sorry, if the word "hella" offend anyone...:worry:

:? The word "hella" is native to northern california and, from what I hear, from S.F. and the bay area in particular. If you grew up in NorCal you've probably used the word hella before.

Definitions of Hella
1. Northern Californian term for "really" or "very." Generally accepted vernacular north of Santa Barbara (It will get you dirty looks anywhere else in the world.) example- That's hella true

2. A word never said by the highly intelligent people indigenous to Southern California. ex. What did that guy just say? Hell...A??

3. If you are really Nor-Cal, you just throw it in anywhere, at least like 5 or 6 times in a sentence. ex. I hella know that girl hella messed up on her hella hard test.

See also synonym hecka.
Hecka:
Used in place of "hella" because it is hecka better, or because people are not into using "hella." ex. I hecka think jcnet forum is the best

 i just brought this up beacuse i notice being in college i met people from southern california and how they are weird out by northern california words like 'hella' and 'hecka' Also when the band No Doubt came out with the song "Hella Good" im pretty sure rest of the world thought the word was odd because they never heard hella in that way.

Growing up in the bay area of norcal, i grew up with these words being used and thought they were used national. I used to say both the words especially hecka alot but i dont anymore. it wasnt until reccently i notice these two words only exist in the northern part of california. so i just want to know what do you guys think of these two words and any weird encounter of people or you saying them?

hahaha, oh goodness you norcal people =P yeah, whenever i visit my cousins in cali, they're in socal, and i ask them if they use "hella", they just laugh. they think its stupid to say that. for me, well.. i'm in texas. i guess it doesnt matter. haha. buuut actually, people in houston are starting to use "hella". some of my friends say it. but then again, they wish they were californians.. they're ghetto wannabes, sorta. haha.

I think once socal people spend a lot of time in norcal, say, attend a college in norcal for four years, words like "hella" will start to seep into their brains, and before they know it, they'll start using those words too! I've seen it happen *nods knowingly*

I've heard worse words than "hella" and "hecka" being used regularly by socal people though, so they shouldn't be criticizing XD

:D haha nice usage of the words singerchick

spork i know what u mean, like people from socal do get influence with the words as they get used living here.
*sigh* i guess the norcal-bay area words are getting mainstream these days...

but then some people truly dislike the word hella.
i remember during the summer of college advising, people would be " do you guys really use the word hella up here?"

I can't imagine not using this word haha it's totally embedded into my vocabulary.
I'm going to get strange looks from people when I attend UC Irvine this fall -__- but THAT'S OKAY because I'll give SoCal people strange looks for saying the word GRIP.

I'm from Southern California, and I admit I think it's really weird that NorCal kids use "hella" and "hecka". It's just odd to me. o.O My friends thought it was the funniest thing and took to saying their version of NorCal speak just to annoy some people who were really freaked out by it.

I'll be going up to the SF area for school, so I'm one of those SoCal people who's worried about getting it seeped into my vocabulary, haha.

Hopefully, my vocabulary is weird enough that the two words won't find their way there. XDDDDD

Nope, will be headed over to the bum-filled land of UC Berkeley. ^^;;

Unrelated, but I actually didn't see that many homeless people when I was visiting Cal last month. o.O
