so is this the biggest walk out ever? arg, i wish i post this earlier

"May 1, 2006 a national “day without an immigrant.” Anti-immigrant politicians and hatemongers call immigrants “a drain on society” - they try to pass repressive legislation like HR 4437 and encourage groups like the racist “Minutemen.” But immigrants contribute billions to the economy and receive few benefits in return."

The points of unity are: No Work, No School, No Sales, and No Buying, and also to have rallies around symbols of economic trade in your areas (stock exchanges, anti-immigrant corporations, etc.).

so anyone did it? of not going to school, dont buy anything, my neighbor say wear white for purity!

 im in college like livin in a dormitory make me less knowledge about the things happening in the world these days. i wish i can be doing that, not go to classes on a day i dont have classes , don't work when i dont have a job and no buying things when im going to stay inside my room all day.

I'm at school right now and it's nuts. The student protestors have taken up half of the marketplace...but I understand where they're coming from. (Even a duck from across the quad near the dorms where the duck pond is came otu to support them) They're wearing shirts that say "On May 1st, we sit so other can stand!" Which is totally awesome.

I support them all the way but there was a sign on the door that says "Support the march, don't buy food." I was like "But I'm hungry....:(" So I think in that sense it's a bit ridiculous. I'm a minority here, but I'm not an immigrant. While I do support them...I am freakin hungry.

I'll hold off as long as I can though. SO HUNGRY.

hahaha personally i think this is stupid. well atleast for the students that have school, they are just tryin to find an excuse not to come to school. i know theres some who dont even know whats going on and joining it just becausse their friends are too. its kinda funny when i think about it, for 1 whole day they wont do anything that will effect the economy. that means no gas, no electricity, and no flushing the toilet.

Remember a couple weeks ago when the riots and the other protests were going on, and it was all over the news. funny story, well that day i was driving down the street and saw like 30 protesters with the wrong proposition. it was funny to me

I actually thought it was only the immigrants who were not going to work on May 1..

I saw some people wearing only white and waving American flags....it wasn't that important on my campus.

I think it is unfair that illegal immigrants can just come here and stay here while other people who go through the actual immigration process have to wait years and years and have to spend lots of money...

To sum it up, its restrictions on illegal immigrations and what to do about them.

I thought the Senate only passed their version of it? Has the House come up with theirs? Just to clarify, for a bill to actually become a law and enacted, both houses must approve and then its up to the president as well... though Bush is pushing for it isn't he?

Anyway, I think the whole immigration bill is rather fair. Its not like the Senate is going to completely throw out every single illegal immigrant. They know the impact that's going to take on the economy as well as society (look at what's happening). Plus, the Senate's giving illegal immigrants the chance to apply for citizenship if they meet certain requirements (like length of stay in the U.S.).

bah, immigrants shouldn't be coming in the US illegally anyways! can't they just do it the right way like everyone else? if we're letting the illegal immigrants apply for us citizenship, then wouldn't that promote more illegal immigrants?

No. Because again, it depends on the length of stay in the U.S.. So, an illegal immigrant living in the U.S. for 5 years can qualify while one who just came for 3 months can't. So the point is moot for them (thus they have to do it legally).
