hahaha how wonderful! We get to continue our lovely chats about colleges.
-___-
And actually, college apps are not fun at all. I think I'm almost done. Just need two more applications to do and I'll be set. I've been recycling essays like you wouldn't believe. My friend and I are in this competition to see who can reuse their essay the most times and I think she's beating me out. I don't think she's written one new essay other than the one she's been using on all her applications.
Yeah, they are not at all fun...I've reused my essays so much too!! There's like a main essay that I use for pretty much every college, and then there's this "template" essay that I use for questions like "why did you use this major" or "why did you choose this college" BLAH
The only thing I'm worried about is... I finished most of my apps really early and submitted them right away, but the more I think about it, the more I want to include additional stuff in the "additional info" portion of the application. Do you guys think I should? It'd be just a more complete resume of my extra-curriculars since the section in Common App didn't really give me enough room to list all that I've done. TT
Oh, I DEFINITELY know what you mean. THere's BARELY any room in the common app to list all the leadership positions and stuff, so I also put additional activities in the additional info part. But then, if you've already submitted the apps, I don't think you can change them...
You know what? I think some college admissions boards are crazy....
ONe of my amazing friends got deferred from Yale -
4.0 GPA
2400 SAT
FBLA state pres
Red Cross Exec board
Red Cross president
Varsity cheer
etc etc... :glug: how could they defer her?
spork
12-24-2005, 09:37 AM
maybe they don't like cheerleaders? XD
Don't high end colleges like Ivy Leagues conduct interviews of applicants? I know a couple friends had interviews for Yale and Harvard and stuff.
kewlpiggy88
12-24-2005, 08:01 PM
aiyah those yale deferral stats are scary. hey klarence, does the fbla state pres go to lynbrook?
klarence
12-28-2005, 05:51 AM
yup, she's from lynbrook. Are you in FBLA?
Anyway...I heard that only 6 ppl in the Bay Area got accepted into Yale..
kewlpiggy88
12-28-2005, 09:35 AM
holy crapperz, only SIX! that is really crazy. i think everyone who got applied to yale got deferred or rejected. yeup, i'm in FBLA. gah, FBLA state pres is smart AND pretty (i met her at a FBLA leadership thingy). she probably thought i was a lil crazy cuz i was asking her about doing a career shadowing thing together cuz the person at the place we want to do it at told me to ask to do it w/ lynbrook. and she was like all confused and like, "i think that's with the school, not FBLA." it was embarrassing cuz i all introduced myself and yeahhhhhhhhhh.
sigh, i'm up against THESE type of ppl...
did anyone do anything over the break? i want to go skiing! i haven't gone in 5 years. ooh has anybody tried the new restaurant in cupertino village? it's like shanghai-style and sells xiao long bao. it's still going through some typical new restaurant woes like understaffing and confused waiters, but i thought their xiao long bao was pretty good. OH and the teppanyak restaurant at fobville reopened too! it just has a new name, but inside is basically the same.

then again, some people get into all the ivy leagues and get rejected by Stanford. I honestly hav eno idea what they're looking for
spork
12-28-2005, 10:24 AM
only the people who get into the schools now what they're looking for specifically...like you start to notice what kind of people are schools like just by seeing what your fellow students are like, personality-wise and accomplishment-wise XD and of course by then it's too late.
It's cool quadshock :) At least you had a good enough chance that you decided to apply
My application wouldn't have stayed away from the shredder for very long >_>

big white thing? haha how creepy. but yah, speaking of trash bins.. i told my brother to take the trash can in yesterday but being the lazy bum that he is he refused to do it, well i didnt wanna take it in cuz i was trying to make a point. so this morning as i back out the car to drive him to school i notcie the trashcan's missing, my first thot was someone stole it, but then my brother points out the window. it had flown like a block and a half down the street. and that thing is ginormous, i have no idea how it happened. *sigh* i had to go drag it all the way back up and it was all wet and dirty. ick:oops:

YES I WON 10 bucks off that game. Even though i'm a californian, i dont like USC just cause. but YES. USC shouldnt went at the blitz, and freakin R. Bush fumbled the ball, which prob led to their defeat. soo awesome, and the long-horns only had about 3 good players too, vince young, the rushing, and the wide reciever (white boy). soo sweet, texans stoped their 34 wining streak.

So I am not a USC fan. But I HATE HATE Texas 'cause Texan teams have a record of beating all my favorite teams in games for the past few years. And that USC is a Pac-10 team and since Pac-10 is always so underrated...well, I thought it'd be our time to shine =[
And with 2006...that means that COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE (& rejection) letters for regular admit should be coming in soon. haha. good luck you guys! :]
So the weather in Nor-cal SUCKED?! I came home from Illinois hoping for some sun! haha. All I got was half sun-half rain. fun.

hint hint: don't apply for Davis :( we get the worst breaks ever. Spring break is an amazing total of two days and a weekend...so that's four days...so it's just like thanksgiving break :( Even worse, for you science-y folks, Chemistry is a measley 5 units for a three hour lab, three hour lecture and one hour discussion course. Down in San Diego and LA, lab is a separate class with like, 4-5 units or something, and lecture is 4-5 units. Laaaaaaaaaame. stay away from Davis :(
edit: welllll...everyone's probably applied to davis anyway...just don't accept :/

college is ok i guess? XD The great thing about being a freshman in dorms is that I can come back to my room in between classes and just chill. Next year I'll have an apartment so I may or may not be on campus all day depending on how far my apartment is and how easy it is to get back to it.
Having night classes is a downer though -_- It means that unless I do some homework during the day when I have like, a 5 hour break between my class I'll end up wasting a whole day XD

What i dont like is the competition.. i guess it depends on your major. but like all molecular and cell biology students here are pre-med and its crazy how competitive ppl are.

Too bad Jay doesn't read english, so he can't really read some of the "happy bday" wishes.
But then again even if he could read english I don't think he has the time haha XD.
Anyway sorry but I need to rant.
I got my finals grades back. Ok I know I didn't study that much so I wasn't expecting a perfect, but I totally flunked all my finals.
I got a 99 out of 150 on my CALC AP final
I got a 222 out of 332 on my History final
I got a 70 out of 100 on my Spanish 4 AP Final
I got a 163 out of 205 on my Bio AP Final
The only decent grade on my finals are for English 3 Honors on which I got a 90.8% on the finals. My parents are going to kill me when they see my report card. I dropped from an 93.5% to a 89.1% in Math...so I have a b in that class and I dropped from a 95.7% to a 90.2% for Spanish (our cutoff for A is 91%) and so I got a b in that class also. DAMN.
that really sucks. And especially because I'm so close to the roundups.
Luckily I managed to still get an A in history becuase I had a high enough A to cushion my downfall. And for bio I managed to get a 90.0% despite my finals
But my parents are so going to kill me, I am so dissapointed.

Three days after they grade it, i got 69% :D Thankfully, the class average is 62%, so as long as I stay above the average, and as long as the average is super low, I'm ok....but still...four days and all i got was a D

singerchick: ur school doesn't do +/-? junior year was a biotch for me too. i ended up dropping AP Chem because it was so horrible. yeah and i kinda slacked off this year tooo, but my rant, white out in case people are bored of all the grade talk...
i'm so mad about my stats grade. the teacher has a weird-ass grading scale that's based out of 12. 12 = A+, 11 = A, etc. i dunno how to explain it, but basically i was so close to the next level, but it's so hard to go to the next level in regards to how his grading is done. basically ppl who did lots worse on tests have the same grade as me. grr. ARGH and my friend in lit, we both had low B's but she ended up getting an A-. i already calculated, and even if she beat the curve on the final, there's no way she could have gotten an A-. and the worst thing is that she's totally lying about her grades when i always have to comfort her. whenever i'm like, "aw crap" about my grades, she always goes "don't even TALK to me about it. i did SO much worse than you." it's so annoying to have to be all comforting to someone who actually doesn't need any comforting.

Sadly no our school doesn't. So I'm stuck with the same B as someone that has 80.1% in the class. O well.
I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Yeah I really get annoyed when teachers have weird grading scales and then there are the teachers taht are really hard and really easy. There are 2 CALC teachers at my school one's really easy and everyone got an A in that class. The teacher gives really easy tests and she grades really easy because she is new. Whereas there is another teacher that's been teaching for 25 years and grows more anal by the year. And...guess what? I got stuck wtih the hard teacher.
So your friend didnt really get an A?
kewlpiggy88
02-02-2006, 03:51 AM
she DID, but a week before the final she had a B-. supposedly. and she told me she had a B+ after the final, but she told my other friend she got an A-. it's just the same thing happened freshman and junior year when i had to comfort her about her math grades and she ended up doing better than me. she just wants ppl to think her grade is lower so that ppl will comfort her and that no one can complain to her and rant and rave (cuz everyone loves ranting about their grades). it's so freaking annoying.
i've been on youtube constantly. ever since i watched "stairway to heaven" sophomore year, trying to find the links to download, i've been addicted to finding videos off the internet. it's so bad. argh. i seriously canNOT control my internet addiction. sigh.

spork~ thats okay... college is just like that.. especially the science classes, you just cant look at your grade based on straight scale. i was ecstatic about the C i got on one of my midterms in o-chem.. esp cuz the class avg was a 49%^^
Singerchick~wow, i cant believe the cutoff was a 91% for an A in your spanish class. thats just beyond wrong!! an A is a 90%. end of story. and if they're gonna change it it should be lowered, like 89.5%..
::sidenote:: i think it needs to stop raining. it was fun at first, holding my umbrella, taking long strolls thru campus, pretending to be all melodramatic as if i were in a korean drama (with a soudntrack playing on my ipod)... but now my feet are suffocating to death in shoes.. im from socal, i need my flipflops T.T

But really, maybe I oughta be glad I am above average =_= still, there's always those people who excel somehow. I HATE it when people are like that, but never have to really, really study for anything.
Singerchick
02-05-2006, 03:03 AM
Haha I was really motivated by my grades and so I'm writing a newspaper article on the A, A+, A- issue. I doubt anyone in school really cares, but haha it allows me to rant.
Our honor/AP classes don't go by a normal grading curves. In english a 93% + is an A and 83% + is a B. And ou teacher doesn't round, but the good thing is that that's the only class that I did decently on my finals so my grade didn't drop below a 93%. What sucks is that a lot of these policies are new becuase of open enrollment, so last year's students didn't have to face the wrath of crappy rounding.
Fajitapita: It's raining in Socal? Where I am it's just really humid Haha I remember last year around this time, it was major el nino. I like walking in the rain, it's so calming and especially when there's no one else on the streets and you get this sense of serenity. So how are all you fellow californians doing? Is it just the Southbay or is it really cold now? It wasn't even that cold in January and now it's Feb and it's getting cold. I blame these irregular weather patterns on global warming !! :P
Anyway random...I'm currently obessed with Grey's anatomy and Josh Groban. Last week's episode had me crying even if it wasn't really THAT sad. i think I'm just too emotional, I cried when I watched Finding Nemo. But come on, admit it, that movie was a bit tragic, well that's cuz I thought Nemo died. Which apparently is stupid of me because it's a DISNEY movie....
Josh Groban has the most angelic voice ever, I'm just really into the "voice" singers more than the "good looking, dancing" people. I never liked JT. BUt I was listening to his song and it moved me to tears. Wow dang..I cry a lot. But anyway that was the first song to move me to tears. I love josh because he has an awesome voice, same reason I used to love Clay. too bad he's kind of dissapeared now, he had such a pure perfect voice.
My Random rant will really revive this rad thread!

I live in the South Bay as in Southern California. Not like San Fran:)
I watched arrested development a bit but I kind of stopped. I've been watching the winter olympics, I'm such a loser, I would watch it to like 3 am anad not be able to wake up to go to school the next day. But dang is Apollo Anton Ohno f'ing yummy. But then I have a feeling my love for him will die out because that's what happens when I like people for their face. I mean Apollo is talented in speed skating and all but he's hot. ahha. I remember I used to love Keanu reeves..after the matrix but my interest for him dissapeared after awhile when he had nothing else but his face that tantilized my senses.
Anyway we had a culture thing at school and I remember last year at the Taiwan/China table, they only had a Jay Chou cd. I was like..ok that's really sad, so I wrote down the names of David Tao and Leehom on a piece of paper. hahaa sadly they didn't know who they were. .And this year they had a Leehom and David tao picture! The pictures weren't exactly drool-worthy, but w/e haha. And a stephanie sun CD, but of course it was still dominated by Jay chou CDS. But I'm not complaining, as long as other artists that deserve due credit get it as well. Oh they also had this picture of Jolin...but not AMEI
-_-. And another random note, I was walking past our school's chinese club and they were playing "hereos of the world" with Jin and Leehom ahhhh, that was ecstasy.
But ok, I am dying in the requirements of college, GPA, SAT, EXTRACURRICULAR, RECCOMENDATIONS, AWARDs, VOLUNTEERING, etc, etc. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I have like none, and I judgement day for me is only like half a year away. Now I've reading essays to help me improve my writing for college applications, and I just happened to come across Leekai Wangs which was pretty trippy.
Btw I was watching "super girls" or w/e, it's like a girl version of American idol in China. And wow a lot of the finalists have such awesome voices...(although I don't really dig the winner). It still amazes me how mediocore can make it when there is so much talent out there. I <33 Zhang Liang Ying, Hou Jie, and Ji Ming Jia. Or something along those lines.
I think I already mentioned this but I <33 Josh Groban and Clay aiken. hahah they can't dance or do much else but hell their voices are eargasmic.

OH MAN I love Grey's Anatomy!!!
I love Mcdreamy  XD
Grey's Anatomy is kinda like a cross between ER and Scrubs. It has people with crazy medical conditions and is about a group of interns and their residents/bosses. The main character Meredith falls in love with her boss, Dr Sheppard, whom they call Mcdreamy :P
fajita: just walk in and ask for an application :) Or ask to speak to the manager to talk about employment. Then turn it in with a resume.

i absolutely adoooooore that show. have you guys seen the clothes they designed for olympus fashion week? i actually really liked santino's clothes, even if he is a rude bastard. and both daniels are really nice guys - remember when crazy zulema was being mean to kara and daniel gave k a hug? and when the other daniel wouldn't sell out chloe and kara. hmm, maybe if i have a son i'll name him daniel...haha.

oing the jtown in L.A is pretty crap too. they used to have a least ONE little plaza you could shop in. last time i went to the plaza was like... 2 years ago??? and they have almost no shops. i think the cd shop there closed down. just a couple of random things and a market there.
you know if they expanded jtown (like ktown) and stick with selling japanese only goods, they would make SOO much money.
cuz where i live japanese stuff is marked up like mad but ppl still buy it. i used to read vivi religiously until everyone else in the world and their moms started to read it too and the price got marked up to nearly $12 a magazine!!! it only used to a few bucks more expensive than the price in japan, 400 yen.
seriously if both jtown n ktown started selling like popular goods from japan and korea respectively, business would be booming and not like a ghost town....

i didn't plan on getting a dress so early but then my friend and her mom were going to SF during winter break to this prom outlet place and asked if i wanted to come. all the dresses there were pretty cheap so i just got one. i know prom is supposed to be this big deal, but i don't really care all that much if i go or not. like it would be fun to go, but it wouldn't be the END OF THE WORLD (like missing jay's concert) if i didn't.
oh, and klarence - i hear some ppl put up signs and stuff to ask people out. like, "WILL YOU GO WITH ME?" spelled out, or a message in every period, something like that, but yeah, that's basically it. someone told me that at monta vista, valentine's day is like xmas - tons of gifts. or was that lynbrook?

I'm not really a huge fan of Jolin, I like some of her songs, but I don't know, I might go just for the experience, because the Las Vegas was really fun, so I might go just so I can scream and get hyper. But the thing is I've seen from Jolin's video clips that her concerts are more the type that you kind of have to be in the front to enjoy it because her concerts arn't exactly "musical" so it's not the type that is enjoyable if you saw just a tiny dot from far away. However, I'm iffy because I heard David Tao is coming to America sometime also...so I'm not sure if I would want to fork out $100+ dollars for Jolin's and not be able to go to David Tao's. I'm a huge David Tao fan. so yeah lol.

DAVID TAO is coming? omg! where did you hear from? i'll keep my eyes and ears alert, but argh, i dunno if my parents (esp my mom) will let me go to another one if it's soon. the other day, she said, "dad and i talked, and we agreed that if you go to the jolin concert, you can't go when jay comes." my dad comes home, we're eating dinner, and i ask him about the "agreement" he made with my mom, and he's like, "i never said that..." tsk tsk, my mom is so tricky tricky tricky.

Wow that's pretty awesome!!!
How many times did you take the SAT?
I got a 2290 the first time and I'm thinking of retaking it to raise it to hopefully (or my parents want me to) to a 2350. But I'm not sure if that's posbble. I don't have as many Ec's as you so i need to make up for it in like my grades. I played the flute, but I stopped so that kinda sucks LOL. I was wondering do college look down at you if your grade drops junior year? I had all straight A's until this year. Godamn. Yeah so I'm kind of worried :shy: especially because I heard you have to be like top 1% of your school to get into Berkely.
Btw how many volunteering hours did you have?
I know your a big Jolin Fan are you going to her concert?
kewlpiggy88
03-14-2006, 04:06 AM
singerchick: klarence only took it once, and ahhh! 2290 is so awesome already. imho, i really see no need to retake it. well, i guess it depends on where you want to go. according to what everyone believes, privates look more at how well-rounded one is (essays, ECs), whereas the UCs look at numbers more (it's less true for LA and Berk, though). also, it's not just the top 1% who get into berkeley. every year, 20-30 ppl from my school end up deciding to go there, so more people actually get in. don't you do newspaper? that's a pretty good extracurricular already. i REALLY don't recommend you going because sometimes it's more of a place to feel depressed about yourself, but this site can possibly help answer your college-related questions: www.collegeconfidential.com
as a sidenote, does your school have a website for your newspaper? maybe we can swap URLs and/or a hard copy (our website is never updated. we're actually trying to improve that. our advisor wants to create a special group dedicated to just the web site). i'm a newspaper junkie myself - we call ourselves the J-Crew and we live in the J-Room. hardy har har.

I don't think one is necessarily "better" than the other...just be sure to have depth in your activities...show your involvement in them through leadership positions, awards, etc. 2290 is great! wow good job :-)
Yeah, my grades started to drop starting junior as well.. but i dont think you need to be the top1% to get into Berkeley.
oh i have probably around 230 volunteer hrs in general, because a lot of my clubs revolve around community service (red cross, food for all, boy scouts, leukemia and lymphoma society).
lol probably not.. the tickets are so expensive! I'm going to be in Asia for a long time in the summer, so hopefully i'll be able to go to my first concert! :D
jenn: whoa that website has so much info! lol i kinda wish i heard about it earlier. it wouldve helped a lot in the entire process. oh yea, davis is up too! i cant check it though, because i dunno my account id and stuff...

yeah I remember 2 years ago this guy at our school got rejected from UCLA but got into Cal-tech. I thnk it's becaue UC's go for more "well-rounded" whereas Cal-tech is more focued on science. This guy didn't do to well in other subjects but excelled in science and math and was on natioanl olympiad Etc.
hmm... i dunno why, it remind me of this story. it happened like 5 years ago, a guy from highschool near where i lived. he got accepted to Harvard but then rejected them and went to Sacramento State....
oh yeah, Wal-Mart's about to open its 2,000th Supercenter, and it'll celebrate the momentous occasion with a free concert featuring Ryan Cabrera. He'll perform March 18 in the parking lot of said store — located in Beaumont, California. The show is open to the public and starts at 4 p.m. ...

college acapella groups = the bomb! i just went to an acapella competition at stanford - they're all so good. and can i just say that guys w/ english accents are SO HOT? omg. i saw a group of tall, lanky english boys sing and i just about died.
okay okay, slight exaggeration, but i totally want to study abroad in england now. who cares if the weather's dreary and they eat weird/unhealthy food like shepherd's pie and fish&chips? if that's what's making the men HOT, then so be it!

Yeah, they're really great! I saw one at USC when I visited there, and they were sooo good.
Anyway, I was rejected by MIT (no surprise). I only know 3 ppl that got in. A senior female, a junior, and someone from kewlpiggy's school. lol.
got into ucsd and nyu though...so now i have to wait for 7 more colleges. i heard that carnegie mellon sent some letters out today though. ahhh i hate waiting for all the colleges to notify me. why can't they just all release the decisions the same day??
jenn: have you heard from other colleges yet?

NYU IS OUT?! i thought they were coming out at the end of march!
klarence: don't worry about MIT. 3 guys at our school who are like TOP NOTCH. like SO SO SMART. did not get in. and 1 of them has a brother that goes there, too. but 2 girls from our school got in!

oh, i got a letter from NYU (not exactly the acceptance package)..i guess it can be considered a likely letter. and according to collegeconfidential.com (which you got me addicted to =P), its pretty much an acceptance?
D and L are the girls from your school, right? soo cool. i heard D got like a half-tuition scholarship too (we're family friends). its weird how so many more girls around here are getting accepted.. my guy friends who were REALLY smart (one got into caltech early, other got into yale early) didnt get into MIT either. i think its easier for girls to get into MIT though. i saw last yrs stats, and ~7000 guys applied while ~2000 girls applied, and they still accepted pretty much and equal amount of guys and girls.
oh and i got into cmu!! id probably go to berkeley instead though...

Congrats Klarence! Your really smart :)
Wait...how does a junior get into like MIT?
Anyway yeah this guy at my school who's like county acadec champion got rejected by MIT. But he got into Cal-tech, so I guess it isnt' that bad.
So far I know of two people from my school, both are girls, that got into Stanford early. But some really weird people got into UCLA and a lot people were pissed. But I guess UCLA likes to balance things out so they accept some "so-so" people.

yeah, LA was very strange this year. like ppl who, imho, are stronger than other ppl who got in didn't.
klar: ooh, okay. i got a letter too but i have to make sure first, otherwise i feel like i'm jinxing things. congrats on CMU (carnegie right?) my friend got in too and on the letter it was something about 'this is the fat letter.' i thought that was pretty funny! yeah, all the guys who got rejected at MIT got in at caltech. and WOW, D got a scholarship? she should totally go there. she got D at harvard tho, so maybe she wants to wait. she's so smart tho...

haha jinxing things... yeah, CMU = carnegie mellon. lol it says "OFFICIAL FAT LETTER" on the envelope. =P actually D got financial aid, not a scholarship. my dad was mistaken. YEah, her top choice is Harvard...which will be out tomorrow! ugh....5 more schools to hear from. JUST ONE and i'll be happy!
I got into Northwestern today though!!!! my first reach school!!! :D i didnt know it was ranked #12 in the nation.. pretty good

congrats klarence - finally the cali thread has been livening up. so financial aid is just from like...the government right? and how did USC go? 4 people that i know of got the scholarship. i haven't heard from the other ppl who qualified for the scholarship though. do you want to go to northwestern?
and congrats again on northwestern! the remainder of this week and next week are going to be so nervewracking (and hell-ish because it's the week before spring break and teachers just LOVE to cram) cuz all the schools are coming out.
i'm so mad that i applied to a ton of reach schools. like seriously reach. aiyah.

lol yesterday i was considering to go to northwestern, but now im not sure. because I GOT INTO CORNELL AND UPENN!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so happy right now, even though i got rejected from yale (i predicted that =P). i want to go visit them during break.
and harvard STILL hasnt sent me an email.. i really doubt i'll get accepted by harvard or stanford though, so that's ok. :D

HAha..yeah anyone can graduate early. I knew someone who graduated after 10th. BUt graduating early and getting into MIT is a WHOLE diff story. Congrats on Northwestern. Yeah it came out today right? All the seniors on Board for Interact and Newspaper that applied for NW got in and they were all celebrating today. And this guy who got into John Hopkins and Swathmore was like on the verge of tears. Anyway I think someone from my school applied to williams. WOnder if they got in.

Well almost all the decisions are out. and wow I'm surprised 7/8 students got into stanford this year, including the early decision folks, that's a lot considering we usually get 3-4 max.

Yeah someone from our school got into Wharton and she was screaming with Joy. Haha but it wasn't really a surprise considering how frikin smart she was.
I mean her stats. :excited:
4.64 GPA
500+ Volunteer Hours
790 Chem SAT II
800 MATH IIC
750 SPANISH SAT II
730 Physics SAT II
780 History SAT II
2200 SAT I
5 SPANISH 4 AP
5 CALC AB AP
5 CHEM AP
5 PHYSICS AP
5 PSYCOLOGY AP
5 AP USH
god it's so depressing when you see such smart people. I was asking her what her stats were and wow I just was totally blown away.
Anyway so while everyone was enjoying JOlin's concert yesterday I took my AP practice tests, it was around 4 hours per test. Yeah not very much fun.
I was extremely depressed about my BIOAP score. I BARELY BARELY made a 4, I was like 3 points away from the cutoff to a 3. For Spanish I kind of expected a 3 because I suck in that class. a three was a 45 and I made a 53. I'm hoping to bring it up a few points and get a 4. Calc was the only happy score I got. WEll I need to STUDY STUDY STUDY!!!! Ye

ahhh, jolin's concert was OKAY. it was less than TWO HOURS! and the crowd was pretty dead. it was probably 85% full. i dunno, she only wore 4 outfits and seriously, it ppl paid THAT much $$$ and she flew all the way over here, you'd think she'd sing for at least 2+ hours. i mean, jay's concerts are usually like 2.5 hours.

Dude why are all these asian star's concerts sooo short in AMERICA?
Leehom's concert was only like <2 hours also. It was actually longer but his guest took up 1/3 of the time. That made me really sad. He had like only 3 outfit changes. It sucks though because people flew in from all over also. But then Leehom had a flight at 6am the next day back to taiwan because his new album was coming out and his singing was excellent and his interaction with his fans was beyond ADORABLE so I forgave him hahaha. But he kind of favored the left side more. But his piano was on the right so that was pretty ok. Leehom's concert was more "musical" and less visual. He played a lot of instruments but didn't do much dancing, but his voice was flawless. From the youtube clips I saw, Jolin had more dancing and stuff right?
Did anyone take a picture of Jolin's venue? How big was it?
But Jay's concert i think in 2002 in LV was the only full full length concert I went to.
Didn't Jolin's fans kind of get worked up at the end when Xiao Zhu Came out?
amei's having one in LV!!! I might go. I absulutely LOVE HER VOICE.
But for some reason, although the Jay one I went to was longer, I enjoyed Leehom's one more. Despite it being short, he always had me screaming. haha maybe because I'm border pshycotic when it comes to Leehom. But for what it's worth musically, those 1.5 hours gave me some of the best music I've heard, especially because the songs were rearranged and Leehom likes to add adlibs. :D

Ok so we were going over College entrance essays in school today. Wow and some people just drew pictures. lol that was pretty cool.
So I came home and I was on google searching for college essays and wow look who's I found? It's a small world.
My name is Lee-kai Matthew Wang, and I am an academic. To someone who doesn’t know me, that may be all I am: a name, an entry on the honor roll, or a code number on an application. But being reduced to a statistic does justice to no one, and I am no exception. I have my own merits, my own ideals, and my own quirks that keep me from blending into the background. I refuse to be tossed nonchalantly into some arbitrary category like mail sorted by a disinterested laborer.
My entire life I have striven to learn as much as I could, continuously thirsting for more. I am interested in everything, being fortunate enough to have had as mentors two older brothers, Lee-hom, 26, and Leo, 28. Lee-hom, a musician, inspired my love of music. Before he left home for college, he used to play his guitar and sing for me, instilling in me a deep appreciation for the art. I started playing the violin when I was 5, and I have studied piano since I was six. I also play the drums and love singing. I have sung and danced in my school's show choir as well as productions of "South Pacific", "Bye Bye Birdie", "West Side Story," and "Carousel." I have studied piano for over eleven years and play drums in a band called Sploosh.
Leo, my eldest brother, is responsible for my more scholarly proclivities. He is currently studying for his M.D./Ph.D. in immunology. His breadth and depth of knowledge have always impressed everyone in my family, and I have always admired him, hoping that one day my own erudition might rival his. My academic achievements began with language. I learned my alphabet at 18 months, and since then I have picked up French, Spanish, and Latin, in addition to Chinese and English. I have also excelled in mathematics from an early age, earning the second highest math score in New York State on the Johns Hopkins University Talent Search in seventh grade. I have been the captain of my school’s math team since freshman year and now I am coaching the MathCounts team at the middle school. Having actively participated in many mathematical competitions, last year I became the only student from my school ever to qualify to take the USA Mathematical Olympiad. I was also the First Vice-President of the New York State Junior Classical League, and I have won over forty awards at regional Latin competitions, including the "Mens sana in corpore san" award for highest overall achievement at the 2001 New York State Latin Convention.
I am now applying by early application to Harvard College. I plan to study biochemistry because I want to do cancer research. So many people I love have suffered from cancer in the past few years and at this point I want to offer whatever I can to the fight against it. I also intend to teach, for nothing is more valuable than to have the opportunity to impart unto others one’s own knowledge. Besides my academic pursuits I plan to play on the frisbee team as well as fence.
Great, you say, so you’re at least as talented as the next applicant whose self-gratifying essay I have to read. But I persist: I am different. What sets me apart from other students?
I am unique because I do not allow myself to be inhibited by regulation. Without doubt rules are necessary, but I am a firm believer that once the rules are mastered and their motives understood it is often proficuous to break them. I am in constant pursuit of mastery over the rules; what is more, I am not afraid to leave them behind.
When the words of prose become unfettered we call it poetry; when we free language of mechanical concerns we achieve fluency. When the notes of a musical composition have been learned we forsake accuracy in favor of expression. It is my goal to attain that level of understanding in everything I do. This is what sets me apart: the quest for intellectual freedom from pedantry.
He currently attends MIT but DAMN

anyhoo, as for colleges, i decided on berkeley. the only private i got into was NYU, and seeing all those beautiful pamphlets and hat that they sent me, it was kinda sad when i had to say byebye to all that luxury for 'ghetto' cal. but no matter, it's close to home!
as for jolin's concert, i have pics/video but it's on my sis' camera, and she uses a diff cam for me so the uploading equipment is diff. she's too lazy to upload because her computer doesn't have memory or something. i dunno, it'll eventually get uploaded tho...haha. it was actually a pretty small arena, so anywhere you sat, the view was pretty good.

Yeah, I used to live in NYC. I lived there for close to 7 years.
And I really like it there, I like the tempo of things. It seems so much more exciting and faster paced than Southern Cali. I mean Southern Cali is nice and mellow, it's a good place to "chill" But I like excitement more, so I really want to return to NYC.
I went to Chinese school at Columbia also. But I kind of dropped out in like 2nd grade. But then I remember playing in the Columbian courtyards and trying to catch fireflys.

My dad used to go to Columbia, and he went to grad school there also. So we SPENT A LOT of time at Columbia. LOL. But yeah we lived on 111th street. I lived in the city. Not like the suburbs like Rochester or Queens.
I remember there were a lot of old Chinese people that used hang out at the park. hah.
Actually southern Cali is boring but it's calm. Whereas in New York you could do stuff, where I live in Cali it's basically the same routine of hanging out at the beach with bonfires and sutff, playing at Pc Bang, playing pool, singing karoake, watching the movies, going to the mall etc etc. There's like nothing to GO AND SEE. Whereas in New York, just looking at the skyline is exciting. But in a way because the pace of life in Cali is slower it's more relaxing. So I'm thinking of returning here once I get married. haha, I'm such a loser, I have like my entire life planned out.
But woot APS are over. I failed them all, but they are OVER!!! I've been slacking off lately though now that APS are over, I've been just going out everyday LOL. Dude I think I'm already getting senior-itis.

05-13-2006, 09:12 PM
awww, maybe it's cuz no one you really like, like leehom, has come out with an album?
It's not that. I mean partly yeah a lot of the people I like haven't come out with stuff like David Tao. Also all the girl Chinese artists I like arn't coming out with stuff I like. For example Coco Lee, Elva, and Landy all have AWESOME voices, but they havn't come out with GOOD stuff for a LONG LONG TIME. But even if it's people I feel indifferent about like Jolin or Rainie Yang. I havn't been really impressed by their music. You know? It's like all the top selling artists like 5566 in Taiwan have 1-2 catchy songs and it just ends there there isn't any song that leaves an impact on me. I listened to Jolin's new album, it's catchy. Track 3 is a cute song. But it's not the type of album that I would look back on and be like wow that really affected me like say a Josh Groban song would have. Music to me has to be something more than just commercial.
I'm open to new suggestions, I've recently fallen in love with Gary Cao's voice, and I also like some of Nicky Lee's songs. But the sad part of it is a lot of the more popular artists I don't like.
Many of the songs seem so shallow. It's like the song would make a cool song for a cool music video but then it doesn't really go any deeper than that. Eh I don't know how to describe it. But my TASTE has changed over the years. But David Tao is coming out with an album soon, so yeah. But although Leehom's and Jay's music has opened me to Chinese music A LOT. I feel bad saying this, but there just isn't ENOUGH Leehom's and Davids and Jays in the industry to sustain my interest.
THat's why you must convert them, make them love chinese music =P haha i've actually introduced several friends to chinese music, and some really like it! just burn them a CD with what you think are the best songs or the most famous/popular.
Whoa, chinese school at Columbia sounds so cool!
No Chinese school at Columbia was retarded. It bored the crap out of me. And my best friend this white girl could speak Chinese fluently so she would always win all the competitions haha.
My friends don't like Chinese music period. haha.
I mean yeah they are songs here and there but overall they don't like Chinese music. Yeah they are Chinese, but extremely white-washed. They don't think Chinese artists can sing or dance except for a selected few.
I'm bombarded with American music everyday, and although A LOT of that mainstream sex music is crap, there is still a lot of music I like. Whereas for Chinese music, good music isn't thrown at me, I have to actually look for it. You know? It's like a lot of the music I download, I don't even like. I mean I still like Leehom. But I havn't heard really any music that's mentally stimulating and challenges me audio-lly for awhile.
Eh. Anyway I saw United 93 yesterday. I almost threw up because the video was so shaky and it got me dizzy, but boy that movie is powerful. I was crying at the end. It really leaves a deep impact. Has anyone seen it?

ooh, i want to watch that too...
but yeah, like none of my friends like asian music, for the same reasons you mentioned. they all think they sing bad, dance bad, etc.
it helps that jay has a really good lyricist who writes well. i can't understand a lot of it without the translations, bleh. and maybe there is deeper chinese music out there, but like you said, you have to find it.

In a sense as I've grown older I've realized that dancing doesn't necesarily make music good. But I used to have a misconception that chinese music was soooo un-evolved you know? But artist like Leehom, Jay David, JJ have turned me around, but like i mentioned earlier, there just arn't enough people like them. I mean they only each release an album a year or two.

okay i got led here by a google search for "lee kai wang" if you can believe it.
(by the way, he went from wanting to do biochemistry at harvard to doing math at MIT?!?! i guess MIT's just "up the road" from harvard, but man, that's a pretty big switch in majors!!)
Ohh berkeleY? I wanna go there. But I really really really wnat to go to Columbia
really???
columbia's great. i loved my time there....
haha, didn't know they had chinese classes though, for non-college students.
i did a class on asian civilizations [china, japan and korea] though (it's part of the core curriculum)
i quite liked it....i remember i did my final paper on Geisha, haha.
well let me know if you need freshman housing advice! :-)

zhy378,
yea, I'm not a freshman... I'm gonna be a senior this coming fall, but i've only been in davis for a year as I'm a transfer student.
You should try eating at old tea house too, their food is not bad... it's pretty enjoyable to hang out there at night... especially when they play Jay's songs...
hmmm... :hmm: other nice places in Davis... I can recommend you some nice places to eat... what do you like to eat? Have you ever been to Ciocolat? their dessert is amazing...

Old Teahouse is definitely the [only] place to go. I get my tapioca fix there during those long stretches when I don't go home where tapioca is a-plenty. I was surprised that such a place had three tvs in there. If you sit in a corner you can watch Jay from every angle hehe.

I'm always surprised that they have so many MV dvds to play...and that they can actually afford to buy three flatscreen tvs...But I guess since there's always so many people in the restaurant, they can easily pay for the cost of the tvs and dvds. It's hard to just go and sit in there in the evenings though, because it's always full of people ><

There's nothing wrong about being geeky. Yeah power to the nerds.
Anyway most of Jay's fans are asians, Asians with crazy parents who kill you if you don't pass, so that probably explains why most of this thread consists of school-related talk.
pwahaha. I speak faster than I think sometimes, does that make sense? So I end up falling all over my own words and I don't make sense.
Anyways, how was everyone's winter breaks? Mine wasn't very productive, I ended up going out everyday and not getting many "academic" things done. Which sucks because I was really behind once we got back to school haha.

i go to berk too...i guess there's stuff to do, but i think berkeley's kinda clique-y...i definitely think my friends in LA are having a better time than me and my friends up here.

Do you enjoy Berkeley as a whole though? I mean do you ever regret going there?
I dislike cliques. That's so weird though because I wouldn't have expected Berkeley to be cliquey because everyone there seems to be pretty smart and mature and past the "clique" stage. I know this is a bit stereotypical, but is it really liberal and are there a lot of druggies on campus? Or does it depend on your major? I'm majoring in engineering, which freaks me out because I know that department has a lot of sabatoge right?
I'm really hoping to stay in Southern Cali so I really want to attend UCLA, however, I don't know if I'll get in. However, I'm hoping the new holistic process will help out. *crosses fingers*, but this year there was a record number of applicants which means decisions won't come out till April 1st.
So far I've gotten into my safety school, Irvine, but the other UC schools don't come out till March. :(
Anyway, I don't know how I got regents canidacy at Berkeley, my stats aren't even that impressive. Maybe they felt bad for me, or maybe they really liked my Leehom essay. hahahaha.

Psh, I feel left out. I live waaaay up North in Cali, nothing exciting every happens, and I rarely get to go to anywhere cool. I don't think anyone lives near me anyway. XP That's what I get living in a quiet town.

Lucky Singerchick! Regents candidate :O
I'm just a normal dumbdumb. Might be all that methane gas hanging around Davis though. Not getting enough oxygen to my brain!!! :dead:
All my friends are having more fun down in socal too. Except most of the friends they have made that I've met so far are not such great people in my eyes, so I don't really have any desire to go down there.
I don't regret going to Davis, but at the same time I wish Davis as a town was as interesting as Berkeley with the variety of performances that a student can go to like at Zellerbach Hall (sp?) and at other areas in town, whereas Davis has...cows :/
the trouble with living in small towns is that you have to find or make stuff that's exciting to do, which is where student organizations come in handy I guess.

Irvine is a very very boring place to live in. Welcome to a city that closes shop at 10 pm/11 pm, not a college town at all. However, it is a relaxing place to come home to from stressful school. Having a car would help you get around to other places that are more fun. If you choose to go to UCI, be forewarned...
(I used to live there but go to school in new york)

Yeah, I agree iceblade, although I don't live in Irvine :P
I think I've virtually given up on the idea of trying to get to like Davis, because the small town type of atmosphere is starting to get on my nerves. People run on their own schedules, things close WAY too early for a student whose classes are all over the place. It's very frustrating, for someone who is used to convenience and efficiency.

living in davis isnt that bad.. but its true shops do close early.. theres not much of a nightlife.. only concerts you'll get will be offered on campus... thats why people usually end up joining groups and organizations because it takes up time blah blah blah.. from what ive noticed.. the common hang out activity to do in davis.. is to crowd around the tv and watch the television.. besides that... life in davis WITHOUT a car is horrendous. consider picking up a hobby!

there's definitely lots to do in berkeley; sometimes i think there's like tooo much.
there's definitely some protests, but they're pretty small in scale and i think berkeley really isn't that liberal as it's put out to be. i'm not the only one that feels this way, a lot of ppl fell the same. about druggies, there's someone on my floor that is high a lot, but i can't really tell (only once did i smell pot), but other than that, i haven't realy seen people doing it. i mean a lot of ppl smoke cigarettes or something that looks like cigarettes. and there are homeless ppl but the ones i've seen on campus are pretty harmless. one even wished my friend good luck on my midterms.

At my interview the professor of Molecular Biology told me that it all depends what a student is looking for. Some students may like Berkeley and it's semester system with it's 'big town' atmosphere better than say UCLA.
He suggested that I attend Berkeley's OHP thing the day before Cal-day and maybe living in the dorms and meeting alumni and such will give me a better idea if it really suits me.
By the way, I think his first name was Matt? Matthew? Or something.. Anyone have him as a professor?

my god when was the last time I was in this USA forum?
singerchick, congrats on your acceptances! did you read my long boring PM at HomSweetHome regarding UCI and CHP?
hmm sometimes I wonder if I would have been happier at Davis instead. I remember being VERY indecisive about Irvine and Davis last year.

ah.. sorry for answering so late singerchick!! shows you how much free time we get^^ haha. are you looking into mcb (molecular and cell bio)? dont commit to a bio major yet!! i regret mcb. i wish i'd chosen microbial bio. its too easy to be mcb and you dont realize the other bio choices. plus in the college of natural resources you get a b.s. instead of a freakin b.a. *bitter*
social life? sure there's cliques. i think its like this at every big university tho, esp the UCs. it's easy to get lost, so you get used to a certain group. socal vs. norcal.... i mean, socal environment is def more chill... but go to cal and you're completely surrounded by college students, so its chill in its own way. i mean... i cant compare the UCs.. but i had a grad student say its a huge diff btweent SDSU and cal, that ppl here are socially awkward. but thats sdsu, not ucsd or anything.. and i heard most the students at other UCs arent so chill anyway.. its the city itself that you'd be comparing for the whole "chill" factor. amongst the schools i wouldnt say there's no difference.
also.. social group wise, its very ethnicity oriented.. oh, wait there's an article:
http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F50A15FF3C540C748CDDA80894DF4044 82
(jon hu the interviewee went to my hs btw..)
i wouldnt say its better at other UCs. most of my friends from back home are at ucsd and they have the same complaints. it really depends on your own personality i think and what you make of whats given to you. you can party as much as you like and find lotsa friends, or hide up in a hole and study and play on your comp.
the whole liberal thing.. its like it said in that article i posted. not so much anymore. now its mostly studious asians. more of my friends at ucsd smoke pot than the ones here. i did see some naked protesters b4, and ppl do streak in the library during finals, but its defintely not up to the reputation it gained from the 60s.
oh.. and engineering? dont worry, its not engineering that has sabotaging, its mcb. engineers are pretty good abt sharing hw and helping ea other (from what i've seen anyway). mcb is where the crazy competitive premed ppl are (i.e. knocking over ppl's crystalizations in lab so they get bad results) engineering is actually a really good choice. tons of job ops for cal angineering grads.
you wrote abt lee hom for your essay? haha, thats awesome.
anyways... super long post.. but i hope i didnt forget anything. but yah! come here! i think i made the right choice coming here (tho if you got into places like stanford go there!! total blasphemy.. im gonna get shot here)

Ah, it's cool that there are a lot of UC students here. I actually go to a California community college right not, but just finished applying to transfer. So far I've gotten into UCSD, but I'm still waiting on UCLA and Berkeley. I've lived in Southern California all my life though so I'm hoping I also get into Columbia so I can go back east.

My dad went there and I lived there almost 7 years, New York is an awesome place. Good luck!
FAJITAThanks for your reply! It was really informative. Yeah I wrote my longest essay about Leehom, about how I snuck into his music video shoot in LA despite being underage and how I got a picture with him and hence therefore the fact that I am not inhibited by rules makes me stand out and allows me to reap awards. Something along those lines.
I just got my admissions decisions from CAL and LA and I'm soooo ecstatic, I got in!! :)
Congratulations! It is our great pleasure to offer you admission to UCLA for the Fall Quarter 2007.
Welcome to the College of Engineering as a freshman for Fall 2007. Congratulations! You have been awarded the UC Berkeley Regents' and Chancellor's Scholarship. Details are being sent via email and the U.S. mail.
I was freaking out. Wow. Talk about heart attack. Now it's time to visit the schools!

Congrats on Cal and UCLA! Did you apply as a freshman? I think my friend told me she finds out today. Transfers don't find out until April 30th. The wait is killing me. I think I'll die happy if I got into any of the three I'm still waiting for.

thanks! Yeah I applied as a freshmen and the wait was killing my because last year I remember them coming out earlier. Anyway, they just came out like 15 minutes ago.
Good luck with your tranfers! COLUMBIA i s awesome, I remember going there for Chinese school when I used to live in NYC and it's a beautiful place. I didn't apply there though because my parents wanted me to stay in state. I have yet to visit LA and CAL. :)

You'll love both of them! They're both totally different though. Campus wise I fell in love with LA, especially north side of campus. Berkeley was cool too, but it's definitely a lot older. I think the attraction is mostly the city and being in the bay area. I absolutely love LA's campus though haha.
Ya, my cousin went to Columbia so I visited her a couple of times. I really hope I get in, but I'll need a huge scholarship to afford it anyways.

OMG! I got into Cal! I didn't even know that decisions were out today because I remember hearing that they come out on the 30th. I'm so excited! I actually never really entertained the thought that I would be accepted.
I had my heart set on Davis already, and now I'm feeling a little indecisive. I don't know if Berkeley will be too competitve for me. It would be high school all over again, but worse. but OMG!!
singerchick: congrats on your acceptances! and you got the regents scholarship! *very impressed*
lazyazn5318: don't worry, i'm sure you'll get in!
fajitapita: wow, thanks for that huge detailed post!

congrats! I wish you the best of luck!
I've officially decided to go to LA, but it was hard turning down Berkeley because this Regents Alumni girl called me and was like, "are you excited about Berkeley, if you have any questions...." and I was like "Sorry, I'm going to UCLA." Then it was like this awkward silence. -_-
BUT UCLA HAS BOMBDIGGITY FOOD, so I'm satisfied. XD.

Actually, I was totally rejected, but for various reasons, I decided before decisions came out that I would stay at Illinois regardless of whether I got in or not! So it's still all good.
