it's such a shame coz there's so many english speaking fans here
and it would be nice if he sings english in some of his songs.....
dun u think??? something like "i love u" would b nice
Or i could teach him english at no cost at all .... i wish... lol

actually, I hope that he never puts any english in his songs... cos let's face it, his english sucks, and I hate how chinese singers put english in their songs just to look cool.
Unless he releases a song that is entirely english, but that would probably be worse lol. I say just let him stick to what hes good at

i wouldn't necessarily deem it to be a shame. i think jay actually does know some english. not fluent by far, but can understand and speak a little at least. i believe it's his choice whether or not to master english. he doesn't want to conform to what other people are doing. why should he sing in english? why should he improve his english skills? is it b/c english is superior? will he be looked down upon if he doesn't know it? i think jay should do what he's comfy with musicwise. at this point, i don't think he'll enjoy singing in english. and if he's just throwing in a line or two for the SAKE of singing in english, i'd rather that he didn't do it. that would change his whole philosophy of walking his own path and doing what he wants to do. if he feels comfortable singing in english one day, i'm sure he'll experiment with that and share the results with us. but only when he finds it to be diao and not b/c everyone wants him to do something in english. plus, he's mentioned in a recent radio interview in HK that he doesn't want to touch people with words/language as much, he wants to reach the world with MUSIC, which i believe can transcend all language barriers and strike a chord in everyone's heart.

I wouldn't call it shameful. It's more like pitiful to me. If only he could speak English so I could understand what he's saying... ><;; When I went to the LV concert he spoke in Mandarin so I was like :glug:  Oh crap! I thought he'd learn how to say something in English but he didn't so... but I still love Jay the way he is. The way he expresses himself through his music without me understanding what he's saying. That's what's 'diao' :yeah:

i cannot agree more with Quiet_boy...unless their english is really good...i dont like english in chinese songs...it often ruins the song for me...now if i didnt know english myself...i might feel differently...but that not being the case...i perfer some artists keep their english to a extreme minimum
dont get me wrong..im ok with Jay saying a few phrases in his mv's ...but i dont want his to start rapping english...and i cant tell what language that is...
english...may not be for everyone :wink2:

i agree.. i don't like english in chinese songs.. and i like the idea that jay is the only(as far as i know ) chinese artiste that doesn't put english words in chinese songs..even if the reason is because he can't speak it well.. (the only english words he has sung is his name ''jay chou'' in dui bu qi and "baby" in tornado) it just seems so much more authentic.. there are plenty of taiwanese artistes who put in english phrases or words just cos it's cool.. and the words sometimes sound so awkward in the song.. it seldom has a nice flow to it

same here..i don't think i would like it much if he put english in his songs...its good chinese...just the way it is.....and plus..jay probably wouldn't be able to write good lyrics in another language .....so chinese is good...^^

it's just diao the way jay sticks to his chinese roots, and not start singing too much of english in his songs..not that he is now. and i agree with wackycashew - is speaking english better than speaking mandarin? english may be the working language, one that many pple over the world use to communicate. but thing is, knowing mandarin when you are chinese is one important thing. not saying that if jay speaks english well makes him undiao or what..oops, hope i'm not sidetracking..

I agree with wackycashew and Quiet Boy, i too, just can't stand chinese singers who try to sing in english, the ones who can't even sing it properly, i just cringe when i hear it, because if they think they're cool by doing that, i can just tell them right about then, that they're making utter fools out of themselves. And even if they can sing english quite well, it would still depend on the person himself, whether the song and the way they sing it, is suitable for english or not. I wouldn't consider it to be a SHAME not to master his english skills, not that i'm saying he shouldn't learn, because well, you can never really get enough of knowledge, can you? And admittedly, it will be very handy for him to know english, but it is his choice whether he wants to learn it or not, and i have a feeling that, even if Jay was able to speak english fluently, he still won't. He's Jay, he's proud of speaking chinese, being chinese-- and I applaud and respect him for that.
To be perfectly honest, if he did start singing english or talking whenever he could, in it, the cringe and twitching of the eye, will be inevitable from me...
I know what you mean though, about how there are so many english fans, and i guess i know how it feels not to be able to understand what your idol is singing or saying, it's to me, just like Japanese music, but still, i like it the way it is, and the way the singer is, as it should be the same for Jay.
EDIT: hey...did you know Jay can say "i love you forever"? or i think something like that anyways, not sure about the forever, but the "i love you" was definitely there.

:? I don't undersatnd Chinese, but it doesn't bother me when Jay says or sings in Chinese cos that is his mother tongue. I'm sure if he goes to other country to have a concert , he is sure to speak English to the fans. But I have heard that he has an English tutor and he learns English when he has time. So this already shows that Jay still wants to communicate to his foreign fans.
And I have to agree with many of u guys here that Jay should not speak English in his songs. Cos how he remain Chinese is the special and unique thing about Jay that makes him stands out form other Asian singers that mix English with their mother tongues cos all of them only add in the simple and boring words like " I love u", " I miss u" etc.. So I really like the old Jay that sings and b proud of his language and his country.

right-o there, dream. he said "i love you forever" during a promo in HK when he's supposed to decipher the short forms in an SMS msg to the audience. so i think he said stuff like "hi", "how are you today?"...

Me too, would not call it shameful that he does not speaks english. Its not that he does not know how to, just that he is still learning and he does knows a little basic english. And I think he dont find the need to say english, esp to his chinese fans. Yes, he has an english tutor and is learning english right now. But, i dont think he needs to use them in his songs. personally, I dont think chinese songs are nice when they mix english in it. I mean, it doesnt make that song any more diao to have a mixture of english and chinese. Whether songs are good or not, depends all on the blend of lyrics and music.
I would say, he has as many chinese speaking and english speaking fans here. Good music can go through all barriers, regardless of if he can speak english or not.
Just like some of us here idolize some Jap or Korean artistes, and some Jap or Korean do not speak english too. Its the same thing with Jay and their fans.

yeah, i think jay should learn english, i think he likes it too...i think, by the way, i know there are translated lyrics, but, it doesn't go with the song, so we should edit it abit, change abit so it sounds better like.....i heard that after war there was peace so y do i keepin' seein' my father hitting my mother? oh come on! it rymes a bit! :yeah: :bleh:
wackycashew

hi Loony Luong, thanks for your tip regarding the translation of lyrics. you're referring to the "dad i am back" song which i did. i'll keep your advice in mind for the future, but i must say that i try to make things rhyme sometimes if i'm able to work it in. however, i will not sacrifice the meaning of the lyrics for the beauty of having rhyme if the rhyming takes away from the meaning. please keep in mind that translating takes quite some time. so, i must confess that i am a bit offended by your comment. there's really no need to use "oh come on!" which i have interpreted as your dissatisfaction with the translated lyrics. for me personally, i see the translation as a guideline to better understand the original lyrics. i'm not necessarily a wonderful lyricist or a poet. if the translation goes with the song, that's awesome. i know that people like Jo does an amazing job like that. i was merely trying to help out by providing translations for lyrics that have not been typed up yet. if you feel that you can contribute in this area, then please feel free to do so. i listen to and accept constructive crticisms, but not ones that sound like they are expressing displeasure for whatever reason. perhaps i'm reacting too strongly about this and i apologize if that was not the intent of your comment, but this is just how i honestly feel. if you've noticed, jay's lyrics are not the easiest to translate. it's even more difficult to make it go with the song. after all, the translation is not necessarily supposed to be an english version of the song. hope you understand what i mean. different people translate differently. even the same lyrics can be translated in a variety of ways. it's totally dependent on the person. i don't like to hear complaints, whether the translation was done by myself or someone else. if you have any suggestions to improve the translations, i would be more than willing to make appropriate changes and give you credit for them if i am informed nicely. if you expect all the translated lyrics in the forum to go with the song and even include rhyme in it, then i think your expectation is too high.
Yo wackycashew, I'm sure all of us here appreciate all ur hard work and others too at translating the lyrics. U know, i couldn't find any better translations anywhere else. Anyways, i think jay shd learn english but NEVER use it in his songs. He can get someone to rap in english 4 him(like in Dou Niu) but he shd juz stick to chinese. I also love it when he uses traditional chinese musical instruments(pi-pa)

wackycashew, i'm sure many people here appreciate your efforts in helping us to translate... :hugz:
i still want jay to say his thank you speech in chinese if he ever receives a grammy, like what he said he would do, so it doesnt matter to me if he doesnt master english. and even my friend who is very poor in chinese has very negative comments about chinese singers who sing english songs. since jay has always been so proud of his chinese roots, i guess it would just be better if he doesnt start speaking english at every available chance... out of pt?

totally agree on the above. great job wacky! :wink2: what's wrong with learning a new language. i think he is really great to be so determined on sticking to his roots but at one point, also not too good as one, should always have the want to improve oneself. perhaps he is learning, we don't know for sure yah? but it's not a shame though. afterall he is international already eh? but yupyup his songs still should and always be just mando :D just an opinion btw!

Argh..if only I knew mandarin! Then I'd understand him! I was so hoping he could speak english when i first liked him...
But then again...I love his songs in mandarin...so...i have no prob with that.
But learning English WOULD be good, cuz he has lots of fans in the US and other english-speaking countries...i'm sure.
Anyway, wackycashew (cute nick, btw), i'm sure all of us appreciate all the translators' hard work in here...i know i do...so..be assured that ur effortsdont go wasted.
I'm sure loony didnt meant what she said in a bad way...
I'm happy with JAy the way he is now...it would be good if he learned more english so when he comes to canada or the states...etc. then he can say some english at his concerts! but as long as he doesnt use any english in his songs...ill be happy becuz i dont want him to turn into one of those posers....

wackycachew - tks for your hard work - we fans wants so much ,dont' we ? i can understand mandarin and read the simple letters only. but i love chinese language - my only regret as a chinese is that when i was young i did not put enough effort to studying the language - i took the easy way and mastered english instead . i have a book of poety - " 500 tang poems " -in english . it's very professionaly translated - trying to retain the meaning and ryhme of the poems but still something is lost - the chinese essence ( because is ask my chinese educated friends to read to me some of the more famous poems and i cross-reference the english version ). but i still appreciate this book - just like we appreciate your translation .
i love many japanese songs without understanding it's meaning - so many of us love jay - firstly for his music - not the language used but learning more languages is always good - it does not demean your native tongue but is an added skill . if jay is ready and feels adding other lanuages to his music will enhance it - why not ? anyway music is for enjoyment - forget about nationalism , religion , gender etc. :D

hmmm... ok...
everyone dun like english in his songs??
yea.. i wont mind
but i jst wanna hear him sing some english or something....
i definitely don think it's a shame. i think it's e diaowest thing is that so many of his fans actually dont know chinese. he doesnt need english to communicate... he uses his music.. i think he shld just stay the way he is. learning a bit of english isnt bad at all. but i dont think it's necessary.

music DEFINITELY trannscends the language barrier mann...jay was the 1st chinese singer tht i actually really got addicted to and he got me hooked onto chinese music...and now i'm tryin my very best to learn how to speak n write chinese as well..very sad esp as i'm a chinese!! hahha it's very cute tho when he speaks english esp in the shuang dao movie :o)

i think it's quite important for an artst to learn and speak english..not only jay..coz not only they can communicate with their fans and bond..but they can speak english when they're travelling..for example asking ppl where's the washroom or..how much does something cost (like what jay did in his ye hui mei vcd..when he was in italy)thats the first time i heard him say sumthing in english..in the shuang dao movie too..he said few words in english..he does understand some english
(good 4 him)..but his music shouldn't be english interrupted..
i think it doesn't matter also if he doesn't know english......we like him because of his great songs and his ability......so what's the big deal about the language.......
*Jayso~
09-12-2003, 03:38 PM
i kinda agree with the fact that yeh we like him for the music and shouldnt be interrupted by the fact that he cant speak english.....the fact that he doent want to learn the lang is cool....but yeh he will eventually really need it since he is going to be famous internationally......
actually didnt somewhere say that he is taking english lessons?.....maybe he knows alot.....actually i heard him speak b4 and it was damn cool!... the jay acsent is soool sexy!

Erm.. his mediocre grasp of English is fully depicted in the Shuang Dao film where he only muttered a barely audible 'Thank you' as well as in Ni Ting De Dao where he asked the shopkeeper 'How much?' I nearly fainted with fright..
Of course, I do not mean to down grade Jay, but when speaking poses a huge problem for him, I'm sure singing will just as well be horrible. SO let's accept Jay as he is for his mandarin songs... and I agree that music transcends all boundaries, including language.
Though if one day he should want to master the EL and take a shot at singing in EL, then why not... as long as he executes the language without making us cringe.

Well, I doesn't bother me Jay doesn't know how to speak English. Chinese is fine with me. Besides, mostely I don't like artists put English in their songs...it's just, weird. And most of the time they've that weird accent...:D.
jessica
09-12-2003, 11:15 PM
well, i won't call it shame also.
i wouldn't like it if Jay starts adding english phrases in his songs either.
sometimes the accent may be too heavy and he might sound weird.
learning a foreign language is very difficult, so i won't blame Jay for not willing to learn or master it.
i've only heard him say a few words of english from the making of 'in the name of the father' and the movie clip of 'twin blades'... it does make me cringe a little when he's mumbling those few words out.

I am so impressed by his music that I don't realize he is speaking a language I don't understand. Even if I knew what he was singing, I think I would be hypnotized in his music.
Regarding the english in the music, I don't think it is necessary to have it but some people who don't understand Mandarin get a feeling of what he is trying to express.
Translations can only be so close too. I mean, you can't make it exactly, I think you just need some imagenation of what he is trying to say. But what do I know. hahaha.

I think it'd be cool for jay to learn english but i really hope he doesn't put more english in his songs other than "check it check it" <-that's good enough.. we don't want songs in english from jay because that would be... wrong like... Coco.

Hmmm my 0.02:
He should never add the English language into the lyrics of his song because he already has his own unique style of the mumbling Mando. He likes to be different, the difference between other artists at the moment is to sing completely in manderin.

No, its not a shame! Hehe, I think Jay's fine the way he is, I wouldn't change anything about him. Yah, I guess it is a down-er that Jay can't understand or communicate with us in English...or to his fan for that matter..but oh well! Its the same for many other singers as well right? Plus Jay wouldn't be Jay if he knew English..but I wouldn't mind if he put in a lil teeny tiny bit of English in his songs....like when he said "Jay Chou" in SORRY Track 07 of Fantasy, that was cool right!?! LOL.....
I don't think it's a shame that Jay doesn't master English, though I do feel disappointed... I feel that most ppl in Taiwan don't speak gd English too, sorry if there's ppl from Taiwan here... If he releases an English song I'll just die laughing listening to it. Let's face it, there's no way he'd be able to completely master the language and speak it as if he were a native English-speaker, so if he does an English song the pronounciation and whatnot is just going to be... atrocious. And I will just laugh. And I also hope that he never puts any form of English into his songs; I cringed when I first heard the "baby" in "Long Juan Feng". I mean, yeah, like some of you here I can't stand Chinese singers who put English words into their songs. Is Chinese not a good enough language for them? Please lah.
But it would be good for Jielun to know SOME English so that I wouldn't have to force myself to write him a letter in Chinese. It's quite a torturous process, really.

yea I do not agree with Jay start singing in english. stick to his chinese and i'd stick to his songs.. haha
most singers try to "be different" so they try english songs, but Jay already is different in every of his songs, so there is no reason why he should use english. giving speeches in english is alright, just no english in songs please. if you realised he spoke english at the end of his "ni ting de dao" MV, "excuse me, how muccch" his accent is so taiwanese~! In "Jay" album, some of his songs did have english, but they turned out not to be very famous. these are the consequences maybe.
And if you realised Jay is very loyal to the chinese culture. he loves and helps to maintain and develop the chinese culture a lot - using traditional chinese instruments for example. And in "The One" concert, he did actually said "Let this be a memory for all chinese, we do not have to compare ourselves with foreigners, just compare among ourselves is enough" (I forgot the exact words but this is what he was trying to say) I was surprised he said this, and it was really touching. What he said is totally true (sorry if anyone is hurt here but..). Why do we always have to compare ourselves with the western society? Why does the western society always have to come before our own chinese society?
Anyone agree with me? :?

No..no..don't let him to sing in English..let's face it that his English is really really sucks..watch Shuang Dao the mini movie? Even the director of it only give a small portion of English text to him..
I can't figure what the song will be if he sing it in English..but i don't think he will..he loves his chinese tradition and really proud to be a chinese..
Remember on the mtvasia award this year when he win the award he said his thanks in Mandarin not like F2 who are speaking English..

But it reminds me.... I think Jay often say some english words before he started rapping. Like...yo yo yo, check this out.... or something like that. And think it's pretty cool the way he pronounce it. ^^
I personally like the way Jay maintain his chinese pride..., I like the way he speaks Chinese in MTV Asia award. Somehow, it shows his individuality.
Actually I don't like the idea if Jay one day sing an english song. Seriously... not because of his bad english... but its because he will lost his "Diao" ness for being like another american-wannabe singer.

but, at least, he can say hello to fans espeacially in western country in english... i think, it will be nice n sound more sincere rite?
ooh~ i hvn't seen any concert held in western country yet, but i think he'll speak in english when he has the chance. talking about diao... there was this award-giving ceremony, i think it's TVB award which was held in HK last year. F2 joined as well, they spoke Mandarin and Jay... :excited: he spoke cantonese (only a few lines) but it was surprising!! it was unexpected~ made me adore him even more

Hey Jay ever been held concert in western country, isn't it. Correct me if I'm wrong
I think it's not that shame but may be he should know some, not go master in english but just speak fluently it'll profit for him. But I don't think launch the english song it's a good idea or even mix with his chinese style, it'll be more market concerned and not be his unique style anymore.
what do u guy think ?

10-10-2003, 08:22 AM
he should sing in chinese korean japanese and english... all in the same song... now that would be diao... ok maybe not...

If Jay were to master English the guy would be an international superstar. His music would catch on so fast here in the US. It's too bad he only sings in Mandarin (and sometimes Taiwanese). I know when I brought Jay back from Taiwan, my friends all dug his stuff, but they were turned off by the fact that they couldn't understand his words. Look what happened to Ricky Martin. That guy doesn't have an once of talent compared to Jay, but when he produced English versions to his songs, he exploded here. Same would happen with Jay. I just think that it's in his best interest to learn a few English songs. If it happens, well see.
Just a little cowboy logic for ya'll

i wouldn't necessarily deem it to be a shame. i think jay actually does know some english. not fluent by far, but can understand and speak a little at least. i believe it's his choice whether or not to master english. he doesn't want to conform to what other people are doing. why should he sing in english? why should he improve his english skills? is it b/c english is superior? will he be looked down upon if he doesn't know it? i think jay should do what he's comfy with musicwise. at this point, i don't think he'll enjoy singing in english. and if he's just throwing in a line or two for the SAKE of singing in english, i'd rather that he didn't do it. that would change his whole philosophy of walking his own path and doing what he wants to do. if he feels comfortable singing in english one day, i'm sure he'll experiment with that and share the results with us. but only when he finds it to be diao and not b/c everyone wants him to do something in english. plus, he's mentioned in a recent radio interview in HK that he doesn't want to touch people with words/language as much, he wants to reach the world with MUSIC, which i believe can transcend all language barriers and strike a chord in everyone's heart.
I can't agree with you more, wackycashew!
Music should be able to transcend all language barriers. We Americans often feel that our language is superior because face it, we are the most powerfl country in the world. Therefore we expect other countries to learn English, not the other way around. So we end up with fobby Asian artists trying to incorporate English into their songs, and thereby RUINING the entire song (OMG the absolute worst are the Korean ones...like Shinhwa and H.O.T their "English" rap always leaves me like :glug: i.e.Shinhwa's 'Wedding' lyrics-"Yo, let's take it from the top, hot box, booming system, floshing pure rocks..what up pops? crown royal") Yes, it'd be nice if Jay could learn fluent English (I think he's taking lessons right now, right?) so that I could completely understand what he's saying. But it's his choice. Besides, when you consider the fact that mandarin is the number #1 language as far as in how many ppl speak it...do you think he really needs to learn english?

hmm i guess jay could pick up english if he wants so that he would croon some english songs for us..but its still okay if he dun do that..like him for who he is anyway..
hmm mjay thats a great idea..maybe he could get someone else to rap in english in one of his songs for him..that would be quite cool..alrite why didnt i think of this idea before..haha..
but if he isnt really that good in english..i dun think he should include it in his songs..heh or he can just mumble thru and try to pass it off as something impressible..that would be nice for a change too..but even tho he dun know english..it doesnt stop fans from liking him rite?its the same as us liking jap artists and adoring their faces like we do to jay..heh it depends on the feeling most of the times..unexplainable..

I think he should learn some english, so that it will be easier to communicate with the ang mohs like me!
But don't put them into his songs. It will sound weird. As though He's like one of those "normal" singers who mixes Engilsh and Chinese in a song. :?

I don't like english in chinese song..it just destroy the song mood  ..I believe Jay doesn't feel ashamed in his english and he 's so pround of his chinese song as he dream to bring his chinese song spread throughout ASIA (from TIMES mag) :wink2: . I saw from a thread in this forum he just started to learn English..but I think he 's quite good as a beginner at least his accent is quite ok (at least I can catch what he said in mv)

I just don't understand why Jay has to learn English to communicate with fans. Yeah...blablabla his fans are important and he needs them blablabla. But it's hard for him to learn English, and he don't need to. Fans who want to communicate with him should learn some chinese!

itz a shame you created this topic .. :)
let Jay decide rather or not he should be mastering another language or not .. the guy is probably busy to the maxx.
the more time he spends learning english .. the less time he has makin music!! you wouldn't want that do you?! if i were Jay i'd master my cantonese first .. i wouldn't want him rappin in english anytime soon .. that'd sound too much like Edison Chen :) :) :)

it's such a shame coz there's so many english speaking fans here
and it would be nice if he sings english in some of his songs.....
dun u think??? something like "i love u" would b nice
Or i could teach him english at no cost at all .... i wish... lol
I agree of what you said as there are a lot of fans from western countries who like Jay, it is also a international language, that means that it will be very useful even if he don't wants to be a singer anymore as it is very useful nowadays in many countries and if he use some english in his music, it will attract a lot of fans from the western countries.
i think JAy is really good... goos enough with his all chinese in his songs... the latin influence he had in the song really shocked and surprised me alot... a very pleasant surprise though...
english??? i don't know... maybe it will also be a pleasant surprise... especially being a fan who doesn't understand chinese... but i love anythin Jay sings so it doesn't really bother me... once i can get the translations i'm fine...
maybe though i will love his english music too... once he doesn't make it too westernized... cuz i love the chinese music itself... i.e. the instruments...
so in conclusion... english or no english...
just keep singing Jay!!!
ps. i got his latest album and i am waiting for a new one... any language works for me... once Jay's singing ^_^

If he is taking english lessons now, it shows that he didn't pay much attention in school! hehehe. Must be dreaming all day about being famous one day...
Yes I must agree, the english rapping in edison's songs...very...disgusting? It sounds rather fake, and it doesn't match with the rhythm of the song...

well unless he has matered his english, he shouldn't speak english at all...
i don't mean that he should be a professor or somethin but his pronounciation of english ....
i'd like to see him once in a while make an english music...
entirely english!!!isn't that great.... :)
also if he wants to talk to his fans that have troubles with chinese...
and he'd want to have more and more people listened to him...
and he wants to go international!!!
he should've mastered english!!! :wink2:

i personally don't think he needs to learn english. why should he? he's getting along fine without it, and it makes him a lot more unique and sexy when he doesn't throw in random english words that don't belong. of course, i'm biased because i'm taiwanese. but that's just me.

it'd be really cool of jay would learn english! i mean yeah, his english sucks but i think it will be really cool if he wrote an english song so his fans from all around the world can understand him. i saw one of his hongkong interviews when he was wearing this hawaiian shirt and he said i love you forever and some other english phrases and i think he needs improving.. i personally would teach him english if he wants to! for free!! lolz :bleh:
jay's English is not VERY well, but thats doesnt matter, mostly, his songs are Chinese, so, WE have a BIG problem to understand his songs, but NOT JAY~ :wink2:

Although i do want to hear him sing in english, i prefere that he didnt. It would be nice to see how its like for him to sing english but he isnt good at it and many people wont like it so it may ruin his sales. I think he should keep singing in chinese.

12-27-2003, 05:31 AM
yes yes!!! i dun want jay to put in any english in his songs. because it makes him uncool. esp words like "i love u", sorry phyxius. but....
haha, but i did neard him sing english words before. in the shanghai concert, he sang "i believe", so... there goes the "i believe..." i mean no body can pronounce these 2 words wrongly, they are simple. and jay knows a bit, a tiny bit of english like elephant, but think he doesn't know dolphin and also dunno how to spell elephant. haha...
but yah, it will be really good if he buck up on his engliah then at least it will be easier for him to break into the western market and get his dream grammy awards

I just reckon that once you master a language in particular, you'll have the acent of that particular language. Hence when you speak another language you'll have the ancent of your mother's tongue.
It would be awesome if I could get to learn Mandarin - that way, I could sing to Jay's songs :D.Right now I'm striving myself to get into uni so I can learn Mandarin. It just feels so awkward when you're sitting with kids that are half of your height in chinese class. :|

in my viewpoint (after giving it some thought) he really SHOULDNT sing in english, as in straight english...
he wouldnt get that much respect and its just not him
besides if he does, he'll be put through a hell of criticism (esp if he doesnt pronounce well)

yeah dudes i agree with ya'll. i think jay is the only real artist out there who sticks to chinese, in fact i like it when he uses taiwanese too. since he is taiwanese. i'm sure he knows plenty of english though, since everyone in taiwan has to learn it in school. he probably just doesn't have any practice with conversational english...that's ok ill speak chinese to him anyday!

01-09-2004, 08:51 AM
I guess it'll be cool if he knew english..but i think the songs should remain chinese...coz most of those ohter chinese songs just suddenly come out with english words in it...thhat what makes JAy's songs unique(CHINESE)!

01-09-2004, 11:43 PM
i think it's great that jay doesn't use english in his songs because they make them uniquely chinese music. also because he fuses eastern instruments. i really like david tao and think he's incredibly talented, but his music is to me just sounds like american music sung in chinese. i think jay's great because he's really singing chinese music.

01-13-2004, 01:13 AM
sure it would be great for him to master english...its a common language and it might help him out alot...sure it'll be cool..but i agree with "Jisushika" that his songs should still remain in chinese...because i really dont like to see chinese artists singing in chinese and then all of sudden singing out an english phrase...it just doesnt really match..and i dont want Jay to be like the rest of the pack...he has to be different..thats why i like him and his songs..! :yeah:

well........personally i really want jay to learn english..or cantonese...(he can choose)
basically so that if one day i get to meet him...i'll at least be able to talk to him....
it would be horrible if he sang in english....coz like there would be a full accent kinda thing...and it'll jus be a joke....
but i wouldnt mind if he sang english as a joke for some funny show...
it would be good if he knew canto...coz then i could also speak to him....

i don't think there will be a accent thing because Coco Lee sings english songs really well and english is probably her 2nd or 3rd language so i don't think the accent thing matters.
well that's my opinion so many might disagree with me but i aint seen anyone who have sang really badly in english who are chinese/mandarin/taiwanese.
we'll have to see if Jay's english is coming along and then he might release a song in the future, that is in english !!! :excited:

CoCo Lee is different as she grew up speaking English and if I'm not wrong, even lived in the States for a while, which explains her American-accented English.
But if Jielun were to learn English now, he'd definitely have an accent that wouldn't be very nice. You hear it all the time when you watch dubbed Hong Kong movies and sometimes the characters speak in English for some reason or other and the voice actors' accent are mostly really bad.
So my point is, I think Jielun can stick to speaking only Mandarin if he can't be bothered to learn English (which is what Time magazine reported when they ran the cover story on him, that he doesn't really care to learn). It's not like he's dependent on learning English to survive... obviously...

it is true that the singers who try to speak english is quite weird because their pronounciation is sometimes wrong and the accent too. oh well

i know!! i'll marry him instantly if he knows how to speak english...then he'll be perfect..but like i always say...english barrier..!! u gotta think of the long term thing then....if u do get a chance with jay...then he can never communicate with ur friends since they only speaks english...i wonder how good is jay's english...he knows basic english as in how basic? i am sorta confused...i read some news about that he's bad in every subject in school...but he's only good at english and art? but there's this other news that saids he doesn't touch the subject engish...so how good is his english?

yea..... I dont think any Taiwanese, Korean, or Japanese singer should sing in English unless they are actually good at prounciation and are relatively fluent. I dont think its embarassing cause my English is still accenty but like, I don't see the point in singing in a language that you can't speak relatively fluently and make the words sound close to native in pronounciation.
Its like BoA singing in Mandarin or English or Japanese even. Sure she can do it.....but her Chinese is definitely poo and her English while understandable is very bleh sounding and her enounciation is way too soft. And her Japanese is pretty good but, wth?! She cannot pronounce the whole ra, ri, ru, re, ro sounds without making it sound like la, li, lu, le, lo. But for someone like Vanness or David Tao it works cause they speak English really well.

actually, I hope that he never puts any english in his songs... cos let's face it, his english sucks, and I hate how chinese singers put english in their songs just to look cool.
Unless he releases a song that is entirely english, but that would probably be worse lol. I say just let him stick to what hes good at
i definitely agree. jay SHOULDN'T because:
1) he'll make himself look bad
2) he'll look typical/unoriginal... cliche almost
3) why is it necessary at all? doesn't it HELP his english speaking fans with their mandarin anyway?
4) chinese is such a cool language :yeah:

he does not need to add any english in his songs at all every singer has their own way of singing so keep it natural

He was born and raised in Taiwan.. and he also did badly in school in English.. But I don't think it's a shame. He can make chinese music and thats what he's good at. when i first saw the MV of "can you hear' and "double saber" i thought he really knows how to speak english because of his script "hi! how much is this" in "can you hear" and also when he is talking to the girl in"double saber" i thought he has a good accent... i was wrong.. it's totally scripted.. jay must've practiced all of that...but it doesnt affect my admiration for him.. even he doesnt master his english...

Why would we wanna change his type of songs?? i think it's like changing him to fit ourself to love him~ if it's for me, i would require or ask him to sing something, coz i'll like whatever he sing, coz i'm his fan! keke
well... as for myself, i'm more shame myself coz keke.... lol i'm a chinese myself and my worse subject is chinese!! i can read and speak like a pro chinese! but when it comes to writing... lol die~~ keke. Well, so we really can't blame jay for not being to be an English master! ^^

I like Jay's music as it is...Even though I don't understand the lyrics coz I'm not Chinese. And I would really appreciate it if he would come up with an English song in the future. But of course, it will still remain to be seen, if Jay would give in to the thought. But I can't see it coming any sooner.

yep yep Jay doesn't try to be "cool " with english in his songs and he would definitely not include useless english sentences in his lyrics. I feel so much asian pride in him ^_^ But still, it would be nice if he could sing a simple song in english, just for us! or maybe in french hehe, I'd laugh my ass off....

hm..i'd rather not jay master english...cos i just couldnt imagine him singign about girls shakn their booties...adn everything...and espeshly makin the MVs...the MVs in america..is soo different...it has girls shakin their booties and everything... it's just alot of sexual content... and jay would obviously have to have sexual content to some degree...... hip-hop is now the dominant genre of music in america...and a majority of it u kno...has some content...but it's of course very easy for jay to turn things around if he does master english and begins singin in english

i dont think its a shame....i hate those chinese singers that try to sing in english but fails to convince people that they know english....it annoys me so much i want to cut their head off...
lol...but it would be nice for the many fans out there that just know english...like a gift to them..
but anyways, jay shouldnt (and probably wouldn't ) change because everybody else does so...it wouldn't be diao
besides, why must a chinese artist be forced to sing in english?...not like many english-speaking artists get forced to sing in chinese...
  and if he does sing a song about girls shaking their booties...i woudn't know how to react...probably lose some respect for him ...but i wouldn't be able to stop laughing

rui en, as a fluent english speaker, once said that when jay talks in english, it's utterly funny, isn't that right? don't be ashamed jay!!! i think jackie chan has worse english than you! he has broken english  unlike you who can at least say short phrases with correct grammar. c'mon, we've seen you show off some nice english in the shung dao mv.

it indeed is a shame cos he won't be ever to view or understand anything frm this web... hehe... but it's not his fault of nt mastering it... in Taiwan, english is not a very commonly used language n Jay had always not have good interest in studies so of cos he did not master the language well... but thanks tat he didn't have interest in studies more than music... if not he might become a top student n takin music jus as a hobby n there won't be this web as Jay won't be a singer n we won't noe him.haha.

I know..its so sad, I mean he is my idol, someday I want to meet him, but not being able to communicate and tell him how I feel about his music is such a loss. So im learning mandarin, not only to talk to him someday but also my own good. Ive wanted him to be able to speak english many times, but this is who he is, and I don’t want to change that. :wink2:
and besides singing just in chinese without any english is kinda hot... :excited:

I also wish that Jay should pursue learning English. He should realize that he already has a lot of fans that are from non-Chinese speaking countries. He is very nationalistic and would rather have a translator but I think that it is better that he learns English to make his fans happy.
not really...his indifferent to learning english...i'm willingly to leanr mandarin to understand his songs!! haha i am viet...haha
but he got me with the Qing Tian song...i loved ho he played the cello...

o come on~ it's not like he's has to learn every language in the world. but yeah i agree it would be kinda nice if he knew english. but isn't his english cute? you know, at the end of "Ni Ting De Dao" he's like "uh, excuse me, how much" that was totally~~ cute! he's got his style in saying it. if he did know english, he wouldn't have that cute accent! and i don't really like chinese songs with english words. chinese is cool. that's why i listen to it! what's the point of listening to chinese songs and hearing lots of english? i actually don't mind jay the way he is xP

i guess that im sitting on the fence... if he does master english, i would be able to communicate with him, since my mandarin translating skills are so crappy. n i read sumwhere that he has wanted to talk to foreign models sometimes but he thinks that his english is not good, that's why he has been deemed a shy boy... and honestly, i would rather him not learn..it's doesnt lower my chances to be with him... n, yes, im quite willing to learn chinese because of him..
on the other hand, if he doesnt master english, i wouldnt be able to communicate with him, considering how thick the chinese pinyin dictionary is...

Maybe he should learn english for better communication.
But I hope he ain't using english in his songs. Because the whole style might be destroyed by english! His rap, and how he sings, you know, the style, is still better in chinese.

But I hope he ain't using english in his songs. Because the whole style might be destroyed by english! His rap, and how he sings, you know, the style, is still better in chinese.I agree. There are so many Chinese songs that would be "perfect" (to me :D) if only the English parts were taken out. Vanness Wu, for example, has a lot of great songs but I feel that some are "ruined" because of his English raps. I must say his English is really good, but the words seem to be weird-ish. Like in the intro to Body Will Sing / Shen Ti Hui Chang Ge, he says something about "g child". It always sound like he's saying "Jay Chou" though lol. There's also lines like "I'm making it magical with more in store" that just make me want to laugh XD. I think it would be cool if Jay decides to learn English, it would definitely bring him closer to many of his fans living in mainly English-speaking countries (like Canada! =D) because they will be able to communicate better with him. Mastering English (or at least learning the basics) would also allow for Jay's fan base to expand by attracting listeners from more countries. I just hope he doesn't decide to incorporate his new language skills into his songs.. unless he can use it in a way that adds to the song =)

I really don't mind that jay hasn't put english in his songs and i don't really care if he masters english or not. in my opinion everything is just way cooler in chinese. azn pride! it annoys me so much when asian singers try to stick some english into their songs because it really just doesn't fit in. they can't even sing it properly and it makes me really never want to hear the song again. if he made a entire song in english, that would be even worse -_- i personally don't think that he doesn't need to put in the effort to master his english just because he would probably never use it alot.

it wld be rather a pity tat he does nt master english....bud....who cares rite...as long as his music fantasy jus carries on......we shld nt get bothered by the fact tat he does nt noe english....even if he carn speak the language....he will still be our JAY CHOU!!! i think wad counts is his sincerity he gives out....he wans us to appreciate his music,NOT his language or his pronouniation or wad.....
perhaps for some english-speaking fans....sometimes it gets a bit fustrated when u carn understand his interviews, speech or mayb newspaper articles....bud still,no matter wad we give him our 100% support.....so wad if he carn speak english......
i guess he has the freedom to choose whether he wans to learn a new language or nt....nt for us to decide im sure......for me,i support his music all the way, even though i mayb nt understand some lyrics in his song......

Sigh, quite frankly, I don't care whether jielun can speak English or not. If he can't or more likely doesn't want to, then heck I will master chinese, taiwanese or any other language that he speaks that I dont....hahaha
And yes, I agree with alot of you that throwing in some english words in chinese songs and then butchering the english pronounciation is AWFUL!!!
(But in terms of like chinese hip-hop/rap, only jielun and pan weibo can do it convincingly)
Cos while I'm mostly bilingual, I'm quite the purist when it comes to languages and English is as much my first language as Chinese (prob even more so) and it bugs me when it's abused/mis-used...
BUT having said that, I'm ALWAYS available to tutor jielun in english if he shld so need it.
hahaha...
Actually, I have seen tt hk clip of him speaking in English..it isnt tt bad actually, his pronounciation was quite nice...sigh and the voice was quite sexy..deep.. nonchalent...haha..so this is out of point..

i also think it's too bad jay doesn't speak english very well. i guess he doesn't need to, since he's already so successful and could probably live off what he's earned so far for the rest of his life, but he could reach out to more people if he could sing in another language! i always think learning multiple languages is a good idea, because communication is so important. well, at least jay can speak taiwanese, mandarin, and a little cantonese, so he's safe for the chinese music industry haha

i dont think its too much of a shame. at his age, for him to master english would be extremely hard. and we must remember, jay is not so bright in some fields. i dont really care if he does or doesn't incorporate english into his songs or make an english song. it might completely ruin his style because he's so use to writing for mandarin. even though i dont understand what jay is saying half the time, it's ok. im learning. :-)
i just watched the shuang dao movie MV and heard jay speak english. it wasn't too bad, but like all he knows how to say is thank you and yah or something. the movie was so funny. i couldn't help but laugh, but i guess it wasn't intended to be funny.

Maybe he uses sign language. Hmm I think he does know a bit of English just that he is not that fluent in the lanuguage itself..
Totally agreed :wink2:
I don't understand chinese either, but it doesn't bother me when he speaks in Chinese during his concert in Singapore. He still amazed me.
although i hope he would speak English, i'm not hoping he put english words into his songs

I don't see a problem with him not being fluent in English...I mean he should be able to say the bare minimum like I love you...and other simple stuff but unless he can become great in English, he should stick with Mando. Besides, I hate it when non-English singers put English in their songs...I always laugh at their accents...they should either learn it well enough to pronounce it right or they should leave it out...don't think there should be a compromise anywhere. Take Vic Zhou's Make a Wish...he always seems to be saying Mack a Wish or something similar....just sounds silly to me...

actually i'd prefer him not knowing any english.
he's chinese, he speaks chinese, there's nothing shameful about not knowing english.
i think it's cute of him not knowing english. it's unique, it's HIM.
i don't like singers who try to show off their knowledge of english by sprouting phrases of english here and there while doing interviews in chinese.
it's awful.

lol i realised that i have been like a mad woman here :D
i used to hate myself being a chinese...coz i was very crazy over being an 'ang moh'...but now to think of it..i realised how stupid i am.
i realised that we chinese are very weak. in the sense that we get influence by people from other races very easily especially the americans. for example, music. look back at some other artist...they have been like translating their songs and singing their songs. and most of them are from those idol groups...
i see no sense of glamour or any thing worth to be proud of whenever i heard those songs...

I think it is up to Jay whether he wants to incorporate english into his music, and if he does or doesn't I still would support him and continue to be a fan. If he was to learn english then i hope that is just something that he does for himself and not be forced or pressured into doing, cause i am learning mandarin because it is something i want for myself and hoepfully benefit myself for the furture.
anyway that was just my two cents on this topic

so if he cannot master english, it will not make a point to us.. for those who does not understand will be able to seek help from those who understand it and is able to reanslate it.. this is what has been done here... so i guess it is not a shame if Jay does not master english.. he is for who he is....
just my 2 cents worth!!!

yea, i think he shouldn't try to add english to his songs because it'd just be too weird. and he wud have that 'fob' accent that is sooo annoying and it makes it sound like he's tryin' to make himself more appealing to mostly english speaking people. i have friends who don't noe any chinese, and aren't even azn who still like his songs and know all of them. so jay should stick to what he knows. although, i wouldn't mind him giving an interview in english or something once in awhile. xP

It might be nice if Jay could understand English and he might be able to communicate with more of his fans, but i really don't mind. I personally wouldn't like it if Jay started putting English into his songs. I mean, lets face it, its REALLY ANNOYING when some chinese artist's do that...I think Jay should just stick with what he has going now. I agree that Jay doesn't have to master English and that he should stick to mandarin in his songs. That's what makes him Jay. He symbolizes the Chinese music industry. (well that's what I think  ) He sticks to his roots. He doesn't conform to what's popular. He is who he is. And that's what makes him stand out.
If we really like his music why don't we learn Mandarin instead of Jay learning English? Well I know some people are trying to do that and good for them! I think that he should learn some basic English to reach out to his foreign friends but he shouldn't have to master English.

I do not think it is a shame at all. Speaking English is not a must in today's world of music. In today's music world, being outstanding is good for your sales and I would think that Jay is not conforming to the market expectations by learning English. Sure, he does apply the concepts of R&B and rap into his songs but he used Chinese in his songs instead to give us a whole new genres of music like his own. Furthermore, the usage of taiwanese dialect is also unique. If he is comfortable with using Chinese and he can produce good music out of it, I would say why change your style to suit the market? It should be about producing what you do best and influencing the others. After all, Jay has always like to work using his own style and not follow others.

i rather have him keep his songs in mandarin then for him to add english to it. it would seeem different if he had english in it. i mean like his music has a combination of asian instruments in it and i dont know if it would sound right with english words in it.

he did mention that he want to know english in order to become an international star to other countries. i don't think it's a problem for him to put english in his music. he just needs to speak english when he introduces his music to other parts of the world.
when he came to NY's concert, I thought he would say something in English - "Hello," "Thank you". He already said that he speaks poorly in cantonese. It just makes it harder for me b/c I had no idea what was going on when he was talking to us in the concert! hehe

God, i'm SO HAPPY he just sings in Mandarin with the expection of "Baby" in Long Juan Feng...but yeah I agree, i hate when chinese artists who CLEARLY SUCK at english try too look cool by adding random english phrases that sometimes don't even make sense into their songs...and those artists who try to sound cute so they make their voices all squeaky.....*TURN IT OFF!!* haha sorry if i'm offending anyone...but it's just my opinion...don't bother replying coz it's not like i'm gonna check if anyone's chucked a hissy-fit at me...anyway...
I just think it's a shame that if he did a concert in a country where english is the main language...e.g. AUSTRALIA!!!! he wouldn't be able to communicate with the fans who aren't fluent in mandarin...i mean, myself included...sometimes when i watch clips of him live...i have to listen a few times to catch EVERYTHING he's saying to the audience...if i were there...i can't replay it and i would've missed out...

it's not too late for him to learn english, but since it looks like he's made no attempts to try and learn the language maybe he just doesn't want to.. or, you know how his old teachers once said jay was hopeless in his academics, maybe he tried to learn and was overwhelmed and couldn't do it and decided he didn't wanna do it anymore..
he can just produce or write music for english-speaking artists instead, i'm sure he can be successfull doing that

03-31-2005, 08:40 AM
actually, I hope that he never puts any english in his songs... cos let's face it, his english sucks, and I hate how chinese singers put english in their songs just to look cool
hm, I'm pretty sure I've heard Jay say "baby" in one of his songs once..although I can't pinpoint which one, and the only reason I remember was because it particularly irked me to hear it, since a lot of asian artists like to put heavily accented english words into their music sometimes, and it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the song..
speaking english decently would be good enough for Jay, I think, not so much for the sake of putting it into his music without an accent but because it'd be nice to be able to address his English-speaking fans personally during a concert. As for mastering english, well, i don't think he needs to speak eloquently to his english-speaking fans, just enough that he doesn't make himself look bad with really bad grammar :wink2:

shame?i don't think so..he insists that he will never use any english word in his songs is a good thing...afterall this is his special way of expressing his talent..but he does need to master english though in order to let him communicate better with fans from all over the world..especially those that only speaks english..

I would hate it if he ever put English in any of his songs. It already bothers me when other chinese singers do it. Especially when it doesn't make any sense.

it would be great if jay would use some english in his music. but even tho he doesn't, his songs are still a hit to me. even tho i don't understand some of his songs. but i still like the tone of the music that he sings and the song itself.

i think i like what jielun is now.
he's SO talented already and i think it's good enough for him. he knws how to rap well, sing well, play his instruments well, he can even dance a little already. he doesn't need to learn nor speak or even sing english and add it in his CD, i prefer it all-chinese. jielun's GOOD (: he doesn't need english. haha. i think when jielun doesn't adds english into his songs, it makes him looks much much more unique and outstanding.

I agree that he is great in chinese songs. The fan pool shows it. However, I feel that there is a need for him to master english. As he had mentioned before, he wants to break into the Western Market and he feels that there is not a need for him to master english ( I think -_-") As Music does not have any boundaries. But he should for the sake for communicating with the people over there...

I don't think is a shame that Jay doesn't mater English. He is what he is, can't blame him for that. Even if he doesn't master English, he's also so succesful and famous almost all around the world, even people who don't understand Mandarin loves him (including me). :) He can even play with so many kinds of intruments!
He specialist in many other things, not nessacary need to be English.
To master in something, all they need is practice. I'm sure Jay can do it if he wants too and of course, if he has the time to do so. But at least, he masters in Mandarin, there's some people who wants that so much but couldn't do so.
His songs now are great enough actually, what's the reason for adding in English words? Does that enhanced the song or something? In my opinion, not nessacary though. In a Mandarin song, and suddenly one English sentence pop out.

well.... i'd love it if he learns English, that way I could understand him better... but if he would speak in english, I want him to be speaking it very well when he does. Because I don't want him to be made fun of with his english...
but i agree with what some of you here said, that Jay wants to be known for his music, and music... transcends all barriers... no language is needed for one to love his music.
But i'm still hoping he'd one day speak in english... ^^

I think it's diao that Jay doesn't add English in, like other Asian artists b/c most of the time, you can't tell if what lanuage they're singing in b/c it all sounds so mashed together and mispronounced...
But I wouldn't mind it if he did do a few English versions of his songs, that is, as long as he 's confident in his English-speaking skills enough to do that.
Most of the time, Asian artists just learn what the words sound like and then go ahead and sing the song...
I can't imagine Jay doing that...

Well, I like him the way he is now.. I like the way he stays truly chinese and sorta traditional.. if he masters english, he'll be like the other singers who sing a few english words like 'i love you' in their songs just for the sake for it .. and he might become too westernized and lose his style. So NO it's not a shame his english isn't that good. I like him the way he is now (: whee!

i think it's alright that jay doesn't really know how to speak english. i mean, he's a chinese afterall. it would be much worse if he can't speak chinese properly, esp when he's a chinese.
i'm a chinese and i speak chinese fluently, but when i go to school my brain automatically switches to english and i speak it fluently too. i think it's really a fortune to be bilingual. IMO, english and chinese are equally important because 1)english is the international language now and 2)chinese is our mother tongue. i personally feel that it's a shame when my chinese friends say things like, "i hate chinese i'm not going to learn it it's useless." shameful.
anyway, i won't want to hear jay putting english words into his songs, i'd be sooooo turned off! well unless he's really fluent (and he's not). i CRINGE when i hear chinese singers say something which sounds like english in their songs. it's scary, it's like as if they're trying to act fluent when they're not!
ps. i'm proud of jay for saying no to piercings and tattoos. and smoking. (:
i'm no idea but i'm very very hope Jay sing a english song. that will be cool. and i dun like he pu eng world in his chinese song.

I don't understand mandarin at all (excluding a few words I pick up from his songs =P). But just the beat and the way he sings is really relaxing and sometimes powerful to the ear. This makes me want to hear it over and over again. To be honest, when Qi Li Xiang was released until now, i've must've listened to that song 3000 times! (Overexaggerate cause it's ALOT!) lol. But it would be nice for Jay to master or know the basics in english since it is the most widely used around the world. Err, but to use english in his songs...I know he's done that already, but VERY little (just touches on a word or two in a song), but if he were to make like a whole english song, that would be real "different". I quote that word cause right now I really don't know what i would think, good or bad....hmmmmm :worry:

Hm...it's not shame ! Doesn't mean tht if he write a english song would be nice! But if he does so...i still think the chinese 1 is the best ! coz he didn't learn English tho. so when he sing in english, it's kinda weird ! So i still prefer the original him...it doesn't matter that he know english or don't know!

well it would be nice if jay knew how to speak english and sung in english as well. but since chinese is his main language, it would be best to go with it. chinese sounds just right for him... and english.. well it'd be a big change. plus jay composes best in chinese! ^^

I will think that as long as jay knows basic english to be able to understand or converse abit, it is enough. There is no need for jay to specially learn and master the language to break into their industry. Music is not limited by languages. Haha! I am sure good music is universal. :D

I so agree with esther! Music knows no boundaries! Hmm... Didn't he took his incomparable concert all the way to LA last year? So I think with his current status and sheer musical talent, he already has what it takes to break into the western market! Let's give our Jay sometime, and I'm sure he can do so!

it is disappointing for me because i can't understand a word of what jay sings in his songs.. except for maybe "wo ai ni" hahaha  but i agree, i think it is much better that he doesn't sing in english. he should stick to what he does best and that is singing entirely in mandarin.
maybe i should learn mandarin??

hm.. i myself don't really care, but i think it would be good for his career if he did learn english.
i didn't know edison spoke english, but when i heard him speaking it, i was totally impressed XD he speaks it pretty well :3
anyway, because english is so universal, it could also help his career..
such as if he were thinking of debuting in america; he can't really do that if the majority of the population doesn't even understand what the heck he's talking about... no matter how nice it sounds.
oh, and though it's doesn't fit that much, a lot of asians get rejected for movie roles because of their inability to speak english XD i don't really think Jay will be looking for american movie roles, but just a thought :P

i think he should at least know how to speak a short conversation in english or understand it because what if i meet him one day on the streets *dreaming* and i'm like talking english to him and he doesn't understand a word i'm saying.. then i'll be so embarassed....
or he should understand cantonese because that is the only chinese language i can master at the moment properly.. i can sort of speak a bit of mano but i would be stuttering and i don't think he'll know what i'm trying to say to him because the way i'm saying it doesn't make sense LOL!!
or i could learn mandarin.. :P

doesnt reali matter, just that when the opportunity comes for me to meet jay...i cant speak english!! and i'll hav to speak in chinese...damn....

I would still support Jay even if he's never fluent in English. But sometimes I feel as if it's unfair to the English fanbase.I know he's a busy guy, however,I heard he's trying to learn English.
I was even planning to take mandarin classes sooner because of Jay.Because I always wanted to learn Japanese & Korean first. So maybe he can drop the pride & fear of embarrassing himself.Just to say on national television oneday that he loves his fans & thank you.
Those phrases aren't that hard & I think he would gain more fans, support,& respect for doing something like that.Overall,I truly think that many fans such as myself feels alienated sometimes when he only sings or speaks in mandarin.I'm willing to wait for Jay to learn English though & if he doesn't.I'll just have to learn mandarin dammit lol.:shifty:
i dont think so :?
even Jay english is bad but his songs in chinese is very good. i am not very sure if he sings english will be as good as he sings chinese...
but learning english is not a bad idea...

if you think about it,
it's funny how he doens't speak english
cause ever since initial D
he's been trying to get into hollywood
but then they told him that he's english is not good enough:rolleyes:
so he's not accepted
but then,
if he can speak english,
then maybe he'llbe even more famous,
maybe jolin tsai can teach him
she's a englsih major :glug:
Jay is coolest
12-08-2007, 06:38 PM
Yeah! Jay should remain the way he is. He should not be pressured to speak English. He's cool the way he is. It's ASHAME if you are Chinese and don't understand any Chinese. I know Chinese and I can't work out what he's singing about most of the time, but the music is nice enough to love.
English is no better than Chinese. So, should Jay learn African, India, Korea etc? He's a China Man, and I think that's really cute, and I'm so proud of him. I'm so sick of Chinese thinking English is more superior, yay, at least Jay's got it right.

It's a good idea for Jay to learn english. But I'm fine with his chinese songs. Although I just understand chinese a little bit I still love it.
And I think Jay should be just whatever he is.

Well, I don't think it is a shame. I know a lot of friends that don't understand chinese at all, like Jay's songs. I think what really important is people appreciate his music. Whether his english is good or bad, it doesn't really matter. X)

I am not Asian, and I only speak English. But I would NOT like it for Jay to start putting English into his songs. I think his Mandarin songs are better without English. Unless he was fluent, I think it would make the songs sound weird. It is different with singers like Leehom, because he speaks English native, so it sounds natural when he mixes the languages in his songs.
I do wish Jay would speak well enough to give an English interview, though. I was told once that Jay does speak a bit of English, so maybe one day he will work on learning more. If he wants to mainstream more into North America it will help him to be more fluent...otherwise it probably won't affect him much.
Actually, I am trying to learn some Mandarin. It is a much more beautiful language than English will ever be.
Akira

It'll be good if Jay could be fluent in english. Then it wouldnt be such a hassle to come to perform at english speaking countries.
But I definitely wouldn't want english words put into his songs like lin jun jie/lee hom
To be honest i totally detest those type of songs its so awkward
But english is not so easy, but I'm sure Jay is up to it!

i also would rather Jay not sing in English... i think he's great as he is... however i would really love it if he could speak some English in his concerts in other countries.... for example, when he has his concert in HK he'll try to speak some cantonese and sing cantonese songs... even thou his pronouciation isn't very good, i love it that he makes the effort... n when he goes to Japan for concert, he'll put in some Japanese... too bad in Singapore we speak Chinese too so during his concert here, there won't be any additional special parts like there is in HK and Japan.
.: blacklily :.
01-13-2008, 05:00 PM
Umm... I think it's okay for Jay not master English. I mean look at Japanese and Korean artists... They're not really good in English, yet they still swept fans from all around the world.
Like example in Japan, Arashi. It's only Sakurai Sho who can speak English but the group's still a big hit. And in Korea there's much more artists who can't speak English @ don't master English. Rain also doesn't master English, he's still "so-so", and yet his fans are spread all around the world.
So I think whether Jay master's English or not is not a big deal... As long as the person can appreciate his music, his language skills surely ain't a problem ne~~

i do wish jay can speak english but i hope he won't ever use them in songs.. like wilber or lee hom.. well, i do like them and their songs but mixing english into it makes it feels "westernized"
so i'm sorta glad jay don't do that .. no " yo yo " or " come on" in his songs .. however it would be best if he can speak english so he can communicate more world wide .. imagine him on stage and say " hey people!! thanks for supporting me. i love you!" in english .. fans would scream until their head pop out ..
but whatever it is , i wuv jay for jay .. for his music .. his lack of language disability does not bother me ..

i think it would be too much if he spoke english. I'm not really into stars from other countries getting into the whole english thing and then expanding into the US and all that. it gets too crazy. It also seems like they lose their identity at that point. It's kinda like watching anime in english: ew.

How is it a shame?
He spoke and grew with Mandarin language, now he is an international Chinese artist. What makes you think he would go through so much trouble just for the sake of "mastering" English?
He has shown us that he didn't need English in order to reach his current level, then again, does it matter? Will Jay Chou change the world's impression if he really does release an English album? I doubt so. Maybe the fans won't even buy it because we know Jay wouldn't be really singing in his best potential.
Sure, it would be great if Jay can speak English fluently like Lee Hom. However, we must remember that Jay is a Chinese and he grew with the language. Thus, there is no need for him to master English just for the sake of avoiding "shame".

I actually think it's a good thing that Jay does not know English. I don't know, I think it makes him seem kind of naive how he listens to Usher because he doesn't understand the lyrics that way. Without listening to American hip-hop music, where would he come up with ideas for his own hip-hop songs? He needs some kind of inspiration, but I don't want him to understand the lyrics for his own sake. :D Also, I don't think the American audience would necessarily enjoy a hip-hop song about chess or listening to one's mom, so I don't think knowing English would earn Jay any extra popularity.
Sometimes, though, his lack of knowledge of English results in him wearing bizarre shirts that I doubt he would wear otherwise, with random naughty English words on them. Jay seems like a nice guy who wants to be a good role model for little kids, since he said he wouldn't play a bad guy in a movie because it would set a bad example for little kids, so I don't think he picks out such shirts understanding what the words on them mean.
It is cute, though, when he sings in Cantonese and Japanese, and I'm sure he'd very cute singing in English, but, yeah, the American audience would probably make fun of him. He's too much of a nice guy to sing in English, especially hip-hop. At least, that's the way it seems to me.

i actually like the fact that jay doesnt speak english and doesnt incorporate english into his songs.
this really separates him from all the other artists who include fob english (*shivers*) into their songs just to seem cool and because its pop culture.
im happy to continue improving my mando skills by listening to his songs :)

im kinda glad he doesnt actually, well at least not in his songs. It wud be kinda funny if he spole english a teeny bit in a interview or smthing but i think that english in asian songs always sound wierd, especially if its sung by someone who cant pronounce it properly XP gives me goosebumps lol.

I have great respect to what he does and I prefer that he keeps his current musical style and not be pressured to incorporate anything that so foreign to him. If he is to learn English, let it be mainly for conversational / press purposes. Jay does Mandarin music soooo beautifully and that's all I can ask of him really.

I think a small line or a word of english in Jay's songs would be fine. I've listened to when Hmong singers put english in their songs, but it doesn't sound that good, so I kind of like it when it's just in one language. It's good if there is no accent and if it doesn't sound like it's being spoken by a foreigner. English and asian languages kind of clash when put together. It's hard to listen to because sometimes the meanings are completely different even when translated. I guess it's not a bad idea, but I'd rather he didn't.
