Hey guys. I was wondering why Google isn't making GMail public! Any comments? And while we're on that subject, does anyone want to send me a GMail invite?

Hmmm, that's a good question. I'm not too sure about that, but I kinda like how you have to get invited to get gmail.
Aw, i was going to send you an invite, but i guess scarletwillow beat me to it! hahah, well enjoy your gmail account! we should become gmail buddies! ;D

eh.. no one has invited me to gmail, but i have a gmail account! when i register, they asked for my cellphone number, and they sent me a code via sms to my cellphone. and then i use that code to register.

i think its like, limited edition bah. because of its gigantic storage quota space, it has to be limited. if it goes public, it will go haywire.

I send gmail account to myself, to create even more gmail accounts. And everytime you do that, you get 8 more invites. I'm so greedy ^^
I think they keep it invite only so they retain good word of mouth, and really, they do have a rather generous quota.
btw, think this should go in Help/Feedback (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=26)... can a super mod move this?

Forgive me for saying so, but all of you guys are wrong.
Each account (that is used regularly) gets 100 invites. So even if you start out with only one person having access to GMail, he/she'll quickly invite a few of their friends, who in turn will do the same, and this will lead to a chain reaction. Hell... at this rate, GMail is the same as being public. Anyone who wants an account can get one.
But you see, behind all this, there is a reason for the invites system.
GMail's invites system restricts spammers from signing up for multiple accounts quickly using a script. With totally open mail servers such as hotmail, spammers can quickly create thousands of accounts in a single day. With GMail, it won't be this easy.
That, my friends, is the reason why GMail keeps an invite system and doesn't make its mail service totally open. But you should know by now that, as I said before, anyone can get a mail account on GMail easily, as long as their intentions aren't malicious.

HAHAHAHAHA~ I can't wait for the "Tech Idiot meets Geek" forum to start. I'm sure you'll be there to illuminate us even more. Plus, my PC has been doing this weird thing whenever I.. *jk*

dunno if this is allowed, but if anyone want gmail, i'm happy to invite, just PM me.
The invatation system started by Gmail was a very smart idea i think, it over toook the whole internet by storm, in matter of month, nearly everyone's got gmail, as the invitation method made the gmail seem exclusive :) very smart :) hehe.

As mentioned, Gmail isn't really private anymore. Chances are you'll know a lot of people who already have it (.. just look at this thread) and they can invite you no problem.
I'm not exactly sure why it's still beta though. I've had my account since it basically opened. I remember winning an Ebay auction for an invite, ha. That was when it was really damn rare to have an account.
it's not even gmail anymore..... it's @googlemail.com
everyone <3ed gmail a while ago for some reason.....
o and i only have 15 invites

There should be a invitation portion on the lower left of your gmail account screen that allow you to invite other people, and show how many remaining invite you have left. (i have included a pic of where it is located) Also, if your friend is in the US, then they can register themselve by having gmail to send them a sms containing a invitation for gmail.

Ooohh, thanks for the info Squall.
Can't quite believe you're back yet.
I think even people with googlemail as their server can receive email with gmail, right?
What I'm saying is that xyz@googlemail should get email that was sent to xyz@gmail.com, right?
If not, that should mean it frees up some screennames for Gmail.

Yes. You can test that out if you have a Gmail account. Try sending it to yournail@googlemail and vice versa, you'll be able to receieve it both ways.
*CRIES* i want a gmail account *sniff sniff* lolz nah but most of my friends have gmail accounts in the UK which is kinda weird... *shrugs*

enjoy the almost unlimit space on gmail!!!
ps if you can't understand chinese, the first link in the email is the link to register for gmail account.

junnleenfaah, i sent one to you as well. just in case josh's chinese one won't work. haha, and you're right. i have a hotmail account but the layout and format bugs me so much. gmail is so much simpler and better.
wow really? i prefer the new hotmail fomat? the livemail!! googlemail is now used for important applications and things ^^.
anyone know why we have different amounts of invites? cuz on googlemail i only have 15 and gmail you say is 100?

Probably because you don't log into it much and you don't use it often. Gmail gives extra invites as a sort of reward for using the service often.

hey now i'm super curious. when i told my friend to sign me up for gmail, it only gave me 2 invites. i thought it would increase over time but its still on at 2 invites. and everybody else is getting 100 invites, so i'm like wtf.

I forgot how many invites I got when I first started to use gmail. But actually dont need invites also can use one mah.. Go sign up, then you'll have to key in ur HP number, then u'll receive a SMS which contains ur invitation code. Then just key in the invitation code and you can proceed to next registration step (filling in personal info).
I like Gmail because it has the POP access. I need not launch my Firefox to check my mail like I used to do last time (Yahoo). What I need to do is just launch my Mozilla Thunderbird (the email client). Mails will be downloaded into my pc and I can read them offline. Dont need to waste time, coz I can keep the emails and read them next time. Isnt it better?? (=

hmm... u can't use pop access with yahoo? i can acutally use pop3 with my yahoo hk email, i think this have to do with where u sign up for the service. anyway, i still prefer yahoo over gmail, and i don't really have any reason for it, it's just that i'm used to yahoo and all, while gmail is a good place for me to use as virtual storage.

When I first got gmail, I had like...10 invites. But now I use it 24/7 because of google talk. Maybe it does have to do with frequent usage. You can pm me too if you want a gmail account~

I remember when Gmail was introduced. Everyone wanted one. I waited on this site for a few days and got one. Man, it was so cool to have one back in 2005. It gradually become popular and grew. Not the fastest, because the rate of new users is still low, maybe due to the registration process. I made like 5 accounts; only using one.
If anyone wants an invite, I'll give 5 or 6. You can use extras as online storage using Xmail Hard drive (https://www.xmailharddrive.com/beta/)
Slow upload speed, but good alternative to backup documents.

You no longer need invites for Gmail...you can sign up for a Google account and bam! You have a gmail account.

I don't like the sign-up process. You have to give them a phone number, then a messeage,....
google has a lot of information on people, last thing it needs is phone numbers.

But as long as you get a invitation to sign up for gmail, you'll never have go give out your phone number.

Since Gmail has been in beta for around 2 years, the only two ways to get it are invites or phone number sign-up. I haven't seen google change or give an alternative process. And they should release gmail out of beta.
