I desperately need help here.. I have been facing this problem since past few months. My web browsers: Firefox and IE can't load/access some websites like www.friendster.com, 12dailypro.com, microsoft.com, msn.com, hotmail.com, webmail.tm.net.my, etc etc. I really dont know why I've no idea what to do with it.. I reformatted my pc before, but it's doesnt show any effect (becoz I thought it was virus problem before this). But after taking back my pc from the shop, I found the problem was still there.. until now.. *sighs*
Actually, I seeked for consult from my broadband service provider before, the customer support employee replied my email and asked me to try using different IP address and try to change the DNS.. but that didn't help.. not at all.. Now, even some of the Photobucket sites (server like i35.photobuc.../i20.photobuck... also cant be loaded)
Now, I'm just looking if any JCNET members faced this kinda problem before, and I hope pc experts could help me.. Need help so badly here...
I cant find this thread so I simply created it. If it has been created before, pls gimme the link and feel free to del this (=
Thanks first!!

Is there any message appearing when you try to load the sites? Like page not found, timeout error, no reply from server? Or just plainly blank? You might try doing a ping, in Windows 2000/XP you do this:
- Go to Start, Run
- Type cmd then Enter
- Type ping website name, example: ping www.friendster.com
- You will see if there is any reply, or the reply timed out
If there is any reply, then it's a problem with your system, if it's timed out, the problem is with the connection. Try using the computer with a different ISP first, try dial-up.

Were you provided with a static IP or dynamic IP?
Do you have a router?

TMNut provides dynamic IP. Most probably routing problem by the router or the setting for streamyx is wrong. But only certain pages cannot load?

I'm currently using Win 98 SE. and there isnt any reply from the page.. it seems like loading the page, but nothing came out, and no any messages came out.. just a blank page.. And I cant run "cmd" .. it returned "pls specify a correct path"

I dont have a router though.. Yes, only a certain pages cant be loaded. Actually early this year, I cant load friendster.com, 12dailypro, tmbills, yahoo (login page), etc.. but then suddenly can load friendster.com, for a few months. then cant load again ^^" Now I can load yahoo login page, but not the others.. I cant even access into my tmnet webmail.. then my streamyx got cut. becoz i didnt see the notification email from tmnet.. sighs. ><

try this, delete all of your cookies, temp internet files, and temp files. c:/documents and settings>user>local settings>
if ur using a router, turn the firewall off. most websites use port 80 which but in this case those websites use multiple ones, and the firewall blocks them. better yet just reset/restart the router.
tell me what happens.

I tried that before. I deleted all my private data (cookies, histories, cache and autheticated sessions) but still da same. and I'm not using router. I'm currently using the Aztech DSL 206U modem.. I also tried to connect using different IP and different DNS as what the ISP support employee told me to. I also reinstalled my modem.. still no difference @.@
But: If I didn't use the splitter, will it affect my connection?? I found one special thing: I'm not using splitter, still I dont get any interruption if someone calls (my house phone) and I can continue using my streamyx even if my house phone line is cut (becoz didnt pay bill for few months xD).. weird weird.. sighs.
Have you tried updating your updating your files through windows update under Tools at the top of your browser?

On a Win98SE, change the "cmd" with "command", I think it will work. Or just go to MS-DOS prompt from the Start Menu.
Maybe it is a good thing to upgrade your OS too, I was like you, using 98SE until last year it got me bad and almost made me lost my precious files when the system went broke under a malicious macro attack or something. WinXP can offer you better Antivirus and Firewall protection, so do upgrade...

On your computer search for a "HOSTS" file, it should be somewhere on your C:\ drive
(There maybe multiple ones, but look at the one closest to the root)
Open it up with notepad or something, check to see what entries are in there. Usually it should just contain your localhost (127.0.0.1) but sometimes it may contain other entries for websites that you wanna block.
If you do see other entries, clear them all out except for the localhost one
(make a backup copy first just in case)
Save it and restart your computer. If that doesn't apply, then I can think of some other stuff you can try. For example, it seems for the most part, the sites you're trying to load may be secure sites, and your firewall is blocking access to secure sites.

alrite.. I tried "command". erm. ping www.friendster.com, I get replies..something like "Reply from: 209.11.168.242: bytes=32 time=535ms TTL=237" then I ping www.12dailypro.com, it returned "request timed out".. same thing to microsoft.com and msn.com.
well, I dont think my pc is suitable for WinXP.. becoz it's really really low performance pc.. Intel celeron 1GHz with only 128MB SDRAM.. I use this for surfing da net, online chatting and some working stuff only.. not for gaming. that's why until now I'm not interested in any games =.= but I'm planning to purchase a new pc.

This is what I get:
================================================== ==============
# Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for Windows98
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost

I dont have any firewall programme on my system..

Do you know how to start your computer up in safe mode?
edit if not:
1. Restart your computer.
2. While your computer restarts, press and hold the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed.
NOTE: If you are using the EZDrive tool, press F8 instead of CTRL.
3. Select the Safe Mode menu option from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.
Start it up in "safe mode with networking" if that option is available. I'm thinking maybe you have background processes that are blocking access.
After you start in safe mode try accessing those sites. If it works then that means that's the cause.

the splitter won't help you
it has nothing to do with which sites you can and cannot access
from the list of websites you have listed it appears it is selective to sites that require logins and web based mail services
i did a quick google search and a search of the microsoft databases and came up with this
SYMPTOMS
When you try to gain access to a security-enhanced Web site, you may receive the following error message:
The page cannot be displayed
Cannot find server or DNS error
CAUSE
This error message can be caused by incorrect security settings in Internet Explorer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
1. Quit Internet Explorer (if it is running).
2. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Scroll down to the Security section.
5. Clear the Use PCT 1.0 selection.
6. Clear the Use TLS 1.0 selection.
7. Click OK.
APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
• Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

if that doesn't work (i sure hope it does) then i found another possible fix after some further reading.
be advised that this might hurt ur brain or your eyes or both and not sure if its really relevant to your situation. i guess if you aren't using Internet Connection Sharing you can disregard this fix
If you're using Windows' built-in support for Internet Connection Sharing, and your Internet connection is facilitated by PPPoE software (such as Enternet 300) or Windows XP's built-in PPPoE, you may experience this problem. Although any web site will be accessible on the "Host" computer, certain web sites will never load successfully from any of the "client" machines. (If you don't know what "Hosts" or "Clients" are with regard to ICS, read Internet Connection Sharing.) The problem is caused by an incompatible MTU networking setting: Windows' default is 1500, but PPPoE uses 1492 or 1454. Here's how to fix it:
1. Find the IP address of your gateway. If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, run IPCONFIG at a command prompt on the Host computer. If you're using Windows 98 or Me, run WINIPCFG on the Host computer. Either way, you'll get an address that looks like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where the x's represent numbers).
2. Then, go to one of your Client machines, and type the following:
PING -f -l 1500 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the gateway address you obtained in the first step). You'll probably get an error message indicating that it must be fragmented. If you do, type the following:
PING -f -l 1492 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
If that doesn't work, try this:
PING -f -l 1454 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
3. The numbers in each of these examples (1500, 1492, 1454) are the MTU values. Continue issuing this command with lower and lower MTU numbers until you get ping responses instead of an error message. The highest MTU value that works is the one you need to be using. If an MTU of 1500 (the first command, above) does not produce an error, then this solution won't work for you.
The next step is to configure all your Client computers to use the new, lower MTU as the default for all Internet communication.
after you've done all that, you have to do this
Windows 98/Me:
1. Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) on one of your "Client" machines.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ Class\ Net\.
3. Under that branch, find a key (numbered, such as 0005) that contains has TCP/IP assigned to the DriverDesc value.
4. Select New from the Edit menu, then String Value, and type MaxMTU for the name of the new value.
5. Double-click the new value, choose the Decimal option, and type the MTU value determined above.
6. Click Ok when you're done - you'll need to restart Windows for this change take effect.
7. Repeat this for each Client machine.
give it a try. hope that helps. don't waste your money on a splitter.
