heh....this is like asking, how long is a piece of string¿
[12 inches!¡0
btw....it really depends on what you want to do....
i'm from the university of melbourne, so anything i say will be biased
but on the other hand...i really like my university, it has a nice comforting setting
plus lotsa international students do commerce here =)
ah well..a guys gotta dream

lol..yeah...agree with vashdestampede...lol...
depends on what you wanna do...i've heard lots of good things about melbourne....except for that the fact that its in melbourne...i'm sure that its great......i only really kno about uni's in nsw...so i guess it depends what you want to do and where do you want to do it....
if you're after commerce/accounting....uni new south wales is better than usydney...i think :glug:

UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY!!!!!!!
i think it's supposed to be more theory based....as opposed to Uni of Tech Sydney, which is obviously where you'd wanna go for tech based courses and more work experience.
i heard wollongong is good too. it won uni of the year for the last two years or something.

depends on what you wanna do...i've heard lots of good things about melbourne....except for that the fact that its in melbourne...
that reminds me of something...it actually is in melbourne...like in melbourne...technically it's in the CBD of the city of melbourne...and i like that too!¡
plus there seems to be lotsa bars around the area it's easier to get everywhere....=)
(too bad i don't like beer)
if you want to do med/commerce...got to unimelb
it/computer science will be rmit/swinburne
ah...commerce is monash...as well
everything else i'm not sure

11-08-2003, 08:17 AM
it depends what your studying to find the best. but if you can get hold of the UAC ( universities admissions centre) guide, it will have a whole range of uni's in nsw for you to choose from and the subjects they teach there.

Actually I heard medicine at Monash is better, because you get more 'hands on' experience, especially because of Monash Hospital.. Melbourne is a lot more theory-based. But anyway, I think for any course, most people would rather go to Melbourne over Monash, RMIT, etc etc, because of the 'prestige'.

11-08-2003, 08:42 AM
Yeah medicine is better at Monash and the course length is shorter and it's easier to get into than Melbourne.

isn't that bad¿ i mean, wouldn't it be better if it was harder to get into¿
oh well...that reminds me about building bridges....next time you drive across the bridge, just think...the company that provided the cheapest tender was the one that mad the bridge =)

hmmm. what about media and communication studies?
i'm a media and comm student, what kind of universities are known for their communication studies.... ?
xiaoli
11-08-2003, 11:01 AM
I don't think any of them are really 'known' for anything specific. When I went to the Uni Melb open day, they said that they're most renowned for their arts courses though, that's why the scores to get into them are so high. For high school students, you need a score of like, 98 to get into Media & Comm at Melbourne.. what the!! So much higher than at Monash, it's only about 88.. but you can only major in that under Bachelor of Arts

so is there anyone from RMIT?

ummm..yeah RMIT aint the best uni but its pretty good in terms of teaching.... but the environment isnt givin u any feeling of school at all....especially the business building where i study.. all i can see is concrete and grey paints..i prefer the environment of Monash......anyway i never been to Melb. uni...tho better go and hang out there too  lol..
unsw is the best in my opinion, but yeh it does depend on what you're planning to do.
media and comms in best in UTS i think.
usyd is only good for law and non-language arts. they're commerce and languages aren't that great. umelb is good for commerce.

i don't think this question is as easy to answer as it sounds? it all depends on what you mean by "good". if you want a place that teaches really well, then sometimes you have to ignore the surroundings. if you want prestige, then maybe you have to ignore the fact they treat you like shit.
it's all a bit subjective but i think it depends on what course you are doing and what you're looking for in a uni. if you want everything about the uni to be good, then you're dreaming. that'll happen when pigs fly.
vashdestampede
12-04-2003, 10:09 PM
i think the science students at melbourne succesfully surgically attached seagull wings to the pigs at melbourne uni =)
they're flying everywhere -.-"
UNSW is supposed to be the best university in australia.. i live in melb and thought monash and melb were pretty cool.. my mum is hardly ever impressed and when we went over there to check it out last w/e, she was very impressed!! i think it's got a lot of funding compared to monash or melb uni.. but the best uni in victoria would be melb.. it's got a good rep and ur more likely to be employed after completing ur degree.. whereas monash has new stuff like the synchotron which is maaaad..

i dont know much about uni.s not in NSW, but the three main ones that i considered when applying was sydney, nsw and uts. the way all the open days made me think was that uts was more technology based. sydney has good science resources. dont know about nsw... it looks all hi tech-ish.
transport wise, uts is easiest to get to coz its near the station. sydney has quite a hike, but nsw has a long bus ride. me and my friends have the same argument every get together. sydney has grass and a nice atmosphere, uts has more entertainment things, nsw looks better.

12-15-2003, 12:52 PM
it mainly depends on the ummm the course you want to do right??.. like it's always best to get the UAC guide... cause it realli assists you in making sure you end up at the right place!
adnam8
12-15-2003, 01:36 PM
the uac guide doesnt actually say much about the uni. just gives u a really brief outline of courses. if u want good assistance, id advise highly to go to open days and ask all the questions ur wondering about. even if u think theyre silly.
vashdestampede
12-16-2003, 01:02 AM
yeah...and don't forget to grab the balloons while you're at it
that way...if you wondered if you asked all your questions...you can check your balloons...and if you had a question for a faculty and you have that balloon...then you asked that question!
adnam8
12-16-2003, 11:53 AM
haha, better yet, u could get the faculty books.. that way, if u forgot an answer to a question, u could look it up!
uts has free food and drinks btw =)

I want to take medicine and I'm planning to take unipath/foundation next year. So... monash is the best for medicine? How about other uni?
How about UNSW? Newcastle? University of Melbourne? University of Sydney?
I'm sorry if I ask too much question  but I really need your help ^^
Thanks
edit:
adnam8> I think you're right! I asked the UAC people and i think it was useless. They did not even know which is the best uni for medicine. Then they asked me to go to this uni... that uni.

well, u can go directly to medicine in UNSW, whereas most other unis u have to take as a post grad.
im in medical science right now. i think USYDs facilities are good. my friend is doing med sci at UTS, and from what she says, it sounds like USYD is a bit better. but then she doesnt study, so it might not be an accurate comparison.
u still have some time before uni, so u should go to open days and ask people at the uni. these days, theres no prerequisites, so subjects from highschool dont eliminate u from choices. but then theres still assumed knowledge. the best way is to go to open days and ask questions..
imo, unsw is the best uni for med. i know usyd has good facilities for science in general but i'm not sure how well they do in medicine in particular. unsw has a much better atmosphere too i think, usyd is generally too hot when its hot or incredibly muddy when its a little wet. but i've only been there a few times so don't take my word for it. open days are useful coz u get both students and teachers there willing to answer questions.
i thought chem was a pre-requisite for medicine? either that or at least 2units of science?
adnam8
12-30-2003, 01:38 PM
i dont know about unsw. then again, medicine is a post grad for us, so thered be pre requisites. i think that the atmosphere between unsw and usyd are quite the same. i dont know about muddy tho..? my friend at unsw says that theres a section that floods easy, so u gotta walk in knee deep water. ^^ that would be cool! when its hot, the hike to uni is a pain, but apart from that, its the same as unsw. uts is the best for weather. all bulidings, so weather is regulated! haha.

hey everyone...
ill be going to aussie for my final yr in comp science in 2004.....well...problem is...my close fren who will be going with me intends to go to sydney (UNSW or UTS) ...while i'll much prefer melbourne...(cos i have more frens in melbourne) ...
so...umm..which uni in melbourne is good for comp science? im hoping to present to my fren a list of good melbourne unis so she'll go there with me!! :brows:

Winston, ill be at usyd! my friends doing comp science. but shes a bludger. does things the night before, and yet she still passes =\ AND got a HD! she was like that in highschool too.
for first yr, i did all the sciences, chem, phys, bio, and 2 maths. we dont really start med sci till 2nd yr. so 1st yr, its basically a science degree. 2nd yr, all my subjects are laid out for me. and then i pick majors for nxt year.
im gonna find some work experience for this year, so that i know what its like. i dont really know whats install for me yet :glug: , so im kinda worried, but then, ive always enjoyed science.. so it should be alright
i think medical science is research in the field of medicine? i.e. researching cures, diseases, etc, science research in anything medical-related. that's the impression i got from reading the brochures anyway.
i'm gonna go to unsw for 2004, this year. heaps of my friends are going to, so it'll be fun

hmmm...this is a lil off topic...but if i don't say it here...i might forget....
the way i see it...if i keep thinking there COULD be a better uni out there...then i might end up losing the GREAT uni i have now...i'd never enjoy the experience...
hmmm...would you say that about love¿
it's like going out with someone...if you're always thinking...there might be a better looking/more amusing person than this...hmmm...i wonder where she is...then it'll never work out...
that's how i see it anyways...
adnam8
01-14-2004, 03:23 PM
yea, that makes plenty of sense. ur gonna love the uni u go to, or atleast learn to love it, coz u see it all the time.
with love.. well.. i took a huuuuuggggeee break on relationships wondering about that. i actually asked everyone if they would leave their partner for someone else, and it came up as 50/50.
the way i see it is that u should be happy with what u have because at the time, its the best option.. kinda thing. if ur with someone, and u feel that its special, why ruin it by wondering? ive known people who ended relationships for things they thought were better but ended up with nothing
 lifes always gonna be complicated like this
princess`bobo
01-14-2004, 11:50 PM
adam8:: no offense or anything...but those kinda ppl who reckon they'll leave their partner for someone else totally piss me off....its like, why are u in a relationship then? cos ur insecure and need someone to be there for u so u feel better about urself?
c'mon......relationship is still about commitment and if u got doubts bout it...then its better to be out and in and the sooner the better....
newais onto the topic......^^
i was just gonna say my uni last year sucked.....Flinders Uni of SA.....it was dead......no one there at all except during the first couple of weeks......then everyone just stopped going.....and so i thought, wow i will too........
and it was spread out all over these hills.....so walking to every lesson was painful and breathless.....
not going back there....thank god.....tho i did meet some nice ppl....its about an hour drive from my place and considering how small adelaide is....that means its on the other far side of town....uuuggghh.......!
adnam8
01-15-2004, 10:56 AM
:glug: i wouldnt leave someone for another person! it's like.. trading up  , i mean, if ur gonna do that, ull never have a real relationship.. i have this friend who keeps claiming she found her soulmate, but the thing is, she started stuff with this bf while she was still with the other one. im worried for her, coz shes moving in with the new one after.. couple months, and im thinking, if one guy could end her last relationship, whats to say she wont do it again with a diff guy?
baaack to uni tho.. i think in every uni, the classes start to thin out. like, at the beginning of the year, we were complaining that there weren't enough seats. towards the end, there wasnt enough people! so every sem, we look forward to the lazy people skipping lectures
haha, is there really that many ppl who stop showing up after awhile? it'll be better with the smaller classes, but i guess since you can get most of the lecture info online, ppl are too lazy to turn up.
i've been wandering though, they don't really care who walks in and out of the lectures right, so is there anything to stop you from going to lectures out of personal interest? theres some subjects that i'm interested in, but not to actually study it as part of my degree, so do lecturers care if they find random ppl walking in to their lectures?
vashdestampede
01-22-2004, 11:42 PM
nope....
we have summer lectures at unimelb...and a friend of mine is going to all the lectures so he can learn all the stuff b4 we learn it in smester 1....even though he's not enrolled!
lol, that's great! lots of ppl would probably do that if it didn't mean cutting into their holiday times.
OLive_aNN
01-25-2004, 05:12 AM
vashdestampede> If you take the summer leactures, can you graduate faster?
loko> does UNSW have summer lectures?
I heard that Uni of Sydney has summer lectures so ppl can graduate faster.
vashdestampede
01-25-2004, 10:35 PM
yeah...cos if you take em in summer....that's one less you have to take in semester...
but it's full fee upfront (not HECS)
i don't think unsw has summer lectures - only bridging courses. so if you fail a subject, that just means you have to do it again, and you have to pay for it as well.
edit: actually unsw does have summer lectures, but only for some faculties. arts does for languages at least, but the commerce and eco faculty don't.

lol usyd's ok, even though i go there, but it has it's bad points, it all depends, i only like it because it's close to a train station, and i really don't want to go to UTS, it's not what i see a uni to be their teaching is very different and it's something i don't support. UNSW is good but i can't be bothered for the extra bus ride, since i live like an hour train ride to central anyways, on top of that, 1/2 an hr bus trip will kill me, badly.

Dude....check this out..!!!
http://www.unsw.edu.au/news/pad/articles/2005/oct/Times_Engineer_Rank.html
Actually it depends on what course u're willing to take....if u're lookinf for engineering, then UNSW is the way to go......
I was previously from from trinity college of melbourne university......
Overall, it's all really depend on how u look into a uni....anyway, if u're in melb...i suggest Melb Uni to go.....especially for commerce and medical(they're the best for medical!!)...if u're in sydney, either sydney uni or UNSW.....well, i think UNSW has more asian than sydney U....
Swinburne & RMIT in melbourne is good for their design......Monash engineering & commerce is also not that bad....
Well...happy thinking....hope this'll help you...
cheers,

well having only been to syd uni and having graduated from it....i'd say syd uni.....=) it's undergone a few renos since i started there but it looked quite nice towards the end of my time and when i last visited....
I remember when they were building the "new" manning building...golly..there was like a hole in the ground for about 2 years... not a pretty site..=)

sydney uni is d best and probably macquarie and nsw is really good as well.. buh i prefer sydney LOL
umm well the rankings (throughout the world) for last year showed that.. university of melbourne was ranked highest in australia...
my friend sent me the file.. so that's all i have but yeah.. here's a link (http://www.freewebtown.com/aehli/top_unis.aspx.htm) for it..
i live in sydney.. but seemingly most asian parents prefer unsw..
hehe well depends on what you wanna do anyhows..

oh yeah...unimelb rocks ^_^
this test also takes into account size of the uni...so those massive american unis get an unfair advantage T_T
wow i can't believe this post is still going, considering it started over a year ago!!
hmm like alot of others have said, the best uni to be at really depends on ur degree and personality i think. like ANU is pretty well respected internationally but its in lol old Canberra. and UNSW is great for commerce and engineering but has become Chinatown 2...
so it just depends on the person really.

i rekon the best university in australia would have to be either UTS, University of new south wales or university of sydney, but well my opinions are proberly UTS is the bestest of them all.

i think itd have to be unsw..either htat ... or syd...
but i suppose it really depends on what courses you are comparing..
becuase unsw provides courses that usyd doesnt.. and vice versa..
say for instance unsw provides optometry where as usyd doesnt..
and usyd provides veterinary/animal sciences which unsw doesnt..
so its hard to say.. but i prefer unsw...(also considering im a sydney sider.. so i cant really judge vic unis.. or unis from sa qld etc..)

My opinion is, if you're smart, any uni will get you to where you want to be. But also selecting a well known uni will be a bonus, just in case you find a prospective employer who's so shallow and select candidates based on their institutions. I go to USYD, it certainly doesn't have the best computers or labs for my degree (Computer Science).
I know for one that, a fast computer or a sexy lab won't help me get a good job, it's still up to me. I think it's more to how well you do. All institutions teach similar things. They focus around a particular area in the domain you are studying in. It's a style i suppose, but i don't ever believe there's something called a better uni because people say they are the best in australia or whatever, that's a load of shit. I chose USYD because i can get off redfern and run to it if i'm late for class, for UNSW i can't for UTS i can as well. I chose USYD, because it has a diverse environment (AND WE'RE NOT SNOBS :@).
UNSW is a little too asian for me (yes it is ironic, i am asian myself, and yes other unis have asians too, but i've seen UNSW have more), but not being racist, a little too much of it will kill me.

Bit late into the convo. I think the Best Aussie Uni would be ANU (Australian National Uni) or UTS since UTS is like really hard to get into or something.

UTS is rubbish in my thoughts.
It's geared to the industry (a lot like it but i hate that).
It's relatively the same to get in. Often easier if you enter via the UTS Insearch method.

What do you mean by "geared to the industry"
I don't think it's really fair to say that it's rubbish. have you studied there before? If not, I don't think it's fair to make sweeping statements without first hand experience.
I go to UTS and I don't think it's rubbish. I'm not biased or anything, but I think it's a relatively good institution to study at...I'm not going to comment on other unis because I've only ever been at UTS. If a reputable uni like UTS is 'rubbish', then perhaps I should opt for something like tafe or a private college?
and to the previous poster, it's not a hard uni to get into.

lol maybe i was over saying it's rubbish. But the things they teach you is of relevance to the industry right now. Although it is good in ways, but you won't have the solid foundation from the ground up. But this does depend on what course you do, i'm judging this primarily off their Computing courses, which is like that.

Ahh i see then. I haven't got a clue about computing/IT.
Speaking of uni, we go back soon. Back to the never-ending stress of assessments and exams. Cramming 12 weeks worth of lecture notes and massive texts books into 2 nights. Brilliant. I can't wait.

It's meant to be my final year too, except I transferred to a different course, so I'm there for another 2 years. I would have loved to graduate at 20. what an accomplishment... shame that's down the drain.

I reckon ANU is probably the best Uni in Australia, its ranked like top 20 in the world in multiple rankings lists. The only reason that the ANU UAI's are comparatively lower than say Uni of NSW and Sydney Uni, is that its in CANBERRA. i mean, honestly, there are about 100 people living in that place (no offence).
I put ANU on my preference list, near the middle for B psychology. i guess i'll have to board there if i go. apparently its one big party because there are sooooo many boarders and there arent many locals. anyone got any exp/stories to share?

Hmmm it really depends on what you want to study actually. I'm in UQ doing a Bachelor of Science (graduating soon actually). I did qualify for the other unis like ANU and Monash but settled for UQ in the end coz I heard that it's pretty good for biological sciences.
Exams are in a week! I expect it's the same with you guys.. :P
