I say you run away from F4 as fast as possible.. After you get into Jay I don't see how you can like their music. I like them from Meteor Garden but completely refuse to listen to their music.. lol ;D
Here are some good Chinese artists, we have a lot of their songs here in the forums.
- JJ Lin (R&B)
- Anson Hu (R&B)
- S.H.E. (Pop)
- Sun Yanzi (Ballad/Soul?)
- Elva Hsiao (Hip Hop)

I might sound corny, but I think A-Mei, Z Chen, Harlem Yu, and William So are good too.
But the best ones had been mentioned by Cici.

Well it depends on what kinda music you like...are you only into R&B and hip hop like Jay? or do you have a diverse taste and can enjoy anything?
My personal favs are (some already mentioned):
Faye Wong (she's been around for a long time and has tons of good songs)
S.H.E
Elva Siu
Lin Jun Jie (JJ Lin)
Coco Lee
A-Mei Cheung
Jolin Tsai (I know she asked for GOOD artists, but some of her songs are undeniably good, the ones written by Jay)

He was recommended to me, but if you like slow ballads, Chris Yu is really good. His voice is really nice and the melodies very soothing.

Hey thanks yall, can't wait to try out these artists~ And yeah, I am aware that F4 can't sing a chord to save their lives, but they were cute in MG! =)
hehe, sorry i can't really recommend anything new but i just wanted to say to Seltsi that i love Simple Plan, and addicted is my fave song from them :)
also second michelle branch - she rocks!
yanzi is good, i like her voice although i don't like her songs as much

Think it definitely have to be either YanZi and Sammi. Both are really great singers and have their own brand of music and of coz, think anyone new to chinese and canto music will be impressed by Sammi's brand of Cantopop. haha.
Just think that Sammi and YanZi have been great shining lights of the asian industry. And of course Sammi is a pretty fancinating actress as well. Always nice to watch her shows.

how bout the older artists, those that have style and class and old school talents. examples include the 4 heavenly kings - in order of personal preference - jacky cheung, leon lai, andy lau, and aaron kwok. a-mei has real talent too, try listening to some of her older stuff especially the sister's and her 1998 concert prelude albums.

F4's singing is not bad! Vanness' singing is awesome... a little boring but it's still good.
I also recommend Jimmy Lin, Richie Ren, Joey Yung, and Nicholas Tse. That's all I can think of right now.

Recommendations as stated below:
Taiwan: As usual, besides Jay, i'll strongly recommend F.I.R! their music are really great and they just release their second album but still maintaining their standard eversince their release of the first album. Angela Chang, Vivian Hsu(just release her new album), S.H.E
Singapore: Sun Yan Zi (someone you must know!), Tanya, JJ Lin Jun Jie (he just release his new album too)
Hongkong: not much into hongkong but TWINS is good.

Hongkong: not much into hongkong but TWINS is good.
i respect your opinion but out of all these "known" hk singers Twins is on the bottom of my list; i'd recommend everyone else first.
from HK i'd say
1) Janice, Charles, and Justin... none of them have real albums out yet (Janice's first is all covers of old Leon Lai songs so...), but their vocals are leagues above any of the other "new generation" singers... watch out for them
2) Seasons Lee, Edison Chen, Sonsetfree, Nothing None, MC Yan, Yellow Peril, Sang Fan are some good recommendations for the less-poppy or non-pop genres. If you're into heavy stuff then be sure to check out Hardpack and King Ly Chee too. Edison himself is not good in my opinion, but his cd's are very fresh because of the people who are behind him supporting him and helping him
3) If you like ballads then go for old Jacky Cheung songs... not many ballads from HK now days that are truly outstanding.

if you like rock- denise ho(although she does do a bit of pop and dance but her rock songs are good)
if you like slow songs- joey yung(She is good)
if you like dance songs-yumiko cheng(Her songs are fantastic)
if you like slow soothing music-david tao
my personal favouites are andy hui, candy lo, jay chou(Obviously) and denise ho.
is that ok?

everybody has said what i wanted to say ): like yanzi, jj, david tao and leehom. anyway, would like to add some of the older singers. i think a mei's old songs are really good, although her newer ones arent as impressive. give amei a try, i think you will be pleasantly surprised.. she sings real good! and also jacky cheung. all his songs are quite nice and his voice is very soothing. other than these, na ying, faye wong and sammi cheng are good choices too. how abt anita mui? although she has already passed away, im sure her good music remains.. just stay away frm boybands. well nt being mean, but most of them cant sing to save their lives. except mayday and shin. yeahhh (:

yap i agree with smarks! a mei zhang hui mei is considered asia's tian1 hou4 (queen of pop or sthg like that), but i think now, her voice n songs were not as good as they used to be. her older songs written by zhang1 yu3 sheng1 were great.
i think if u dun mind cantonese n u like rock, u shld try beyond. they r also considered 1 of hong kong's greatest bands. it was very sad when 1 of their members passed away, but till now they r still loved by many people.
ya i think most people haf recommended many great singers. mando pop n cantopop r great! yay! =Þ haha..

wang lee hom / f.i.r. / michael wang guang liang / david tao / lin jun jie / jasmine [fish] leong / cindy wang.. then hong kong > leo ku kui kei / gigi leung wing kei / kelly chan wai lum / twins / alex fong lik sun / lmf .. hehe
princessKitty

leo ku kui kei / gigi leung wing kei / kelly chan wai lum / twins / alex fong lik sun
sorry, but i have something to say;
-leo koo is brilliant, he takes his career seriuosly.
-gigi leurng is an attention seeker(in the billboard 2002/2003 award show, she got her first award in seven years. do you know what she said? i am very happy becasue each year, i dress so nice, no-one gets to see but now i am up here, everyone can see how nice i look) :rasp: if she takes it seriuosly, she would say that, she would talk about music and not her clothes.
kelly chen has an ego(can't be bothered to talk about her, toomany bad things.)
twins are good
and alex is good, his latest album, never walk alone is good.
if you are just looking for singers, go ahead, but if you are looking for artist who are true and real, do not go with people who has bad personailty.

i agree with you about gigi leung.. i think she does try to act younger than her age.. but some of her old songs are okay.. and kelly chen.. lol i never knew.. hehe thanks for telling me.. some of her old songs are good too.. i dont know.. i guess i go for singers.. lol i dont really care about their personality.. just listen to their songs for entertainment purposes.. unless i really like them like jay ! =)
princessKitty
05-11-2005, 01:12 PM
well, you see, that is the typical thing about people that annoys me, they just listen to the songs, they don't look at their personality or background.
i have never heard a song from kelly chen that she herself has composed.
gigi has composed but her attention personality puts me off.
people should really look at those who sings the songs and not just listen.
imagine if you were to adopt a child, you would want to know what they are like. you wouldn't just take them in because they look cute or you feel sorry for them. so likewise, i always look at what the singer was like before i listen to their songs.
i listended to jay songs but i never knew what he was like, so i searched the web and obviuosly, i came to this and found out lots about him more. i bought his concert to see how he treated his fans. knowing the artist is as important as singing their singing ability.
kay_kay
05-11-2005, 01:15 PM
lol i see what you mean.. but the thing is i only look into singers' personalities when i like the majority of their songs.. if i dont like the majority.. i just listen without really caring.. lol
princessKitty
05-11-2005, 01:17 PM
oh ok then, then it's your choice isn't it?
no-one can stop you. what other singers do you listen to then?
kay_kay
05-11-2005, 01:21 PM
lol .. well right now.. i'm listening to jay , michael wang guang liang, f.i.r. , leo ku, wang lee hom and cindy wang, david tao and lin jun jie.. but i guess i listen to any song that sounds nice and has meaningful lyrics.. who do you listen to ?
princessKitty
05-11-2005, 01:28 PM
i listen to jay, obviously becasue his songs are meaningful, his lyrics are good, i really like oi por(grandma, track 4 of qi li xiang, my signature contains one sentence form that song) becasue 1 i can sing it and 2 i understand it.
i also listen to a lot of hong kong singers like denise ho, she takes her career seriuosly, candy lo, she needs to get noticed more for her music talent, ummm, david tao, talented, joey yung, lovely voice and great personality, wong ka kuerng, he composes his own music like jay and i think thats it. i have a lot of albums at home that i dont really listen to again but now and again, i do listen to them.
well, not as much as jay anyway.heehee

Besides Jay, I recommend David Tao and Wang Lee Hom whom are also very talented. I know david tao composed almost all his songs on his last album. And leehom composed/wrote/arranged/produced almost all his songs on his last album. But those two are actualyl two of my fav chinese artists.
Personality wise I've never met any of them, but they seem pretty nice. There is a DAvid TAo thread and a Leehom thread for you to find out more about them and also a leehom encounter thread.
Background wise. Well David tao graduated from UCLA and Leehom graduated from WIlliams and went to attend berkelee graduate school, anyway i don't know facts from the top of my head but their individual threads should have alot.
As for girls I enjoy Coco Lee, I love her strong voice, however my admiration for her has been slacking lately as I didn't really like her new album.
Amei is also good, i like her ballads along with ELva.
