After more than a year of anticipation, F.I.R. is finally back with their brand new dazzling album, Flight Tribe. Get ready to be rocked by them in the Asian music industry!

Since their hot debut same-named album back in 2004, F.I.R. has been very busy producing their songs for themselves as well as for other artistes. The result for their 2005 release, Unlimited, was not as great. However, with their latest album released on 28th July 2006, it has received an overwhelming response by having the number of pre-orders soaring to the highest record of 1.5 million copies!

F.I.R. used to be criticized for being the Chinese version of Do As Infinity, a Japanese 2-men 1-woman band that was disbanded some time ago. However, F.I.R. has completely overcome that shadow. With their new images packaged with their latest album, it sure contains the “wow” factor, with greater anticipation for their songs. This album has impressed me to the extent that I’ve been drowning myself under the sea of their varying styles of songs since I got hold of their album.

As we journey down the flow of tracks…

Track 2 presents a high and refreshing song that sure brings you a smile on your face, especially when you are about to face the hectic days once you wake up every morning. That’s none other than Get High! With a mixture of rock and street dance genres of music, DJ Wayne’s rap collaborates with F.I.R.’s first ever dance moves in the music video. However, the MV doesn’t really show evidences of having distinct dance moves by F.I.R. They are merely jumping around, swaying their hands and bodies and playing with their instruments.

Track 3 brings you the oriental-themed Rain Sakura (Yu Ying Hua) collaborated with rock elements, composed by Ah Qin. Surely, it is a breakthrough. However, the tune tends to sound a bit repetitive sometimes, which explains why I get tired of this song easier then others.

Track 4, Day and Night (Tian Tian Ye Ye), presents a first ever sentimental duet by Faye and Ah Qin. Frankly speaking, Ah Qin vocal really impressed me. Mixing with Faye’s vocal, it really suits the romantic atmosphere of the song. It also features LeAnn Rimes soothing vocal at the start of the song, which was pre-recorded back in America. Another breakthrough, I must say. F.I.R.’s future would be even brighter if they can produce more of this type of songs in the future, other than their trademark rock genre that they have preserved since their debut.

The winter-feeling Track 6 is none other than Artic Circle (Bei Ji Quan). A sense of sorrow and regret engulfs within. You might think that this is the continuation of Let Love Go (Ba Ai Fang Kai), which is the 6th track in their second album upon reading till the middle of this sentence. But, no, the music arrangement is completely different. Do have a listen and you’ll know.

Sentimental Love (Juan Lian), Track 9 of the album, brings you a mid-tempo rock ballad. It doesn’t really have a dramatic chorus unlike other songs. However, I love the way in which the song is arranged. I believe that it has a deep meaning behind the lyrics of this song, as it was reported that Faye sobbed halfway through when recording this song, as well as when they were filming the music video.

Other songs are also must-listens, with the soothing You Really Love Him (Ni Hen Ai Ta, Track 7) and The Person I Love The Most (Wo Zui Ai De Ren, Track 11). 1234567 (Track 8) wins the title of having the most interesting song title I’ve ever heard so far. Whereas I don’t care (Track 10) presents the aggressive side of F.I.R., with the heavy metal genre. Not forgetting the overrated Flight Tribe (Fei Xing Bu Luo, Track 5), of which I was blown off by Faye’s super high and powerful vocal, especially in the chorus part.

I strongly recommend this album. Gone were the days of the Wo Men De Ai-type-of-song era. Their last album was a sort of a continuation of their first album, so the style of their music remained the same at that time. Whereas their latest album presents their revamp of their musical styles, and I must say that it is great to venture into different musical grounds to try out new things. To ensure the band’s survival, F.I.R. should continue to explore new areas of music, so that they can continue to bring us more breakthroughs in their productions in the future.

Get High sounds like an extremely familiar song. I swear I've heard it before, not that I am saying FIR is copying anyone, but it seriously sounds like the style Korean pop songs of a long of songs from the late 90s to 2000. Listen to "As One - Sarang+" or "Diva - I'll get your love" and you will hear lots of similiarities. I still can't put my finger on what song it sounds like, but I think Cat's agreed with me, it sounded like he's heard it before. Not like it really matters or anything, I just thought it would be interesting to note.

Don't get me wrong, I love the song, and I love the album, and its good to see their music evolve, but it just bugs me in the back of my mind. Another thing, maybe its just me, but I loved their Wo Men De Ai songs, so perhaps thats why I can't embrace the change as much as others. =/ Still a great album tho.

Thank you for the review.

Just a few comments though. Your review does seem overly positive. Do you really that it is such a perfect album? Are there areas in which you think FIR could have done better or improve upon? Also, I don't think you can judge the quality of an album by its pre-order sales. It just shows how crazed fans are with FIR that they would buy the album before listening to all their songs first. However, it was an informative statistic! :wink2:

I have yet to listen to the album myself, as I was rather disappointed in their last offering. I couldn't really put my finger to it, I guess as a whole their last album just sounded awkward on many of their songs.

Based on your review, I will definitely check out this album.

i personally like this album.. Track 6 & 9 are my favorites.. Get High is also an amazing song.. Track 4 (which features Leann Rimes) is a nice duet. Overall, the album is as good as their previous ones.. but i'm not into their singing of english songs.. some of them are really off.. like the song I Don't Care.. melody is good but the english rapping/part is really really bad..

I love all the songs! I think they are well written and well arranged. Lots of good pop tunes in it and Get High is lovely!
But... wasn't her singing quite a turn off? Especially on Track 6 (Bei Ji Quan) and Track 9 (Juan Lian). I was playing this album shuffled up with a few other new albums and whenever my player reached their choruses, I have to stop whatever I was doing to check what the high-pitch screeching was all about. In a nutshell: lovely tunes but bad singing.

I finally listened to this album, I can't say I was super impressed, I liked it better than their previous album, it does seem like they're trying to expand their musical horizons more but I find that Faye sings nearly all their songs in the same style and range, it can get bland.

I was impressed with the duet in track 4 but I didn't see the necessity for the LeAnn Rhimes bit, I found it distracting. My favourite track is "I don't care" it's the most different track on the album, Faye tests out different vocal ground, and musically it's more dynamic than most of the tracks on the album.

I never felt F.I.R. was remotely close to Do As Infinity musically so I never liked the comparison, but my problem with F.I.R. is the same problem I had with DAI, I really liked them at first but their music disinterested me the further they got along in their careers, it's not a drop in quality, but more so the fact that their style remains consistent and overall unvaried in my opinion. I think what would help most is if Faye played around with her vocals more, musically, they're already trying to grow, but I need something more varied from Faye to keep my interest

I didnt pay much attention to this album but I still like som songs including:
Flight Tribe (I think its a positive energic track featuring nice tribe-elements which makes this song unique),
Every day and night (its a ok-duet, I dont think Reals vocals are good enough but I agree that this song is hard to sing because Faye has got a high pitch)
and "You really love him" (a really sad touching song. I enjoy the lyrics).
