Thanks Pet for the explanation! It really helps. I guess I can start finishing my previous homeworks :D
Yeah, Pam went to Japan for a week and she told us about her journey in previous replies. Hearing those stories from her makes me wanna go so badly ><
What do you guys do usually when you're in Japanese classes in university?
My friend told me that if you go to Japan to teach English language, you'll get to earn alot ;)
That job is definitely in my list

Moonie, that's everyone dream job *sigh* ME too >.<
Agree! But not mine... As my English is too horrible... I can't even get the basics at times... :shy: however, I think it is a dream of many students who are learning Japanese Language. 3 out of 5 of my friends are applying for the teaching positions.. and they are really resourceful.. :bleh:
If I am not wrong, there is a worldwide programme to teach English in Japan. It is JETRO (?) I think... Maybe you all wanna give it a shot... :-)
Anyway, got my schook results back.. and no surprise.. but i got C+ for Japanese Language... Looks like i really need to work very hard so as to pass the various JLPT.

Pam - *high5* I thought it was just me who's dreaming of that job
Actually, I don't really like teaching, as I'm extremely terrible in explanations. Pam, you know me; answering questions incorrectly ><
Pet - Your English isn't terrible at all through the way you type, everything is fine. You should think about that job too ;)
Ask your friends to give us a little informations about the teaching programme  It's called Jetro? *runs off to surf the net*
Yukiko - Provided the kids are cute

Yukiko - You're teaching now too? That's nice, with this I'm sure you more qualified to teach Japanese in Japan after having the experience of teaching. By the way, how old are your students?
Teaching was never in my mind before. Somehow I have a phobia to stand infront of everybody

btw, im not teaching in the class. it's a private class. im just an tutor. my student is 12 years old.

I am graduating and now facing the problem with looking for job. But i've already signed up for Japanese class! haha... I am so happy about it.
thanks for the explanation. ^-^ haha^^ i learned something new today....=) and happy graduation, Petricia! ^-^ good luck w/ your job search! ^-^ oh, and i also think your english is fine too. ^-^ where are u from?
[moonie] haha^^ i also have a phobia of standing in front of ppl too. >_<
What do you guys do usually when you're in Japanese classes in university?
when i took japanese classes in university, we usually translated short stories/articles from english to japanese and vice versa. and we usually had to answer questions after we read the short stories/articles. and if i remember correctly, we had quizzes like almost every week or every other week. >_< i also had to write short paragraphs in japanese about something (like our reaction to a certain subject) and we practiced different japanese writing forms (like writing a japanese style resume in japanese). oh, and one time we had to write a japanese style research paper in japanese! X_o
[pamjung] it sounds like u had a lot of fun in japan. ^-^ u went by yourself?

Yukiko - A tutor. That's nice being one huh ^^ A 12 year old would be easier to handle.. I'm really afraid of young ones like 5 to 10 *hides*
What do you tutor them? Japanese?
ichigo fairy - Thanks for the explanation ^^ I don't do such things in my class though, maybe the level is different. I'm not still learning things like making a sentences with all types of different forms; and I must say, it's really hard to memorise them >.<

about the JET program....i don't think you need to be good in japanese in order to get selected for the program, BUT i'm not sure. someone that i know told me that one of her relatives (i think it was her relative) got selected for the program. he was a tour guide for english-speaking ppl at the hiroshima memorial museum or something like that. and another person told me that her son, who wasn't very good in japanese, got selected for the JET program too. but he had a lot of misunderstanding at first at his job in japan, b/c his japanese wasn't that good.
[moonie] oh yeah, oops. i forgot....>_< gomen gomen. i was talking about the 300- and 400-level japanese lang. classes. i didn't take japanese classes from the 101 level, so i don't know what those classes are like. sorry. >_< you're only learning vocabularys right now? yeah, it's hard to memorize them. i forgot some of the japanese that i learned in high school and in university b/c i don't use them. but learning japanese in high school was a lot easier than in university. LOL^^;;;;;;
[pamjung] oh, i also saw a cute guy when i went to japan. hehe^^;;;; i saw him at a train station in tokyo. LOL^^;;;; i think he was a salaryman b/c his hair wasn't dyed and he was wearing a black suit and a tie. oh yeah, there was another cute guy working at a bank in japan. hehe^^ he had black hair and was pretty tall and skinny.

ichigo fairy: Haha... Gomenne... It kinda slipped off my mind when i was typing the post and i have no idea where did the term Jetro came from... I am from Singapore. How about you? And.. Your classes are really tough. I also had to read articles and answer questions but not really translating, though i am beginning to think that translating is very useful in making one understand the sentence. (haha... I am S-L-O-W)
cookielmy: I agree with you but.. I would say get your basics right and you will do fine, not like me.. The higher I go, the more I wish I can turn back time and learn/memorise better. But the classes were awesome for me. I still think that it is going to be the one thing I'll miss most in my uni life.
Well... My job search is still 'nil' but then I managed to qualify for the pre-advance classes in the school that i signed up for! I haven't been revising and my classes are starting. I really hope I don't get tongue tied like that day. It was... embarrassing.
oh! and about cute Japanese guys...
I am beginning to think that it is not the nationality that makes them cute. It is the environment. Haha... The guys that I had met in Japan were simply cute... and they are already well-dressed. As in their fashion sense wise i guess. haha... Even this Singaporean guy who is working as a translator for the embassador is C-U-T-E. I still remember how we girls were whispering among us during the formal ceremony when we were supposed to pay attention to the speaker (not that we didn't want to, just that... It was all in japanese and they were simply too fast and formal for us to catch anything. )
cookielmy

ichigo fairy - Hehe.. It's okay. We're give new vocabs every lesson and we have to try our best to memorise as many as possible, at the same time we learn to build a sentence with different type of forms and grammar during the correct situation. It's really confusing though.
I'm taking JLPT exam 3 this year. I'm scared. It's just slightly tougher than level 4 right? ><
Yukiko - He's hawt? *drools* So far I've only seen one Japanese guy in my school through a student exchange programme, not thaaat cute though but he has a girly-looking eyes.
When I'm out at malls, most of the time I see Japanese girls instead.
There's another student exchange programme this year in my school, and this time there's this chinese eurasian guy, he's sooo cuute! My knees went weak when I saw him *faints*
Petricia - Yeah, I wish someone could have told me that earlier. I didn't memorise the vocabs very well previously, and now I'm having such a hard time trying to catch up with my class.
What do you guys do in class that made it such an awesome moment in uni life? Was there a hot guy? ^^
Yups, I definitely think so too. It's their environment. People in Japan has flawless face, it's as smooth as tofu. And maybe it's because of their diet too, all hygeine and healthy food.
Whoa, if I were to work as a translator in future, I may get to know lotsa hot guys too eh? Hehe..

[moonie] hmmm, if i remembered correctly, JLPT exam 3 was pretty hard and pretty easy. don't be scared. ^-^
[petricia] yeah, some japanese classes that i took were hard but some classes were easy. LOL^^ i don't think you're slow though. =) i think our teachers just teach differently. ^-^ and one of my friends told me that the teachers at the university that we attended expect a lot from their students taking japanese classes (if i remembered correctly).

ichigo fairy - Pretty hard and pretty easy? That sounds confusing ;p
Japanese classes aren't easy as I think it was at first. Things went well at the first few semesters, but things start to change when the level rises.
Now, everytime when it comes to Saturday; I would think of skipping class.
Do you think I should drop out? *hides*
Teachers in class really make a biggie difference. The first teacher I had was much better than the one I'm having now. First teacher was very much patient and she speaks slower so that we could catch every work she's saying. But now, it's totally another way around. *shakes head*
yukiko

cookielmy : he's so cool. ^^ really like his performance. and maybe you right, it's because of the environment. :p so we maybe have to live in japan too and become a cute girl ^^ :brows:
oh i have some problem with memorizing the vocabz. as for me, grammar is not a big thing, but the vocabs make me crazy :depresse:
cookielmy
06-18-2006, 04:37 PM
Yukiko - Yeah yeah, I actually have a though on that; migrating to Japan for good with my whole family. But the problem thing is that my whole family doesn't know Japanese except me.
My parents told me that they're going to 'throw' me to Japan to improve my Japanese
Lets shift to Japan together
Grammar and vocabs are two biggie problem for me. It's really hard memorising so many things at once. Things start to gather like a mountain high every week.

[moonie] oh, haha^^ oops....sorry that i confused you. i meant that some parts were easy and some parts were difficult. when u got ur scores back for JLPT exam 4, in which section did u score really good?
yeah, i agree w/ moonie about teachers making a big difference. my teacher for my japanese class in my senior yr. in HS was very moody, mean, picked (not picked as in getting called on to give an answer but picked as in being more meaner) on the shy and quiet ppl, made some of her students cry, and got mad at us when the class became talkative. some of her students thought she's the b-word. and some thought that she was mean b/c she was lonely. and others were saying that when she became nice to us (there were times when she did become nice to us but it didn't last long), that was when her b/f came back. and some were saying how can a person like her be engaged. no one really liked her (well, maybe the popular students did). and b\c of her i really disliked japanese for a while. my friend who also had her didn't want to take any more japanese classes at all.

06-22-2006, 04:35 AM
yes. that's right. i have one favourite teacher too here. i had her class in my first year. everything is so right. i can understand the lesson. all the class too. her explanation was so clear. and the way she teach is also so nice. interesting. but i only had her class in that 1st year.
in the next year, i had a bad teacher. not because she's mean. she's a kind person also. but the way she teach is not get into my mind. what is she talking about? i can;t understand her :(

oh and I thought that my parents would 'throw' me to Japan too >< and you said like it's EASY to migrating to Japan hmm
yuikio >> yes I understand, good teachers don't mean they have to me generous to us lol but they have to good at explaning. But I think the most of them have diffrent teaching style, you will have get use to her style and understand what she is trying to tell you somehow

06-22-2006, 12:40 PM
Yukiko - I think I'll 'throw' myself to Japan if my parents aren't doing it for me. Haha.. I'm always hyperbolized
Same problem here too. I can't understand my Japanese teacher now. She was saying so many things but doesn't seem to enter my brain.
ichigo fairy - If I'm not wrong, I think I scored the most marks in Kanji part. I hate teachers being mean too. My class teacher was forcing me to collect money for a donation to my school, and so I collected 10 bucks. And you know what she did? She hit me on my shoulder so hardly and told me to collect more
By the way, what's a b-word? ><
Teachers may be different when they're infront of students and their 'darlings'.
Pam - Phews. Must really study hard this time to make sure I get good scores.
It's not easy getting the visa to Japan huh. Maybe should visit the country through student exchange first. :)
Speaking of which, a Japanese student is coming to my class through Leo Club Youth Exchange. My friends and I planned to show her around .. My friends are taking me as the translator; is making me nervous, I really need to brush up my Japanese before she comes *hides*

I'm sort of scared of that day to come. I'm worried if I accidently said the wrong thing. In such situations, what type of conversation should we use?
Casual or formal?
petricia
06-26-2006, 04:19 PM
Well.. i would say 'go causal'. After all, if they are all your age.. the 'masu'-form should be enough. Don't really go into honorifics and stuff.. And if you are more familiar with plain form, you can go ahead... and also... body language is important...
I hope you have a wonderful day! Coz I did for all the visits, though it was exhausting, not to memtioned embarrassing (my japanese is really not good at all).
Anyway, my classes are starting soon! I am so excited but... I haven't revised yet. My God, i am really praying that i wouldn't get tongue tied.
yukiko
06-27-2006, 04:27 AM
Oopps, i did something wrong in my last post. i should mean JAPANESE. not english. im so stupid with this. :-(
by the way, as petricia said, just use masu form. or dictionary form. the short form from masu form. ie, nomu, iku, etc
pamujung
06-27-2006, 09:21 AM
Moonie >> nah student exchange *looking at my ages* but you gal, I'm so envy you seriously when I learned Japanese I never had a chance to practise my japanese with a native speaker !

cookielmy
06-27-2006, 11:51 AM
Petricia - My japanese isn't thaat good too. I hope she won't laugh at me. So I'll can either use the -masu form or the plain form huh. Alright alright. I prefer using the plain form though, is much easier and shorter ^^
But what do you mean body language? What do I need to tell her in body language? :shy:
Quickly go revise your work!
Yukiko - It's okay. Errors happen all the time ^^ Yups, dictionary form means is plain form. I shall use that when the day comes.
By the way, is your name July?
Thank you Pet and Yukiko :)

yumi, yuki, shizuka, sakura.. argh. can't find any good name :(
cookielmy
06-30-2006, 11:02 AM
I noticed many girls' Japanese names have -ko behind. What does that mean anyway?
Sakura is nice, but does it sound weird? Is like calling myself a flower :D
Shizuka means peaceful right? ;) Hmm, does the name Kokomi sounds okay?
Read it somewhere on the net..
pamujung
06-30-2006, 11:38 AM
Moonie >> there is no special meaning really
hmm what is the meaning of -ko, you can't ask something like that actually. You know japanese have the same sound but different meaning and kanji character eh
yup shizuka means peace, it always make me think of Shizuoka lol and kokomi sounds spooky to me
-vIt-
06-30-2006, 11:38 AM
I think the names with -ko at the end is really out of fashion..
they used to have it on everyone! it was so popular a long time ago,
but now.. no one has it..
ko= 子
which i think means child..
cookielmy
06-30-2006, 11:59 AM

yukiko
07-04-2006, 05:05 AM

and yes, shizuoka is a name of a place in japan. btw, which prefecture do you all like most? for me, hokkaido is my favourite, yeah eventhough i never visit there, but in my imagination, hokkaido is the most beautiful place in japan. especially the snow in winter
midori
07-04-2006, 07:04 AM

what would you guys choose?
petricia
07-04-2006, 08:11 AM
If I have to choose a place that I like most in Japan, I would chose Hiroshima! That's because my host family are there and I have a lot of wonderful memories there too. I really miss them.
A Japanese name... Hmmm.. Right now, I am so used to my katakana name that I can't really think of one. Ermm... I'll stick with my katakana name. Haha...
pamujung
07-04-2006, 09:16 AM

I don't want japanese name either, I prefer using my katakana name as Pet ^^

For me, any place in Japan I would love to go lol
yukiko

Midori - Megumi sounds cute. Why didn't you use that for your username in jcnet. By the way, what does midori means? Is it the colour green? ><
Kokomi kokomi kokomi
My name in katakana sounds weird. When my teacher can't pronouce it nicely.
Yukiko - You know what? I named my dog Ringo! As I find it really cute, moreover, it means apple ;)
pamujung
07-04-2006, 12:17 PM
yukiko >> nah.. my favorite place in Japan, I always think that different place has the different thing, they have individual characters. So I guess it would be great if I can go to any place in Japan and yet that time I think I will know which city is my favorite
kokomi aka moonie :wink2: >> then I want to know your katakana name ^^ and you named your dog "Ringo" how cute and yummy lol
midori means green
midori
07-04-2006, 12:34 PM
Pamujung and Cookielmy Midori can mean green, but it can also be beautiful bird, depending on what kind of character you use..
Anyone here eats Japanese manju? hehe I like them, they're soo good ^^;;
cookielmy
07-04-2006, 12:40 PM
Wooots, someone is calling me kokomi already
Uhm, my name is Mun Yee, in katakana it's written as 'man ii' So it's written like this; マ ン イ ー
midori - What's a manju?
pamujung
07-04-2006, 12:44 PM
 japanese manju ! if it's green tea flavored, then I can eat it. But you know every japanese sweet will be stuffed with red bean, and I don't like it. And they make them too sweet for my teeth, if you didn't eat it with green tea, you won't stand their sweetness.
cookielmy
07-04-2006, 04:15 PM
^ From the way pam said. Is manju a kind of candy or ice cream?
I love eating green tea flavour for anything at all. Especially ice cream *drools*
The taste is unique and it isn't too sweet. But its rather milky sometimes.
midori
07-04-2006, 07:55 PM
Manju is a pastry filled with red bean paste, but it could be something different like what Pamujung said. I think that's called macha. I like it but its kind of expensive for a pastry so I can't have it like everyday >.> lol

Here's the recipe and the picture of Midori's MANJU =P hope it's usefull for anyone here. especially midori, then you cant try to make it yourself since buying it everyday is so expensive and wasting
INGREDIENTS:
* 1 cup all purpose flour
* 2 tsps baking soda
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1/4 cup water
* 1/2 cup anko (sweet azuki beans)

I'm sorry Pet, with all the kanji-s there I could hardly read anything from it. I think Pam could do it, remember her saying that she's good in Kanji ^^ Lets wait a little while for her grand arrival.
By the way, which album? This year's album? I thought it's out in August.. So it's gonna be distributed to Japan first huh.
This time I'll refrain myself from downloading the demo-s online
yukiko
07-05-2006, 09:56 AM
mmm my office's computer can't read japanese.. :( sorry cant help you
cookielmy : have you d/l it? you already have it? give me give me.... can't wait longer. btw, time pass so fast.. it's already 8months since the november chopin. i still can feel i just bought it yesterday
cookielmy
07-05-2006, 10:18 AM
Yukiko - Of course I've not download it. It's not even out. What I meant was that in future if there's demo, I won't download it.
I regretted downloading November Chopin before I bought the album and I ruined my own suprise. :D
And yes, it's like just yesterday I bought my November Chopin. Hope this year Jay will come to Malaysia again for autograph session :)
By the way, I heard from friends that Japanese doesn't like the number 4 and 9. Why is that so? Chinese doesn't like number 4 too. Coincidence? ^^
pamujung
07-05-2006, 12:07 PM
midori >> yup macha = a type of greentea
moonie >> sorry to disappoint you, here my computer can't read kanji characters either
gosh.. which song is number 4 and number 9 ? I totally forgot, why time pass be so fast. I didn't feel like buying his album yesterday :bleh:
-vIt-
07-07-2006, 01:48 AM
cookielmy- Chinese and Japanese don't like number 4 because when you say it, it sounds the same as when you say "dead".
Like my house [im chinese], it's meant to be 44, but we changed it into 40.. don't know how they did it, but they didn't like 4s
as for 9, i don't know haha
pam- I used to can memorise the songs in November's Chopin in order! I wonder if i can still do it now..
From what I know, Chinese people don't like the number 9, especially with age, because it sounds like another word which means a long time. So there's a saying that things don't go well for people who has a 9 in their age like 19, 29, 39, and so forth
cookielmy
07-07-2006, 11:19 AM
I can never remember the order of an album. All I know is that the first song is Ye Qu :D
Die in Japanese is shinimasu, how does it sound like 4? :? For me, 9 sounds like a dog if didn't say it in a proper tone ^^
pamujung
07-07-2006, 11:43 AM
moonie >> it's the same 'shi' and I think 'die' = shimasu eh ?!
vit >> from my chinese class, there is one article about the bad number in chinese. There is a couple and they are talking about what number they will choose. All the number in chinese from 0 to 10 have a bad meaning and they can't choose any number
cookielmy
07-07-2006, 12:19 PM
Eh? Die is shimasu? Isn't it shinimasu :hmm: Oh yeah, I forgot there's another 4 which we call it shi also eh. Sorry sorry, my bad.
Haha.. chinese sometimes are too supertitious. But I'm really curious what bad meanings they have from all 10 numbers.
yukiko
07-08-2006, 05:21 AM
that numbers 0-10 have bad meanings? i never know it before. it's so interesting to know what the meaning, if you already remember it, mind to post it here?
i think *die* in japanese is shinimasu. a.k.a shinu. shimasu is *do*.
-vIt-
07-08-2006, 09:21 AM
yeah, yukiko is right, shimasu means to do something..
so when you structure a sentence it is: [something] shimasu
i never knew that all the numbers have bad meanings, but chinese like 8 because in cantonese it sounds like good fortune..
and taiwanese like the number 7, i don't know why..
yukiko
07-08-2006, 10:37 AM
so -vIt- you do know japanese also??
wow.. what a amazing girl.. a 13 years old girl but yet so intelligent
cookielmy
07-08-2006, 12:32 PM
Yups. That's what I thought too.. Shimasu is to play or do something wherelse for die is shinimasu.
I've just double confirmed it with my Japanese teacher today.
So Japanese and Chinese have some similarity eh; dislike number 4 :D
-vIt-
07-09-2006, 12:55 AM
yukiko- hehe, still a beginner, because at my school they don't have the option to do japanese, so i have to get a tutor myself.
Japanese language and chinese language are similar, not only because of the kanji and chinese characters, also when you say it, it has some similarity.
eg. sensei and shiansen
Anyone noticed Taiwanese [not mandarin] is similar also to Japanese?
It's both sensei for 先生.
yukiko
07-09-2006, 04:26 AM
the japanese dont like number 13 as well. if anyone here have chance to go to japan, you can check every building in japan skip the 4th and 13th floor. they wont name it 4th or 13 floor.
the japanese sound similar to chinese because historical japanese is modified from chinese. that's why japanese have kunyomi and onyomi. one is read similar to chinese and the other is the original japanese language.
some of japanese is same to korean also. in korean, kaban and chotto matte have the same meaning with japanese.
kaban means bag and chotto matte means wait. maybe the pronountiation is not as similar as japanese. but i ever saw one korean serial, and i noticed that.
and i think every languages must have a twin with others. Many of indonesian words is same in dutch. and many of english is the same with dutch also. they all related (i think so). Pardon me if i make any mistakes.
midori
07-09-2006, 06:53 AM
For the word "to die" can't you also say "shi ne?" I always thought that's what it was..
cookielmy
07-09-2006, 09:04 AM
Thanks for the info, yukiko.
I don't know there's the difference kunyomi and onyomi.. It's really amazing how people could change Chinese charcters to Japanese languages and writing.
Hmm, I'm not sure that every languages have a pair or another of the similar language. But Japanese language does have alot words plucked from English.
And I've noticed a few words like kantan (simple) and denwa (telephone) is almost exactly like Chinese ^^
Anyone noticed Taiwanese [not mandarin] is similar also to Japanese?
It's both sensei for 先生.
That's because Japan took over Taiwan for some time & Taiwanese people learned and spoke Japanese. As a result, some words like obasang, ojisang, etc are still being used by Taiwanese people
-vIt-
07-10-2006, 03:16 AM
the japanese dont like number 13 as well. if anyone here have chance to go to japan, you can check every building in japan skip the 4th and 13th floor. they wont name it 4th or 13 floor.
i don't get why they don't like the number 13.
I don't think chinese like number 13 too, but i never figure out why.
cookielmy - that's why they have katakana! to write english words
Why do you guys like Japan? Is it the language, the food, the fashion [I LOVE THEIR FASHION], their music.. etc.
yukiko
07-10-2006, 04:15 AM
from my lecture told me, she said that hiragana is came from chinese kanji character. if i have found an information about that, im gonna post it here for you all.
for 4 in japanese because when you called *die* in japanese, it sounds shi
Thanks for the info, yukiko.

maybe you haven't found it yet. come on all everybody list the word that have a same meaning in two or more languages
kaban (korean-japan) means bag
lamp came from dutch. but i dont know what the original word from dutch. in indonesian, we call lamp almost similar to LAMP in english. we call it lampu.
and DIE. in hokkian, chinese, japanese its all call SHI.
2 in japan and chinese is call NI
for 3 also, it call SAN
5 in hokkian and japanese is call Go
mm what else.. btw i think it's enough for this time
-vIt- i like ALL. :p the fashion, the ramen, the culture, the enginering, i love japenese. :D
cookielmy
07-10-2006, 06:53 AM
-vIt- - I love it all! At first it was Japanese dramas that made me wanna learn Japanese. So I went, and from all the classes, my likings for Japanese songs, food and fashion starts to grew. Until now, I'm still a fanatic for Japanese stuffs.
Yukiko - My brain isn't functioning at the moment ;p
-vIt-
07-10-2006, 09:46 AM
2 in japan and chinese is call NI
is it? 2 in japanese is ni, 2 in chinese is er
And to add to your list.. What about the writing style.. the numbers in chinese and the numbers in Japanese are all the same!
pamujung
07-10-2006, 12:55 PM
oops it's confused me sometimes when you learn so many languages >.<
the numbers in chinese and the numbers in Japanese are all the same!Because Japanese uses chinese character as Kanji  so not only the number, some character has same meaning and of course the same character. But sometimes the chinese (mandarin) characters aren't the same with japanese because it was simplified, unlike chinese (taiwanese).
the japanese dont like number 13 as well. if anyone here have chance to go to japan, you can check every building in japan skip the 4th and 13th floor. they wont name it 4th or 13 floor.yup they don't have the 4th floor, and even the room number 4 but 13, I'm not sure. I never heard about it too, I thought that is the badluck number for christian.

07-10-2006, 01:07 PM
I don't know if I mentioned here but.. initially (I mean ancient times) Japan has no writing system. If they were writing something official, it will be in ancient Chinese. As the language evolved, hiragana became a writing form used by women ONLY (the curves and flexibility of hiragana). Men could only use Chinese. It was only later that it evolved into the Japanese we know today. Hence, there are so many similarities between Kanji and Chinese, the writing and pronounciation. This hybrid of language, to me, is very interesting..
By the way, I just wanna tell the whole world... I graduated today! haha
-vIt- I am a history and culture freak.. so what attracted me most is the culture aspect, though i am slowly moving into the pop culture now.. like j-dorama etc. haha. Of course, cute guys is another good reason to like Japan.
cookielmy
07-10-2006, 01:24 PM
I thought westerners are the one who dislike number 13? Not sure what's the reason though.
There some houses around my area doesn't have number 4 too. They address it as 3b instead
Pet - You really know alot about such history things eh. Woots, I didn't know that hiragana was used by women only. That's really kinda cool.
It's really time for me to buy some history books about Japan ^^
-vIt-
07-11-2006, 12:54 AM
pam- hehe, was i too obvious there? :shy:
petricia - congrats on graduating! Finally out of school work
i don't know any history on Japan, because i focus more of the modern times..
i think modern japan is one of the coolest country.. especially because of places like harajuku and shibuya :brows: lol
anyway, those facts are really interesting!

Histories is nice when we're learning how people came out with so many new things and how they can build a community among them..
Though, I don't like the history I'm learning in school :bigyuck:

Omedetou Pet which faculty did you graduate from anyway, Japanese history ?! I also love to study history but I don't like that we have to remember everything ; year, month, date, name, place, etc. It is too much for me, I can't remember it XD
moonie >> you are japan-crazy, you know lol history is still history and there is also others countries history to learn right
cookielmy
07-11-2006, 02:03 PM
Yes of course history is history. But when is history about Japan, it isn't boring history. It's something interesting and exciting to know about Japanese during olden times.
Oh well, I've always been a Japan-crazy. Good thing I hope ^^

07-11-2006, 07:36 PM
Thanks for all the congrats!
Though I wished that I had decided to continue with Honours instead... A bunch of friends of mine asked why didn't I... I hate to embarrass myself by telling them that I need to ace each and every one of my modules to get a 2nd lower honours, hence i decided to graduate..
Pam: haha... I would love to argue on the 'history is history' part but i'll probably be writing a 3000 word post if i did that. In short, History is everywhere in our daily lives, just that we didn't realise that. Anyway, I graduated from the Faculty of Arts, majoring in History.
However, I understand why many people think that way, I used to think that way too. Coz secondary school or high school history is simply boring~~~~~~. I was seldom awake in my own history classes back then. One good thing about History at university level is... I don't have to remember exact dates. The names of places and people are already causing a lot of anxiety in me during classes. Believe me, if i need to remember exact dates as well, I'll probably be failing all my modules. haha...
moonie: what sorts of history you are doing in school? I am just curious. By the way, you don't have to buy a book on Japan's history. If I am not wrong, wikiepdia is not a bad source for general knowledge of that.
yukiko: It's okay... You don't have to know it if you have no interest. However, I feel that Japan is one of the countries in Asian whose cultures and beliefs are closely related to its history.
Anyway, about numbers... Why are Asians uptight about the no. 13? I can understand the number 4 but why no.13?
yukiko
07-12-2006, 09:21 AM
maybe it's for japanese only. because most of their culture is westernised. that's only 1 reason i can think of. ^^
my history is really bad. it's not that i dont like it. i just cant remember any. i even dont remember the dynasty in japan. all i now is tokugawa, heisei what else? mm i retake my history class this term, wish i can do better. :p
cookielmy
07-12-2006, 09:36 AM
Basically my History I'm learn in school now is about how Malaysia became an independent country, about how politics build, about Nabi Muhammad came about and many others, really boring topics.
It's making me sleep all the time.
The names are hard to memorise, the place and the date especially. Maybe because I have no interest in learning history about Malaysia. If you were to give me a history book on Japan, I'll read it without people forcing me to ^^
Prefer getting a book because I can take along with me wherever I go, especially to school. To keep me awake or entertain when I'm bored.
Woots, so you major in History huh. So what are you planning to do after graduating eh? History teacher maybe?
pamujung
07-12-2006, 11:59 AM
Pet >> so that history in university level sounds interesting to me, I hate to remember every single detail, that's crazy
hmm.. I believe that china is also the country that their culture is not westernised :?
petricia
07-13-2006, 08:04 AM
Yukiko: Hmmm.. In fact, I feel that Japanese culture is very Asian. Of course they all seem very westernized with their technology etc. but they still have a lot of other asian elements that seemed to have disappeared from Chinese culture. For example we still need to know the honorific (in some J-dorama, they seemed quite prominent too) while in Chinese, we don't use it that much. And the holidays related to culture are also quite a lot, like the growing up ceremony which is a national holiday, i think. By the way, I can only remember the Tokugawa and Meiji dynasties only... haha... even worse. I need to refresh. After all, if you don't use it, they are just junk material that can be deleted off your brain to create more space.
Pam: Depends on which part of China bah... I think a lot changed after the Cultural Revolution (ended in 1970s) and then all the changes they are still making changed the thinking of alot of people. I'll wait and see now.. haha..
moonie: Yup... Currently applying to the local teaching institute, still waiting for their reply. And I totally understand why you don't like the history you are doing now. As a Singaporean, I dun really like to know about our 'nation-building' history too. It is just too ... 2 dimensional.. flat... nothing interesting at all. Esp. SEAsian history is really compact and messy.
How about Southeast Asian countries, considering some of us are from the region, are you all scare about the no. 13? My friends and I usually jsut use it to make fun or tease each other of our bad luck at times... Not seriously scare of it, though I've heard of ghost stories in Singapore regarding no. 13.
midori
07-13-2006, 10:58 AM
As for China being westerenized, I guess you'll just have to look at where you're talking about.. like metropolitan China or rural China. Japan is very westernized in major cities but it still maintains traditions throughout.
pamujung
07-13-2006, 11:16 AM
Pet >> I'm not scared of no. 13 like you we are teasing and make fun about it but nothing serious. Can say we was westerenized ?! Like when we recieve christian holiday ig. x'mas ^^"
hmm when is that we start talking like we are prof. and talk about deep thought on history, we are no soon going to talk about world history  side note, I got an A for that subject hehe

i've been trying to read and understand the previous posts..
i think i got it  ....
i think Japan is really Asian though, they don't even dress like Westerns and they still celebrate traditional festivals etc.
Not seriously scare of it, though I've heard of ghost stories in Singapore regarding no. 13.
why is it number 13? I knew 13 has something to do with ghosts..

Woots, got A for History subject? You're really good in memorising huh. People calls me old woman in class so I doubt I can score an A ;p
Pet - It's waaay too boring. Hates it when comes to names. It's long and one of a kind.
I've read alot about Singapore ghost stories too, but haven't come across the story of number 13 though.

im not scare of 13. my birthday is on 13. some people said that 13 can give you bad luck, but i dont care. everybody has a good and bad luck, dont they? and i dont think that my life is so unlucky. im happy enough for my life. nothing really bad happened. and i think im so lucky. i even love the 13 =P
cookielmy
07-19-2006, 06:17 AM
All these unlucky numbers are create by us. So to believe it or not, is depends on individuals. I don't really believe it myself, I don't think a number can bring me bad luck.
Woots, my school's student exchange student is coming next week. I can't wait for her arrival..
I'm shy to talk to her in Japanese as my pronunciation really suck and my vocabs aren't good enough.. *runs and hides*

yukiko
07-24-2006, 05:27 AM
if you dont want to learn it gramatically, the only way you can do speak japanese is by going to the country.
anyway, the grammar is the main point to know if you want to be able to speak japanese.

I agree with Yukiko with this. Grammer is important in speaking the language. Just a wrong usage of a particle will send the listener a different intention, which causes misunderstandings. :shy: Been there; try it. So learn the grammer, if not, go to Japan and stay, though I would say the latter is more expensive in my opinion.

Pet - I wanna make good use of my Japanese language after learning it with all effort, don't wanna put it to waste. Friends and family were telling me that finding a job in Japan is quite good. Maybe you can try applying to work there?.. At the same time, can brush up our Japanese slang and meet more Japanese hotties :brows:
I'm really shy to speak in Japanese to my friends when they ask me to say something. Somehow it freaks me out everytime.
Even now, don't really dares to reply in Japanese
Yukiko - Is best to tell where's the mistake actually, so that we can correct ourselves and improve. That's what my Japanese teacher tells us everytime ^^
I don't have google talk either. But I do have msn, feel free to add me rubylmy@hotmail.com I'm very very friendly *evil laughs*
I'm still attending Japanese classes, but tend to forget everything after a week  Yes yes, I know, I'm old.

Don't worry, you can do it!
Talk to a kid? Where can I find a Japanese kid in Malaysia? What if the kid laughs at me too? :shy:
yukiko
07-30-2006, 04:11 AM
at least when facing the kid, we dare to talk to them (yeah even we also make a lot of mistakes) but the kid wont care your language gramatically. you can try it when you found a japanese kid. ^^
anyway, i just sign for my japanese history class. the class start on september. wish me luck. i cant pass it last term. T_T

after I almost got to go to Japan and then couldn't  It was like waving the most amazing experience in front of my face only to take it away!
awww, how come?
I sorta understand the feeling though. I was suppose to go to japan in oct when I take my trip to south korea. but that couldn't eventuate either, due to miscommunication from a travel agent. and that was after I had looked into hotels and tourist destinations I wanted to visit. ><
so who's going to work in japan? :?
I might be doing that next year. :worry:

Hey harms! Where have you been?.. >< Tes is here too :hugz:
Same thing here too. I almost got to go to Japan this year too but due to last minute work, everything was a failure.
I actually filled up the aplication form for a youth exchange programe that my school has. I knew about this programme 3 days before the dateline.. when I got the form, I didn't have the time to get a medical report in time and such
I'll make sure I get to go next year :)
Tes - Poorthing! So near yet so far huh >< Is really a big disappointment when such thing happens. It feels like bangingg your head to the wall.. Well, that's for me, not sure if you feel the same ;p
so who's going to work in japan?
I'm still young to be thinking of work. But I've thought about it though.. ^^
Wish you luck for next year.

Yukiko - A male lecturer age 20+? :brows: Don't miss out the chance.. you better grab him fast before others do.. Hehe.. just jk. Maybe then you can chat with him more often to improve your Japanese eh?
You should definitely go work in Japan if you have the chance. It's fun when you have a friend there.. it's like a long vacation
Anyway, I have a noob question here. How do we use totemo and taihen? Both is the same meaning but it seems that both has different usage in different sentences?
Ah! Just saw this thread. I'm going to Tokyo and Kyoto for a holiday in Oct! It'd be my first time there so I'm pretty excited. Anything that I MUST SEE or do? :wink2:
I have to add that accommodation is SOOOO expensive in Tokyo!! :cry

Hmm, I've never been there before but I've heard alot about Tokyo Disney Land
Nothing particular that you must do actually, just smile and enjoy your day  Are you planning to learn a couple of Japanese words or sentences before you go there?
yukiko

Anyway, I have a noob question here. How do we use totemo and taihen?
you know what cookie? you just gave me a brilliant idea for my final paper. yes, i've decided to pick it as my topic. because i never heard someone work on it.
and the question (in my opinion)
taihen is more formal. and the feeling is DEEPER
if you use Taihen, it seems you said it from the bottom of your heart.
and now, i have to find a japanese novel for my feedback. any recomendation? prefer the modern age novel.
ene i think you should go to tokyo disney land and universal studio. and the natural scenery, Mountain fuji a.k.a fujisan. some lake
and dont forget to try the Ryokan and Onsen
Ryokan is japanese traditional room with tatami and all woodie.
Onsen is "hot bath tub". try to find the natural one.
i ever heard that there's one onsen is really cool. even it's in winter, the onsen still HOT. around the onsen is a lake/river.
cookielmy
08-30-2006, 01:08 PM
yukiko - What idea did I gave you that made you decide to pick as your title
So does that mean if I'm saying 'very cold' in a casual way, it would be; 'totemo samui'?
Whoa, a Japanese novel? Well, I definitely can't help you because I've never read them. How's like? Does it have deeep words? I don't think my level of Japanese can manage a Japanese novel
Onsen is very very hot, if I'm not wrong. How can we put ourselves inside? It's like being cooked in a boiling water.. *runs*
yukiko
08-31-2006, 04:32 AM
cookie, i wanna study the different between 大変(taihen) dan とても(totemo). but i must have a book or article for me to read, and find the sentences contain that two words, then i have to analyze it. is there any different? we'll find out later.
I also dont think i can understand all the story. but my lecturer dont allow me to read the translated version. i must read a JAPANESE novel. because most of my friends use the old time novel, i think i must make a difference, that's why i choose modern age novel. something not to hard to understand, a novel about life, love, friendship. not the samurai story, etc.
what kind of final paper do you have to do in your university? i must make one like an essay. minimal 50 pages or more. i have to analyze the topic i pick, then make a presentation (in Japanese) in front of 3 lectures. one is the native speaker. so i have answer her question only in japanese, but i have 2 non-native speaker.
btw, おめでとう ございます cookie finally you are officially a cloud's surfers.

ooh Eney is going to Japan <3 Yes I would recommend you to visit Disneyland, Tokyo tower, Mt. Fuji, Hamaguchi lake, and Temple Asakasa ^^ But if you are going to Osaka too, then you must go to Universal Studio Japan. Are you going alone ?
Onsen is very very hot, if I'm not wrong. How can we put ourselves inside? It's like being cooked in a boiling water.. *runs*Yeh it likes a boiled water. I couldn't put myself directly into the water. But once you are in it, it isn't that hot. You will comfortable and don't want to get yourself out lol
I heard 'ichi ritoru no namida' is a really sad drama T-T I dare not to watch it.

If I were to read Japanese novels, I would go for friends and love type. I don't like those warrior things here and there.. so boooring!
*drops jaw* 50 pages of essay! >< Goosh, that's alot to write, now in school, I write my essay only like 600 words and I'm already struggling. What a biggie differences..
ichi ritoru no namida. [one litre of tears]...
Ah, I heard about this alot. But from the title of the drama, makes me run away. One litre of tears is scary..
Pam - From the title, I knew it was a crying-drama. That's why I didn't downlaod it.. :D I'm scared I'll finish all the tissues at home ;p
deeyan
09-13-2006, 07:52 AM

deeyan - Haha.. the way you said it made me laugh! :lolabove:.. I'm really really afraid of crying shows, I wouldn't want my eye to be swollen after watching a drama. ><
A gallon is really really alot.. by that time, using tissues aren't enough huh. We need towels!
What's the story about that made you cry so much?
By the way, you know Japanese language too? That's cool.. how long have you been studying Japanese language?..
deeyan
09-13-2006, 08:51 PM
hahaha yea i guess so..we need towels! the show is quite worth the swollen eyes ba( unless it is super bad swell) lols..
hmm..its based on a true story on this girl called aya..and she suffered from this funny disease (which i forgot the name ! lols) and its incurable..the disease attack her spinal cord and some part of her brain that controls her blance and movement (i think) yah so...the story is about how she fought to live and stuff..so touching T_T and her real diary is published in japan only ( again,i think) .=D
hmm..yea know some basic grammar hiragana katakana but very limited vocabs and kanji..hahaha...i only learnt it like last summer?which is..ard 2 or 3 months..heehee..

ene is going to Japan? Take me with you!!
A must go is of course the shopping in Japan~ shibuya etc.
Have fun!
anyway, as deeyan said, 1 litre of tears is SO touching! About this very strong girl aya, and had the disease -> spinocerebellar degeneration
The cerebellum of the brain deteriorrates and Aya can't walk, speak, write or eat. She was told to write a diary so that it helps the doctor -> see if she is getting worse [her writing is gradually getting bigger and messier] and her feelings.
It's a really touching drama! And the book is also available in Chinese - cas I have the chinese copy.
cookielmy
09-14-2006, 02:15 AM
This is indeed a touching story. It's really really sad to hear that it's a real story. Does anyone know that they have the diary in English?.. I really wanna have read it.. rather than watching. Lets hope I won't cry so much by reading it. Hm, do you think I can manage the Japanese version? ><
If I were this girl, I would rather ask the doctor to end my life there and then and let me go in peace instead of suffering through all these difficulties.
So Aya died in the end?..
petricia
09-14-2006, 03:31 AM
[spoilers] yup she did. But she put up a good fight. [end of spoilers]
According to my friend, she said it was a pretty easy read because it was written by a 14 year old girl (Aya). It is basically a published version of her diary. There are some adaptations and changes made to the drama (by Aya's mum) so... there is a slight difference.
I would say... This drama is worth the gallons of tears you will shed. At least for me... I can't stop my tears from flowing since the 4th ep i think.
Ene: I would suggest Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto. It is just simply magnificent! I don't know much about other places as my friends and I only spent a day in Kyoto and we spent it in 2 temples.. haha. Oh Ya! if you are really going to the temple, take note of the various shops along the way. There are amazing little omiyage that you can bring home and fantastic food as well.

fuh 4 week more to make my presentation about the novel i read, and i have to analyze it... OH NO. school is HARD. i still havent decide which novel i have to read, and what topic i should analyze. maybe i should ask my lecture if she has a copy of ichi ritoru no namida.
and still have tourism task to make a draft for my tour package. including, the transportation, destination, hotel, where to go, bla bla bla.. and in future, we HAVE TO act as a tour guide in the class. i have sick to talking in front of the peoples, especially if i have to act. oh no... i prefer to make a presentation.

How's everyone? I am find currently, and watching a luxury train ride from Ueno to Hokkaido... It definitely looked fun.... Anyone seen anything like that before? or been on something like that?

Yo! Pet sou ne. hisashiburi. I think we run out of what to talk about japan lol
maa I want to go to Hokkaido, the pink moss garden looks so beautiful in the poster ^^ but I have no idea about that luxury train. I once took the speed train(forgot what it's called) from Osaka to Tokyo, just only 20 minutes. I hadn't finished my bento yet haha
i remember that someone ever asked when to use *mo ii desu* and *kamaimasen*.I don't remember we have talked about it  but I am finding it now.

Cookie is here. Have been reading the posts, but didn't know what to reply
Yes yes Pet, ramen is the best! Yum yum.. last time I went to the food court and ordered spicy ramen, oishii! *drools*
Talking about sushi and wasabi now makes me feel hungry ><"
Speaking of ramen, has anyone tried Yamachan's Pork flavor ramen? It's a semi-instant noodle ramen just about as good as the ramen sold in stores!
