How many people here speak....
Just 1 language?
Know 2 languages?
Know 3 languages or more?
...Or want to learn another language?
I speak English, Chinese, and Spanish :shy:
I have been studying Mandarin Chinese, but I would also like to learn Cantonese when I get into college...
What about all of you?
Do we have any cunning linguists in our presence?
I have been studying Mandarin for 3 years, and I would like to learn Cantonese at some point when I get into college...
What about all of you?
Are there any cunning linguists in our presence?:brows:

edit by vunsin 06/21/2006: I added another option (Three or more!) because many people seem to speak more than 3 languages, myself included.

Hmm, I don't know which choice I should vote in the poll. I basicly know 4 languages.
English, Cantonese, Malay.. and Japanese (attending classes)
English and Cantonese was since young, wherelese for Malay, it's compulsary since I'm in Malaysia, studying in a Malay school.
For Japanese, I've been attending Japanese language classes for more than a year, so that sort of count one of the language I speak right?

11-24-2005, 07:24 AM
I can speak three languages ; english, cantonese and mandarin. But my cantonese isnt THAT good.
I can speak a few lines in many different other languages ; korean. japanese. french. German. many others. I got to learn these languages when I went overseas on holiday and from international online chats. It's kinda fun.
I use to know how to read and write "I love you" in like... 20 languages. But I forgot all of them now. )x

It depends on what you mean by 'know'.
I speak English and Mandarin. I've taken spanish for two years, and was pretty darn good at it. I've got 2 years of Latin, and I've also got four years of Japanese in me. But the last three languages I don't know fluently (well, my Japanese isn't all that bad, so I guess you could say I kind of know that). I wouldn't really say I 'know' Spanish or Latin if I only know such a limited bit, so I don't think things that you hardly know count as actually knowing it. I mean, if that were the case then that means I'd know Taiwanese, Cantonese and Korean too, even though it's only bits and pieces, so I really don't think that languages that you only know some phrases in actually count.
I'd like to further my education in Japanese (3 years high school level + 1 year of 2nd year college level Jap), and I'd like to learn Taiwanese (because I'm Taiwanese), Korean (because it's an interesting language), and Cantonese (because my bf is Canto).

i can speak english very well. in our country we have 10 subjects in school. during my time there was only one subject in our language then now two were added. they say that the philippines is the third biggest english speaking country in after the united states and britain. of course i can also speak tagalog and i have been learning mandarin. i read chinese better rather than speak it. i am so scared that my grammar would be wrong. and there are so many words in chinese that sound the same so it takes time for me to understand what the other person is saying. but reading is much easier.

I speak Cantonese, English, and Malay quite fluently. I also know a bit of Mandarin, even lesser of Hakka and Hokkien.
I want to learn Mandarin! :secret: Just listen to Jay's singing and quarentee you will learn a few words, then add on and add on.... that's how I learn to understand when people speaks Mandarin. Sometimes when people speak to me in that language I couldn't answer, because my pronounciation isn't so good (improving) so they think I don't know, and then talk secrets in Mandarin in front of me. But then I actually understands what they are saying... :brows:

I chose: I can speak three
These languages are: English, Chinese, Cantonese(dialect).
They are the languages I'm able to converse with freely.
Other languages like Japanese(I can speak a little and I can mostly understand it), Korean(Can't speak but understand a little), and just a bit of Italian(bits and pieces).
If I could, I really want to learn how to converse freely in Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and the language of Egypt. I love these 5 languages somehow.

I put three. I'm not fluent in Mandarin yet, but I can have a conversation, depending on the subject. I can generally understand a love song, which can come in handy every now and then.
The other two languages are English (of course) and Spanish. I can more or less understand Portuguese and Italian, though, but I can't really speak either of them. They're just similar enough to Spanish that I can have a conversation with me speaking Spanish on one side and the other person speaking either Portuguese or Italian and we get the meaning across.

I know English and Hmong. I'm learning Japanese in school. Then I want to learn Latin and Chinese later on too. Lately though, I've been really interested in a lot of languages. I think I might even want to learn French, German, Spanish, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese too. I'm even a little bit interested in learning the middle-eastern languages.
