our education minister (or something) recently says that he hopes that our national universities will be world class by 2010, but i am not convinced. certainly, it is possible, but what are the chances.

notice how rich people usually send their kids overseas or international schools, and smart people get scholarships to go overseas. i am currently studying in singapore, and will got back to malaysia next year after my O levels. right now, i am searching for schools to enter. so while we have really top universities from other countries situated in malaysia (eg Monash Uni, U of Nottingham), we also have loal top private schools like Taylors, Inti... I was just wondering about the quality of education these schools offer.

and also people who went overseas for uni, do they really come back to malaysia and work for a pay lower than in the countries they stayed in? i read somewhere that a average malaysian's pay is USD$9000 ++ compared to singapore which is USD$19000 ++ and while malaysian earned twice as less as singapore, material things like air tickets, apparel, handphones, cars cost twice as much. is this reasonable???

and a really interesting site on education in malaysia.

education in malaysia blog (http://educationmalaysia.blogspot.com)

I'm surprised nobody has responded to this thread. Surely you guys must have something to say about this?

Personally, I'd not given much thought to continuing my education locally after I was done with secondary school. I can't remember why exactly. I've been in the U.S. since 1999. I graduated with my Bachelor's degree here and will be graduating with my Master's degree soon. I've also done some other things in between. Now I'm job searching here. Haven't really thought about going back to Malaysia. At least not in the near future.

Regarding your first question, I think that it's possible if we have entrance exams for our universities, like Tokyo-Dai or Todai in short, getting into it requires entrance exams and that's where they pick their prospective quality (dedicated) students. Todai is quite a famous university and a prestigious one too, producing well-known figures, among them Nobel laureates.

As for your second question on quality education, I suppose we all are concerned about it, but the most important question remains in whether the course we're pursuing is recognised by our government or not. If it's not recognised, then our diploma/degree/master/PhD would be just a blank piece of paper as we can't find a job with it.

Now, concerning quality education, I think it all depends on the self. If we didn't take the initiative to gain any knowledge, even if we're in a prestigious school, do you think that our knowledge will be broader by magic when we graduate? What does it mean, when we're in a prestigious school? To me, it just means that I'll have a better learning environment and experience, but does that make me any better if I didn't take the initiative to learn?

Lastly, concerning how well the jobs pay locally, compared to overseas, if everyone's that concerned about it, I don't think our country's going anywhere, because all our local talents will be working overseas, they get better paid overseas, no doubt. Then, will our country be developed?
