Wakin (aka Zhou Hua Jian) has recently released his new album.
I was just wondering if any if you out there like his recent works? I mean, it is almost certain that most of you out there have heard of Wakin, and his ultra popular songs such as "Make Me Happy, Make Me Sad", "Flowery Heart", "Friends" and several other of his oldies......
He has been around for the longest time, and many people grew up hearing his songs. His concert was the first concert I ever attended, and i was hooked onto his witty banter during the concert. I remember when he used to have so many sold-out concerts in Singapore, and when he had any public appearances, the place was always packed with people.
But what about now? Do you listen to his new songs? His latest is "The Bliss of Suffering Together", and there are many pretty good songs there. Last week, I went to the NKF prevention centre opening ceremony in Sengkang, and he was the special guest there. I would say that there were not many people, but the number was a far cry from the number seen years ago.....
Frankly, I did think he got into an artist rut a while back, during the time when he was churning out too many albums for his own good. But since the album before this one, "Day Lilies", his standard is back. For those who have not heard his music, I would suggest you take a listen to Day Lilies. It is one of the better quality albums among all those pop music that is flooding the music industry now. (I don't include Jay in this music influx, Jay's music has a standard that is a class by itself)
With all the many 'bubble gum' pop music idols being churned out every year, sometimes I lost track of who is who. And as fast as they pop up, some just gets washed away with the tide.
But somehow, Wakin has managed to stay afloat. He tries really hard to reinvent himself, and realises that it is the original folk singer fans wants to see in him. He has since returned to the folk genre, and his music is just simple and pure. from his sings, you can feel his happiness, his sorrow and his pain. Unconsciously, you will be affected by his songs.
Sometimes, this is what music is all about, using the notes and lyrics to touch and move you. Wakin has the ability, by virtue of his expressive voice, Jay has the ability, using the magical power of notes. Since you all are here because you appreciate Jay's music, I would recommend that you would take a listen at Wakin's music too. i recommend "Day Lilies" for the newbies, listen to them in the silence of the night, and let his voice and music touch your heart. For the seasoned Wakin lover, try the latest album "Love Hotel"
Try it and tell me.....
