Required Programs
You need to download 2 programs:
I don't want to give a direct link to the .exe, but if you can't find them, send me a PM
TMPGEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_download.html)
SmartRipper (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm)
(When you install it, the instructions will be in German. But it's not hard. And the program itself will be in English so don't worry.
1st screen - you only have one button so click it
2nd screen - click 'Entpacken' to install to the default directory.
If you want to change directory, click 'Durchsuchen'
'Abbrechen' is to cancel)
For this example, I will be ripping a scene from Jay's The One DVD
Preparation
1.
Create a folder you can remember, since that's where all the files during this process will go.
I just created a folder called DVD Rip on my desktop
2.
Make sure the DVD is in your DVD-ROM drive ;)
(yes you need a DVD-ROM drive, a regular CD-ROM drive will not read the DVD)
Using SmartRipper to rip the DVD
1.
Go find where you extracted the SmartRipper program.
It should be in a folder called SmartRipper 2.41.
Click (double click, whatever) SmartRipper.exe
3.
If you get any errors (no ASPI-Adapter available) just ignore and click OK
The program will now take a few seconds to read the DVD and find the VOB files.
You should come to a screen that looks like this (http://www.jay-chou.net/images/screen1.jpg)
4.
There are many options you can make, but I'm gonna make it simple
The only thing you should change is under Chapters, pick which
'scene' you want to extract. You can do all of them or just 1 or 2, it's your call.
I'm gonna do just chapter 4 (which is the scene for Dou Niu).
Under 'Target' select the folder I told you to make at the beginning (DVD Rip).
Keep the filename the way it is.
5.
Click 'Start' and wait for it to do it's thing
6.
Go look in the DVD Rip folder.
You should see a bunch of files that start with vts.
http://www.jay-chou.net/images/screen2.gif
The only one you need is the one ending in .vob, you can delete all the other ones.
(We could have told the program not to make all those extra files, it's under 'Settings' on the screen
before the program rips the DVD. Figure it out yourself when you have time)
Using TMPGEnc to convert the .vob file to MPG
1.
Open up TMPGEnc, and drag the .vob file into the big grey area in the middle
like this -> Example (http://www.jay-chou.net/images/screen3.gif)
Similarly, you could have clicked browse where it says 'Video Source' and selected the .vob file there.
2.
Click the button that says 'Load' on the bottom right
3.
Select VideoCD (NTSC).mcf
http://www.jay-chou.net/images/screen4.gif
(after you get better at this, you can pick which ever one you want
they are just resolution size, frame rates, etc. for the MPG file to be created)
4.
Under 'Output file name'
Name it whatever you want, and place it wherever, this will be the MPG file created.
5.
Click the 'Start' button at the top and you're done!
Just wait for the file to be created (can take up to 10-15 minutes depending on the clip length)

Thanks for the guide, Karen.
I feel so stupid now.
I didn't know that TMPGEnc could open .vob files as well.

I feel equally stupid, I just realized you don't even need SmartRipper.
Just view the contents of the DVD, and you'll see all the vob files there. All you gotta do is copy and paste...I think that will work. Haven't tried it though.

I know. I opened the DVD contents in Windows Explorer, chose the smallest .vob file I could find, and then dragged it into TMPGEnc.

Bearing in mind that I've only had my DVD-ROM drive for less than a month, and have never ever touched a DVD until then, that's just the way it is.

For all the newbies who are still confused, I use an easy newbie-proof hassle-free way of ripping dvd's. :)
Theres a program called super dvd ripper at http://www.dvdtodivx.net/
All you have to do is click a few buttons, then leave it on overnight and in the morning you have a new vcd, avi or mpg file waiting for you.
The problem is that its shareware and you can only use the trial for 30 days.

Can i convert Vcd to Mpeg using the same method as what u had given? I can't watch the Ye hui Mei vcd in my computer...So i was thinking maybe i should convert it to mpeg to watch it...can someone teach me how? Thanks...

blueang3l, you don't have to do anything special in order to get the VCD tracks onto your computer. Just follow these instructions:
1. Insert your VCD into your CD-ROM drive, and browse to the MPEGAV folder on it.
2. You should see some files with the .DAT extension. They are usually named AVSEQ01.DAT and so on, or as MUSIC01.DAT.
3. Copy those .DAT files over to a folder on your hard disk.
4. Rename the .DAT files as .MPG files. You may right-click on each file and select "Rename" from the popup menu, or click to select each file and press the [F2] key (it would serve the same purpose).
5. View the MPEG files first to make sure that they work, and then rename the files accordingly (for example, you might want to give them descriptive names such as "Yi Fu Zhi Ming MV.mpg" or such.

Hm....
Lepencil's suggestion involves copying the files onto your hard-disk, so if you've got limited hard drive capacity (like me before i got my new laptop) then i'm guessing you would not quite want to do that.
Anyway, this is if you have no wish to copy over the contents of the disc onto your hard drive:
As per Lepencil's instructions, insert the VCD into the drive, select the option of viewing folders in disc (instead of playing it directly) then open the folder MPEGAV, and see the dat files, like AVSEQ01.DAT
IF I RECALL CORRECTLY:
Instead of copying the files and renaming them, just double click on the file (usually the one you want is the largest file). A message would pop up saying the file can't be opened. The message will tell you to either
1) search on web for tool to open (or something like that) or
2) Open file with selected program on computer
Choose option 2, and pick windows media player, or whatever player you usually use to play such video files...
then it SHOULD work....ie, windows media player should be able to play the files correctly....
Hope this helped! :)

Oh, and about renaming the files, windows 2000/xp doesnt let you directly rename the file extentions. So you will have to use winrar or a program like that to rename the file from .dat to .mpg
jayx8318x

Actually you can rename files in WinXP and any other windows platform.
Just open up any folder, click on Tools>Folder Options
click on the 'View' tab
and uncheck 'Hide Known extensions' like in the pic:
http://www.jay-chou.net/images/folder.gif
From this point on, all your files will have the extension displayed and you can easily change them.

So is blueang3l asking about how to watch the VCD on her computer? Or about "converting" VCD tracks into MPEG files?
roche's reply deals with the former, whereas mine details the latter. I guess only blueang3l herself knows what she's after.

did they have sound before you ripped them and played them just as DAT files? im not sure, but it sounds like it just may be u dont have the necessary codecs. You can go download the latest WMP codecs at the microsoft website.

oooh sorry! i wasn't clear enough. i'm trying to rip a DVD (The One DVD), and i can see/hear most of the DVD, but there's this part where it gets stuck lotsa times (it'll just stop playing for a little bit, and then continue, then stop, etc) and a couple times it crashes my windows media player O.o
Oh, and i'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but when i actually use SmartRipper (as opposed to opening the drive and trying the convert the .vob files straight from there) it goes about halfway but then stops and then the program stops responding. and i tried taking it out and putting it back in.. weird.. i dunno why, no scratches on it either O.o
sorry i was unclear before, and thanks for trying to help, jiandan[ai]! i appreciate it :)

haha ok, my first guess would be that your computer might be working a little to hard. I dont know what kinda computer you have, but the slow/random stopping kinda stuff when your ripping it, sounds like your computer working overtime to do the job, and its not being succesful. It would help to close all other programs that you have running, so that the computer doesnt hafta juggle so many tasks at once. The best idea is to just it run and leave the computer alone for a while.

is that when u are playing the dvd? or have u ripped it already?
assuming that is just watching the dvd, not anything ripped, i can only assume the same as before.
If it helps i have the entire "The One" ripped into mpeg, and broken up into the separate 22 songs or so. If u are interested I can probably upload a few for you. If you want them all, im sure i could do that too, it might just take some time, and they are big files. So if it still doesnt work, gimme a PM and let me know, and ill upload a few that you want ^_^

Do you guys know how to rip DVDs with subs? I have been trying so hard to do it but always fail. I manage to rip the DVD but without subs the first time I tried, and then I used a different ripper + converter that uses TMPGEnc, it has subs but the first part and the last part was cut!
So confused...
Has anybody tried ripping DVDs with subs? :?

yup i tried. it is easy only, that it takes time..I used dvd to vcd ripper....it rips dvd into three format mainly avi, vcd, n mpg..you can choose either to include the sub or not...you have to pay for the software though unless you crack the software like me..hehe:D
