Hey guys...I read that at the recent hong kong awards (held by the commercial radio 903) where Jay won two awards...he was walking around during the post-awards dinner cuz he forgot his back medication and couldn't sit for a long time. How long has he had this problem?....how can he do all the sling stuff he does in his mvs?

mm yal had no idea?

jay has a heriditary back problem that he got from his dad... he has to take medicine.. and there is no cure. when he sits for long periods of time his back starts to ache.

and um, ksjay, what do u mean by "sling stuff" lol sorry if i sound lame. do you mean all his martial arts stuff?

his back is alright if he takes medicine.. and the martial arts is really flash arm movements. ^^;

when i first heard from my mom that jay had a "disease with no cure" i got scared! i thought he had cancer or something geez.. ^^;;

oh wow...serious? he can't get surgery or something?

oh by sling stuff...I mean like his flying around in his mvs and concerts stuff like that...where he is hooked up to a sling...wouldn't it aggravate the problem?

oh wow...serious? he can't get surgery or something?

hmmm... hes only on slings 4 a short time so i dun think it will hav much affect... i fink if he is given more time 2 relax he wold b in beta shape... i doubt his evrday life wold b as rigorous as sum of his mvs are. i dunno if his condition affects his lifestyle much bcoz he seems like such an active person, always playin bball n stuff... but wen it flares up, it seems very very painful :(

actually it shouldn't be so bad when your on wire.

if any of you guys have been rock climbing..etc. the harness that you wear.. it's like a belt around your waist and then two straps where you put your legs through. and so that should give him enough support that it doesn't hurt him that much.. especially if he takes medication.

It's a genetic problem which his uncle oso had it n he himself only realized it these few yrs. he oso got interviewed by a arts programme and he talked bout his music, n talked bout his spinal problem, he oso v afraid bout his problem coz in the end stage of this problem, the whole body wont be able to move, which is almost like paralysis. There's no cure for it except to treat it with anti-inflammatory drugs n anti-pain drugs.....sad to happen on such a talented musician....

Bunny
01-10-2003, 12:26 AM
So, when he's like 80, he won't be able to move at all??
That must be so scary, knowing that!!!

isn't that the military obligation??
poor jay... but good i don't really wanna not having jay around for i dunno two years maybe [the military training]

Isn't Jay an only child? Cuz here in the US I heard that if you're the only male child of the family, you can't get drafted or anything, so there's no reason for military training. (correct me if I'm wrong)
I would think they have that rule everywhere.

min
01-10-2003, 10:52 AM
i'm not sure actually if there's any specific rule on an only child!
all i heard is the millitary training is an obligation for every boy in the taiwan family [same in korea too i think] well except with special exception like jay's back problem

~sugarcookie~

this is so horrible! I don't want him to be paralysed!

i think it's quite sad to hear bout his spinal problem which has caused him so much pain.

but what i think is even worth commending is his undying passion for music and his efforts to produce great songs for us in each album!

it makes me wanna support him forever!!

is it true? his illness at the last stage, his whole body will not be able to move? last stage meaning wat har?

i hope that he will get well as soon as possible
why such a good person will get tis kind of problem
is no fair...!!! :(

Jo
01-17-2003, 06:59 AM
actually

in Taiwan you're not drafted

its just an established law and system that you have to be in military training for at least 2 years once you've hit 21

and they'll continue looking for you until you're 26...which means that even if you come to the US...if you go back before you're 26...you will still be forced to train in the military

but if you are overweight, have a high degree in near or far sightness, extremely underweight, unusually short or have any kind of problem that can be proven...you don't have to go into training...unless the condition you suffer is recovered before you hit 26...then too bad for you

i wanted to cry the first time i heard of jays problem. :(

i had only read the intro to the article about a spinal thing.

i fraeked out i was so scared of us loosing jay! but then read the whole thing. it must be soo hard for him.

i guess as long as he takes his meds hes ok, but it still sounds bad.

I feel so sad after reading this because I am worried about Jay every time he does certain "stunts" or whatever martial arts movements in his performances or music videos....won't the strenuous activities aggravate his situation? I personally don't like medication in that all the chemicals are bad for the body... I know Jay has no choice but Ihope that the medications' side effects will not do too much damage to his body....
I am so worried about Jay :( I hope he stays to more non strenuous activities in his mv and concerts....

its really rare to have such a talented artist in Taiwan.. and to be popular all over asia... and wuts worse is he's got to deal with this disease he's born with.. some ppl say he's looks all cocky and stuff like dat but he's actually more inspiring..continues to do what he loves most.. which is writing music

estherz
04-08-2003, 03:05 PM
it really can't be cured? i thought he'll just have to go thru a few series of operation and he'll recover.. :o
oh my..he better dont aggravate it too much..hope he takes care.. :(
will someone just find a cure for him...!!! i'll poor jay..haai
why does it always end up this way. the best just always have all the worst problems!!

Then he would be rejuvenated to create more special music which is different fro others so as to inspire us always.

yeap i heard about his spinal problem...it is something about arthritis of the back bone or something...(i can't really remember the actual name of the diease) and there is no cure for it...and i read somewhere that those who has this type of spinal problem has a shorter life span. i was sooooo shocked when i read it....i really hope it does not happen to him.

Reporter: Heard that you have a spinal condition.Your fans very concerned about your health?
Jay: Thanks for everybody's concern. The conditionis actually sometimes good sometimes bad. Sometimes I don't evenhave to take my
medicine and I can play basketball. My singing won't be affected, only my on stage performance (i suppose he means dancing) will be affected. This is why I try not to be too active.

got this from an interview..it seems tt he can only control it by medicines there hasn't been any cure yet.there was this artist who had the same problem as jay n during his concert, he was in so much pain tt he had 2 sit in a wheelchair 2 perform....
sigh..i hope jay will take care of himself more.... :realsad:

I am thinking no one is perfect in the world..
That's very true..you see Jay..he is talented and can sing and rap so well..but..he got the serious spinal prob!

Those other singers likes Edison Chen, Shawn Yue are good looking but couldn't sing well..

Pity Jay...that his spinal prob is bugging him all the time..

i worry for his back problems too. i am starting my studies in health and i plan to be a doctor. i hope i can find a cure for his back problems. well , to any one else who knhows any one with this similar problem when the pain occurs the person should avoid exposure to cold, wiind, and wetness. rest from work and apply heat of some form to the area(hot water bag, or electric pad) 20-30 mins. at a time, two or three times a day.(<- this relief some pain.) Massaging also helps. This is not a cure only a treatment.

omg i never heard about this before...i feel so sorry fer him! but now i know that jay isnt perfect which is good because being to perfect is bad. He doesn't act like he has any problems and has no ego just because he has a spinal problem. he doesn't talk about it too much probly because he doesnt want people to pity him and just to like him the way he is and not buy records because of the problem. dont worry jay! ill take care of u if u need me! =P

I don't really know that jay has spinal problem until I reas the post. From the messages that i read said that the spinal problem is descending by inheritance.

I don't know whether any ppl out there know this things or not?

" I read an article b4, mentioned that sitting in fornt of the piano too long
will cause spinal problem".

Peoples that sitting in front of the piano too long must choose a proper Piano Chair.

yeah, i've heard of his back problem. poor thing. he has to deal with it, and cope with his busy schedule and all.

yup, i've tried rock-climbing, and i feel that it's squeezing out all my fats. LOL, but that's not the point. ;) since there isn't much he can do to help with the problem, let's just hope he takes care of himself.

Jay should remember to take medication always so that his back wouldn't hurt so much!! Sometimes he forget coz he's so busy...

at least he can still play his favourite sport! basketball!! hee
i think going for army would have been better and easier for him than to have this back problem...

this gives me another reason to adore him more and more.. i mean, even with his back problems, he can still perform so well in concerts, go on with his work/stress, travel all over the world and live life to the fullest..
Jay Chou truly is Incomparable, talented and he deifinitely stands out from all the other singers!

oh wow...serious? he can't get surgery or something?
oh by sling stuff...I mean like his flying around in his mvs and concerts stuff like that...where he is hooked up to a sling...wouldn't it aggravate the problem?
I read about that problem. Surgery will not help. It does not kill you too. But it hurts. So far, no one has die of the disease yet. No matter what it is, its not normal and its only necessary for Jay to take care of his health.

I know about Jay's back problem yesterday when I read his biography on the net. I was concern, so I asked my Mr who is a specialist doctor (but he does not specilise in spine). When I told him, he said 'wow, the guy is stuffed.' [his means that Jay'll have a hard life].

I asked him what does he mean... and this is my understanding of our conversation... basically its a progressive disease. Later down the track, Jau's spine will be 'fixed in one position'. His spine will slowly fuse together. So the best is probably to have the spine straight. So, he needs to takes care that he does not bend when he sleeps, because if he does, when he stands up, he will be in the same bended position, which means he'll look to the ground. So he needs to sleep straight. Whatever position he spends most time in, will become his fixed position. He can move his limbs, just not his back.

That is why in an earlier post, it was mentioned that Jay has to walk around instead of sitting down. Because I think if he is in a sitting position for too long, his back will get used to the bent position. And from the post, it seems like its a painful disease too...

gee, I feel so sorry for Jay. He's so brave. He is the best role model. I guess that is why he runs around all the time, because unlike other people, his time is running out fast.

We should pray for a cure. I wonder who is doing research into this, may be we should start a donation to put more money towards that side of the research. Esp as Jay's Fans, we should organise that. Jay, your loyal fans will do whatever we can to help you. We love you very much.

Jay has ankylosing spondylitis. This is an inflammatory disease that affects the lower spine, and sometimes other joints and body organs. Main symptoms of this disease are pain and inflammation (flare-ups), which involve mostly the lower spine, but can also involve the hips, shoulders, chest, heel, eyes, kidneys, heart, and lungs. The disease is passed genetically, and there is no current cure--only treatments. Treatment is through medication including anti-inflammatory agents, and biologic agents (tumour necrosis factor). New treatments with some of the biologic drugs is promising in halting progression of the disease in some patients.

In lay terms, Jay's back pain could become crippling. He needs to take medication to control it, and watch how long he sits or stays in one position. He also needs to avoid stress/injury to his spine.

I have a minor (Grade 1) spondylitis in my spine, and sometimes have experienced pain so severe I was unable to move more than maybe an inch or two in an hour. There is no way to describe the severity of the pain, unless you have experienced it. Jay's condition is much more severe, and likely to worsen in time.

I will absolutely pray for him to not have to suffer this type of pain. I think Jay keeps a lot of pain inside himself. He may need to make changes in his professional life in order for him to control his condition. All of us--his fans--need to understand and support him fully. He has given us so much beauty with his music.

shadowcats2, thanks for the post and explanation. I too is worried about Jay and at the same time admire him for doing what he does. Though sometimes I feel angry that he's not taking better care of himself... I guess that means sacrificing his love for music, which he doesn't want to...

I think if we can get enough commited people together, we may be able to do something great for Jay and other sufferers of the same diesease.

I'm surprised Jay's spinal problem doesn't affect his dancing. I think he's a great mover!

No, there's no cure for it, or at least not yet. He has to take medication for it, though, and I've read recently that the tricks on the harness for "True Legend" caused pain for him, so that must be a big problem considering the action movies he's been in. I also remember seeing a video on YouTube where he was doing a handstand in one of his "World Tour" concerts between performing "Shuang Jie Gun" and "Huo Yuan Jia," I think, and he suddenly stopped halfway into it and the way he was walking afterwards seemed to indicate that he was in a bit of pain.

aww. poor jay. he has to endure the pain just for his fans!? =( i hope it wouldn't be too hard for him to act in "true legend".

I read some things on the Internet saying that Jay's condition can be very dibilitating in some cases. Does anyone know how badly he suffers from it? I would be totally gutted if he ever jacked in his singing career because of his back problems (though of course his health and happiness is far more important), although he did a bit of breakdancing on his 2007 World Tours DVD with (I think) Yuhao from Nan Quan Mama. I was amazed that he was even able to dance like that, so obviously his back doesn't always affect him badly! I can totally empathise with Jay (he is a real inspiration to me) as I have this back condition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoliosis myself and was in terrible pain when it was first detected by my doctor, but it doesn't bother me at all now.
