Wow, I find it weird that no one had made a topic about Brokeback Mountain yet, but anyways.. I've heard this film has been nominated for the academy awards, and won for best picture along with other things at the golden globes. From what I've heard it's a really fantasic movie, but it is rated R so I can't see it >_<

Oh, the director is Ang Lee, who also directed other movies such as Hidden Dragon Crouching Tiger, The Hulk, House of Flying Daggers, and Wedding Banquet. I think he was a taiwanese director and then came to the United States, I'm not sure. Ah, he's so talented >< I wonder what his next movies will be.. I read it was something with Zhang Ziyi...

Haha, anyways, back to the original topic.. yeah so Heath Ledger and Jake ..? plays Ennis de Mar and Jack Twist. I've read the book, actually the short story, and it was.. pretty interesting.. yeah.. >.< lol they really got um.. intimate so im curious as how far the actors were willing to go for those roles..

the ending is so sad >__<

Oh, the director is Ang Lee, who also directed other movies such as Hidden Dragon Crouching Tiger, The Hulk, House of Flying Daggers, and Wedding Banquet.

I believe it was Zhang Yimou who megged House of the Flying Daggers.

Well,about the movie,yeah,it's pretty interesting.
They call it the gay cowboy movie but I would really love to see it. :excited:
It's because Ang Lee is my favorite director and he's such a genius.
And besides, two cowboys falling in love with each other is much sexier than Paris Hilton doing frontal nudity.
And I really like the fact that the story is set in the amazing landscapes of Wyoming.

I'm already impressed with the rave reviews alone plus the film racked up some Golden Globes
so it's very possible that it will also rule the forthcoming Academy Awards.
And wow! It stars good actors. Heath Ledger,Jake Gyllenhaal, and even Michelle Williams.
And the tagline is wowzers too. Love is a force of nature.
I am really eager to see the movie but I don't know when it will be shown in the Philippines. :worry:

i believe it was originally a short story and not an entire book

I saw it... it's a beautiful movie with great acting. I looked away during some of the sex scenes though; I don't want to see a naked man, let alone two of them. The girls had their eyes glued to the screen though.

Ah, correction on that for House of Flying Daggers, Zhang Yimou is an amazing director as well, he always directed my favorite movie, The Road Home =)

Also, yeah. Brokeback mountain was originally a short story..A rather graphic one at that..>.> I hated it how they don't really talk much to each other..or the story doesn't really show them talking alot..>.<

Oh, the film was shot in Canada, not Wyoming. I think it was because Canada had such wonderful landscapes and it wasn't that expensive to film there XD

Lol, and did the actors really get..intimate..? >..< aii..

I watched the movie with my dad yesterday and man was it awkward with my dad next to me during those sex scenes

I think it's a really good movie and it has changed my perspective of gay people. Its also really sad in the end. I had tears in my eyes and so did my dad who never cries  really touching.

^ puahaha, you saw it with your dad? totally awkward!

this was seriously a great movie.. i really want to read the short story and how ang lee might have changed the perspective of the movie, i heard he had to make it meatier since a short story wasnt enough to make a full length movie.. but yah, i'm proud of ang lee for taking on this project!

it bugged me too that they didnt talk very much... but i also think that that added to the feel of their isloation up in the mountains, their silence helped to create a certain tension..

I thought this movie was alright. People kept on calling it the "gay cowboy movie" , but it's more than that. And I thought there would be more intense sex scenes because of the way people were talking about it.

The thing that annoyed me was the same tune that they kept on playing over and over again.

and the ending was sad and unexpected.

and Anne Hathaway is no longer innocent in my eyes!

I thought the theme music was really really beautiful! I enjoyed the film, even though i was not too sure if i could stand the love scenes before- iam slightly homophobic, but after watching it, i didn't feel as uncomfortable as i thought.

The love portrayed in this film really makes the fact that they are two males redundant. It didn't really bother or occur to me what type of relationship this was, because the love felt so real and you can easily imagine a heterogenous couple in the same position.

I think this film requires a second viewing to take it all in, it kind of haunts you afterwards too and makes you think about it over and over.

This highly-acclaimed film is yet to be shown in the Philippines
so I indulged myself in video clips taken from the movie. :wink2:
So far, everything I've seen were all great.
Makes me more curious, excited and eager to see this movie. :excited:
I liked how Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall spiced up their characters
and their performances in this film, from what I've seen so far,
is a notch higher than their previous bests. :shiny:
And I must say that Michelle Williams did a good job but Anne Hathaway kind of messed up.
The movie is up for 8 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture,
Best Director for Ang Lee,Best Actor in a Leading Role for Heath Ledger,
Bets Actor in a Supporting Role for Jake Gyllenhaal and Best Supporting Actress for Michelle Williams,
which is the same as saying that Brokeback Mountain automatically wins a Best Ensemble Cast award.

I like this one scene called Leaving Early where Jack roped Ennis and the rest is history. :bleh:
Their love scenes are something to look forward to. :brows:

I saw it with my mother...ya, awkward during the sex scenes!

Nonetheless...although movie was a bit slow, it has excellent cinematography, acting, and directing. Ang Lee did an incredible job at portraying the clandestine affection between Ennis and Jack...everyone needs to give this movie a chance no matter what stance you have on homosexuality- it won't completely change your mind, but it really presents a whole new dimension to you afterwards...

Hope it does well in the Oscars!

Oooh I loved this show.
Though I would have to say it was way overhyped so it fell somewhat short of my expectations.

I'd have to agree with countess about the need for a second viewing.
So far I've only caught it once since it's rated R21 in my country and I'm not fully 21 yet so I have to strategically sneak my way into the cinemas.
It's being haunting me ever since the last week I saw it.

I hate it when people just simply label it as the "gay cowboy movie".
Yeah basically that was what got everyone interested in the first place but the film goes way more than that.
I thought that this show may seem to be about homosexual love but I think the messages in the show are applicable to all sorts of love.
So I don't exactly understand why people insist that this film is receiving so much accolades because America wants to promote homosexuality. What a whole load of bull.

The casting was great! Heath Ledger literally carried the whole weight of the show. He seems to be made for this role, so natural. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams turned in superb performances. I can forever remember the look on Alma's face when she found out about Ennis' sexual tendencies. They all deserved the accolades, considering they were heterosexual and had to put themselves in the shoes of a homo. It's definitely not easy as can be seen of how majority of society still can't accept it.

Actually I don't think this film is very graphic. THE sex scene was very brief but it was essential to show how raw and intense their feelings were at that time. The film is quite slow-moving but I think it's a cinematic technique to express the mundane and strained lives of Ennis and Jack. Could just be due to my over analysis but that's how I see it.

Who could forget the last scene with the shirts?
And Jack's quote "I wish I knew how to quit you."
How the true love of two people becomes undermined by the norms of society and by their own restrictions.

Brokeback Mountain is a tragic story. And I think it's a classic story about love, not about homosexual love in particular. Just as how it could have also been possible to use this theme for a love between 2 ethnicities that is forbidden to love.

The fact that Ang Lee's film is able to break into the mainstream with such a sensitive theme deserves much praise.
I'd recommend everyone to at least watch this movie once in their lives.

omg, I know EXACTLY what you mean! When i saw the movied ended, and everyone started to walk out of the theater...i just had the feeling that it was such a depressing and tragic ending. But then, as you reflect upon it more, every scene comes back to you, and for me personally, my mind could not stop scruitinzing and closely investigating all the scenes that had a profound effect on me.

 That part made tears swell in my eyes...the relationship between jack and ennis is just so pure, so true...

this film really made me more aware of the intricate relationships and chemistry among humans - genuinely a masterpiece!

finally got to watch it with a friend a couple of weeks ago...

was moved to tears, especially towards the end....

i must say that the label "gay cowboy movie" is just a superficial label...its reallly a universal love story....about two persons who love each other so much but they cant really be together...

tragically it ends in death, very typical of the great love stories, like romeo and juliet...

i saw the cast's interview with oprah the other night...and i distinctly remember jake gyllenhaal saying/telling oprah, that he was always asked/remarked by fans/reporters, "that you're probably the 'girl' in the relationship, cause jack twist is the emotional one etc.." but some still say that he must be the 'guy' in the relationship cause he is the one 'pursuing' ennis (heath's character)"....

brokeback is a love story...so for those tragic-romantics out there, do watch it....

excellent cinematography (always present in an Ang Lee film)...great drama...a bit slow for some...

as for the awards, heath may not be the frontrunner but he deserves the nomination....even michelle williams' nom is well deserved...jake gyllenhaal's win in the BAFTA's, not to keen on that...

so you never really know who is who and what is what....BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS RELATIVE....

this movie was full of depth and meaning and i hate when ignorant people just simply say it's a "gay" movie without watching it first.

Seriously! whoever those people are who title this film like that are so base and narrow-minded! ...too bad for them because they are poisoned and entrapped by society's stereotypical nature!:rasp:
another downside was that the movie dragged a little.

I had the same feelinc, but in the end, i thought it was mainly necessary for Ang Lee to direct and pece it this way in order to accurately depict the desolate loneliness, idleness, and boredom out there in the country...it puts the audience in that mindset and prepares them fkr the development of the plot ahd eventually the unbreakable bond between ennis&and jack. but simultaneously, ang lee doesn't just waste the hours away...he uses this time to fully illustrate the magnificent beauty and grandeur of nature and its overpowering simplicity.

i really liked how they went with the story between the two lovers and what happened in the end... and it shows that true love is thgre and it doesn't matter if its$between a hetero or homosexual couple. all girls will probably like this movie because we all like love stories. =)
yep...ang lee masterfully led the movie viewer step by step to understand this intriguing bond between the two main characters as he leads ennis and jack into the development of their inextricable chemistry and dependence on each other throughout the years of their lives, even through their marriages with their wives

yep, i believe this movie appealed to more female viewers. for some reason, the majority of the males around me reacted to this movie (well, this topic over all) with vigorous abohorrence and with a haughty, condescending manner! i dont' know if they refuse and avoid to talk about this topic in general out of fear of being identified as "insufficiently masculine" or just outright ignorance... A great example would be my stepfather...ugh, the most obnoxious and obstinate man EVER! no one can disagree with him or something...anyways, he either mocks and makes fun of this film as the "oh...which one is this? the gay BROKE-BACK gay cowboys?" (and he has to say it with$such a EMPHASIS on those two words and then he laughs as if he had made a humorous remark...and we would all just stare at him... )lol.

Well, one cannot have prejudice over others juwt because of irreconciliable opinions, so i have nothing else to say about him. But I also know this other group of more enlightened, and open male population who actually enjoys and appreciates this film as a piece of accomplishment and artwork, not necessarily a "homosexual cowboy movke" that is trying to make a statement on the topic...which ang lee specifically pointed out was not his goal/aspiration to change the viewer's opinion or make e controversial film...I believe in ang lee's proclamation about life - the humans are very complex and intricate creatures that possess endless possibilities, emotions, capabilities, and actions, and it is somewhat of a duty for us to at least look more closely to the obscure path of the human mind and soul which dominates our existence.

:excited: YAY for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN:cowboy: !!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ANG LEE - OSCAR WINNER FOR BEST DIRECTOR!!!!:excited: :yeah:

I was just a bit disappointed that Crash and not Brokeback Mountain won Best Picture.
But then, Ang Lee's amazing cinematic masterpiece earned him the Best Director Osar!
The film also won for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. :clink:
Way to go! :yeah: To those who haven't seen the film yet,
you have to watch it. It's a must-see.

Yeah I was slightly disappointed that Brokeback didn't clinch the Best Picture award. But I haven't caught the other nominated movies yet so I can't comment on how justifiable it was.

But YAY, Lee Ang the first Asian to receive the Best Director!
So proud of him though I wouldn't think of this as his best work. Brokeback is a little too Hollywood-ish.

None of the casts won but well, they will forever get the best cast in my heart^^

BBM lost to Crash...

ohwell, just goes to show that academy voters are still a little bit off-put by the "gay" theme of the story...(Philadelphia, i think didnt got nom/win for BestPicture)

why can they get it in their heads that BBM is a universal love story...GAH!!!!

as the press people would say "it was the biggest upset for this year's Oscars, that BBM didnt win Best Picture"

i think it was a well-deserved win for Crash. it was a small film, but it had a lot of heart, courage, and a good storyline & great acting.

i haven't seen brokeback, but i'm expecting great landscape shots like in ang lee's previous film, ride with the devil.

i don't think it didn't win because of the gay characters. thinking that actually makes it seem like that is its only edge over other films vying for best picture...

well its been blogged about the win of Crash over BBM...that Crash won not of its own merit but because of BBM "being the controversial movie" that it was...

The Academy voters and the AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences)
as a whole probably thought that Brokeback Mountain is quite overrated
and was thus overlooked in the race for the Best Picture Oscar.

I have no hard feelings that Crash won as Best Picture.
I've seen the pre-Oscar specials on TV predicting that if Brokeback Mountain doesn't win as Best Film, then Crash will. The movie got good reviews. I heard it's a great film with a clever storyline about intertwining lives. I'm just not very impressed and a bit dubious of its Oscar victory because the producers of Crash
campaigned hard for the film during the voting season. The people behind the movie distributed thousands of copies of Crash DVDs to Academy members and to the every influential people in Hollywood. It also gained quite a controversy when its producers argued on who should take the credit for the film. With all those issues that toppled the gay cowboy romance of Ang Lee's film, the triumph of Crash was half-expected.

Sean: If you're really eager to see the film, just tell me and I'll PM you the link
where you can download the movie. :wink2:

arg! I thought Brokeback would do better at the Oscars..

I didn't expect it to win in any of the actors/actresses categories...but I thought it would win Best Picture! Even though it may have been that it was about gay love, Crash was kind of controversial...in a lesser extent. Wasn't it aout racial tensions in Los Angeles? I still haven't seen Crash...

I made an effort to watch BBM, when I read that Ang Lee direct it. It's really Ang Lee's trademark; beautiful scenes - subtle yet very strong expressions. *sigh happily*.
Kudos to Heath Ledger, he's so believable. I like the movie poster too. Now I need to read the book !.
