 here's the summary:
The surprise hit is about a troupe of entertainers condemned to die for an act mocking 16th-century King Yonsan, but who beg to be pardoned if they can make the king laugh with their racy skit lampooning him and his favorite concubine. The clowns succeed and become court jesters.
Kong-gil, the gentle-faced male clown who portrays the woman in the skit, draws the king’s attention — staging private puppet shows to Yonsan’s delight but evoking the jealousy of clown leader Jang-saeng, who has always protected his friend from other men’s amorous advances.
The gay story line is muted. The king and Kong-gil share one quick on-screen kiss.
The movie is based on a fictional play that was inspired by a brief mention in the king’s diary about his favorite clown.

my friend saw it in korea and said that it's basically 'korean brokeback'- she said it was really really popular, but she didn't really understand why it was because there was nothing particularly special about it. the 'gay' jester is the vaness-looking guy in drama 'My Girl'. doesn't the story line sound weird though?
so dear goongers- i suppose you guys need to see the movie first to justify if shin/yul fit the bill more, or this one!

The male actor that plays as the feminine looking jester is sooooooo...popular in Korea right now. Lee Jun Ki is his name if not mistaken. I am kindda looked forward because it has something to do with Korean history, and besides was the brokeback effect thingy.. :D

i was about to start a thread on this. lucky i searched beforehand ^^; thanks Ava
this is truely one of the best kmovies i've seen. the acting and story is skillfully carried out. the dialogues during their skits are a bit confusing sometimes because of the way it was translated. it sounded too Shakespearean for my liking ><; forget all the articles you've read about it's gay theme. the homosexuality is quite ambiguous, which makes the relationship between Jang-seang, Gong Gil, and the King more interesting :rolleyes: this is a movie which you have to re-watch a few times to understand the depth of the dialogues ^^;
you can find this in youtube if you can't DL from clubbox. i'd suggest that you buy the DVD version when it's out because there are some scenes that are edited out that you see in the MV, but not the movie.

kakaakajes, thanks for the link:happy:
i just finished watching, its good! i so recommend everyone to watch it!
i love how not so explicit of sex and killings it is, like when it comes to something like a kiss or sex and killing, they dont show too much of it, just the right amount.
to me the king, seem to have some um mental issue or just a bit, he acts like a boy sometimes, king on the outside but he still have his inner child within.
i love gong gil's skin, its soo good lookin
i cried toward the end, it was very moving.
I just finished watching it too! :excited:
I agree, it's one of the best Korean movies I've seen in awhile. The plot and the cast's performance are excellent... especially that of Jang Seang and Gong Gil. The king was very disturbing, so I guess you can say he acted well too :D
I guess they just hyped up the homosexuality bit too much. But really, for me, it was very tastefully done. I never cringed while watching the movie - unlike when I watched Brokeback. Even without the intimacy, you just know and feel the love between Jang Seang and Gong Gil. And I just love their final act together, towards the end. I love their dialogue; Was crying a lot while watching it
And Jun Ki is just so pretty!
Highly recommended; watch it guys!!!

this is one beautiful movie! absolutely nothing like brokeback mountain. now i understand why this movie grossed so highly Korea. i would recommend this movie to anyone! was kinda blur about the ending, though.
*spoiler*did both of them die? if so, how did they die? did they fell to their deaths? a bit blur. i'm pretty sure the king died, though.*spoiler end*
i think the king had a serious mental problem  and yes, i cried as well. *sob sob* really touching movie.
i would definately watch it again but my computer hard drive died on me. :-x
Merriana trust me, it's nothing like Brokeback Mountain. You won't cringe, nor will you be bored.
ice_sylph I think it was beautiful how the director ended the movie that way. He basically leaves the ending up to us. It's highly probable that they died, and maybe they jumped to their deaths because they've been talking about their next lives already during their performance. But then again, they could have been killed by the attackers. For me, though, I'd like to dwell more on their performance and their beautiful, beautiful dialogue. I just love this movie! <333
