Hmm.. did you have any problems like this in the past Jenn?
It might be because the file format on iTunes cannot be played on the iPod, which is the least unlikely of reasons, but anyhow, check up on the format of the songs, I think iPod plays only mp3, aac and mp4 files (for iPod video).
The easiest way first is still to reboot your iPod, which is to press and hold the 'Menu' and the center button together until you see the apple logo. If that doesn't work, try connecting your iPod to the power source (not the one via the USB Cable) and reset the iPod using the same method above.
Another possible reason maybe because the location of the songs on your iTunes cannot be found on your computer (that may be due to you changing the location where your iTunes music library is), and thus, iTunes will not be able to locate those files to transfer it into the iPod.
To check the location of your music library, click 'Edit' --> 'Preferences' --> 'Advanced' Tab --> 'General' Tab.
Hope that helps, try it and see if it works yeah. If it doesn't, then I'll see if I can help on that.

whenever i had problems with my ipod (nano/shuffle) i always started with reseting it using the software that apple gives out. Resets it to the factory settings. Then i just redo all the settings again and it starts working fine.
trouble shooting ipods are kinda flakey sometimes, so a basic reset usually fixes everything

i had the same problem before. my problem was the connection, my wire was a little twitchy so i just got another one and it worked. oh another solution might be to uninstall the driver and reinstall it.

It's the drivers/software, wires, or even the ports to connect. If I had problems with drivers/software, I usually reinstalled itunes and the drivers. For wires, I just switched from USB to firewire, but new ipods nowadays only include a USB cable. For ports, I just changed ports. The problems were solved. Resets also work, but I rarely did them.
There are times when my iPod won't connect, so I just hit it. It worked, but if your iPod is new, I wouldn't risk it. Mine is old, and now broken, but not due to me hitting it. The files were corrupted so it's now a paperweight.

thanks guys for your suggestions (=
stitch- well, i've had problems with it in the past but nothing like this. like when i first got my ipod, it worked great where i would connect my ipod to my computer, it'd transfer al lthe songs and then disconnect itself. several months later, i would have the click the eject button for it to disconnect. and now it just doesnt even transfer songs.
i've tried resetting my ipod a couple times in hopes that it would fix the problem, but that doesnt work. i also tried your suggestion about checking the location of some of my music. well i think one of the reasons why this problem occurred is because my cousin put some music from his iTunes library into my iPod, so the music is on my ipod, but i dont have those files on my iTunes library. could that be a reason why it's messing up?
whomp- i recently updated my apple software, so iono if that'd be the problem. unless they're changing their software often =/
chineseguyjl- i'm technologically impaired so i dont know what a driver is or how to reinstall it.. hehe.
orangeman- well.. i've dropped my ipod numerous times.. i dont think it'd be healthy for my ipod to be messed up even more than it already is, haha. so i'll have to get new ports and usb cords and stuff to fix it? hm..
i went to the apple store and asked them about the problem, they said i hafta reset my ipod completely and erase all my stuff then put it back on there again. i havent tried it yet though. my computer's hard drive decided to get corrupted last week so i dont have my computer at the moment.

Jen, an iPod is designed in such a way that it only transfer music from one specific music library. That may be the reason behind your iPod going bonkers. Because yout iTunes is also designed to sync with a specific iPod. If I'm not wrong, a library can share music up to 5 other PCs/iPod. But after that, I think it gets locked down if I'm not wrong.
But what the staff from Apple told you is the best solution. Do a backup of the files currently in the iPod, and then reset the entire software of the iPod using the iPod updater. Choose erase and not update. If that doesn't work, then the problem lie beyond software. At which state, its best to send your iPod for servicing.
