"Epik High is Korean hip-hop group known for hit songs like "Fly," "Day of Peace," and "Paris." The group was unknown to many Koreans in beginning of their careers, due to the lack of popularity of hip-hop music in Korea.Formed in 2001 and joined the ranks of The Movement, a posse lead by fellow Korean crew Drunken Tiger. Debuted in the end of 2003 with the "Map of the Human Soul" which made them one of the most popular new comers in the South Korean hip-hop scene.
Composed of three members, Tablo, Mithra and DJ Tukutz, Epik High is a hip-hop group with a perfect format of two MCs and one DJ. Their music is known to be as lyrical as a piece of literature and at the same time very witty and paradoxical. All three members of the band are singers and song-writers. Starting with composing melodies, the three members are all capable of writing lyrics and song arrangements. However with the success of their recent third album they have became one of the most popular singing groups in Korea. Their third album title song "Fly" was a big hit in Korea, becoming the number-one song on many Korean TV music programs and online music charts. The leader of the group, Tablo is known in Korea not only for his appearance in Korean sitcoms, Nonstop5, and other variety show programs but also for his Master's degree in English Literature from Stanford University (CA).

i'd like to say that i'm a HUGE epik high fan! XD

I got to know them during High Society days through Pops In Seoul. It was a song from the first jib that I fist heard...called "Get High" but I got acquainted with the High Society album first.

Liking Epik High and not understanding more of the brilliance behind tablo's lyrics...is a huge factor of my frustration of not knowing much korean. T_T I am sad because there are not much translations of their songs. ;____;

but yes, I love Epik High. It's not enough that they have wonderful beats...they are very socially aware too and can be cute too (thinks of sajincheop performances. :wink2: )

oh yes it does. Paris is actually trying to find beauty amidst all the corruption.

I read something about this MV once (a blog of a korean who fully understood the meaning behind the song) and she explained that the black and white represents corruption, pain and everything that goes along with it. Then the green color that Han Hyo Joo emits is death. When Tablo and Han Hyo Joo met and they touched hands there was a burst of green. Why? that is the beauty amidst all the corruption. Tablo mentioned something in the end that says "Death is the start of new life". So that fusion represents the start of something beautiful.

At times like this I get really sad that I do not understand korean. Tablo and his brillliance is something I want to understand.

Tablo's so adorable XD He's always so hype in his performances, watching him perform would make my day alone because his personality alone is so brilliant and uplifting I can feel his enthusiasm for performing leak through. I really wish I could understand korean too...Maybe I should make it my summer project =/

I believe Tablo was born in Korea, but his family moved to Canada when he was still pretty young. I think I read somewhere that he went to the same elementary school as Nicholas Tse for a while, but those could be just rumors.

(New to the Epik High thread but I have been loving them forever ;9) Just to comment on Spork's "rumor", I do believe that it's true. I believe I read that they went to high school together... He said "One of my best mates in high school, his name is Nicholas Tse, is a very well known singer and actor in HK. Last year in Jackie Chan's film New Police Story, when Nic had his hair over one of his eyes, it looked really cool. I remember once when we had an outing, we found that our room had be recked by someone, later we gathered our other mates to find the white classmates who always challenged us, to sort things out. Accidentally we pushed one of them and they fell, smashing the back of his skull. I was made to leave the school because of that. Man. I love Epik High so much. Their style has matured a great deal in their fourth album, Remapping the Human Soul. It's a two-cd album, the first subtitled The Brain and the second, The Heart.

Hip-hop culture, especially music, is enjoying unprecedented popularity in Korea these days. At the center of all is Epik High, a three-member hip-hop group whose new album ``Remapping the Human Soul” topped local music sales charts.

Epik High has successfully combined witty, socially conscious lyrics with infectious beats to come up with hit songs that helped popularize hip-hop music.

Composed of rappers Tablo, Mithra and disc jockey Tukutz, the group believes hip-hop still has a long way to go in Korea.

Epik High is a popular Korean hip-hop group, composed of, from left, rappers Mithra and Tablo and disc jockey Tukutz. Epik High released their fourth album “Remapping the Human Soul” last month.

``Many still don’t consider hip-hop as a musical genre. It took us a long time to change that. It took us until this album to show that hip-hop music is music,” Tablo, whose real name is Lee Sun-wong, told The Korea Times in an interview on Wednesday.

Epik High released their debut album ``Map of the Human Soul” in 2004, followed by ``High Society” and ``Swan Song.” The song ``Fly” was one of the most popular songs in 2005.

Tablo said their fourth album ``Remapping the Human Soul” reflects the musical and personal growth of the members.

``When we made ‘Map of the Human Soul,’ basically we wanted to make the first song and the last song signify birth and death and everything else that happens in between… Back then there were things that we didn’t know in music and life. Through the years, we became different people, so we wanted to re-draw the map of the human soul to better reflect all the changes and what we feel,” Tablo said.

The first single, ``Fan,” about a fan’s obsessive love for a celebrity, has already received a lot of radio airplay. ``The way somebody falls in love with a star is the same as somebody falling in love with anybody, a stranger or music… We wanted to talk about that kind of desperation and how it’s actually a stupid kind of love that’s determined to fail and lead to heartbreak,” Tablo said.

When asked whether they’re fans of any celebrity or anything, Tukutz said he’s a fan of Michael Jackson, while Mithra said he’s a fanatic of music.

Epik High took a year and a half to finish making ``Remapping the Human Soul.” Tablo said they all “went kind of crazy” making music non-stop, writing over 200 songs and recording 47 songs. But only 27 tracks made it in the two-disc album.

The album has courted controversy because some lyrics deal with sexual crimes, war, education and religion. Tablo can’t help but get passionate when talking about censorship, especially since he said the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is trying to prevent some of the songs from being played on the radio.

``Most songs aren’t censored because of language. There are no cuss words or bad words. But if we talk about a social issue, we get censored. I don’t understand how discussing a social issue or saying that something wrong should be made right is bad for the youth… If talking about serious issues and reality and how to make it better is wrong; If we're living in that kind of society, things are not going to get any better,” Tablo said.

Despite the censorship, Epik High is not about to change their style. ``We're not going to say we're not doing this because it might mean less album sales. If we think that, then we're no longer doing things that we're supposed to do. We’re no longer being honest with ourselves. As long as it’s our heads, in our hearts, we’re going to approach that no matter what,” he said.

Epik High is a firm believer in using music as an instrument for social change. Tablo, who has been involved in social work for a long time, said music should be used to make people aware of the issues affecting society.

With hip-hop music all the rage around the world, many are wondering when Epik High will try their luck in the overseas market. ``Flow,” their collaboration with Japanese singer Emi Hinouchi, will soon be released as a single in Japan.

But Tablo said Epik High is in no hurry to go international.

``When the opportunity arises, we would love to. But I don’t think we’re in that big of a rush. Right now, we're enjoying making music here. There's still a lot that needs to be done here,” Tablo said. ``It’s just God's blessing that we became famous. It’s a blessing that we've become wanted in Korea. It’s not something we aspired to. Right now, we're content and we'll always be content with whatever we've got,” Tablo said.

Ive been listening to the since "Day of Peace" and it just feels like theyre going more and more towards "mainstream".... I personally like that kind of music (like the style of Big Bangs song "Last Farewell"), but it feels too much with the hair styles, the new clothes and everything.... I like "One", but they shouldnt overdo it, cus then they are just going to lose their essence

This new album is a big change because of their last album "Remapping the Human Soul".

I don't really think it's their choice to change their style of music from underground rap and old school hiphop to electronica and mainstream style, but they're probably doing it because of demand and offer. It's like what happened to Big Bang as well.

I mean, don't get me wrong, "One" is AWESOME, but if you compare it with their old songs like Lesson One, Love Love Love, White Night, I Remember, it's NOT the same kind of music at ALL.

^I gotta agree with you Mikey, I was quite surprised myself when I finally got around to listening their new jib. To me the style became more mellow and wasn't "funky and fun" hip hop music anymore.

I still think they did a good job on the jib, I love "One", "Oosan" and "girl", although "girl" seems like something Big Bang would sing :D

Well, I've interpreted 'One' as the girl being in pain because in the lyrics it says she has scars and wounds. But even though the girl commits suicide, Epik High saves her because they're her saviour (from the lyrics).

'Fan' is about an girl who decides to build a rocket to kill the guy that she's obsessed with because if she can't have him nobody can.

Both MVs are pretty cool though.

^ I doubt that. That'd be highly arrogant. I haven't looked at the lyrics for Once, but I'm assuming they mean it in the humble way that they'll provide light to relieve her so she doesn't feel so depressed that she has to die. Hold on I'll go find the lyrics...

*back* Alright I just saw the full translation and yeah the meaning's actually really deep. I had to concentrate on it.lol

In the video the girl is depressed. The lyrics approach the situation as if they are the girl's pain and they are in pain themselves. They were saying things like "Are you in the shadows? I lose my breath the same way in the shadows". WHich is saying they get depressed just like she feels now. And the savior part they were saying "You are my savior." Which is like they're saying the gilr, or their fans, are their saviors. Their fans keep them from getting too depressed. And even if their fans are scarred inside and feel suicidal Epik High still sees them as beautiful people.

Looking between the video and the lyrics I would say Epik High feels like their fans save them from darkness, and in return they'll do their best to save their fans from darkness as well. X3 So sweet! I love Epik High

i'm not that familiar with korean hip hop singer. when i saw the name "EPIK HIGH" on my friend's winamp list, it made me a little bit curious. so i tried to ask her and then she gave me some of their songs.

when listening to those several songs like "Fan", "One", "Love Love Love" the overall they are not that bad. even I can say now they are great !

so am listening to their songs till now. i've watched one of their MV in one of korean. they are all so cute and handsome too ...*blush*
