their own way. But I guess that is just my opinion.

considering i go to a school where the majority of students are asian, and the majority of those asians are chinese.. the word "chink" doesn't seem quite racist..
this is due to the fact that my chinese friends refer to themselves as "chink" and to them, it's just a shorter way of saying chinese.. and even though i'm not chinese, i use the word "chink" to refer to my friends..
although, i do know some people that hold a look of disdain when they call someone else "chink".. but it's these people that believe that it's an insult that look foolish, as if someone calls me "chink", i take it as a compliment, because my friends are awesome, and while i'm proud to be filo, it's not a bad thing to be called "chink" in my eyes =)

Well the "N' word is the nickname for your homies if your black. But let another nationality come in & say it.You'll get a bullet so deep in you that your next generation will feel it.:excited:
Same thing with homosexuals.I believe today "fag" is the offensive word. They can say it to eachother, but let a straight guy say it & he'll get a make over so fast that his son will be gay.My best cousin & friend is gay & I always have to defend him also.Love you James.:D
Now with chink. It still has power & as an asian american. It still offends me.Because it's not just directed at Chinese people, but at all asian people. Many people who are not asian claim that we all look alike anyways. When another nationality says chink, they're trying to degrade the whole asian race in my opinion.:-x

im not trying to sound racist now but why does the term 'nigger' get referred to as the 'n' word or 'n****r*' as if its like forbidden to say but the word 'chink' is not like the 'c' word or something.. they r both as offensive as each other in my opinion so why not? and same for the word 'jap' as well (which i only found out was a racist term a few days ago)
i hate hearing these words being used, people should start to respect others' races and call them by their ethnicity group name.. i.e. chinese, indian, asian or whatever.. or just dont say anything at all!
ohhh and 'paki' is just as bad! uhhhhh.. i hate all form of racism! ¬¬
and everytime i hear the word chink.. i have this feeling this image in my head that they are alsoo mimicking the slitty eyes or doing some kung-fu moves and making bruce lee noises or something along those lines.. which really annoys me bad!
i hate it even more when chinese people refer to themselves as chinks.. i dont know why but maybe because ive been brought up to think that chink is a racist term and shouldnt be used by chinese people because that would be being racist to themselves which doesnt make sense.. ><

I had never heard the word before until I started listening to LeeHom, and even then I didn't know what it was until I saw an interview. I thought it meant something else...but then again, I'm not Asian. I wouldn't use anything that can be taken as a racist slur, really.
I've never heard of any real equivalent for white people, probably because I'm from the US and most people here are white (or "Caucasian," which we don't generally call ourselves). I really can't relate, though I feel that a lot of people have this stereotype of ignorant white people because our media is stupid. (BTW, my family's been in the US for generations. I am such a mix of different nationalities that I don't really look like I'm from any particular place, so nationality isn't a matter for me, either, and won't be unless I leave the country. It's obvious I'm American.) Maybe if I leave the country someday, I'll have to worry more about discrimination and slurs.

For white people, I've only heard cracker. Maybe gringo and guido but I see it usually used in a joking manner. Honky was used on SNL. Foreign countries use Yankee. Not sure if that offends anyone when used in normal conversation.
"Nigger" is a troublesome word in America because of the history of blacks and whites. Other terms would be "spook" or "porch monkey". Heck, if you say black, some people find it offensive.
There's way worse things than "paki". Anyone that comes from the Middle East is usually either "Arab" or "terrorist". "Raghead" isn't as common in my area, but it's used.
More examples:
Dune coon
Hajji/Haji (military term for enemy combatant, otherwise it's just someone who completes the journey to Mecca)
Sand nigger
Towel Head (similar to raghead)
Camel Jockey
"Gook" is a derogatory term for a Korean. Some take it as a joke, but others don't.

For white people, I've only heard cracker. Maybe gringo and guido but I see it usually used in a joking manner. Honky was used on SNL. Foreign countries use Yankee. Not sure if that offends anyone when used in normal conversation.
No one uses "cracker" in my area, though we used it as the name for an albino snake in one of my high school science classes, and we use "Yankee" in different ways in the southern part of the US. We only use it to refer to Northerners, but it could only ever refer to Americans. I've never heard of "Honky."
"Gringo" only ever refers to white people from the US. My friends call me "gringa," but only jokingly, of course, since I speak Spanish fluently and some Spanish-speakers think I'm a native speaker, not American. I don't really find it offensive, just funny, and most of the people I know use that Mexican-American War story to explain where it comes from.

Cracker is probably outdated. Might've held more relevance 100 years ago.
Honkey might've only been a '70s term, and really only targets a small group of white-skinned people (Hungarians in Chicago). In retaliation for the word nigger, honkey was coined by the Black Panthers and some other groups. Not exactly derogatory, because few are offended by the word.

I thought this forum was about the word " Chink"? It has totally got off subject matter.
Any negative name given to anyone that is not a persons given name from their parents or ralatives, is just plain prejudice. There is nothing funny about it. So the word Chink is not acceptable in any shape or form, whether it is from someone Asian or other. It still does not make it right, nor will it ever be acceptable.

The word chink itself sounds kinda cute. Yet, I wouldn't be offended by being called one if it wasn't meant to be offensive. If it was, then I'd secretly get mad and walk away. I guess it depends on the context.
