View Full Version : Taiwanese rap
What's the deal with Taiwanese mainstream rap??
To my knowledge, there are two "real" rappers.
Machi and MC Hot Dog.
Everyone else just raps and sings.
And honestly MC Hot Dog can kick Machi's group to ashes.
And I found a bunch of underground Taiwanese rappers.
The question is :: How's ROC rap doing?
I don't live there, and I don't know what's happening.
I know for sure the fan base is very small so it'll be hard to switch to rap like America did.
Basketball should be good influence since it's popular in Taiwan.
Except for the two that I named, are there other Taiwanese rappers??
I know there's Chou Pi Jiang in Singapore, but I can't get any of their songs..

please...dont reply with stuff like "jay is a rapper! he is the best!" no one is doubting his musical skillz...but that wasnt the question.
yeah..there are few true hip-hop/rap groups or MCs in taiwan, mc hotdog(i think he is still serving his military duties), machi, some other dude, and there is suppose to be a new comer, witness(he is from houston, tx, usa) later this year...
yes, the hip hop scene is blowing up in taiwan but its also blowing up in the U.S., and the ppl in taiwan are just trendy and worshipping the western culture. i have been to many stores in taipei where they specialized in hip hop clothing and the whole nine yard..pretty cool sometimes, but its pretty play out.
as for hip hop chinese albums, check out this girl duo, called t-rush...not too bad...but they cant really sing.
whatever is trendy in japan or u.s., taiwan will follow.... dont worry...history never changes...

Actually, I'm very interested in this as well. I'm interested in hearing the China (Mainland) versions of rap. It's hard to download Mainland Chinese music because...we'll... people just don't know about them and don't trade them (-_-). But I would love to get my hands on some Mainland Chinese music and hear what the youth have to say about their society and their country.

i think it's getting too much. when machi came out with their album i kinda liked it, although i'm not really into rap, but now it seems that there's almost nothing but rap. it's the same thing in the us. it gets annoying after a while when all you hear is rap.

heyz.... haha.. rap.. my kinda thing...
well i agree w Gatz... machi suxx man... ok.. u guys asked abt china, sg, taiwan rappers... here r some...
taiwan:
- dog G
(ok.. prob is i can't type chinese here so i hv to use his 'eng' name.. but he's e pioneer n still e most respected o e rap scene in tw. w a group called EAC but his albums aren't avail in sg coz o excessive vulgarities. but u can check it up on boxup. add as follows
http://www.boxup.com/big5/music/singeralbum/1/singeralbum621_1.htm
- new grp: iron bamboo
(well they r not too bad but i can't stand their attitude.. they seem to think they r e best w they r not... oh well... )
hongkong:
- LMF
(disbanded due to some internal probs but their stuffz good. )
- Chou Pi Jiang aka CPJ
(u can buy their cds @ cd shops... but i think onli hmv still has stock. or else u can try behaviour store @ far east plaza #04-48)
- nong fu aka FAMA
(a little new but good nevertheless. album can be bought @ behaviour store as well)
- lam kee
(i can't remember which record company they belong to.. but i still can't seem to find their EP around sg... so i can't tell u where to find them. sorry abt that but they are great... just tt i dunno what is goin to happen now that one of their MCs have left the group)
- china..
well.. i m not too sure about china coz they are just starting out. they are currently more like searching for an identity in their 'underground' music scene and the mainstream stuff basically is quite crappy... mostly...
as fer some pp that u guys mentioned...
witness is from hongkong.. as in he is born in hk but went to US...
Elfira, u heard the wrong stuff.. really.. coz A LOT of alleged rappers really cannot rap. i suggest you check out those i mentioned above coz i dun just base them on my pref but on their respectability in the scene as well.
gatz... erm... well... if u wanna talk about rappers as in only rapping.. well... MC hotdog's songs.. he does sing a little also.. but check out dog g... he maybr ur cup of tea.
god... longgg message.. phewww... :bleh:

Actually i don't like to listen to rap but i'm come across of this rapper which make me 'gua mu xiang kan' ...he is called shawn song yue ting who is nominated for 15th taiwan golden melody award best newcomer and best lyricst. He is indeed a true talent but unforuntely he passed away last year due to cancer. He is only 23. David tao had wanted to sign him but he can't fulfill his dreams because his illness had gone to the last stage. He also got rap in tension 'i'll be with you'
I nearly cried after reading and listening his lyrics of 'life's a struggle' which contain 1300 words which reflect his life..it is full of sorrow and pain. the song you listening is just a demo and he using one take to finish rapping 1300 words without stopping, without NG. His mother find this demo after he passed away and this song is written in 1996.
'life's a struggle' can be listened on this website..a website to memory him

his full album can be listen online in boxup.

The content of the songs reflect his whole life, izzit true?
I mean, he really being to jail, and found the photo of his aunt....????
He have cancer izzit because he smoke? What a pity. But I guess I would pick up smoking too if I have a family like that!
He does lead a miserable life. But maybe he'lll have a better one after he goes to heaven!
What a waste of a talent, I personally thinks that he rap very well, not like Jacky wu, dunno how to rap but still want to act.
